Description

Helping families to find connections and towns with origins from the old German region of Mecklenburg of far northeastern Germany along the Baltic Sea Coast.

Mecklenburg was formed in 1348 and previously it was called Vandalia and Wendenland. Lutheranism was the religion by 1549. This area includes the old Duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Guestrow formed in 1621 and Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1701. By 1815 Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz became Grand Duchies. In 1819 and 1867 they were counted in a census which can be a very important resource for locating your families. In 1934 the 2 Grand Duchies united to become the State of Mecklenburg.

The State of Mecklenburg, after World War II in 1945, has also added the Prussian Province of West-Pomerania (Vorpommern), but was dissolved in 1952 into Districts. Finally after Germany's unification in 1990 it became the current new German State of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania or called Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in German. Note the old Mecklenburg was never a part of Prussia.

If you have family that is suspected as coming from old Mecklenburg, from census or other documents, please provide the sources you have. Also give as much info you have of your Mecklenburg ancestor, like aprox date of birth, death, marriage, children, census locations, ship names or dates, immigration, and town names. I have the Germans To America series and can find the ship and have listings for all towns and parishes of Mecklenburg.

I have learned many ways to find your town in Mecklenburg from finding my own Kruse family back in 1999 and enjoy helping others find their roots. Once the town is found, the actual parish church books dating back into the 1600's, and filmed by the Mormons, will give you the Pastor's entries that list births, baptisms, marriages, and deaths.

I do not write or read in German, however I can make some translations of the German writings in the 1800's and later. See the "Links" for maps and info.

Re: Krosswitz, Kroswitz, Gerber
Hello Mr. Kruse, Just wondering if you have had a chance to delve into this? I'm kind of at a loss where to go from here. Thanks - Marv
