Mec Vannin Press Information - 03-01-06
The Department of Health and Social Security in the Isle of Man has
recently sacked a long-standing and highly regarded worker in an apparent
"stitch-up" job.
There is an ongoing employment tribunal and so the specifics of the case will
not be commented upon but the minister for the department has
unwisely chosen to interfere and put political pressure in support of the
sacking.
The minister, Steve Rodan, has a history of such behaviour and was at the centre
of a scandal some years ago when, as Education Minister, he tried to have a
personal acquaintance appointed over the head of a better qualified internal
applicant for the post of Director of Education though it was publicly denied at
the time.
The employee's side of the public sector employment negotiating forum, the
Whitley Council, has made it clear that political interference in employment
disputes is inappropriate but Hazel Hannan MHK, one of the lesser political
members of the department, has launched what can only be described as an
incoherent attack upon the secretary of the Manx branch of TGWU,
claiming that the union should not get involved in such disputes!
The peculiar attack can be hear in audio form at:

Mec Vannin's policy supports robust employment legislation and Work
Permit laws to protect the population from exploitation and discrimination. That
policy clearly needs to be incorporated into the Island's Health department.
