Hi,
Thank you for the time you spent listening, and the compliments you paid, to us two candidates opposing Rep. Eshoo for Congress.
Your editorial endorsing her decries "an era of deep political cynicism" at the same time that it lauds Eshoo's "seniority and connections to address her district's needs". Doesn't it count as cynicism to game the seniority system to win pork at the expense of taxpayers in America's 434 other congressional districts? Or can the Times vouch that Eshoo will turn down any and all pork that our district doesn't deserve?
Eshoo's outspending her opponents 20-1 may indeed be evidence that she doesn't "take the voters for granted", but this judgment is belied by her never (to my knowledge) answering or even acknowledging any criticisms from her opponents. Indeed, her behavior has been consistent with the attitude that the voters' choice is between her and George Bush, or perhaps between her and having no representative at all. Not answering criticism is of course her right, just as not printing this letter is your right, but both involve taking something for granted.
The most impressive evidence of Eshoo's attitude has been her willingness to attend all the candidate forums, even when they haven't been covered by the press. If it's true (as she told me at the last forum) that she's never missed one in her career, then I commend her for it.
Oh, and my name is Holtz, not Holz. :-)
Thanks again,
Brian Holtz
