The oldest sentence in written Marathi is a rock inscription. The peculiar thing of this inscription is that it is not in Maharashtra, and even not in Marathi speaking area.
This inscription is carved on the rock near the left foot of Lord Bahubali on a hill at Shravanbelagola. This is the world’s largest monolithic statue. The inscription is read as “Shree Chaavundraaje Karviyale” and was carved in 981 C.E. This sentence is written in Kannada and Tamil languages also.
Shravanbelagola is situated in Hassan district of South Karnataka. This place is very far from the border of Maharashtra, and nearer to Tamil speaking area. Even then Chaavundraaj, the mighty General of Gang dynasty gave a prominent place to Marathi language. This suggests that he was a Marathi speaking person or at least bilingual (Marathi and Kannada) and a large number of Marathi speaking people were visiting Shravanbelagola, which was a Jain pilgrimage center from 2nd century B.C.E.
About the statue:
The statue is very magnificent, attractive and clean-cut. Every part of the statue is in accurate proportion.
The statue belongs to Lord Bahubali, a son of Rishabh and younger brother of Bharat. These persons are prehistoric and lots of references to them are found in many Jain and Hindu scriptures. According to them, Rishabh was the first forefather of all Kshatriyas (Warriors) Bharat was the first Chakravarti (mythical emperor) of India. Bahubali rebelled against Bharat, defeated him and then became a naked ascetic.
In recent decades, the statue has become world famous as many travelers from around the world are visiting this place and talking about it in print and electronic media. Every 12 year, there is a grand ceremony called Mahamastakabhishek, and millions of people come there to attend it.
History of Jainism in Maharashtra
Much has been written about history of Jainism in various regions like Tamil
Nadu, Karnataka, Bihar, Bengal, Rajsthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh etc. But
history of Jainism in Maharashtra is less discussed.
Rock inscriptions found in Maharashtra suggest that Jain monks were present in
Maharashtra before Common Era.
Interestingly, the oldest rock inscription in Maharashtra (2nd BCE) is an
inscription related to Jainism, and the oldest rock inscription in Marathi
language (10th CE) is also a Jain inscription.
In my article History of Jainism in Maharashtra, I have discussed various aspect
of this subject, which includes archeological evidences, literary references,
contribution of royal dynasties, Bhattarak tradition, people etc.

hi Mahavir, I have seen your email several times and believe that you have a good understanding and knowledge of Maratha History. I live in US and want to trace back some of the historical events happened couple of generation back. we are descendants of Bhonsle's Army which invaded East around 1740. By late 18th century, Bhonsle's army was defeating and never got the foothold as Maratha's altogether were defeated on the last battle of Panipat. Marathi peoples always failed to realize that all these expeditions took thousands of soldiers and their family to these remote areas. After defeat, they never made it back to their original homeland. That's why you will find traces of these peoples all along the routes where
these expeditions took place like Gujarat, MP, UP, Haryana, Bihar, Orissa, AP, Karnataka. After 100 of years they assimilated with the locals, adopted some of their culture. Due to their origination from farming, they had no difficulty in creating or adopting to new farmland and go back their main profession. Eventually, all of them become farmer in most of these places. But one can see a kind of segregation in these community from the local and maintained lot of their original culture. They also married only within their community wherever they settled.
Main idea behind my writing to you is that. All these incidents happened in past 250 years which not a very significant time period, just around 10 generations. Also, during these times, I guess that Maratha kings had some form of book keeping to keep a tab on all these movements. we are happen to one of the 96 Maratha clans so does many from UP or elsewhere. I found lot of proof which
points me to this direction. Do you have any idea whether Maratha kings have left any kind of documentation or old scriptures or something which can help me finding back my roots. I know that Pune, Nagpur happen to be cultural center of Maratha or Marathwada. I will really appreciate your help in finding me any such proof.
Thanks,
Mahato Basant Kumar

Yeh Mera India : you must see it
Every Indian should watch N Chandra's new film Yeh Mera India. It is mirror
image of our society.
Director N.Chandra says, "Y.M.I deals with issues like racial bias, communal
bias, immigrant bias that plague today's society and the outcome create
unnecessary unrest in peace and harmony of the nation. It is the story of one
day in the life of 12-13 people from different strata of Mumbai having different
goals, and wants. The U.S.P of the film is that before interval one will ask a
question with disappointment "Yeh Mera India?' and after the interval one will
say with a sigh of relief to find solutions and answers to long-range problems,
Yeh Mera India!"

There is a long-standing claim that Chhatrapati Shivaji, one of
India's greatest warriors, and his Bhosale family were descendants of
Sisodia Rajputs of Rajasthan. Contesting the claim, eminent Marathi
scholar Dr R.C. Dhere in his book Shikhar Shinganapurcha Shambhu
Mahadev says the founder of the Bhosale clan had links with the
Hoysala Yadavas of Karnataka.
The book focuses on the history of the Shiva temple at Shikhar
Shinganapur in Satara, one of the sacred spots for the Maratha
community. "Dr Dhere's book is the result of ten years of painstaking
research," says Aruna Dhere, eminent Marathi writer and the scholar's
daughter. "The origins of the Bhosales were discovered by accident."
Dhere's 101st book is bound to be controversial as it claims that a
certain Baliappa was the founder of the Bhosale family. He had
relations with the Hoysala Yadavas of Dwarsamudram (Halebid) in
Karnataka. "Following the demise of Satvahanas the polity is first
influenced by the Abhiras and then by the Yadava lineages which
finally resulted in a kingdom of Yadavas by the end of the 12th
century in the Deccan. This influence of the Yadava lineage
continues, as shown by Dr Dhere's work, up to the 17th century," says
Dr Ajay Dandekar, senior research fellow at the Social Science Centre
at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.
Dr R.C. Dhere in his book Shikhar Shinganapurcha Shambhu Mahadev says
the founder of the Bhosale clan had links with the Hoysala Yadavas of
Karnataka
The Yadavas ruled over the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, but when the
Dwarsamudram kingdom collapsed, most of the Yadava landlord families
sought refuge in the Vijayanagar kingdom. When the Vijayanagar
kingdom declined, a branch of the Yadavas moved north and secured a
foothold at Pande Pedgaon, Chambhargonde and Vaijapur in the
Marathwada region of Maharashtra.
In support of his claim that Baliappa was the founder, Dhere cites
evidence from Radha Madhav Vilas Champu by poet Jairam Pinde and
Sangeet Shah Makrand. Both mention the name of Balip (Baliappa), says
Dhere.
Historian Ninad Bedekar agrees that Pinde has mentioned the name
Baliappa. "But the same poet has mentioned that Shivaji's ancestors
were Ranas from Rajasthan. So how reliable is he?" Pinde was a
contemporary of Shivaji's father, Shahaji, and a member of his
entourage.
According to Dhere, it was L.G. Ghanekar in his 1933 book Prachin
Dravid who first claimed that the Bhosales did not have any links
with the Sisodia Rajputs. Not much importance was given to the claim
because Ghanekar was not a historian.
The claim that the Bhosales are a branch of the Sisodia Rajputs can
be found in the firmans of Ghorpades of Mudhol in Karnataka.
According to the Ghorpade family tree, the Bhosales and they are
descendants of a Sisodia warrior.
The late Marathi historian Narahar Kurundkar in his foreword to
Ranjit Desai's Shriman Yogi, one of the finest literary works on
Shivaji's life, says that Shahaji believed that he was a Rajput
because the Ghorpades considered themselves Sisodias. "Shahaji staked
a claim to the Ghorpade estates by claiming that Bhosales and
Ghorpades were brothers," says Kurundkar. But there is no evidence to
prove that the Bhosales had Rajput origins, he says.
"When Maloji (Shahaji's father) became a soldier, he used the title
Shrimant Maloji Raje. Shahaji later legalised the name by saying that
they were Rajput Kshatriyas," wrote Kurundkar in a 1966 foreword to
his book.
In 1916, Marathi historian V.K. Rajwade found a letter of Shahaji to
Muhammed Adil Shah of Bijapur saying he would not tolerate an insult
since he was a Rajput. Dhere argues that Shahaji's use of the word
Rajput in the letter merely meant a soldier by profession. "Shahaji
had written to complain about his cousin Trimbakji Bhosale," Dhere
explains. "He said that while he was a Rajput, his brother was an
akartuk, a person who has not achieved much in his life."
Dhere says the Sisodia Rajput myth was perpetuated because of
political compulsions. When Shivaji ascended the throne on June 6,
1674, there was a debate about whether he was a Kshatriya or not.
Gagabhatta, a Banaras Brahmin who was specially invited for the
coronation, said that Shivaji was a true-blooded Kshatriya and
conducted the coronation in the Rajasthani Rajput style. "Shivaji
used this Rajput angle only once at his coronation as he was more
concerned about achieving his goal of establishing a 'Swarajya',"
says Dhere.
The Bhosale family never mentioned their so-called Rajput origins. It
was only after the Mughals released Shahu, Shivaji's grandson, in
1707 that he started claiming that the Bhosales were Sisodia Rajputs.
Dhere says that those who believe in the Rajput link base their views
on Sabhasad Bakhar (1697), which Krishnaji Anant Sabhasad, a
councillor in Shivaji's court wrote 17 years after Shivaji's death.
In the Sabhasad Bakhar, Shivaji is quoted as saying, "Amhi Chitodche
Sisodia Rajput (We are Sisodia Rajputs from Rajasthan).
"There are various views about the origins of the Bhosale family,"
says Dr G.T. Kulkarni, a contemporary historian. "Dhere's thesis is
one of them. People tend to get very emotional whenever the topic of
Shivaji comes up for discussion, so we will have to analyse the
evidence scientifically." He points out that in a letter Shivaji
addressed his commander Jedhe Deshmukh as 'Rajputani Deshmukh.' At
the same time, no letter has been discovered in which Shivaji claims
that he is a Rajput, says Kulkarni.
"I will not take any sides," says B.M. Purandare, who is popularly
known as Shivshahir because of the talks he delivers on the life of
Shivaji. "Instead, I will tell the people that Dhere's is one of the
many theories about the origins of the Bhosale family."
Bedekar says that there is no concrete evidence in Dhere's book to
prove that Baliappa is the founder of the Bhosale family. "So far, no
historical work on Shivaji has provided the genealogical link between
Baliappa and Shivaji's great-grandfather Babaji Raje Bhosale," he
says. "Baliappa lived in the 13th century while Babaji lived in the
16th century. We must know the names in this missing lineage; only
then can we come to a conclusion about Shivaji's origin."
According to the evidence, he says, the Bhosale family can be traced
three generations prior to Shivajito Shahaji, Maloji and Babaji.
Have you forgotten - Vasudev Balwant Phadake, Chaphekar brothers who were lynched.
Lokmaanya Tilak who was in prison at Mandale ?

Forced Conversions to Hinduism
Mahavir Sanglikar
Hinduism is being forced on the followers of Non-Vedic religions like Jainism,
Buddhism and Sikhism. The people forcing it do not tell you to go to Hindu
temples or perform rituals, but they just change your religious identity. They
write your religion as Hindu wherever possible.
All this starts right from the admission of the pregnant woman to the maternity
home. When the registration process goes on, the clerk writes her religion as
Hindu, without asking her or her relatives accompanying her. For these clerks,
if the woman is not a Muslim or Christian, then she is a Hindu. After the birth
of the child, the doctor issues a birth certificate mentioning the child's
religion as a Hindu. For the parents, the religion is not important at that time
as they are in heaven. They do not take pain even for reading it. But
thereafter, whenever they see the birth certificate, they find that their child
is converted to Hinduism.
Same thing happens in the school while the admission of the child. The parents
do not know that here also their child is growing as a Hindu. They realize it
only when the student gets a `School Leaving Certificate' from the school. It
mentions the religion of the student as Hindu-Sikh or Hindu-Punjabi in case of
Sikhs, Hindu-Jain in case of Jains and Hindu-Buddhist in case of Buddhists.
Sometimes it mentions just `Hindu'. So the School Leaving Certificate is
actually Certificate of Religious Conversion to Hinduism.
The most stupid thing in these School Leaving Certificates is that there is no
standardized format for it. One school mentions `Religion and caste', other
mentions `Race and religion', another mentions `Race and caste'. Who knows about
race? But many schools have a `Race' column on the leaving certificate. It is
there because it was there while British rule. Change is not acceptable.
Now let us speak about the census. On every tenth year, the Census Commission of
India counts the people of India. The Census form mentions 7 religions namely
Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Jain, Buddhist and Parsi. The followers of other
religions are counted under `Other' column. But while census, the data
collectors do the same thing what the clerks in hospitals do. They do not ask
religion at all. For them all those are Hindus if their name is not a Muslim or
Christian name. This happens not just because of lack of knowledge. It is being
done systematically by the Hindutwa minded people working as Census Data
Collectors.
The population of Hindus in India is about 79%. It is because of the forced
Hinduism. We can not know the actual population of Jains, Buddists, Sikhs in
India. We can not know the actual population of Adivasis and Nomadic tribes, who
are not Hindus but they are counted as Hindus.
