Excerpt from review by Paul J. Sampson, Non-fiction Editor,
Eclectica.org
"Women have been writing sexy poems at least since Sappho, and both
genders are still reading them with pleasure. Harriet Green's
collection, 'Luciana: Below The Belt', is a bright new blossom on
this old vine. (The comparison to a growing plant comes easily when
you read her poem 'Fruity Salad'. You'll never take strawberries for
granted again. And pears!) I have to wonder how women who read this
book will see the poet. This male reader wants to see her close up,
soon, and frequently. The author gives us a few glimpses, by the way,
in the black-and-white photographs she scatters throughout the book.
However, the real image of the poet comes from the poems, not the
pictures. This is a complex woman who writes in several styles, from
saucy to funny to serious, as the subject demands. She is sexually
frank - very frank - but never nasty. She is unafraid of herself, her
body, her emotions or her mind - and certainly not afraid of words.
Spend some time with her, reading her words, preferably aloud, and
perhaps with someone who is important to you.
4. Poetry and Art in the Museum of the Living Artist, Balboa Park,
San Diego
Poetry and Art is a quarterly series dedicated to giving people an
opportunity to express themselves in a variety of artistic forms and
styles. It is a free speech event with the purpose of exposing the
diversity and the greatness of our region¹s artists. Audiences will
hear poetry and prose in dialogue with painting, photography,
sculpture, and other art forms. The two featured artists serve not
only as entertainment, but also as inspiration for developing
artists. The open mic portion of the show is for all artists and
performers to strut their stuff. There will be music throughout,
performed by Israel Maldonado (guitar) and Shannon Bates (saxophone).
The next Poetry and Art event features the editor of Poetry
International, Fred Moramarco, and Cecil Hayduke, moderator of the
San Diego Poetry Slam at Voz Alta. The show is set for Wednesday,
Feb. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the Museum of the Living Artist, 1439 El
Prado, Balboa Park. Come perform or sit back and enjoy the show!
