I haven't actually read that much of Usagi, but it is an enjoyable American(sort of Hawaiian considering that's where the writer lived for most of his life) samurai. The comic style can get annoying at times, it's sort of a Groo style, a lot of sword sticking but no blood. It just gets annoying slightly. I recommend that you try out the first novel and see what you think.

Coming back to America are you, Andy. Here's another recommendation for you, if you're a role-player you might enjoy Knights of the Dinner Table. It's a role-playing cartoon and sometimes a little unnervingly familiar. The small episodes with the spoof of Call of Cuthulu(Scream of Kuchuloo) is great! If you're interested in seeing some of this I'd be more than glad to scan you a few pages. I am guessing that you haven't seen it considering your absence from the states.

By the way, I don't mean to just "Create Speak" or anything, but has anyone read Usagi Yojimbo?  I heard a little bit about it but don't know if I should acutally take the effort to order the graphic novels from Amazon.  Has someone read it that could say something about it?  Thanks-

Sorry for all the emails today.  Here is one last thing to think about: I am tired as hell and worn out in mind and body (and this is my "vacation"), but I hammered out my Reasons and Hopes for this list.  Feel free to critique or ignore it.  I'm going to put this online on that page with the mailing list rule (the thing about "put *s on the spoiler emails").

Insider Info- I mentioned that I'm part of about 6 other mailing lists- mostly for Roleplaying games like Everway and Sengoku.  The difference between these two mailing lists is the following:
Everway is a list that is ALL about discussion.  In other words, there's not much tangible concrete Information or Press-release sort of material.
Sengoku (this is the highly acclaimed game that's based on the warring era of Japan- 200 years before the MnJ story) is a list that is about half or more Press Releases and tangible information, and much less discussion.

Of the two above, I'm about to drop off the Everway list because I just don't feel part of the discussion- it just isn't that useful for me to read through these daily archives anymore.  Sengoku, however, I'll stay on for awhile, even though I never take part in any of the discussions- there's enough tangible info about the game, Japan and it's history, and other stuff to keep it interesting.

Basically, my thoughts are that there is enough info about manga, Japan, chambara fighting, anime and the like on this list that it will stay interesting for a long time, at least until the series ends and all the manga have been translated.  IN OTHER WORDS, even if you don't participate in discussions, DON'T FLEE!  This whole mailing list will have its fair share of various discussions unrelated to MnJ, but it has a core of direct-to-subscriber information that ought to keep you informed without having to scour the Net for tidbits of MnJ info.

Well, enough of that- I'm off to Karate!

Anyway here it is>>>

There was one main reason that I created this mailing list: To create a central hub for MnJ/BoI information for all of us fans.  In formation includes things like home page updates, significant comic or manga news, news about the author of Mugen no Jyuunin, or any other manga, anime, Japanese learning, or related information.  I wanted to create this hub for us now before 10 people decided to put up small mailing lists or BBSes later- Instead of 10 fractured and inconvenient resources being created, we now have 2 strong, convenient, and very useful resources for Blade of the Immortal/Mugen no Jyuunin on the web: This Mugen no Jyuunin Mailing list/club and the Yahoo: An Immortal Obsession club.

There was one hope that I had for the list: To keep it as "laid back" and "hands-free" as possible.  This mailing list could essentially be considered a Message Board that gets delivered to your mailbox.  In other words, once you sign up for this list you don't have to worry about visiting a particular BoI/MnJ site every day for new info, and you don't have to go hunting the Internet for rumors about the manga- they will soon make their way to this mailing list, and from there go directly to your mailbox.  While the Manji egroup is essentially an "online community", it is even more a time-saving hands-free information network.

So you shouldn't feel like you don't belong if you don't participate in the discussions that will occur on the list.  Even if you never post a single message, you'll still be reaping the benefits of the Manji Mailing list.  While discussion about various topics not directly related to BoI/MnJ will certainly happen on the list, I wanted tomake this list in a way that wouldn't necessarily pressure everyone to "hop aboard" whatever discussion happened to be going on at the time.

So sit back and let the information come!

PS- With the "archive" feature at eGroups.com you can choose to receive all your emails for the day in one large, indexed email.  I highly recommend this for most of you- For those of you who want the latest MnJ info but don't feel like taking part in all of the discussions that will happen on the list.

I'm about to make this announcement at my site, but I figure I'd tell you all first.  That's what this list is all about!

Sorry if it looks too "press release-y"- My mind was so blown by recent knowledge that I had to get it out, even if it means that the method I use to spread the word looks like unaduterated praise for a Company.  Anyway:
(as cut from my site)
>>>
SASUGA JAPANESE BOOKSTORE CAN ORDER AFTERNOON! At the price of US $54.00 for the manga and $22.50 for shipping for 6 months, you can get the best Mangabon in the business- this is the same one that features Mugen no Jyuunin (Blade of the Immortal), BLAME!, Aaah! Megamisama, Eden, Discommunication, Narutaru and over 30 other regular manga.  Sasuga is the only company that orders Afternoon air mail- if other companies order it at all, they do so by sea mail, which arrives in North America about 1-2 months after the Japanese release.  Sasuga releases Afternoon in North America the same week as Japan, and can sometimes release it sooner than Japanese stores can!
You might think that the total of $76.50 for half a year is too high, but if you are a manga/comic fan or a Japanese learner, this price is quite reasonable- imagine paying only $12.75 a month for 32 or more excellent comic books!  That's essentially what the monthly Afternoon mangabon is.  You couldn't get comics that cheap in America- they would come out to at least $104+ a month!
>>>

You can find links to Sasuga all over my site.  I know that when I get back to the states in the Fall I'm definately going to order Afternoon from Sasuga- it's the only way to keep my homepage new.  Anyway, if you go for it, tell them "Andy" sent you!

i dib being makie....not only do i get to be amazingly good at using a pike, have a mysterious and tragic past, i also get to be tall. goody!

>Which dictionary are you using?
i've got two, the smaller version of the hadamizky/spahn, and kodansha's pocket kanji dictionary, with the 1006 kanji you're supposed to know before you go to high school.

>Also, could you give an example of a reading/meaning >that came out different
>in the BoI version?
>I have a couple of ideas why this is happening:

i didn't think of that one. it's probably the case in some of the situtations.

>2) Dictionary may be too small. Not that you need to run out and get the
>Spahn/Hadamitzky 4kg doorstop/rat killer/kanji reference >tool or anything...
this was my theory so far. somebody tried to tell me that i needed to buy nelson's, but even if i could afford it, i wouldn't be able to lift it. mostly what's going on is that there are different meanings for the same kanji in the two dictionaries. take, ummm..., 'ki', as in 'genki'. the hadamitzky/spahn says 'spirit, soul, mood' while the kodansha says 'air, weather, feeling, sign, appearance'. so sometimes the word i'm looking for is in one of them, sometimes both, and sometimes neither. and of course the compound kanji's usually arent' in either dictionary, so i end up guesssing by putting the two meanings together in as many different combinations as possible. argh! frustrating.
thanks for the ideas

Which dictionary are you using?
Also, could you give an example of a reading/meaning that came out different
in the BoI version?

I have a couple of ideas why this is happening:
1) The kanji is part of an expression. For example, if a Japanese person
sees a comic with the expression, "That's the bomb", they would be thinking
A-Bomb, grenade, etc. But then when the comic becomes translated into
Japanese, it might come out as "That's nice". Totally different words, but
generally the same meaning.
2) Dictionary may be too small. Not that you need to run out and get the
Spahn/Hadamitzky 4kg doorstop/rat killer/kanji reference tool or anything...

Any one else have ideas why?

1) I guess that ruckus over the weekend with not being able to login and all was that a giant merger between onelist and egroups was going down.  So essentially, since everything works with a onelist.com extension All is Cool, but the "official" addresses for the email list and the webpage is www.egroups.com and @egroups.com.  So if you ever see me mention "Egroups" from now on instead of Onelist, you know that everythings the same, only the name is different.

2) I thought that the "email digest" format- the format that allows you to receive all your emails bundled together daily (you can change this for your accountat the egroups site), didn't allow you to see Japanese characters.  I was wrong- what was happening in the other list was that someone was using a special font or something that wasn't coming out right.  If the Japanese is in the main text of the email, and not the SUBJECT LINE, it will probably be able to be read even in daily digest format.
This is good news for people who don't want to wade through a ton of emails (should such a thing happen on this list).  Actually, I'm on or moderating about 5 other mailing lists, and I get all the emails in digest format except one list (well, two including this one)- it's quite a handy feature.

3) I'm preparing a small "I have a dream" kind of email that just puts into writing my expectations of this list.  But then, it's not MY list, but OUR list, so feel free to do the same.

4) RECRUIT!!! Tell everyone you know who reads BoI about this list.  It's not my personal goal to see how many freaks we can sign up at once or anything, but I'd rather get everyone at least "in the know" about this list so that someone else creates another list or group, not knowing that there's already a big list out there.  Basically, unless we get HUNDREDS of freaks in here, I think that the world would benefit with 2 major BoI communities- this group and the Yahoo "An Immortal Obsesion" Club.
The reason I say this isn't to be cruel or anything, but I noticed that the following happens a lot:

This is my Very Short Tenchu Story-
1) There's an awesome 3D Ninja assasination game for the PSX called Tenchu.
2) There is a cult following surrounding this game, including yours truly (and I don't even play that many games)
3) There are a number of Tenchu homepages with Bulletin Boards, 3 at last count.
4) There are a number of Yahoo Clubs about Tenchu, each with their own members and bulletin boards, 4 at last count.
5) The number of people who regularly visit/add to those BBSes is about 6 people per group.
6) So to get any reliable information, or to post any reliable information, you have to visit each and every one of those BBSes.
7) So those fan sites are essentially inconvenient, if not entirely useless.
8) What the hell were they thinking?

I mean, did the people who made those clubs and BBSes not know that there were 6 other groups that are essentially exactly the same with hardly any members?  Did they know this, yet think "Even though mine is exactly the same, SOMEHOW this will be a Big, Great community that will attract lots of members so we can all share in the greatness of the game"?  I don't know.

Call me and Birdie Hunter (from the Yahoo group) "Anotsu", and call this group and the Yahoo Club "Itto-ryu", and watch us go around stomping on and assimilating all the BoI-reading "samurai" into our folds until nothing stands in our way... at least until our members grow enough that splintering into mini-groups would be useful and not self-defeating.
I don't know- or does this sound bogus to anyone?  It's just that that Tenchu stuff drove me nuts so that I never look at those BBSes any more, and there are so many other "fringe culture" groups out there (games, manga, books, movies) that go the same way...

Well ... I wasn't 100% "gotten."

I kinda fell for it initially, but it was that whole
rushing-to-get-the-news-out business that made me think it was a joke, since
the manga had been out for a week at that point. And besides, surely
somebody else would have reported such a big event...

But then the hours ticked by without an "April Fools!" announcement (and
Jae's site posted the "news"), and I felt my resolve weakening... hence my
frantic post to the mailing list pretty much as soon as the egroups site
reopened.

So for a while there, Andy had me going. Meanie. Oh well, the scans of the
next chapter _almost_ make up for it... ^_^

Nice to see so many women on the list. And nice to see a fellow U of C'er,

Yes, it was a prank.  A dirty April Fools prank.  It was low, rotten, and very very funny.  I mean, horrible.

Anyway, I just made an update today on my page saying as much.  I was "gotten" by a Dungeons and Dragons site, and I thought that it would be fun to see what would happen if I did a similar thing to the manga crowd.  Unfortunately, I only had 10 minutes to update my site, else I was going to scan in old pictures from the first manga and say they were new "...and Yaobikuni comes back too!", and make it even more deceptive, but I did what I could.  Anyone else play any cruel pranks worth note?

Well, this is a great start for a mailing list.  Since you all signed up so fast, I figure you're the ones who really care about the series, so I guess as an apology (well, not so much an apology as a "thanks for playing along"), here are the new pics.  I haven't had time to put up a translation, I may get to it tonight but I'm not sure.  But here's the directory and you can check out the pics from there:

Be ware, though, there are "spoilers" in those pics.  Nothing more than usual if you're used to my monthly manga updates, though.

Thanks for playing along, too.  And good for you for figuring it out, too!  A big hand goes out to Jesse Wooden and Darnell Gamiao...

Maybe you have to sign in, to register with Onelist to become a "real
member". If you just use the Subscribe email to sign up, you only have
access to the mailing list, but if you want to edit your account, you'll
have to go to www.onelist.com and "create an account". If you have an
account already, just "register".

Also, wanted to remind everyone that if you try to email the list from an
"unregistered" email address, the email will be spit back in your face. I
could make it so that ANYONE (even "non-members") can sign up to the list,
but that opens the list up to the possibility of spamming from outsiders...

Well, now that the list has opened, I guess I'll ask the obligatory
first question...

Namely, what's this business about MnJ _ending_?!?  I mean, I knew it
was in its final story arc, but it seemed like there was more than 40
pages worth of loose ends to tie up!

So, if indeed MnJ did end, and that April 1st timing of the
announcement was pure coincidence...

How on earth did it wrap up?

Ok, this is weird. I'm getting the mail from this list since I subscribed to
it, but the page won't believe I'm a member. Anyone help?

Ok, I will believe it is an April Fool's joke because I want to. But, I have
officially lost some faith in Andy becuase of it. Sorry bud, I love your
page, but you've lost major credibility with me becuase that was just TOO
cruel ;_;

I just checked my post on the site and it says I posted at 8:09am. I actually posted at 4:09am. What's with this crazy list?

Seriously, I love the concept and can't wait to get replies. This is my second mailing list subscription. ( third actually. I canced the second one. They were both manga related.)

P.S. Laura, it is nice to see that this list won't be entirely male dominated. I always apprechiate a womans opinion. Jesse in this case is a man's name, sorry. Hope we have a nice balance of male and female though.

It was an April fools prank Andy played on half the world. I have the May issue of Afternoon and can tell you that Mugen no Jyunin is not over. I just sent him an email about this before I joined the list. I'm serious when I say half the world. Another MnJ site took Andy's prank  seriously and fallowed his story on their update page.

I told Andy he should straighten this whole thing out before it went to far. That was only an hour ago. I also emailed the webmaster of the above page on this topic.

Hey, Andy or anyone. I don't know if my subscription to the list is working or not. It' been 10 minutes and I haven't gotten any list related emails or some sort of conformation that you usually get with these mailing lists. My setting is set to recieve email. The site says I'm a member, but I don't trust it.

I agree, if it did end, that is a bad mixture of coincidence and cruelty .
not to mention too many loose ends left untied.

Konbawa!

You mentioned in the test message (as it were) that if I were reading
this, I came upon this list by accident. Actually, I searched like
crazy for a Blade of the Immortal mailing list! Ever since I found
Blade of the Immortal on the shelves of my local comic store, I have
been addicted. It looked so unique amongst all these other titles with
futuristic or superhero concepts. I love the book, I find it to be
unlike any other manga or comic book out there. Hiroaki Samura is an
artistic and literary genius, both the concept and the artwork are
wonderfully fresh departures from the standard manga/comic format. I'm
pleased to learn that there's a forum in which I can meet other fans of
the series and discuss this intruiging and engaging story.
I'm looking forward to the "grand opening" of the list!

Regards,
- J

This is a test of the Blade of the Immortal/Mugen no
Jyuunin mailing list. This list will go online later
this week (after I email 1000+ people about it).

If you found this list, it is by accident. But
welcome anyway! Looking forward to hearing from
you...

Andy
