Elegba Folklore Society will present Juneteenth, A Freedom Celebration
2007 at the Manchester Dock on Sunday, June 24 beginning at 2:00pm. The
Manchester Dock is on the south side of the James River at the end of
Maury Street. This historic commemoration will include keynote talks,
ceremonies, performances, food, art and imports along with special
activities for children. Juneteenth will culminate in the Annual Torch
Lit Walk on the Trail of Enslaved Africans, beginning about 6:00pm,
with staged interpretations happening at the Dock, at the Canal Walk's
Turning Basin, the recently unveiled Reconciliation Statue, at the site
of the infamous Lumpkin's Jail in Shockoe Bottom and at the Burial
Ground for Negroes at 16th and Broad Streets, where a Healing the City
ceremony will be given. The program will happen rain or shine.
