Bill,

Here is a translation.  It is always difficult to translate something that is intended to rhyme in the original.  Also, the reference to the Christmas goat is correct as I understand from old Swedish customs before Santa.

Christmas in New Sweden
1901
by
Paulina Malmquist

To the end of the world, Santa in his travels came,
and left a box, that was far from empty,
but filled with much, both useful and fun alike,
to father, mother and Milla, and neighbors as well.

Now the box must opened be, 'cause restless curiosity is set aflame,
and sugar tongs in daddy's strong hand were bent,
With hammer and ax, noise and din is made,
until in our sight, opened up, the box it stands.

Now there life and stir, we were running back and forth,
everything must be seen and all the verse also must be read,
we read, we laughed, the packages we opened up,
and string and paper all around were thrown.

Now the neighbors were called, and to each was given his,
a bigger surprise you could not have arranged,
blankets came in a flurry up, gloves were put on,
all the slippers were tried on, and the mittens too.

The Christmas hamper opened were, the coffee kettle on the stove put on;
a celebration bar none there were soon to be.
But to describe for you with words that fit
how the cookies taste, to that I am not fit.

One thing for sure made no one sad,
and nothing else but Milla's thimble that was,
as when she the old one took and to the light held up,
a dozen holes she counted in its rounded top.

Yes, such a joy after all, a Christmas goat there was,
'cause now dad and mum can walk with more than socks;
And when Jack Frost Milla's fingers try to bite,
disappointed he has to turn back, as she her mittens use.

Then a lot of other things, both this and that, in the box we found,
and how that will be received I presently can not tell;
on Friday eve those things upon branches of the Christmas tree will
be hung
to bring joy to some little chap who nothing expected he'd get.

Hi Jean & Bill!

Tack! Great! Will it be possible to buy a dvd copy of the film later?

It´s been a tough winter over here - finally melting to swimming water. Probably work my last term as a teacher and will do more of journalist freelancing instead. Might do something about NS, one way or the other. To that end - could you tell me if the oldboys Ralph Ostlund and Clyde Jepson are still on the run?

Fascinating that Swedish midsommar soon is ahead again, already - both sides of the ocean :)

Talk to you later!

Hi Bill!

Another midsommar passed away. Thanks for pictural evidence. Here we have all this in front of us - tomorrow, actually is midsommarafton (midsummer´s eve). Heard from Paul that you had alot of rain this year. If it helps we share this phenomenon with you. Very much so since some days.

All the best to you and jean,

Hello!

I have this information:

Martha M. Nelson was born 1901 August 24 (according to what I've been told)
and her father's name was Carl Nelson and Martha were born in Sweden. They
emigrated to North America around 1901-1903.
Martha (Martha Nelson of New Sweden) was later married to Carl David Anderson
(born in Woodland, Maine).
Carl David's parents were Carl Gustaf Anderson and Wilhelmina Josephina
Svalstedt.

What I wonder about is if anyone knows anything about Martha M. Nelson, and if
I have the right birth date on her? Does anyone know anything about her family
(father, mother, siblings)?

Best regards,
Christina Sylejmani

Hello :)

My great-aunt's name was also Martha Nelson, but middle initial I (for Isabella), born in New Sweden about 1888 to Johan Nilsson and Pernilla (Nellie) Persdotter Nygren - of Svenstrop and Vasby (Malmo) Sweden respectively.

"My" Martha was the sister to my grandmother, Carolina Albertina Nelson (Nillsson), born in New Sweden March 9, 1886.  Two older brothers - Philip and Emil - were born about 1876 and 1878 in Portland, Maine before the family moved to New Sweden.  Two other sisters, Ellen and Mary, were born in New Sweden in 1881 and 1883, respectively.

Geneaology is amazing, isn't it!  It gives one a sense of continuity with preceding generations.

I also had a Martha Nelson in my family! My mother's maiden name was Osell
and this was an older sister. This Martha married
a John Nelson from Stockholm, Maine. The Osell's came from Sweden in 1888.
This is what makes genealogy

So Linda, are you related to Ralph Ostlund and Gerry Nelson from New Sweden?

Yes, geneaology is indeed amazing.

I am not sure that I have the right birth date on "my" Martha M Nelson but I
have been told that she was born 1901 August 24 and that she was 2-3 years old
when the family left Sweden and came to the USA.

One of the children to Martha M. Nelson and Carl Gustaf Anderson was Viola Peary
of Washburn.

I would appreciate if anyone knew anything about Martha M. Nelson.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am an acoustic guitar player and singer of old fashioned hymns. I am interested in finding hymns of Lina Sandell Berg which have been translated into English along with the music, other than the two standby’s ‘Day by Day’ and ‘Children of the Heavenly Father’.  I think the depth of her words and beauty of the music of Oscar Ahnfelt are more than worth sharing in this hurried, shallow age in modern America.

Can you help me or direct me to a place where more of her music can be obtained?

Thank you very much.

Mr. Carhart,
I looked up Lina Sandell info on a search last evening to find more about her and her music. I did find out quite a bit. I was not familiar with her before reading your email. I also located a couple sites in my search that have some of her music available to listen to online. My deceased maternal grandfather was a Sandell and his family lived in Smaland like Lina Sandell-Berg, but he was born in the 1880's a generation later.
Possibly someone else at maineswedishcolony@... might know where you get some of her music. Since she was born in 1832 & passed on in 1903 that would be before phonograph records were developed.
That is about all I can find for now.
