I did a search on Google for Maine Swedish Colony.

I made my way to a nice site about Stockholm:
http://www.umit.maine.edu/~katherine.hoving/index.html

Created by Katherine Hoving <Katherine_Hoving@...>
The Site is at:

I intend to add a link to the MSC website.

For all of you in or around the Portland area:

The Center for Maine History presents a noontime lecture from Glenn Parkinson, Stories From Maine's Skiing Heritage. February 5, 2002 at noon.

(the following is the abstract from the Center's membership flyer) The sport of skiing was brought to Maine in the 1870s by the Swedish immigrants who settled the town of New Sweden. Join Glenn Parkinson, author of the award winning book First Tracks: Stories from Maine's Skiing Heritage, to learn more about the history of one of our favorite winter sports.

Other than that, looking forward to the daily dose of home, folklore, and stories about the Swedish Colony. If any of you see my parents (Nancy Hudak or Ernie Easter) say hello for me. ; )

Thanks,
Kate

Wanted to extend my thanks to whom ever was involved with the
coming-out party and celebration of the introduction of the new
website for the Maine Swedish Colony on Jan. 20th at the New Sweden
School.
Had an interesting and informational time. Looking forward to
finding out more how the calendar events will work out; would be a
great place to schedule meetings and events.

Mainešs Swedish Colony celebrates local culture.

     A public celebration on Sunday 20 January 2002, from noon4:00 p.m. at
the New Sweden School, introduced the new website of Mainešs Swedish Colony.
Among the individuals and groups who shared their cultural and artistic
activities were Richard Clark (paintings), Julie Armstrong (spinning and
weaving), Paul Carlson (antiques and candle making), Rita Olson (paintings),
Andy Olson (blacksmithing), Doug and Rita Anderson (paintings), Arlene
Ferguson (drawing), Kristine and Carl Bondeson (sheaves), Bill Duncan (web
site and photos), Woodland Historical Society, and Stockholm Historical
Society. Susan Clark played piano, Pastor Jim Morgan led an impromptu chorus
of "Sancta Lucia" in Swedish, and Dan Olson assisted as Master of
Ceremonies. Director of the Discovery Research project, John and Rosemary
Hede acted as hosts and hot cider and cookies were served. Discussions
ranged from wool spinning to proposed interstate highway routes impact on
local culture.
Featured on the website is a cultural directory listing activities of
over 400 people who have a tie to the Colony area. The New Sweden Historical
Society, Woodland Historical Society, Stockholm Historical Society, and
Maine's Swedish Colony, Inc. are compiling this cultural directory with
assistance from a Discovery Research grant from the Maine Arts Commission.
To view the cultural directory and comment on the website, go to:
<http://geocities.com/maineswedishcolony>
A directory web page is available to anyone or any organization with a
cultural connection to the area. A printed version of the directory is
available at each local historical society.
For those wishing to be listed in future editions, or for more
information, please address comments and questions to Maine's Swedish
Colony, Inc., P.O. Box 50, New Sweden, ME 04762. Contact John Hede, project
director, at 896-3177 <jhede@...> or Bill Duncan, web designer, at
896-3461, <duncan@...>.
The site also includes the online version of "Mainešs Historic 1870
Swedish Colony: History, Map and Tourguide," which provides historical and
visitor information on the whole colony area. There is also the "Report on
Discovery Research Fieldwork in the Swedish Colony" by folklorist Michael
Shippee. An email group has been formed to discuss cultural issues relevant
to the Colony. A public calendar of cultural events is also available.
The cultural directory is funded in part by a grant from The Maine Arts
Commission, the New Century Community Program, and the National Endowment of
the Arts, a federal agency. The New Century Community Program is a
collaborative initiative of seven cultural organizations providing matching
grants and technical assistance to Maine communities. Funded by the people
of Maine, the program seeks to assist towns in developing their cultural and
educational resources.

Helen Nelson Jarvis: At the Celebration on Sunday Jan. 20, I was
excited to have an opportunity to look at the family history that you
wrote! The Woodland Historical Society had their copy on display.
(Thanks also to Herb and Janet Ketch for sharing some Woodland history
with me.)
Thank you for sharing information about your grandfather and father,
Andreas and Nicholas Nelson. It helps me to understand and learn more
about the community where my ancestors lived
I found one other bit of information in my great-uncle's letters home
(http://www.geocities.com/harrybuzzell/) regarding your father, I
think: (this is from a letter written by Harry Buzzell on Jan. 11,
1917 in Hartford, Conn. to his mother, Mary Thomas Buzzell, in Colby)
"[Uncle Joe] is very good to talk with and he asks a lot of questions
in regard to the folks the horses and crops and all about the new city
[Colby] up there. He had quite a laugh about the time he was up there
and he went down to the Nelson place to thrash do you remember how
mudy [muddy] it was."
I hope to be able to read your family history in detail sometime!

HEDE, Richard Iver Charles, 75

STOCKHOLM - Richard Iver Charles Hede, 75, died at a Bangor hospital, Jan. 27, 2002, after a short illness. Richard had survived open-heart surgery to replace two heart valves only to succumb to liver failure. Born in Stockholm, Oct. 7, 1926, to Hilma (Nelson) and Olof Elliot Hede, the fourth of 12 children, Richard led a rich and diverse life and will be sadly missed by his remaining seven siblings and numerous friends and relatives, with whom he had associated. Richard attended grade schools in Stockholm, Jackson and Bingham, graduating as valedictorian from the two-year Stockholm High School. Richard completed high school at Hillhouse High at the top of his class in 1944. Richard served two years in the U.S. Navy as radio/radar specialist from 1944 to 1946. After the service, he attended the University of Maine in Orono, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering physics; then at the University of Rochester Medical School under an Atomic Energy Commission Radiological Physics Fellowship Program, then continued the fellowship at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Yaphank, Long Island, N.Y., where he worked as radiation safety officer on the high-energy accelerator Cosmotron. In 1952, he worked at the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska at College, Alaska. The following year, Richard did biophysical research (single crystal growth, infra-red spectroscopy and x-ray crystallography) and also some teaching at the University of Michigan Physics Department. Later he did research for several years on microbiology and the structure of DNA using bacteriophage. In 1957, Richard worked for the federal government in radiation safety (Radiological Defense) as radiological defense officer in Region One, covering New England, New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Island, developing programs and overseeing instrumentation grants. Richard had devoted enormous time to the Swedish Colony where he compiled the Centennial History of the area in 1970 and in 1981 the Stockholm Centennial Book. In 1989, he helped organize Maine's Swedish Colony Inc., the historical and preservation society to preserve the Lars Noak Blacksmith & Woodworking shop, the last one-room school house, and the Larsson/Ostlund log home. Richard was successful in obtaining a number of grants for the area and worked hard to obtain monies for the upkeep and operation of the Stockholm Historical Society Museum and the New Sweden Historical Society and Maine's Swedish Colony, Inc. buildings. Richard was dedicated to his siblings and lent assistance whenever needed. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Nelson, Daniel and Keith; and sister, Bertha Rasmussen. He is survived by his brother, Howard of Stockholm; his brother, John and wife, Rosemary of Madawaska Lake; his sister, Janet Sandstrom and husband, Dale of Willow, Alaska; his brother, Harold and wife, Andrea of Eustis, Fla.; his sister, Gladys Merritt of Orono; his sister, Kathleen and husband, William McCormick of Palm Bay, Fla.; his sister, Patricia Mishou of Veazie; his good friend, Rena Hultgren of Madawaska Lake, as well as several nieces and nephews. A memorial service celebrating the life of Richard will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Stockholm, with Fr. James Morgan officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church. Interment will be at Stockholm Cemetery, in the spring. Memorials in memory of Richard may be sent to Maine's Swedish Colony, Inc., P.O. Box 50, New Sweden, ME 04762; the Stockholm Historical Society, 280 Maine St., Stockholm, ME 04783; or to New Sweden Historical Society, P.O. Box 33, New Sweden, ME 04762. Envelopes will be available at the church or from Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou.

Rita/Andy Olson, I thank you for the reply, is there a listing of early Swedish
Settlers in the area? I believe some of the settlers
originated from Sweden in the same area as my ancestors, thanks for any info,
Roy Arndt.

Roy, my name is Carolyn Hildebrand. I am currently president of the New
Sweden Historical Society. I will try to find out any info I can for you.
I checked the list of Declarations of Intention and Naturalizations in New
Sweden, ME 1873-1900. I found 3 Peter Nelson's-
Peter H. Nelson WP, No. 7-249, born 1855, arrived 1871, naturalized
March 4, 1880 (appears to have been unmarried at this time)
Peter Nelson, WP, No. 10-78, arrived 1884, naturalized December 13,
1894. Peter Nelson declared his intent in the Supreme Judiciary of
Piscataquis County, Dover, ME Dec 27, 1891, at which time he stated his age

     Per W. Nelson, No. 10-130, born 1838, arrived 1883, naturalized Dec. 11,
1899. Per Nelson born Jan 11, 1838, died June 12, 1903 is buried in the
Westmanland Cemetery-Tombstone inscription in New Sweden.
I obtained this info from the "Swedish American Genealogist" publication.

Hi maineswedishcolony Egroup,

I have put together a schedule page based on info from Debbie Blanchette and
the schedule that came from Rita and Andy. I have used some editorial
license to highlight the activity instead of the sponsor/host. I have added
some events that were discussed at last meeting.
Have I left anything out? Do you have any suggestions for changes?
Please proofread and forward corrections to me.
I had a thought to add thank you's to those who donated prizes for the
raffle.

When I read this original inquiry, I knew that if I called my father,
he'd likely know something about the people involved. My father is John
A. Larsson, born 1920 in New Sweden (grandson of L.P. Larsson, founder
of the Jemtland store, referenced a couple of times on the Colony's
webpage at http://www.geocities.com/mscguide/nshist.html
<http://www.geocities.com/mscguide/nshist.html> ).

Sure enough, my father remembers Peter Nelson quite well. In fact, he
informs me that Peter Nelson gave him his first haircut! My father
reports that there is at least one Nelson relative now living in the New
Sweden area: Mrs. Frances Nelson, who was in my father's class at
Jemtland grammar school. Mrs. Nelson married Ralph Nelson, who was a
nephew of Peter. Yahoo shows a Frances Nelson with an addresss on
Station Rd, New Sweden, ME 04762-0000.

My father believes that Frida Arndt came to New Sweden from the midwest:
Chicago, he would guess, but he isn't sure.

Frida and Peter adopted a daughter, Virginia (called "Virgie"), who
married Clarence Malm and lived in the New Sweden area for several
years. After WWII, they moved to the "Little Maine" area of upstate New
York, west of the Finger Lakes.

Feel free to contact my father. He now lives at The Arbors, 403 West
Center St., Apt 230, Manchester, CT 06040.

Roy, my name is Carolyn Hildebrand. I am currently president of the New
Sweden Historical Society. I will try to find out any info I can for
you.
I checked the list of Declarations of Intention and Naturalizations in
New
Sweden, ME 1873-1900. I found 3 Peter Nelson's-
Peter H. Nelson WP, No. 7-249, born 1855, arrived 1871, naturalized
March 4, 1880 (appears to have been unmarried at this time)
Peter Nelson, WP, No. 10-78, arrived 1884, naturalized December 13,
1894. Peter Nelson declared his intent in the Supreme Judiciary of
Piscataquis County, Dover, ME Dec 27, 1891, at which time he stated his
age
was 30.
Per W. Nelson, No. 10-130, born 1838, arrived 1883, naturalized Dec.
11,
1899. Per Nelson born Jan 11, 1838, died June 12, 1903 is buried in the
Westmanland Cemetery-Tombstone inscription in New Sweden.

Everyone enjoyed the Swedish Club Meet on March 8th. The Pot-luck
was tremendous with selections from hot chowder to caviar from

inbetween, delectable dishes overflowed the serving table, there was
a variety of luscious deserts too! The slide presentation was
educational and entertaining. Lilting sounds of the Swedish language
presented in the room from time to time. A great time was had by all.

There are several other minor changes.

Have we left anything out?
Do you have any suggestions for changes?

On Wednesday April 24, 2002 the Bangor Daily News will feature

Swedish food, dances, costumes, music and holiday celebrations."

Does anyone know where I can find the words and music to a song from about
1930 called "The New Sweden Waltz" by Bob Johnson? Johnson was a champion
ski marathoner and a popular accordian player in New Sweden and Caribou in
the 1930's. He wrote "The New Sweden Waltz" in Swedish, and later there was
an English translation. The song tells about the different parts of the town
of New Sweden and some of the people who lived here.

Any tips about where I can find this song would be appreciated!
