Hi Jean,
The names of the first 51 settlers are listed in the town history (the three-ring binder with the blue covers). You can also see the names of the first 51 on the bronze plaque on the back side of the stone memorialthat stands in front of hte New Sweden Museum, out by the very edge of Station Road (under the telephone pole).

As to the names of the early settlers who are buried in the Old Cemetary behind the Museum: the large stone at the end of the foot path, down in the trees is inscribed with those names. When the wooden grave markers had deteriorated, the Historical Society put up the large stone marker as a "group" gravestone in the 1930's.

Subject: [maineswedishcolony] Names of original 51 settlers

With the upcoming 135th celebration in July this year, I am wondering if the
names of the original 51 Swedes are known. If so, where can I find the list? I
am also curious about the burial sites of the original settlers. Is it known how
many are buried in New Sweden Cemetery, or perhaps other local
cemeteries? Is there any listing in existence?
Thank you for any help with my questions.

Does anyone know if property in New Sweden is up for sale? I am thinking about purchasing some especially near the Madawasa River off of Rista road.  I recall the sharp bend and the dirt road leading down toward the river.
I am also working on a family tree.  My parental grandparents including my father was from New Sweden.  This is a huge tree I may need help with.  My great parents had a very large family,  I located Esplings, Plants, Johnsons, Snowman and I am doing the whole town now.HAHA
I hope to hear back from someone

Just wanted to say, "Hi"!  I have visited New Sweden a couple of times, and I live in Central Maine.  (Grandparents used to live in the St. George, Tenant's Harbor area.)  LOTS of Swedes came to visit them when I was little, and I have many fond memories of that.  (They are still both alive & well, and still have plenty of Swedish friends that visit!)
Andersons, Skoglunds, Olsens........
I am married, and have four kids---Nicholas, Jacob, Emma, & Kaysa.........
My 4 year-old daughter recently had her pics taken at JC Penney while holding on to a Swedish flag, with a Dada horse by her side.......made grampa VERY happy!
Take care,

Hello Everyone! I have been working on my mothers family line. My
mothers Swedish roots leads me to New Sweden in search of a family
that moved there in 1900. The family name is Stead. I have been in
touch with a few members of this family. But some of the information
on deceased relatives is not to be found.

So my question to this group is who might have the burial records of
your area? I have searched online on may sites with no historical
records for your area to be found. It is very disappointing. Many
websites for geneologist have volunteers for there community post
cemetary records, war records, marriages, etc...

Who would have access to records from 1900 on deaths? I am looking
for information on Anna Charlotta Stead born 4/11/1860 in Sweden and
her husband Teodor Frithiof Stedt born 8/6/1855 in Sweden. They died
sometime between 1900 and 1920.

Can anyone please help me with finding out when and where they were
buried?

Patti

Patti,

This is going to be a rather generic answer. By 1900, town and counties had
turned over the responsibility of issuing vital records to the states. You
can obtain VRs from either, but states tend to charge a lot more for VRs
($10-20) then towns. I believe New Sweden charges only $3 for each record.
They even have done some lookups for me for nothing. I do not remember the
address of either source but you can find both from this link:
http://www.vitalrec.com/

Remember that when dealing with death records, the death info is real but
the birth info may not be. Birth info is typically provided by an
"informant." Some member of the family who came to verify the death. They
are generally distraught and provide only that info that they BELIEVE is
true.

Hope that helped.

Peter

Hi Becky,
So what's your maiden name? Is Freda Zetterman married to Gordon? I remember the name John. There were 2 brothers who lived on Ringdahl Hill, well actually over that hill and across the road when I was growing up. They lived in a little house by themselves, I think. Would that be relatives of yours?
No, Adella is another strand of Johnsons.
Let me know what I can do to help you more. Are you coming to Midsummer June 24 and 25th this year? You'd probably meet a lot of relatives then. People tend to come back for that festival.

Hi---Hubby & I are very interested-----almost 2 years ago, I gave birth to Kaysa Elisabet Maj on June 26th, so that's why we couldn't come then.  (She turns 20 months old tomorrow.)
We also have a 4 year-old daughter, Emma, who has Autism, and we just need to make sure she is all settled before we go places.
My sons are 18 & 17......so one will be graduating from Lawrence High School in Fairfield this June.
I know that my grandparents, Edith (Berggren) Holmstrom & Erold Holmstrom, have been to the festival before.  They live half the year in Florida, and half here in Maine.
Take Care,

Does anyone know if property in New Sweden is up for sale? I am thinking about purchasing some especially near the Madawasa River off of Rista road.  I recall the sharp bend and the dirt road leading down toward the river.
I am also working on a family tree.  My parental grandparents including my father was from New Sweden.  This is a huge tree I may need help with.  My great parents had a very large family,  I located Esplings, Plants, Johnsons, Snowman and I am doing the whole town now.HAHA
I hope to hear back from someone

Your young square head

I am trying to locate someone who might remember a Swedish family living in
New Sweden, Aroostock, ME about 1920. Traditional genealogical avenues have
failed. I'm looking for someone old who might remember my family.

John Alfred Strid, Sr. 5) Oscar Henry Strid, 6) Herbert Axel Strid,
7) Otto William Strid, 8) Ernest Walter Strid, 9) Algot Theodore
Strid, 10) Albert Robert Strid.
The Wives of all the Strid man were.1) Nancy Zetterman married
August 4) Hazel Grondin married John 5) Hazel Soffie Anderson
married Oscar 8) Donalda Mary Marquis married Ernest 10) Isebelle
Duby Lagassey married Albert.

I pretty much have any family broken down currently. It contains 11
typed pages. Each one of the above families are placed in my family
tree. Above^ #5) Oscar Henry Strid had 2 girls and one boy. Names
are Marilyn Strid, Anita Strid and Howard Strid . My question to
the group is Maryilyn Strid married Snowman? Is this a nickname? I
do not have any other name. They never had kids.
Could any verify this information for me. My aunt Marilyn still
live on Rista Road. But their is no way to get in touch with her.

Can anyone please help me with finding out when and where they were
buried?

Patti

Hello Peter,
If you could tell me the name you're looking for, I may be able to help
you. There aren't too many old Swedes left. But I can try. Also where they
might have lived-a name of a road would help.

Please ask an old one with a memory if they can remember this family with a
sad history:

Lillian ANDERSON was born 11 Feb 1918 in Stockholm to John William ANDERSON
and Maria (Mary) Elizabeth MAGNUSON. Her older sister Helen was born in
1916. Their father John was born in Sweden in 1888. Their mother Maria/Mary
was born in New Sweden in 1893 to Swedish immigrants. Everything that
Lillian's living sons know about Lillian's childhood was told to them, but I
have confirmed some of it through census records. When Lillian was less than
12 months old, her mother died (I do not have an exact DOD despite trying -
it is conceivable that she died in childbirth). According to family lore,
John gave his own daughters away to a family who put them to work on their
farm and allegedly treated them like slaves. I was told that Lillian
eventually ran away, but I cannot confirm.

Here is what I know from census records:

In 1920, Lillian ANDERSON is just shy of two years old. and is living on a
farm in Stockholm with Edward and Christina ANDERSON, age 35 and 47,
respectively. Despite the ANDERSON surname, IF these people are related to
Helen and Lillian, it is not a close relation. Two year old Lillian is
listed in the census as a "boarder." Who takes in a 2 year old border? Also
living in the house are three of Christina's children from a previous
marriage, ages 21, 18, and 14, and one daughter with Edward, Lorna, about 5.

Strangely, Lillian's older sister Helen, now 3 and a half, is living in
Stockholm with her father, John William ANDERSON, and her mother's parents,
John and Mary MAGNUSON. In other words, after his wife Mary died, shortly
after the birth of Lillian, John seems to be paying another family to board
his 2 year old daughter Lillian but is raising her 3½ year old sister with
her maternal grandparents.

John ANDERSON disappears after 1920 giving some support to the claim that he
went back to Sweden without his young children.

In 1930, both Lillian ANDERSON and Helen ANDERSON are living with Christina
ANDERSON in Stockholm. Her husband Edward ANDERSON is not listed. Perhaps he
died. This time the census incorrectly lists Helen and Lillian as
Christina's daughters whereas their true mother was Mary MAGNUSON. There is
an additional contradiction within the census itself. It says Christina was
born in Sweden but that the birthplace of the mother of her two "daughters,"
Helen and Lillian, was Maine.

I do not know the relationship between Christine ANDERSON and Helen and
Lillian ANDERSON. Perhaps it was a formal adoption. perhaps it was something
else. How would I find out?

I have some evidence that by 1939, the sisters had left the farm and moved
to New Britain, CT. Lillian worked there as a housekeeper, then for a
catering company. Her sister died in New Britain of tuberculosis. Lillian
married about 1940 but ends up raising two sons alone in CT, working very
hard all of her life.

Peter, I've heard the story about this story about the Andersons in Stockholm before.  I'm not sure where I heard it from, but it may have been my grandmother.  She still lives in New Sweden.  I will talk with her and see if she's the one who told me that story.

Nikki,
I did post something similar a couple of years back, but I did not come right out and ask people to ask folks who might have heard the story back then. Thank you for asking your grandmother.
