Dear Helen,
Try this website:  www.scandinavius.com and click on the word "connections".  This should give you a list of names by the month.
  Good luck!

Subject: [maineswedishcolony] Swedish name days

I am looking for a list of the Swedish name days. Does anyone have such a
list that could be E-mailed to me, or can someone tell me where I can obtain
the list. I am hoping that I will be able to find one, so that I can
incorporate it in my family history. I will appreciate any help that anyone
can give me.

Just running a few random thoughts up the flagpole in the hope
that someone will salute ...
Is there any way I can get access to a list of the names of the
colony's settlers? My great-grandfather (John Benjamin Anderson,
English spelling; Swedish spelling unknown) came to Maine with the
settlers in 1870. Don't know if he ever made it to New Sweden; by
Oct. 1875 he was in Portland marrying my great-grandmother.
His son, my dad's uncle Bill, had a dairy farm in Falmouth
during the Depression. Every so often a bunch of folks he knew from
New Sweden would come down to visit. Some of these Swedes were
related, but I have no further information as to who or how they were
related. An aunt once told me that Uncle Bill introduced her to a
man named Andrew Swenson from New Sweden who was somehow related, no
further info. But Dad always said that the source of the name
Anderson was that the last one to change the name (Swedish style) was
Andrew Swenson ... probably Anders, not Andrew ... whose children
became Andersons. I suppose there's a slight chance that both
stories could be true, esp. if one of my great-grandfather's uncles
emigrated.
In doing genealogical research, my great-grandfather is as far
back as I can go up the Anderson line.
My great-grandfather is buried in South Portland. One Memorial
Day I was there to water the flowers. Across the lane from his stone
is the stone of an Andrew Anderson. His grandson happened to come to
the cemetery while I was there. We chatted briefly. I asked if he
knew whether the two were related. He said they weren't, but that
they knew each other. Both had come over from Sweden on the same
boat. I never got the grandson's name, and I didn't think to ask him
for any more information.
I notice in the phone listings there are a slew of Andersons in
New Sweden, but no Swensons. Come to think of it, the Andersons
wouldn't be related, unless great-grandfather had a brother or two
who came over with him.
Any thoughts, comments, info., etc., most welcome.
My heart goes out to all in town affected by the recent tragedy.

Hi Helen, I checked the site Dan Olson mentioned. All the info is
there. Just curious. What is this Name's Day thing all about?

I have a calendar of Name Days which I scanned onto my computer.  Unfortunately, this yahoo site won't accept two pages, so if I could get an address other than yahoo for anyone who wants a copy, I'll be happy to forward the pages to you...I don't know the history, but they are Swedish first names associated with each calendar day, observed in Sweden as we do birthdays here.  Markus is April 25, and so on...

From www.scandinavius.com: "Swedes like to celebrate. So with a Name Day
Calendar you can celebrate not only your "birth" day but your "name" day as
well! Extra coffee and cake for you on your name's day! Today there are so
many new names that a name's day calendar can't possibly list all the names.
The traditional names listed here reflect old Norse culture as well as
earlier influences of Christianity."
Generally, the name associated with each day comes from the sanctoral
calendar, the feast days of various biblical and extra-biblical historical
figures. For example, tomorrow you can celebrate the Feast Day of St. Eric,
King and Martyr, Patron Saint of Sweden, at the same time as you send me
presents for my name day. :)

From http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/home.html:
Erik, King of Sweden, Martyr
17 May 1160
Erik IX Jedvardsson was ruler of much of Sweden from 1150 to 1160. He was
the head of a Christian kingdom with nearby pagan kingdoms, all sharing an
old tradition of fighting. Around 1155, he headed an expedition into
Finland, then loosely under Swedish rule, to consolidate Swedish authority
there and to establish a protected Christian mission, headed by Henry of
Uppsala, now considered the founder of the Church in Finland (see 19 Jan).
Erik is also known for undertaking to provide Sweden with fair laws and fair
courts, and for measures designed to assist the poor and the infirm. As he
was in church on 18 May 1160, the day after Ascension Day, he was told that
a pagan Danish army was approaching to kill him. He replied, "Let us at
least finish the [mass]. The rest of the feast I shall keep elsewhere." As
he was leaving the church, the pagans rushed upon him and killed him.

Erik was honored both as an upholder of the Christian faith and as a
national hero, the ancestor of a long line of Swedish kings. Within thirty
years after his death his name appeared on the Swedish Calendar, and he is
accounted the principal patron of Sweden, as (for example) Patrick is of
Irelend. The silver casket with his remains still rests in the cathedral at
Uppsala [which I have visited several times].

Prayer (traditional language)

O God, who didst call thy servant Erik of Sweden to an earthly throne that
he might advance thy heavenly kingdom, and didst give him zeal for thy
Church and love for thy people: Mercifully grant that we who commemorate him
this day may be fruitful in good works, and attain to the glorious crown of
thy saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee
and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Prayer (contemporary language)
O God, who called your servant Erik of Sweden to an earthly throne that he
might advance your heavenly kingdom, and gave him zeal for your Church and
love for your people: Mercifully grant that we who commemorate him this day
may be fruitful in good works, and attain to the glorious crown of your
saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

I see in the database that her middle name is Viola, but that information is
not on the web page-- I don't why.

Name Martha Osell LaFlamme
Address 449 No. Main St., Apt. 224 Old Town, ME 04468
Phone 207-896-4344
Biographical Sketch          I was born in Conner Plantation in 1912. My
parents were Martin and Martha (Nelson) Osell. I had one older sister who
now lives in Santa Rosa, CA.
I spoke Swedish at home and learned to speak English at school. I went
to nursing school in Bangor after graduating from high school (2 years) in
Caribou.
I married Maurile LaFlamme from Old Town and we spent most of our
married lives in Connecticut where I was a nurse.
We had three boys and I now have three granddaughters and two great
granddaughters.
My grandfather Nelson had to learn English when he became a janitor at
the Stockholm School.

I am not sure if someone can lead me in the right direction, or help
me out. I am trying to finish up my grandfather's side of my family
tree. I am looking for info on Hjalmar Lund's wife... He was Born
1/28/1899, Death 12/29/1986 (lived in New Sweden between those
times).

I have NO info on her other than her name which is Mabel L. Lund
(maiden Erickson). I know she passed away at a young age in New
Sweden-and was also married to him there on 11/9/1921, and he
remarried Myrtle A. Lund (Ross) in New Sweden later on. I just need
some info to finish up.

I would normally not have a problem getting this info, but I am in
California.
I would appreciate any help or info.
Thanks!

Oh my, you are sooo wonderful. I would appreciate it more than you
know. We are really stuck as his first wife passed away, and I can't
get any further than her, and I can't get any further than him
either...there are no other older relatives left that can give me any
more information on them either. I figured the church would have some
records of them...
Again, thank you so, so much. I really appreciate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carl Lund (previously Karl Johan Andersson in Sweden, changed his

they are listed at the church. I have all other info other than that.
So I am down to info on Mabel L. Lund (Erickson) and John C. Lund.
Mable died at a very early age in New Sweden, and I am guessing the
info will be in town somewhere.
I found some other people looking for the same info as me, and I
could pass it on to them also.
Thanks again!

I just found this site, and this message while searching through the

Nelson. The only information I have on Frida is that she died
7/15/1947. They were married 5/15/12. The only specific info that I
have on Peter is that he was born in 1871 and died 11/4/1937. But I
do have most of Peter's family tree dating back to 1756 in Sweden.
If anyone is trying to find information about any Nelsons, I'll be

Dear Gary,
I am unaware of any restaurants in southern Maine-but if you are ever traveling outside Maine here are a few places that do have Scandinavian fare:

The Scandinavi-Inn in West Campton, NH

The EuroShip Store in Fairhaven, MA

Ulrika's on the upper east side of Manhatten (probably a lot further than you'd like to venture, I know, but the meatballs there are sooo good!)  www.ulrikas.com

Also in N.Y.C. is the restaurant Auquavit -quite high end but great.

If you are interested in ordering some Swedish food there are a few companies that have online catalogues.  One is out of Connecticut:  www.scandiafood.com

Another useful site for you if you are interested in Sweden is www.swedeninfo.com.  It is the Swedish Information Service from the Consul General of Sweden's Office in New York.  My husband used to work for the SIS.  They have tons of booklets and information for anyone who asks.  They may not have too much info on the Swedish community in Maine but you already know where to find that!

I hope this information is of use to you.

Happy New Year

The National Folk Organization, a US-based group of recreational folk
dance leaders, folk dance ensembles, and folk festival coordinators,
will be having their annual conference in Lowell MA, March 5, 6, and
7, 2004. Besides meetings and elections for members, the conference
will feature presentations and workshops with Glenn Bannerman, a
nationally recognized dance caller, teacher and leader. A former
Professor of Recreation and Outdoor education, Glenn teachers
Appalachian clogging and Big Circle Mountain dancing. For more on
Glenn, see www.bannermanfamily.com.

At last year's successful conference, it was decided to allocate some
of the profits to encourage our teen and college-aged members to
attend this upcoming conference. To that end, NFO is pleased to
announce that scholarship money is available to assist a limited
number of youth dancers. To apply, send an email with your name, age,
address, and school attending to NFO President Greg Lund at
lglund@.... Or send by mail to: Greg Lund, 15221 N. CR 400 E,
Eaton, IN 47338. Please include a letter of recommendation from your
folk dance leader along with your application and let us know what
you've done in folk dance, and what you plan to do in the future.
Special youth events will be arranged if there is enough interest.

NFO is also a sponsor of Pourparler, an annual get-together of folk
dance educators. Part of this year's conference will be a "Pourparler
Sampler", a chance for educators to share tried and true dances and
network with others in the field. Other activities include a visit to
international folk dancing in Arlington Friday night, and the annual
Awards banquet on Saturday.

Registration forms will be available shortly. For those that want to
attend only parts of the conference, an a la carte price list will
also be available. Check the website, www.nfo-usa.org, for more
information. Or contact jo.crawford@..., 978-692-6217, to be
sent information by mail.

The purpose of the NFO is to advance and preserve folk arts
representing national and local ethnic customs as they exist
throughout the United States; to promote and encourage the exchange
of folk dance and dance related folklore in the United States of
America and abroad, and to effectively network those who support
these objectives.

Hello,

I read about the trajedy that happened in New Sweden.  However, Readers' Digest did a great job at conveying what a wonderful community you all have.  I have looked over the websites, and this just confirms my suspisions that New Sweden would be a wonderful place to live.  I'd love to know a lot more from the people that live there.  That's why I signed up for the email discussion group.  I loved living in Linkoping, Sweden as an exchange student.  In fact I miss the traditions, food, and enviroment.  Thanks for quenching my "home sickness" with all the pictures placed on the websites.

Hello Jill.
Rev. Shelly Timber here, from the Covenant Church in New Sweden.  I'm a new-bee here after arriving 3+ years ago.  I adore it here.  You couldn't find a place with nicer people. Neighbors usually know each other and look out for one another.  I never found a trace of that "New England" standoff-ishness here.  Are you thinking of relocating?  You certainly wouldn't be the first!  Many have visited and ended up putting down roots.  Be sure to join us if you can for Midsommar in June.  While that will give you the best flavor of our Swedish heritage, I personally prefer the month of August.  Only because the blackflies are sure to be gone by then!!!  :-)  June is particularly bad with them.  Best wishes to you.

Hey, Jill.

We have lived in New Sweden for 25 years, having come from RI and CT.  We love our community.  The Swedish heritage and traditions add to the natural attractions which keep us here.  We raised two children on our small farm and love the rural location.  I am a Swedish descendent on both my mother's and father's sides,  and have visited the Swedish towns my grandparents came from many years ago.  New Sweden resembles their homeland in Sweden and explains why some of them settled here in 1873.  We hosted two exchange students in 1992 and 1993; one from Sweden and one from the Czech Republic through ASSE.  We enjoyed them both-I know they would like to return to visit New Sweden again someday.  They will always be part of our family.  Hope to see you at Midsommar!  Carolyn Hildebrand

This may sound strange, but according to my family lore, Swedish immigrant John William ANDERSON gave or sold his daughters Lillian and Helen ANDERSON to a farm owner when they were children and then returned to Sweden. I have been told that they were treated badly and used as child laborers for years until Lillian ran away to Connecticut. I am trying to confirm or disprove this story.

Here is what I know from doing genealogy (census, vital and church records): John ANDERSON immigrated from Sweden in 1910 when he was 22. I suspect that his parents had died in Sweden. He was living in Woodland in 1910, was baptized as an adult in New Sweden in 1917, and was living in Stockholm in 1920. In 1913, when he was 25, he married 20 year old Maria (Mary) Elizabeth MAGNUSON. She had been born in New Sweden to Swedish immigrants. I know of two children. Helen was born about 1916. Lillian was born 1918 in Stockholm, ME. Their mother Mary died before 1920, perhaps birthing Lillian. In 1920, rather than living with her father, Lillian (not yet age 2) was a "boarder" in the Stockholm household of Edward G. and Christina ANDERSON, according to the census. I am unaware of any blood relationship between the families. Strangely, Helen (age 4) was also living in Stockholm, but with her father John ANDERSON and her elderly maternal grandparents, John and Christina MAGNUSON. I do not know why Lillian's father kept Helen but sent Lillian across town. John ANDERSON seems to have disappeared after 1920, so perhaps the family lore is correct that he went back to Sweden without his children. In 1930, both Lillian (age 12) and Helen (age 13), now parentless, were both "boarders" in Christina ANDERSON's household (Edward had probably died).

Lillian eventually moved to CT (alone as far as I know), got married, and raised a family. I do not know what happened to Helen.

Have you heard of these families? Can you add anything to this story? Did such things happen in New Sweden? What generally happened to orphans in this area during the depression? Who would know about such stuff? What records, if any, might have been kept? Do you think Lillian and Helen were adopted, or was this wink and a nod kinda deal? Was the payment for "bordering" his children essentially the sale of his children as per family lore? Did John ANDERSON have a record? Any info would be appreciated.

Hi,
I am looking for information on Mark Sundstrom and his wife Mary.
They are listed in the 1880 census but i can find no more information.
They are listed with having a son Olof and a son Jonas. The ages and
names and ages match those listed in the cemetary with Martin
Sundstrom and Maria Bodin. Maria is the correct age to have been my
mother's grandmother that she visited as a child. Her grandmother did
not speak english and live near your park. My grandfather' real
mother was Emma Sundstrom and was married to aVermont stonecutterfrom
Vermont in Boston, just prior to his birth. He was given to her
sister Annie(Anna) who married a Fred N. Weeden, who was a potato
farmer in 1900. He moved to North Berwick, maine. My grandfather said
that his grandmother was one of the first to come over. The marriage
license list her name as Margeret Weeden. I have a start of the
Sweeden family tree but it is incomplete. My grandmother lost part of
it. Please email your response to merox@... or to the address
that I am typing on. This is my son's address. Thanks,
Roxanne Bumford
