Could we possibly get more information on this reunion posted here? The
exact dates and costs, etc? I plan on being in Scotland for a week or so
Spring 2001, maybe I could coincide my trip with this reuinion.

Evening friends,

My name is Kevin MacQuarrie, and I am a student (University) living
in
Surrey, B.C, Canada. I received the 'sign-up' email and new I had to
sign up immediately.

I've attended the last 2 of 3 B.C. Higlend Games, but I have yet to
see a fellow Clansman (or -woman). I guess this is mainly due to it
being a relatively small clan. Oh well...

My parents recently returned from a long overdue trip back to visit
family (mother's side) in Aberdeen. I'll see if I can scan some pics
and post them up on my site (will be awhile, computer upgrades are
required).

And as for the suggestion of a clan society, I say that if e-Commerce
is a legitimate business venture, then an e-Society should be
recognised as viable as well.

I'll be around,
Kevin 'soon to be a BSc (comp. sci.)' MacQuarrie

Bruce McQuarrie has organized another clan reunion to be held on Ulva
next April. When I talked to him a month or so ago he indicated that
there was room for about 130 people and that my wife and I were
numbers 204 and 205.

Little did I realize that there were that many MacQuarrie's in the
colonies.

Oh well, if not this one perhaps the next.

While I think about it, Bruce must have a substantial list of
MacQuarrie's that would be invaluable to this group searching for our
ancestors. Perhaps a telephone call or letter would be in order.

Does anyone know anything about or the source of the following:

A John McQueary (any spelling) was a prisoner after the Battle of Culloden.
Shipped to the American colonies in 1747. Sold to the Stout family in
Virginia for 7 years indenture. Was freed about 1753 and married daughter
Miranda Stout.

Hope this gets to the message list. I couldn't reach it.

There is at least one MacQuarrie Clan Association. Byrchill
MacQuarrie (byrchmacq@...) is the Treasurer of the
Atlantic Canada Branch of the Clan MacQuarrie Association.

When I joined a month or so ago Byrchill indicated that there was
very little genealogical information available but ........

There are two different membership fees available. For $5(C) you get
the basic membership. However for $15(C) (I think it is/was) you also
get a subscription to the Celtic Heritage magazine that is published
6 times a year in Halifax, NS that lists at $19.95. Seemed to me to
be a deal I couldn't refuse.

I also did have a name and address of a MacQuarrie clan association
in the USA that I got from Bruce McQuarrie. However, that letter
keeps getting mislaid and can't be found right now. I sent Byrchill a
note this morning to advise him of this group and asked him if he was
aware of any other clan associations. As of about an hour ago I had
not received any reply. When I do, or if Byrchill joins in, there
should be current information available.

Presumably you are talking about Ormaig? Nice idea, nae castle but we
have a village.

Ulva was sold by the last chief Lachlan, in 1777,
The present owners bought it from the Clark family, who were heavily
involved in the clearing the land. The Howard family purchased the
island after the 2WW, they are descendants of Lord Strathcona i.e.
Donald Smith, founder of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Take a look at these sites regarding Mull, Iona and Ulva, the list
regarding the genealogy is excellent. Helpful, friendly and
knowledgeable. Ian Phillips site is a fund of useful info, very well put
together.

We don't have a castle in working order but we do have a village on Ulva
with
many massive stone walls that could be put in working order with a thatched
roof should someone assume the responsibility. Ulva is owned by someone
else
today. The graveyard has many Macquarie headstones. Allen McQuarrie

My ties to the MacQuarrie clan also come from a McGuire, in this case my

I have been waiting for some sort of MacQuarrie group for a while,
and think this may be a good start. My husband is the regional chief
of his clan, Craig, in California and Nevada. We ahve been attending
the highland games with the Craig tent for over a year now.
I am a Macquarrie on my paternal grandmother's side, a McGuire. My
great uncle traced the family on that side back to a seaman from
Ireland in the late 1700's. With the name being spelled McGuie
instead of Maguire I have always felt it had scottish roots
eventhough we only traced the family back to Ireland. Afterall lots
of Scots moved to Ireland before coming to the new world.
Glad to be here.

By the way I have some information on the Siol Alpin, I can share

I invited between 50 and 75 souls, from posts I saw on the various discussion
boards, etc., relating to MacQuarrie. I still have many, many more emails to
send inviting people, though--that was all I could handle in one night. But
all of you are encouraged to spread the word and invite anyone that you think

Well seeing as we are making introdutions, i though I thought I might as well
say hello,
as Im sure youve guessed from an email address, Im not a MacQuarrie, the name
changed when we came over to Ireland (circa 1600), as to wether its an
Anglisisation or a Gaelisation I dont know. Anyway I know next to nothing about
the about the family before we came across the Irish sea.

I was kinda wondering how many people were invited onto this list, I saw there
were ten signed up on the egroups/onelist site, but I guess its early days yet.

Please post the information for the books--name, author, ISBN, publication
date, etc. If they are still in print, and you know of a source, that would
be appreciate as well. If not, my mother is a librarian and I'm sure could

I posted my message before I had read the others. I forgot to mention
that I have three books on the MacQuarries, from which I'd be happy

Look-ups

Gibson McKinnon had four sons and a daughter, Flora (born around
1830), who married Simon Fraser (born 1818 in Tain, Ross & Cromarty).
They lived in Ontario (Vaughan, King, Kleinburg, Halton[Nassagaweya],
Caledonia and finally Manitoulin Island (Gore Bay).

Their large family included my great-grandfather John McMurchy
Fraser.
Flora's brother Daniel operated the mill at Caledonia (Haldimand Co),
and was married to Margaret Thorburn.

Any of these names ring a bell with anyone?

How nice. ;-) I think I sent an invitation to Fran Lee, whose message you
forwarded, to join this group. Let's hope she gets on and shares some of her
travel experiences with us.

Any idea how to get the clan book she mentioned, or what the title is? I am
curator of the Scottish Tartans Museum in Franklin, NC, and through our gift
shop I have contact with a few Scottish book vendors, so if I get a title and
author, I may be able to order copies, assuming it is in print.

I will try and find some Highland Games in VA for you. I can tell you right
away that there are some very nice, if smallish, games in Williamsburg, the
weekend of Sept 23, that I usually try to go to (this year there are
scheduling conflicts, though).

Aye,
Matt

Good Morning Matt and thanks for the welcome!

I wasted countless opportunities to speak with my Grandfather, Harold
McQuarrie whom I mentioned in the e-mail, about our "line" of McQuarries.
He passed away several years ago and I am now realizing that we can miss a
lot from simply being too young to know what to ask. I will share whatever
information I can gather on other lands / homes / landmarks that must not be
overlooked by McQuarries as we travel back "home". It will be a powerful
trip - that's for certain! I have attached an e-mail I received recently
from a McQuarrie in Washington that recently visited Scotland and stayed at
the Gruline House (her e-mail follows yours below). I hope some of her
information is helpful to you.

The Highland Games! I've never attended, but have always wanted too.
Please forward any information on dates and locations or simply a website
address to check out.

Finally, if I can be of assistance to this effort, don't hesitate to let me
know!

How wild - I just talked to my vet yesterday and told him we were related
(McCrary is his middle name) and he was stunned til we started talking about
my trip. I just recommended the same contact for him and to buy the book
that I'm going to tell you about. All my advance information I received
from this retired professor who has written a clan book and (until he got
too old) led clan tours back to the Isles. Bummer - we missed that.

Bruce S. McQuarrie
10 Eames Drive
Auburn, MA 01501-1308

He is a personal friend of the current owners of the estate on Mull and
arranged for me to stay - they are a lovely retired English couple and
definitely not a regular bed and breakfast but they do it for the kicks for
the clan if they are about. They set a nominal fee and I wish I'd stayed
there the whole time and just rented a car to get there. I believe Bruce
needs to arrange your visit. Otherwise, the
letter I wrote to them after he arranged starts out:

Gruline House
Salen, Isle of Mull
Argyll, Scotland
United Kingdom PA71 6HS

Dear Mr. And Mrs. Harmer,

I am the person that Bruce McQuarrie called about several weeks ago that
would like to stay at your home on the nights of Sunday, July 6th, and
Monday, July 7th, leaving early on the 8th for the Oban train. I haven't
been able to study the schedules enough yet to see what times are involved
for leaving Mull, but I shall have to drop my car at Craignure in time to
make the ferry...
The Harmers' residence is a true castle - a big surprise, 8 bedrooms, not
well maintained because it's too much money to do so - a typical English
thing and no one feels badly about it. I felt very at home and their cat
crawled in my bed, making me really miss my mutts.

I got caught by counting on taking a certain ferry to make commitments in
England and finding out the ferry only had that run on Mondays to take the
kids to school on the mainland so I cut short my stay - a big mistake as you
get there but once and to really do the Isle of Ulva takes a good day of
hiking in boots, or two days to really sink in. They get you off the island
by 5 p.m.

There is NO WAY to get about the island without a car and it's one lane used
for both directions with sheep on a road so narrow your tires fall off the
side while you think you're doing fine (driving on the wrong side of the
car). It's a kick.

The thing I regret also was not going to the castle on Mull on (I believe)
the south end - it is well advertised but I needed another day for that,
too. Don't miss going to Staffa and Iona just off Mull - but pack very warm
clothes for the sea. When I was there it rained most of the time and I was
cold. It's often foggy. They had had several warm weeks but I missed it.

Ask my anything else as it comes to mind. Hope you can go soon.
I wish I knew when my grandfather came over from Scotland - my dad was born
in Thamesville, Ontario and the records burned so I don't know anything -
too young when the knowledgeable relatives died to have the sense to ask.

If you go to Edinburgh and can spend the time in their state archives, you
should have a better chance of tracing. I've tried to follow up on some of
the people in the MacQuarrie clan book but to no avail. However, I'm
guessing some of the people mentioned are directly in my line by the
frequency of similar names in our family and the timing.

Have a wonderful time.

Yikes - I just read your address and was in Charlottesville in early June.
Went to Quantico for my son's graduation from one of the academies and had a
wonderful 10 days touring. I love your country - it's so very beautiful.

If you get to Washington State, please let me know in advance. I'd love to
meet more MacQuarries. Also, my father had a brother or uncle named Duncan
that lived near Niagara Falls, Canada - any connection?

BrinkmanMDC:

Good Afternoon,

I hope this isn't too forward, but I saw your entry on the Clan MacQuarrie
website about your trip to Ulva and Mull. I also noted that you stayed at
the MacQuarrie estate. I am having difficulty locating the estate. Would
you be able to provide more information and how it was you came to stay
there. I am in the beginning stages of this long road to ancestral
knowledge and have a huge desire to visit Scotland. I am the daughter of
Duncan McQuarrie, Granddaughter of Harold McQuarrie who migrated to the US
(Michigan) in the 30's from Scotland. I don't know much beyond that yet.

Thank you in advance for any info you can provide.

Welcome, Leah! Congratulations, you have made the first posting to this new
group!

I, too, only recently found out I had MacQuarrie connections, though I have
been involved in the Scottish-American community for a number of years now.
I have traveled to Highland Games throughout the Southeast and never seen a
MacQuarrie booth. Not surprising, as there is no MacQuarrie society! So
this list is part of an attempt to get us MacQuarries together so that we can
help eachother answer questions like yours.

I'm planning a trip to Scotland in the spring of next year, so I would also
be interested in finding out what clan landmarks I should visit.

Right now there are only a handful of people who are subscribed to this list,
but I have invitations out for a good 50 more or so who may subscribe in the
next couple of days. You might want to repost your initial question when
there are more subscribers (although any new subscribers will be able to go
to the group site and read the archives at any time).

Glad to have you on board!
Aye,
Matt Newsome

Good Morning,

I was just "signed up" for this group. I am in the beginning stages of
researching my McQuarrie heritage (my grandfather, Harold McQuarrie was born
on the Isle of Mull and immigrated to the US). Is (are) there another
McQuarrie "castle" or homeplace besides the Gruline House, which appears to
have been the residence for only the later part of the family, Lachlan
Macquarrie? My husband and I are planning a visit to Scotland sometime in
2001 and we would like to visit all such places.

Thanks in advance!
