While simplicity is a virtue you will find that even complex screens
are pretty easy to get used to. Kind of like an instrument panel on
a modern aircraft. Your eye and experience will allow you to rapidly
focus on the control you need on a crowded panel. If you logically
group and place the controls it makes it even faster. I got used to
MACH1 with everything on the main screen and Art came out with the
mutiple screen MACH2....I HATED it for a while. I ran from the
diagnostics screen for a long time until I could find time to design
my own. I ended up building a screen that had 100% of everything I
use and I never switch around. Some controls I very seldom use but
my brain (the part that allows me to hear the TV audio while my wife
is talking loudly to her sister in the same room) lets me filter them
out and focus on the controls I need.

After a basic training period with a simple screen you might want to
try a more complex version. Ignore the howls of protest for a few
days and see if the operator gets acclimated to the new interface.

Tom,

I do all of my PC shopping at eBay, a dime is a dollar almost any
given day. I've purchased all of my computer related components
through eBay.

I have been setting up my screen for my father who has little
experince with CNC.
Trying to train him as my cnc operator only right now.

For this purpose I think less info the better.
I would like to see diag screen and other non job related screens
become menu items rather than buttons and or pages.

His mill does not have spindel on off or rpm checking, nor limit
switches. So I left those items out of my design I recently
uploaded. Some day we will hook that stuff up,And I can add that
stuff back in.

His mill is a simple desktop 4th axis machine with no bells and
whistles.

Uploaded a screen in file section that I have been working on.

Work in progress...Comments welcome.

Have been focusing on mainscreen mostly will.
Thanks to other users that shared some of there bitmaps to the group.
I used them for now.

NOTE:...
I used a black background and orange text in the g-code screen.
Just like most big machines have. I liked it.
My father on the other hand found it hard to read. So changed it to
gray background and black text. So use younger guys need to take in
consideration of the older eye balls out there when designing

Any ideas on where I can buy a PCI parallel port card, inexpensively
($10 - 20)that is guaranteed to work with both Windows XP and
Win2000. Most of the PCI cards are around $30 plus shipping when
bought new and the cards on ebay have no guarantee that they will
work on 2000/XP. I bought a dual parallel PCI card on ebay and it
only has drivers for win/95/98/ME and the manufacturer says they
aren't going to have drivers for it for 2000/xp. Any information

Re-install XP, then download all the updates, install Mach2, if it
doesn't work - send it back - it's one of the few incompatible
systems.(along with dual processor machines ;)

Well, I tried manual installs (new hardware device) with both drivers after
stripping out the old and rebooting each time.

First attempt with the stock driver I went straight to Mach2 and got some
results, more or less. Pulse count was 173584 (?) but the axis would move
smoothly if I reduced the jog speed to 1%. So I rebooted and the pulse count
was all over the map from 1700 to 24K, drive very choppy and rough.

I remove the driver, remove Mach2, edit Mach2 out the registry, run regclean
and reinstall from scratch.

This time I run OCXDriver test and the system hangs as soon as the watchdog2
indicator lights. Reboot, same results.

Strip out the system again and install without initialising. Manually install
stock driver, same results in driver test or Mach2 reset.

I repeat again with No-apic driver and I get 0 pulse count in OCXDriver test,
but, at least the system doesn't hang ;)

This is a VIA KM266 chipset, Epp/Ecp capable parallel port.

I've checked the port address and it's 0378 per the default, I have nothing
running at startup, no quicktime monitor, no firewall, no nuthin'

I'm inclined to try buying a dual port card and see what happens.

Does anyone have any suggestions before I put this puppy back in the box?

Hi

Art left us with some holiday homework - i.e. to look at the
information to put on each screen to make setting up and running a
job on Mach2Mill flow smoothly.

The manual describes the controls in groups related to a given
function. For ecxample the Feedrate Group has the feedrate DRO
itself, the override DRO and its increment/decrement/reset buttons,
the feed mode toggle etc. While these are not all needed all the
time it is probably easiest for the user to see them all (subject of
course to space considerations!)

I have tried playing with some workflows and wanted to simulate the
screens - it is very hard work using Screen Designer. I have tried
using Photoshop and Corel Photopaint for mockups using the
screenshots of the groups from the manual. This seemed to work quite
well (although the shape of the groups is not always ideal)

I have posted the screenshots in a folder in the Files section, in
case anyone else wants to try working like this.

Best wishes

I just received a refurbished E-machines Win-XP machine to run Mach2,

It's a 1.6 Ghz Anthion and when I run the OCX Driver test I get
nothing or hash. I've stripped out every process and application
possible, cleared the registry of any reference to Mach2 and figure
it's time to try the Mach2 special driver for non-apic boards.

Do I simply replace the Mach2.sys file (in Win/system32) or do I go to
add hardware and "update" the driver and point to the new one?

Hi all! I am new to the CNC world. I'm trained in electronics and
find no end of ideas in this enviroment. Might have "stupid"
questions sometimes, know a lot now but I look at it from a technical
point of view rather than a CNC user. Trying to get the hang of G
code, M code, Macros look like a greatly useful thing, still adapting.

I appreciate all the help I can get, no specific question now, just
wanted to come in and chat. Lied, I was just thinking, I could not
seem to get a list of all G codes on the Web to memorize, try and
learn it, yes free. Anyone know a site that someone like me can
learn it, CNC tutorial or something.

Playing with Mach2 at this time, thanks so much to 'Art', he's been
answering questions for me for a while now and he's very patient,
great software package. I can't seem to get enough of the Screen
designer, very friendly....and addictive.

Did I read that Mach2 RC7 is not putting out a PWM signal. I asked
to have buttons installed to INCrease and DECrease spindle speed, got
it, thanks a lot, but I haven't actually got to the actual signal on
this version, it was working on the last version.

Thanks lots.

RC7.2 is online. It only address the spindle speed problem , seems to work
here fine, and a DXF problem. DXF was putting out 6 decimal places. Mach2
does not like more than 4. It can drop some kinds of circles when more than
4 decimals are used.

The lathe display is updated, but not yet ready, so it may act weird for
you.

I have a long list of things to check and change when I get back. Thanks to
Olivier for suggesting the EStop LED be placed next to the EStop
button..Good idea. Workflow screens will hopefully start soon, so if you
have opinions as to workflow on particular screens, jot them down. How about
a list of controls you'd like to have on each screen. I mean the ones there
now, but which control on which screen and what should the screens be named?
Its time to create a balanced screen set for Release 1.0 (Finally...), then
I'll do 800x600 as well.

Well, with that my work here is done. I will return in a week and a bit. If
you see a dazed looking programmer winging down the road at you on a chromed
out jap-crap 1100, duck!

Thanks,
Art

What type of machining are you doing? if as your alias suggests you
are mainly into woodwork you might ask the other members if their CAM
systems cater for contour cutters to be fed into the edge of the
stock. I can't speak for the other programmes but the main(only)
strategy in VM is for the tool to be fed downward into the material.
When I queried MecSoft about this their reply said ".... Since we do
not support these type of cutters, you cannot simulate the toolpath.
So, you have to be little bit more careful, since you cannot verify
the toolpath."

For my own interest I would also like to know if any of the other CAM
programmes support these type of cutters.

I own Both Dolphin Partmaster and Visualmill. They are both very
nice programs and I highly recommend them both. Dolphin Partmaster
will probably do everything you would need and then some. Tru 3D
needs would be met by Visualmill. Bill Griffith at Grifftek is the
US Distruibter for Dolphin products. Bob Campbell is who I bought
Visualmill from and I like doing business with him myself. I know
that Andrew Werby is also a dealer for Visualmill and have also heard
very nice things about him. I don't use it myself but I know alot of
members here also use and like Vector. Fred at IM serve is a very
involved vendor and his support is legendary in these groups.

I downloaded Rams Gold Demo and it keeps crashing my system so I have
not been able to evaluate it.

Bobcad is not very well regarded in the groups I belong to.

Hope this gets your started.

I would suggest you also consider TurboCADCAM. The 3D CAD is outstanding in
ease of use and functionality. One of the best features is the wide range
of file reads. It can read in from just about any other source. The CAM is
only 2.5D but it works very well.

TurboCADCAM is the first system I have used that does CAM in a parametric
manner. If you make changes to your drawing, the CAM functions will respond
intelligently, rebuilding all the Gcode to match your changes in the
drawing.

appears as though RC7 is not capturing the parallel port/s. The

Please all keep in mind that this forum might go away if Art is not
intrested in the move.

The reason for this new group is to move the Mach1-Mach2 issues here
so we can perserve the older messages on the Master5 group.

I don't expect we will get all the messages to move here imediately
but hopefull we can perserve whats left of the older messages that
might help someone.

Will wait to hear what Art thinks before we really push things over
here.

Art will still be the Head guy here and he will have the last work.
