Hi Sue,
It is always good to hear from someone interested in cross-country skiing.
There are two clubs that operate in your area - Lakeland and the Tyneside Loipers. We all tend to know each other and share events so you should hopefully be able to find something reasonably close to you.
Have you ever skied before, either cross-country or downhill? Also, what kind of skiing are you interested in? There are probably three main types of skiers in the club. There are the telemarkers who will use downhill slopes like the alpine skiers but a special free-heel type of ski and boot. There are tourers who love to head into the untracked wilds (either in the UK or Norway/the Alps) or there are track skiers who use pre-prepared trails in the meadows and woods. In practice most combine various types depending on weather and access to snow.
We tend to have three main types of events - there are roller-ski events where we do not need snow and ski on tarmac instead. We have on-snow meets where we go out for a tour and we also have telemark/downhill courses on either dry-ski slopes (Kendal usually) or at the snow slopes in Manchester or Castleford. There are also social events.
We have a supply of club kit for both touring and track skiing and loads of roller ski gear so that is easy to get you started on. We don't have much downhill gear but we have access to gear elsewhere if that is the side you are most interested in.
I have attached a copy of our latest newsletter so you can see more of what we get up to. If you are still interested, either drop me another e-mail or give us a call if that is easier.
