Beloved != profitable

My suspicion is that the cost versus return on making it widescreen
isn't as good as making it standard size. I'd wager that the series
is still just enough of a cultural icon to continue the yearly specials.

GvR and the Conan cross-over seem to be attempts to try to boost that,
but I suspect that once a one or two more of the original cast leave,
they might finally put the series to rest and ride the re-runs.

And what a sad day that will be...

I notice that too, though I too don't know why the recent Lupin TV movies aren't presented in 1.78:1 like a majority of other anime today. I've seen some anime...

There's a 720p 16:9 version of Lupin vs Detective Conan so maybe things are changing....

Nah, even if the cast is replaced, as long as the stuff makes money, they'll keep it going. After all, they continued Fist of the North Star without Akira...
