Phil,
Drive into downtown Leesburg and go north on King Street from Route 7
(i.e., the main intersection in the historic section). Go 2 blocks
and turn left onto North Street. After 2 blocks this road veer
right and turns into Old Waterford Dr. Rust Library will be down on
the right, just past the cemetery.
Howdy good people of the Loudoun Road Runners! Just wanted to pass along
word of a few upcoming races in and around Loudoun County in the month of
September...
STUPID LITTLE 10 MILER & 5K
Saturday 8 September 2001, 8:00 AM
off of Route 7 a few miles west of the Loudoun Co. border
http://www.svrunners.org/stupid/
This is a very low-key pair of races being held this Saturday
at Watermelon Park in Clarke County, just over the Loudoun
County border. Both courses are certified, there'll be water
stops during the 10 miler, there'll be really cheap awards,
and the 19th overall finishers in the 10 miler & 5K get prize
money, believe it or not! And hey, it only costs $6 for the
10 miler or $4 for the 5K (members of the Shenandoah Valley
Runners get a $1 discount). It might be a good warm-up for
the LAWS Half-Marathon the following weekend. For more info,
visit the race's Web site (see address above), or e-mail me
at <kbrown@...>, or call me at (540) 635-7539.
BLUEMONT FAIR 10K
Saturday 15 September 2001, 8:00 AM
Bluemont, VA, off of Route 7 in western Loudoun County
http://www.svrunners.org/bluemont/
This hilly but scenic 10K, held in the village of Bluemont,
is entering its 23rd year, and it's a fine race. Alas, it's
being held the day before the LAWS races, but what can ya
do. I know there will be at least a few idiots (like me)
who will run both races. :) The Bluemont Fair 10K will cost
you $18 on race day, but there'll be nice t-shirts for the
first 200 registrants (last year's race had 114 finishers),
and there will be pottery-type prizes, too. Check out the
race's Web page for more info, directions, and course maps,
or call Raylene Scott at (703) 771-0070.
SVR RRCA WOMEN'S DISTANCE FESTIVAL 5K
Saturday 29 September 2001, 9:00 AM
Millwood, VA (off Rts. 50/17 about 7 miles from Ashby Gap)
http://www.svrunners.org/wdf/
This one's for women only! It's being held at the Historic
Long Branch estate in Clarke County, Virginia, which is about
7 miles from the corner of Clarke, Loudoun, and Fauquier
Counties, or about 20 miles west of Middleburg. Race-day
entry fees are $15 with a tank-top or $11 without one, and
there'll be overall & age group awards, random prizes, etc.
The course is certified and kinda rolling, but it's really
pretty out there at Long Branch. Check the race's Web page
for more info, or contact Jen Peachey at <jlp4y@...>
or (540) 837-1758 ext. 21!
And of course don't forget about the LAWS Run for the Shelter Half-Marathon
& 5K on Sunday 16 September 2001 in Leesburg! It goes without saying that
you should head on over to <http://www.loudounroadrunners.org/laws2001/> for
more details. There's also the Sterling Fest 5K on Saturday 6 October in
Sterling (although the entry fees are unusually high and the age groups are
rather large)-- see
<http://communities.microneil.com/sterling-va/foundation/5K.htm> for info.
Sorry to be taking up your time with crass race promotion, but I figured
that some Loudoun Road Runners members might be interested in information
about these nearby races. :) See ya out on the roads!
Sincerely,
Karsten Brown

Hi gang,
I believe that we scheduled a board meeting at my place for Wednesday
evening. If you care to bring some drinks and a little something to munch
on (I can provide chips and salsa I think) then we should be fine for a few
hours. Let me know if you can make it for 7:30 or so. If we can't get a
quorum I will reschedule.
Thanks

Am I to imply that you are thinking of running a marathon in a few weeks?
I sure haven't seen you on the roads much. Aren't you worried about
injury
or worse?

Anyone heading up to the JFK tomorrow morning? I'd dearly love a ride to the start, my wife will be picking me up in Harper's Ferry at the 16ish mile mark. I'm in Purcellville.
Richmond was a fun marathon. The race was well organized and well-supported
with plenty of aid stations and lots of spectators. The first half of the
course is definitely the more scenic part of the run; running through nice
neighborhoods and a great stretch along the river. I have to agree with
what Chuck said about the second half of the course. It definitely left
something to be desired in terms of scenery. There was only one hill that
stood out in my mind and it was around the 17 mile mark...maybe that was
where I was just getting tired? Anyway, it was a fast, fun course. I would
recommend it over Marine Corps (although you should do Marine Corps sometime
just to do your home town marathon) because it is a fast course, a nice size
field, and good race organization.

I ran the course a couple of years ago and really liked
it. Pretty, flat. One section around 20m gets into a seedy
section of town, but you're in a pack with a lot of runners in the early
AM...so, no problem. Two bridges to cross (that I remember) with
great views.

I think both of these are great ideas. I would definately participate.
Franklin Park is a great park--A regular series of races might be just the
thing for the club and I especially like the idea of a swim after a short
race in the warmer months.

Folks:
I've done some research on some cross country running options at Franklin
Park, which is just a mile or so west of Purcellville, talking to park staff
about possibly doing periodic training runs and / or races there. For those
of you who haven't been, the park is a fairly large (208 acres) mostly open
undulating space with about a 120' elevation difference between the highest
and lowest spots. There's a public pool, gazebos, playgrounds and
pavillions, a barn for the performing arts, five or six base/softball fields
and four football/soccer fields. Loudoun Valley HS holds its cross country
meets there and has a 5k perimeter course already laid out. I'm going to
contact the school (my daughter goes there) and get the details of that
course.
In addition, there's a beginners and advanced orienteering course which would
make a phenominal fartlek workout; the distances between the various points
are rather precisely well known. The course basically consists of a series
of random vectors between well marked white polyethylene poles (about 4' high
and about 4" around) which have been fixed permanently to the ground. Again,
I'll look into this a bit more.
What I'm thinking of is one or more of the following:
1) Getting the park to be a new run start locale. Tranquility Road abuts the
property and would provide a rather nice 2-3 mile additional residential road
loop nearby.
2) Holding monthly races at the site as a 'series' event. 5k or 10k cross
country with a warm up/warm down social run afterwards. During the season,
perhaps a picnic and/or dip in the pool after the run. I think this could be
a good draw for increasing membership as the park is very well trafficed
during the warmer months. I'd like to see the 'series' of races perhaps
offer token prizes for significant improvement or be prediction based (that
way Sean doesn't win everything all the time).
Also note that Loudoun Co and Purcellville have the first half of the funding
in place to extend the W & OD trail from its present terminus at the Pville
Train Station to Round Hill via Franklin Park. Being as the park is about 1
mile from the station and the station is 10 miles from County HS in Leesburg,
and there's a 3+ mile loop around the park, [11.5 * 2] + 3.1875 sounds like a
Marathon to me... Perhaps a project for the future?

Thanks for the advice. I think Coleman fuel would have worked with my
stove. White gas is the preferred fuel for little backpacking stoves
because it is a clean-burning fuel. There are a few other minor advantages,
but that is the main one. Luckily this weekend, we ended up having plenty
of stoves to use.
Next time you should join us!
Sean
Is Coleman fuel as good as white gas?
I get mine at Wall Mart.

If anyone is coming through Fairfax on their way home and could stop at
Hudson Trail Outfitters, I need some white gas for my camping stove. We are
going up to Shenandoah Natnl Park this weekend at I am out of fuel. Another
option would be REI, but that is hard to get to. Both of those places have
white gas. Another possibility is L.L. Bean in Tysons Corner, although I
haven't contacted them to verify that they indeed have white gas (but they
are such a major outdoor store that they must carry it).
Please let me know if you can help me with this.

19th makes sense, now that I look at it.

Steve,
My run schedule has November 19 (newsletter), not 29. Where did you get the
29th from?

Inputting the schedule for the next few months into my palm pilot, I ran
into
this towards the end of November:
29 SUN 8a 4, 7, 10 Cool Spring Elementary Johnson
25 SAT 8a 4, 6 Faith Chapel ....
Well, the 29th isn't a sunday and it's out of order. The 29th *is* a wed
before thanksgiving, but I'm still wondering which bits of information about
this run are or aren't true. Anyone know?

I just posted the Fall 2000 President's Message to our website and will
post the 4Q running schedule as soon as I receive it. If anyone has any
content they would like to see posted on our website, i.e., stories,
pictures, running advice, announcements, NOW would be a good time to send
it to me. I'll make another round of changes once I receive the schedule.
All my best,

The car wash that was to be sponsored by the LCHS Cross Country Team has
been postponed to next Saturday, the 30th of September, due to anticipated
rain this weekend. It will be held at the same time and place and include a
bake sale. Refer to previous email for details. Thanks.....Tom
Folks:
Looking for one or more runners to do weekday workouts. Times and places
which may work for me:
Mornings (6 or 7 am) in Purcellville (pre work commute)
Mornings (8amish) in Ashburn/Sterling (post work commute)
Midday, Sterling/Asbburn area (near Waxpool Walmart)
Evenings in Sterling/Ashburn/Leesburg/Purcellville corridor
Looking for one or more people to do 3-5 miles, perhaps occasionally a bit
longer, initially 1-2x per week but increasing as I get back into better
shape. I'm thinking something like:
Tu: 3mi, AM before work (slow!)
Th: 5mi, hillier, at lunch or after work
Routes, pace and time of day negotiable, although I typically tend towards
the 7:45-8:15ish pace range.

For those of you who are checking this every now and then, don't
forget about the Heritage Day 5k in Purcellville. Help is
appreciated, but also consider running to help beef up numbers. Call
Mary Kay Williams for details.
Also track starts next Thursday (25th May) at LCHS with Ned Barrett
as the volunteer coach.
I am also accumulating people to band together for Marathon training
this summer in preparation for the various fall marathons they are
aiming for. Let me know if you want to be a part of this.
Cheers for now
