Lets see, have you read the help files ?

Have you read the wiki ?

Have you searched for older forum posts ?

Do you not care to try and use flrig ?

Open a terminal ::

sudo adduser (your user name) dialout.

Actually, me too, on my IC-703.

FLRig, latest, compiled with the defaults (to /usr/local, no CPU optimizations) lights up my Rigblaster Pro (all lights come on!) and the radio goes into transmit. If I ctrl-C out, everything on the Rigblaster goes back to normal, the rig comes out of transmit but I have to reset the radio before I can connect via FLDIGI.

FLDIGI, on the other hand, works well enough, though it does warn me that there is no PTT code- so I am VOX only. That's not been a problem in any way. Fldigi tracks the radio (and sets frequency) as expected.

West Mountain Radio interfaces need to use a cp210x driver that is specific to your kernel version

$ uname -r

will tell your kernel version number.

Visit the West Mountain Radio site.  I recently assisted Sholto with a driver update.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the suggestions on how to fix the rig control problem I was having.
The suggestion to add me to dialout did the trick. The correct syntax was
"adduser user name dialout". That allowed FLDIGI to communicate with the radio
and the radio to communicate with FLDIGI. I did need to play with some of the
timing adjustments but it now works just as it does in Windows 7.

Thanks again to everyone who helped. I am a rank beginner with Linux and need
all the help I can get!

I've never operated DominoEX but I'm wanting to try.

In the manual it says "The text displayed in the status area is the secondary
text being sent by the transmitting station. When the keyboard buffer is empty
the DominoEX modem transmits text from the secondary text buffer. Your
secondary text buffer can be edited on the DominoEX configuration tab."

Can't for the life of me find the DominoEX configuration tab. I've looked
through everything on the configuration drop down menu and perhaps I missed it,
or is it found somewhere else?

And I'm curious why this feature is there in the first place. Could it be a
"place holder" to show the channel is occupied? I can see where commercial
stations might want this but what good is it for hams?

Many thanks,

Most people stick their callsign in there so that their call is always transmitted.

On 3.21.49 click Configure on the menu, then click Modems then click the Dom tab.  On 3.21.33 the tab was called DomEX.

It appears that if this is empty it defaults to the callsign set on the

Regarding the latest version of flmsg (1.1.22),

If I compose a message with the "radiogram" format, there seems to be no way to
get a "plain text" version of the message that includes the field headers like
"origin", "number", and so on. This is a little confusing because we are using
flmsg to compose messages that will be sent as plain text, and the receiving
station doesn't use flmsg, so they rely on the field descriptions in the text
message to understand what we are sending them. Checking and unchecking the
"standard format" box appears to do nothing other than change the "format"
header to a Y or F.

Is there a way to get a plain text message, composed with the radiogram form,
that shows the field names?

I just posted a new HOWTO on the fldigi Wiki.  It details the installation of the OS, the development tools, and building all of the fldigi family of programs on the current Mint-13-mate distribution.

https://fedorahosted.org/fldigi/wiki/Documentation/HOWTO/Mint_installation

Several new Mint users have had difficulty with building from source.  I tested these instructions on a clean Virtual Box installation of Mint-13-mate.

Would someone like to create a similar HOWTO for
  • Fedora
  • Mandrake
  • SuSE
I am not familiar with the Red Hat way of managing repositories, etc.

Shout if you have any question about creating a new page.  If you are going to create a HOWTO for a distro:

visit https://fedorahosted.org/fldigi/wiki/Documentation/HOWTO/Lubuntu_installation

and save the page as text (bottom of page)

Then visit and print https://fedorahosted.org/fldigi/wiki/WikiFormatting

for general info on formatting a Wiki page.

Edit the save'd HOWTO page (off line using a text editor ... not NotePad please) to create your new HOWTO

then visit the fldigi-Wiki-sandbox  https://fedorahosted.org/fldigi/wiki/SandBox

select the "Create this page" button and then copy and insert your new HOWTO page into the edit box.  You can review the page, submit it, and then rename it.  For the HOWTO the name should be

Documentation/HOWTO/<new HOWTO page name>

Then goto this page https://fedorahosted.org/fldigi/wiki/Documentation/HOWTO

select "Edit this page"  to add the link to your new HOWTO.  Adding the link should be obvious after you've studied the existing page.

That's about it folks.

Hi.

Sorry, but no I didn't try Puppy, or Fluppy, though I have used Pup' before on
older machines. I still have an older laptop somewhere with it loaded, but it's
barely got the grunt to run Fldigi and PSK31, let alone anything else. When it
had W98 on it, it used to run Digipan a treat, but I wanted other modes.

At present, I have Fldigi/Flrig working well on this little Acer One, that now
runs Lubuntu, that I'm actually using do to this via the web (because I can't be
bothered to go get my portable hard drive with the email on!)

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Dave,

When you get tired of that cramped keyboard try using a USB
Keyboard/Mouse combo. And plug in an external monitor. It will make
that netbook think it's one of the big dogs. My big fat fingers do
better on the external keyboard when I'm testing things on the Lenovo
S10 netbook. I've even taken it to church and plugged it in to the
projection system. Linux on a 12 x 16 foot screen ... that's a hoot.

Hi All,
.
After playing with SUSE Linux and a pre-packaged set of fl- programs,
I decided it was time to try Linux Mint 13 , and of course, to try
installing fldigi and flrig for starters.
.
As you might expect, I ran into a number of problems, for it turns
out that with Linux Mint, you need more than the typical dependencies.
I will try and go through my list and explain what I found out.

First of all, you need to know about
apt-cache search <filename>
which will help you find programs that may have different names
than you might expect, and also for alternate versions and so
forth.
.
You simply type in that sequence plus a filename and get back a
good deal of info.
.
You use "apt-get install" <filename> so as to install most of the
programs.  For a number of the programs, for instance, fltk,
portaudio, hamlib, and samplerate, you can go to the web to find
the latest versions and compile them separately.  Some of them
even have nightly updates!
.
I only mention this because SUSE Linux uses "zypper" as their
equivalent command.
.
Here is my list:
apt-get install autoconf
apt-get install automake
apt-get install gettext gettext-base
apt-get install libportaudio2 libportaudiocpp0
apt-get install libhamlib-dev
        installs libhamlib2, libusb-dev, libhamlib++-dev
apt get install libhamlib-utils
apt-get install grig
        interesting on screen controller program.
apt-get install libasound2-plugins
apt-get install libsamplerate0
apt-get install libsamplerate0-dev
apt-get install libpng12-0
apt-get install libpng12-dev
apt-get install pkg-config
apt-get install libx11-dev
These last four are necessary in Linux Mint
before fltk and fldigi will make it through
                the ./configure command's tests.
apt-get install fltk1.1
apt-get install fltk1.1-dev

Upon doing apt-get install fltk1.1, I got the following:
"
Note, selecting 'fltk1.1-games' for regex 'fltk1.1'
Note, selecting 'fltk1.1-doc' for regex 'fltk1.1'
Note, selecting 'libfltk1.1-dbg' for regex 'fltk1.1'
Note, selecting 'libfltk1.1-dev' for regex 'fltk1.1'
Note, selecting 'libfltk1.1' for regex 'fltk1.1'
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libdrm-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libkms1 libxext-dev
  mesa-common-dev x11proto-xext-dev
Suggested packages:
  fluid libglu1-mesa-dev libglu-dev libjpeg-dev libxft-dev libxinerama-dev
"
.
And after installing those as below, I did those immediately above, as well.
.
"
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  fltk1.1-doc fltk1.1-games libdrm-dev libfltk1.1
  libfltk1.1-dbg libfltk1.1-dev
  libgl1-mesa-dev libkms1 libxext-dev
  mesa-common-dev x11proto-xext-dev
"
.
At this point, I did a ./configure, a make, and a make install command
for both fldigi and flrig.  They both ran without issue or error.
They came up when I clicked on their shortcuts.
The "font" of fldigi's main screen was kind of "thin" but it is usable.
.
The waterfall worked on fldigi after selecting the built-in sound card on
my laptop.  So far, I have not tried either program with a rig and I have
not set up any usergroups therewith.
.
So, this point I would welcome any comments or criticisms.

Some hints:

You can also use "apt-cache search --names-only BLAHFASEL". This will only search in the package name, not in the package descriptions as well.

You don't need to install everything by itself, e.g. this ...

apt-get install libsamplerate0
apt-get install libsamplerate0-dev

... isn't necessary. Just entering the second is enought, because all -dev packages (needed for people that like to compile stuff by themselves) also loads the normal library.

Also, apt-get ist a bit slow to start, so you can make loooooooong apt-get line with all of the above. But actually "apt-get install fldigi fldigi-dev" should load all stuff that is needed. Didn't you try that?  If you got problems, you should post a bug report onto either Mint, or Ubuntu (mint's base distribution) or Debian (Ubuntu's base distribution, which I happen to use).

Another trick that I sometimes us is "apt-get build-deb fldigi". This should always work, because the package-autobuilders of the distributions also use that.

Compiled Fldigi, Flrig, Fllog, Flmsg, Flwrap on Ubuntu 12.04 with no problems
following the instructions given in this forum. I'm using the Mate' interface
because I like the old fashioned and, I think, simpler and more intuitive look.
It was necessary to add my user id to the dialout group to gain access to the
serial port. I'm using a USB CT-17 interface for cat control and a Creative
Audigy SE soundcard for audio interface. The rig interface is an MFJ 1278. I
use a serial port for PTT control for safety's sake. The rigs to be used
include an Icom 756 Pro and an Icom 706Mk2g.

One glitch I've found in Flrig is if you use cat control for PTT and
inadvertently close flrig while the transmitter is keyed, it STAYS keyed.
Restarting flrig reconnects to the rig OK but does not reset PTT. It still
stays in PTT until you cycle the PTT control ... hence the use of hardware
control for PTT.

Suggestion: include in the start-up and shutdown routines for connecting to and
disconnecting to the rig a signal to drop PTT. I looked at the code but my
programming skills are extremely rusty and I couldn't figure out how to do it in
the rig definition code. I probably missed something. Still, it would be good
to drop the rig out of transmit when connecting and disconnecting. If you have
to restart the PC because of a hang up, re-starting fldigi will reset the rig.

I have posted Ben's RigCAT XML file for the IC-9100.

Dear David,
I've created a RigCAT XML file for the ICOM IC-9100. Please find the
attached file.

I'm the only one who has tested it, i don't know a IC-9100 user around,
but i think there are others who would like to use this. Maybe you can
put this on your XML files site?

Best regards,

Recently I noticed that when I compile any of the
flxxx programs, the resulting font is less than
desirable. However, if I instead use the binary
version, the font looks O.K. With the binary
version I do get an error message when issuing
the --version option but the program(s) seem to
work O.K.

Dave told me I need to add some fonts to my system
but I'm unsure how to do that.

Any help appreciated.

Try selecting the mono font. If it still does not look right, check and
see what version of fltk you are using. Needs to be 1.3. The 10.04
default fltk was 1.1.

Did you build fltk-1.3.0 from source or use a repository pre-built?

You may need to build from source and make sure that your configure includes:

  $ ./configure --enable-threads --enable-xft --enable-shared

Hi Dave,

When you get tired of that cramped keyboard try using a USB
Keyboard/Mouse combo. And plug in an external monitor. It will make
that
netbook think it's one of the big dogs. My big fat fingers do better on
the external keyboard when I'm testing things on the Lenovo S10 netbook.
I've even taken it to church and plugged it in to the projection system.
Linux on a 12 x 16 foot screen ... that's a hoot.

Hi Dave (too many of us!)

Yes, I've done that trick with many a laptop (external keys-n-rat) when
I've had to spend "Lots" of time with something while away from base. A
"Real" mouse in particular is a real boon, not so much the keyboard, but
it's a personal thing too. I do have a little 12" VGA screen, also 12V
powered, so there is an option for an alternative fitting scheme.

For what I intend using it for, it's ideal in it's "small" format. Plus,
it only sucks about 1A from my vehicle supply, via a DC/DC converter,
even when running Fldigi etc. MUCH less, than the near 3A other
laptops/notebooks I have take. It's the 706 that's the power hogg now on
RX. The above menitoned external screen, takes another 1.5A

Now... If you can ever get the I/Q audio I/O working, true low power
(requrements) portable operation can be done, with a simple SDR,
something like the Ensamble. (??? That would also need Si570 support
in Flrig.)

(My Linux skills aren't yet up to getting Quisk or similar working, and
routing audio hither and thither with Jack, and I'm not sure the little
Acer would cope well doing all that either. Comments ?)

73 Dave.
