Assad: faithful student of ruthlessness

Bashar al-assad with wife Asma al-Assad

We imagine brutal dictators as sadistic men dressed in military gear, hunkered down in their bunkers and plotting murderous strategies.

In the Middle East, the cruellest strongmen, the likes of Saddam Hussein and Muammer Gaddafi, fed this image into our imagination, projecting fear through their every word and action. They were unstable and psychopathic; their families were dysfunctional and their children misbehaved.

GLOBAL INSIGHT

Then came Bashar al-Assad, the modern dictator. He is, like other tyrants, detached from reality, oblivious to the suffering of Syrians in their year-long revolution. But he is also a jeans-clad young computer nerd who lives a seemingly normal life with his glamorous British-born ex-banker wife.

According to the emails published by the UK’s Guardian, which purportedly belong to the couple, the 46-year-old Mr Assad’s forces could be shelling civilian areas while he is ordering his favourite music on iTunes or sharing songs with his wife. If these emails are genuine, it seems he cares little about the reforms he has announced, referring to the “rubbish laws of parties, elections, media”.

Asma al-Assad, whom many Syrians assumed to be alienated from the regime, seems perfectly at ease in her role as the dictator’s wife, shopping for expensive jewellery and ordering furniture and candlesticks from a Paris boutique. According to the leaked emails, she asks a friend to get hold of a Harry Potter book, as if nothing could be out of the ordinary in the Assad household.

The personality of Mr Assad has long perplexed Syrians and outsiders. For years after he inherited power from his father Hafez in 2000, the London trained eye-doctor was thought likely to evolve into an open-minded, reformist leader. Many of his foreign interlocutors were convinced that he was being held back by hardliners in the regime.

Months after the uprising against him erupted in March last year, many Syrians still entertained the hope of a miracle transformation in Mr Assad. Perhaps the revolution was his opportunity to push aside the nasty men in his regime, including his brother Maher, a top military chief, they figured. They were dismayed to see the president defending the brutality of his security forces and insisting that they were fighting terrorists.

Experts who have studied the trove of Assad emails say the Syrian leader is not a conventional dictator. James Fallon, an American neuroscientist who has written on the mind of dictators, says Mr Assad shares some of the characteristics of other tyrants – lack of empathy and need for flattery (he surrounds himself with young female aides who seem to be in awe of him). But he finds him “an incomplete dictator” who appears to lack a personal sadistic streak. “He comes across as a pathetic adolescent little tyrant. a weak leader … a sorry character,” says Prof Fallon.

Jerrold Post, a professor of political psychiatry at The George Washington University, says despite Mr Assad’s apparent lack of connection with the crisis in Syria, he seems to be “more put together” than someone such as Gaddafi. This can be explained, he says, by Mr Assad’s background: not a born leader, he was also not destined for the presidency, reaching it only because his brother Basil, the presumed heir, died in a car accident.

“He grew up at his father’s knee and swallowed the rule,” says Prof Post. “He dutifully followed his father’s bidding but this was not part of his psychological calculations, he wasn’t schooled in the intricacies of managing a totalitarian state.”

Mr Assad might fit into the “banality of evil” concept of German political philosopher Hannah Arendt – that ordinary people can commit crimes because they see it as the normal way of operating and cannot judge the consequences of their actions. Indeed, one government loyalist says no one should be surprised by the behaviour of the Assad regime. “It’s the only way the regime knows how to act, it’s just the way things are done.”

Though he might not look the part, Mr Assad has proved to be a faithful student of his father’s ruthless strategies. What has made him potentially more menacing, however, is that he lacks Hafez Assad’s character strength, his experience and self-confidence.

Back in 1982, Assad bombed the city of Hama to put down a rebellion by the Muslim Brotherhood, killing as many as 20,000 people. The tragedy of Hama is now happening in slow motion across Syria. Except that today, while the activists send the world images of the suffering and the destruction, the young Assad apparently surfs the net for amusement.

Version 4.0 — CC License draft ready for public comment!

We are pleased to post for public comment the first discussion draft of version 4.0. This draft is the product of an extended (and unprecedented) requirements gathering period involving input from CC affiliates, community and stakeholders. Thanks to all of you who contributed your valuable time and energy in the policy discussions and drafting sessions in support of this draft. We crafted this first draft (v4.0d1) mindful of the overarching design goals first articulated at the 2011 Global Summit:

  • Producing a 4.0 suite that addresses pressing challenges of important adopters, including those in countries where localized version of CC licenses have not existed, and never may, for any number of reasons;
  • Maximizing interoperability, reducing license proliferation and promoting standardization where possible; and
  • Longevity and ease of use.

Australian Broadcasting Corporation releases archival news footage under CC BY-SA

CC Australia has announced that the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Australia’s largest public broadcaster and news service, has used Wikimedia Commons to release a selection of historically significant television news stories under CC BY-SA. While other news broadcasters are also making material available under CC licenses, what makes this project significant is that the news segments that have been released aren’t obscure archival material or raw footage, but rather polished stories broadcast by some of the ABC’s premier current affairs programs about major events in Australian history. It includes, for example, news reports on the Apollo 11 moon landings, the Azaria Chamberlain case, and the floating of the Australian currency. Not to mention this 1974 footage of Arthur C. Clarke predicting the internet, with uncanny accuracy. Read more.

National Libraries of Spain and Germany, and Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Museum open up their data using CC0

CC0 has been getting lots of love in the last couple months in the realm of data, specifically GLAM data (GLAM as in Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums). The national libraries of Spain and Germany have released their bibliographic data using the CC0 public domain dedication tool. For those of you who don’t know what that means, it means that the libraries have waived all copyrights to the extent possible in their jurisdictions, placing the data effectively into the public domain. Relatedly, the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Museum, a major design museum in New York, has released the collection data for 60% of its documented collection into the public domain, also using CC0. Gunter the Grass and the Spirit of a New Germany

By Sam Vaknin
Author of "Malignant Self-love: Narcissism Revisited"

In an attempt to recapture the long-lost limelight, the former Waffen SS volunteer turned Germany's self-imputed anti-Nazi conscience, Gunter Grass, published a badly written poem in which he warned against German complicity in an imminent annihilation of the Iranian people by a nuclear-armed Israel.

The poem provoked expected reactions from all the usual suspects: denunciations, smear campaigns against the vain and bombastic octogenarian, and exhilaration in Iran and among anti-Semites and anti-Zionists the world over.

But one elephant remained unobserved in this crowded room: Grass' poem represents the new, ominous spirit of a resurgent Germany.

In in his controversial tome, "Hitler's Willing Executioners", the author, Daniel Goldhagen, posits that the Germans underwent a miraculous transformation in the wake of their devastating defeat in World war II. En masse, they have abandoned their centuries-old rabid, virulent, and ultimately lethal brand of anti-Semitism and anti-Slavism and became docile, altruistic citizens of the New World Order. This unlikely scenario sounds too good to be true because it is far from the truth.

In the last 9 years (starting in late 2003), I have had multiple opportunities to collaborate or hold lengthy conversations with dozens of young German scholars, intellectuals, artists, and budding politicians from across the political and ideological spectrum. As alcohol and mutual acquaintance put them at ease, they all, with one or two exceptions, reverted to shocking form.

Granted, this is far from a representative and statistically-significant sample. It may well mislead me and my readers into stereotypical generalizations. All the same, what these educated Germans in their thirties and forties had to say was both telling and ominous.

All my interlocutors paid lip service by strongly and unequivocally decrying the errant generations of the 1930s and 1940s. Yet, the subtle twist was that they criticized their predecessors for having failed to subjugate Europe, not for having embarked on this inane project in the first place. They also found the Nazi methods employed in the pursuit of Deutschland uber Alles distasteful and vulgar, though not always reprehensible.

Three years ago (in 2004), I dined at length with young political activists and thank tank scholars from a renowned right-of-center foundation (Stifftung). They were well-aware that I am an Israeli and a Jew. The exchange was so disconcerting that moments after we have dispersed, I committed it to paper from still fresh memory. It is typical of conversations I have had also with German left-of-center and centrist intellectuals and professionals.

As we were discussing European Union integration, one of them, an up-and-coming politician in his party, said: "After all, Hitler was the architect of the new Europe". Prompted to elaborate, he went on to say that Hitler had a vision of a united Europe, though under Germany's thumb. "The EU is and always was a German project." - He concluded.

I begged to differ, pointing out the chasm between the German praxis of uniting a land mass by war, genocide, and ethnic cleansing and the French vision of peacefully bringing ever closer the polities that occupy the continent while preserving their integrity and identity.

"There's more to Germany than Hitler." - Commented a German political advisor bitterly - "You constantly harp on this period, but we have a rich history, you know. Germans have been dreaming of European unity for at least a hundred years."

"Who are these 'You' who constantly reduce German history to the Nazi period?" - I enquired, not innocently.

"You," - my interlocutor responded vaguely, sweeping the scenery with an expansive movement of his arm.

"Next you will say that Hitler wasn't such a bad chap after all." - My Slavic wife interjected.

A chorus of well-rehearsed protestations arose: "He was a beast!", "He was a monster!", "The Holocaust was an inexcusable crime against the entire Human Race!" and such. But, to my hypervigilant ears, these slogans sounded mechanical and hollow.

"Hitler did some pretty bad things but also a lot of good. He revived the German economy, for instance." - Reasoned a senior member of the Think Tank.

"Please don't mention the Autobahns!" - I implored him.

"Hitler was not worse than other leaders of his period, like Stalin or Mussolini."

Again I disagreed:

"You cannot compare Hitler and Stalin to any other leader in history, before or after. They were sui generis. Their paranoia-fuelled butchery was a first and hitherto a lonely case in the annals of Mankind. The question that the world is grappling with ever since is how come a nominally civilized nation like Germany gave rise to Hitler, this grotesque apparition, and then proceeded to sacrifice itself to realize his morbid and sick nightmares."

The only woman in our group, a translator, observed resentfully:

"Germans were as much victims of Hitler as the Jews. They, too, were exterminated by a murderous regime."

"The word 'exterminated' is a euphemism for murdered or killed." - I explained to my wife - "Germans cloak reality behind a veil of disorienting and distorting language. The monetary compensation they have paid to the victims of the Holocaust, the greatest sadistic mass murder in history, they call 'Wiedergutmachung', 'making it all well again, restoring'."

I turned to the fuming feminine component of the long-forgotten dinner:

"Germans were not murdered merely because they were Germans. Germans got killed because they elected a deranged idiot to office and then declared war on the rest of the world with the express intention of assassinating tens of millions of people, whole nations, in effect - which they almost succeeded to do in the case of the Jews. You were no more victims than Hitler himself."

"Outrageous!" - Hissed my counterparty - "Not all Germans were Nazis, you know! Hitler took over Germany by force and violence! The Germans didn't want the war, Hitler forced it on them!"

"It sure doesn't look like it in the newsreels that I have seen."

"Propaganda!" - The political advisor pooh-poohed my observation - "What did you expect from this gang of criminals - objective new coverage? The Germans of my grandfather's generation were caught in a trap and couldn't extricate themselves without risking their lives and property. The SS committed atrocities, but the SS was a minuscule portion of the population and was composed of good-for-nothings and ex-convicts. The Wehrmacht fought honorably. Germans suffered greatly during the war. The Allies bombed our cities indiscriminately with the express intent of causing as many civilian casualties as possible, you know. But this kind of misbehavior is not considered a war crime because it was perpetrated against Germans."

"They must have been imitating the honorable Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe which carpet-bombed Warsaw, Belgrade, and hundreds of other cities in Europe."

Moments of uneasy silence lingered and I ordered the bill.

"It's on me." - Insisted the politician - "Let me defray some of the damage we, Germans, have inflicted upon you in Auschwitz." - He grinned

"Since we are into stereotypes, please don't pay, it would be so un-Jewish of you!" - Contributed the translator.

They all burst into howls of convulsive laughter.

A few months later, I had the occasion to watch the movie "The Fall" with Bruno Ganz in the lead role. It portrays a Hitler that is human and empathic, almost likable.

The repellent conversation I had with these young Germans is only a part of a larger ominous pattern. Germans have a proven history of confusing assertiveness for malignant narcissism. Liberalism and democracy are far from being an entrenched tradition in a nation that gave the world Kaiser Wilhelm II and Adolf Hitler.

As Miklos Haraszti, media freedom representative for the 56-nation Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe has finally admitted recently (in August 2007), journalists and opposition members of parliament are regularly harassed by the authorities for unfavorable and investigative reporting, in defiance of the highest courts of the land. The Committee to Protect Journalists  concurs. Germany's sprawling and all-pervasive civil service routinely uses red tape and regulatory powers to stifle dissent, punish adversaries of the regime, and reward cronies of the powers-that-be.

The generations of Germans that have grown up in a post Cold War and united country are again imbibing the volatile compound of victimhood and haughtiness. German historians and intellectuals are casting their compatriots as the victims of both Hitler's barbaric regime and the atrocities and war crimes committed by the Allies.

Germany aspires to a "place under the Sun" to properly reflect its economic might and geopolitical importance. But this newfound self-confidence is tainted with the contempt with which Germans hold all others: Jews, Slavs, Gypsies, Turks, and assorted minorities. This disdain is well-concealed but it is there, festering. Combined with Germans' resurgent grandiosity and dreams of European domination, Germany is once again a threat to its neighbors and, above all, to itself.

Charlotta Bass was born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1879 and moved to Los Angeles in 1910. Two years later, she purchased the California Eagle, one of the oldest African American newspapers in the west. Over the next forty years, she used the paper to advance a range of social causes and community activism including voter registration, housing, and employment discrimination. The staff members at the USC Digital Library project have created this fantastic digital collection of over 780 photos from the archives of the California Eagle. As the paper documented African American life in Los Angeles for many years, it is a fine way to learn about urban history and the African American community in the area. Visitors can search the entire collection by keyword, and they can also create their own customized collections for future reference. [KMG]

Confederate Imprints Collection: Sheet Music

http://content.lib.ua.edu/cdm4/results.php?CISOOP1=exact&CISOFIELD1=CISOSEARCHALL&CISOROOT=all&CISOBOX1=Confederate+Imprints+Collection

As the United States continues to explore the legacy of the Civil War, this timely collection adds to the conversation. The University of Alabama Libraries Digital Collection has created this collection of printed music created between 1861 and 1865 in the Confederacy. During its short-lived existence, the Confederacy produced more than 7,000 books, pamphlets, broadsides, maps, pieces of sheet music, pictures, and periodicals. Many collections of songs, known as songsters, were created during this period. The patriotic lyrics of these songs kept up southern morale, and they are interesting documents for musicologists, historians, and others. This collection features 50 pieces of music, including ballads like "Bonny Jean" and quick-steps like "Beauregard Manassas." Visitors can look over the pieces at their leisure, and those persons with a visual bent will be fascinated by the cover art for each musical composition. [KMG]

New Glarus and Green County Local History

http://uwdc.library.wisc.edu/collections/WI/NewGlarusLocHist

Green County, Wisconsin is known far and wide due to its tremendous cheese production, breweries, and the emigration of Swiss people to the town of New Glarus in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This remarkable digital collection from the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections group brings together 214 items that tell the story of this corner of Wisconsin. The collection was funded in part through a 2011 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant, and it features photographs, complete books, maps, and other items. Visitors can browse the collation by subject groupings, which include Farming, Books, Business & Commerce, and Leisure & Celebration. This last grouping should not be missed, as it includes images of Burkhalter's Elite Band, the "Famous Swiss Band," and an elaborate Fourth of July Parade in 1912. Finally, the "Books" area contains tax roll documents for New Glarus in the 1850s and a 1918 atlas of Green County. [KMG]

Explore UK

http://exploreuk.uky.edu/exploreukhome.html

The Explore UK website is an initiative by the University of Kentucky Special Collections and it is a true delight for anyone with an interest in this storied institution and Kentucky history more generally. First-time visitors will notice a scrolling section of images that introduce the photographs and other documents that are part of this growing collection. The sections here include Images, Athletics Archive, Board of Trustees, and Yearbooks. The Images archive includes over 30,000 images that cover everything from student life to campus buildings. There are a few thematic collections here that should not be missed. First among them is the John Tuska collection, which contains over 1,100 images of pieces created by the celebrated potter/sculptor and University of Kentucky professor. The Buildings area is quite nice as well, as it contains over 1,700 images that document both the architectural ornamentation of various buildings around campus and the overall feel of the campus layout. University of Massachusetts: Distinguished Visitors Program

http://www.library.umass.edu/spcoll/umarmot/?page_id=975

The University of Massachusetts at Amherst Library has an elaborate mix of digital collections available through their UMarmot program, which is the online presence of their Special Collections & University Archives division. One of the more recent digitization projects they have completed is the Distinguished Visitors Program. The Program contains talks from a wide range of visitors who came to Amherst in the 1970s. The talks here include lively conversations with Isaac Asimov, Julian Bond, Angela Davis, David Halberstam, Tom Hayden, and Jane Fonda. Visitors will also find a short description of each individual's talk, along with information about what brought him or her to campus. The talks are engaging; one of the best is the talk by David Halberstam, which features a discussion of American politics and foreign policy in the wake of Watergate. [KMG]

USGS Emergency Management

http://www.usgs.gov/emergency/

Most people are familiar with the work of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as it relates to describing and analyzing everything from tectonic activity to mineral deposits around the United States. People may be less familiar with their work as it relates to emergency management. This website provides information about their work to support the National Response Framework emergency support functions, along with a cornucopia of materials on the Natural Hazards Support System (NHSS), Issues of Interest, and a set of USGS Real-Time Resources. The National Hazards Support System includes an interactive world map of current natural hazard events. Visitors can toggle various natural hazard layers off and on as they see fit. Additionally, the Issues of Interest area contains updates on earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, and volcanoes. Finally, the USGS Real-Time Resources area contains real-time updates on current landslides, streamflow conditions, and other related matters. [KMG]

United Nations: Humanitarian Affairs

http://www.un.org/en/humanitarian/

The United Nations (UN) works on a myriad of topics related to human development, including addressing ethnic strife in different parts of the globe and coordinating disaster response strategies. This particular section of the UN website provides information about their work on humanitarian affairs. Here visitors can use the right-hand side of the page to learn about various programs that are currently underway in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Haiti. One of the most useful sections of the site is the Tools area. Here visitors can find resources available to relief efforts, such as the financial tracking service, the consolidated apparel process, and the International Early Warning Programme. One tool that visitors won't want to miss learning about is the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). The CERF functions "to enable more timely and reliable humanitarian assistance to those affected by natural disasters and armed conflicts." Finally, the site also contains a Thematic Issues area, which contains information about the impact of climate change, food security problems, and other matters as they relate to the UN's humanitarian relief projects. Internet Archive: Computers & Technology

http://archive.org/details/computersandtechvideos

The history of modern computing is a truly fascinating subject, and the folks at the Internet Archive have created this delightful collection of videos that document many recent developments in the field. The backbone of the 2,100 item collection is the inclusion of Computer Chronicles and Net Cafe. Computer Chronicles was a program hosted by Stewart Cheifet, broadcast from 1983 to 2002. Visitors can watch over 560 episodes of the program, which covers everything from color printers to trade shows. Moving on, visitors can view past episodes of Net Cafe, which was broadcast from 1996 to 2002. This weekly program went behind the scenes of what used to be known as the World Wide Web, and it was produced on location at Internet cafes around the Bay Area and Silicon Valley. The site is rounded out by other programs on internet governance and documentaries on Bulletin Board Services (BBS).

British Women Romantic Poets, 1789-1832

http://digital.lib.ucdavis.edu/projects/bwrp/

Those persons who love the work of 19th century poets will find much to capture their attention on this simple, yet thorough, website. Curated by Charlotte Payne at the University of California, Davis, this digital collection presents hundreds of works by British women writing from 1789 to 1832. The original goal of the project was to present an online scholarly archive of British and Irish women who wrote between the onset of the French Revolution until the passage of the Reform Act, which is known in English literary history as the Romantic period. There are several hundred texts available here, and visitors can scan through them alphabetically by author's last name. First-time visitors might do well to start with Mary Kay's "The Widow's Offering" which includes lovely poems such as "The Morning Star" and the tragic "A Dying Son's Farewell." Visitors can also learn about the project's participants, use the search engine, and look over a list of related web resources. [KMG]

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries have quite a trove of video materials in their collections, and over the past few years they have worked to place several dozen selections online as a type of public service. The films here are divided into three basic categories: Engineering, African Films, and Communications. The Communications area has a vast range of material, including a conversation with author and critic bell hooks about cultural criticism and transformation which draws on everything from Madonna as cultural phenomenon to the films of Spike Lee. Also, the talk by the late Edward Said on Orientalism should not be missed. The African Films area includes works such as "Ezra" which deals with the troubling situation involving child soldiers in Sierra Leone. Finally, the Communications area includes short instructional films on girding, casting, brazing and soldering, and composite materials manufacturing. Free registration via https://fps.psu.edu/ is required. [KMG]

On the Origins of Money
http://socserv.mcmaster.ca/econ/ugcm/3ll3/menger/money.txt

In the United States, a battle over the future of the penny has been raging for years. A number of economists and policymakers have called for the elimination of this unit of currency, pointing out that it costs more to create that its actual value of one cent. This past week, the Canadian government announced that it would be phasing out the Canadian one cent coin over the next few months, and that the last coin would be produced in the fall of 2012. Commenting on the decision, Canadian finance minister Jim Flaherty remarked that "pennies take up too much space on our dressers at home." Additionally, keeping these coins in circulation cost the Canadian government $130 million (CAD) per year. Interestingly enough, Canadians will be asked to round prices up or down to the nearest nickel, but credit card users will still be able to required to pay the exact amount stated for each transaction. Also, there are conversations going around the Canadian government calling for the elimination of the nickel in the future as well. Several other countries around the world have already phased out the nickel in the past few years, including New Zealand. [KMG]

Moving along, the second link will take interested parties to an article from the National Post about the future of the Canadian nickel. The third link leads to an article from CNET's "Crave" blog. The piece features a mediation from Canadian Tim Hornyak on his utter lack of love for the Canadian one cent coin, which he says is basically "dead weight." The fourth link takes users to the official news release from last Thursday about the elimination of the penny, courtesy of the Royal Canadian Mint. The fifth link leads to the Coins and Canada website, which is an excellent source of information about Canadian coins and related matters. New Jersey Digital Legal Library

http://njlegallib.rutgers.edu/

The Rutgers University Library for the Center for Law & Justice hosts the New Jersey Digital Legal Library in order "to enhance scholarly, practitioner, and public access to the materials of New Jersey law and legal history." The materials in this prodigious online collection are divided into 16 different sections, including decisions and court documents related to affordable housing, the Attorney General's office, and executive orders issued by the governor. One particularly compelling area is the Supreme Court of New Jersey Oral Arguments Archive section. Here visitors can view the oral arguments offered before the court from 2005 to the present day. Visitors shouldn't miss the Chief Justice Joseph Weintraub Lecture Archive. Here they will find talks dating back to 1981 on topics such as "American History and the Study of Constitutional Law" and "Principled Decisions." [KMG]

Late 19th- and Early 20th-Century Asian Cities

http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/maps/asian-cities/

The map library at the University of Chicago has thousands of maps documenting everything from the growth of early cities in the Islamic world to the ethnographic breakdown of Chicago's neighborhoods. In the past several years, the library has been working to digitize some of its maps that document Asian cities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The growth of some of these cities in the past century or so has been explosive; cities such as Beijing and Kolkata (Calcutta) would be unrecognizable to a time traveller deposited in their current urban form. Visitors will find two dozen maps here, which they can browse them as they see fit. The program used to look at the maps, Zoomify, allows visitors to zoom in quite closely to look at topographic and other details. Some of the highlights here include a 1922 planning map of Bangkok, a map of Bombay from 1919, and a tour guide map of Peshawar city from 1921. [KMG]

The Nature of Science and the Scientific Method [pdf]

http://www.geosociety.org/educate/NatureOfScience.htm

For those who haven't been in science class for some time, the scientific method may be a bit of a hazy memory. Those people (educators and others included) who need a bit of a refresher, along with a nice guide to talking about the scientific method, will find this resource from The Geological Society of America most efficacious. Authored by scientist Christine V. McLelland, this 9-page document "promotes understanding of the nature of science and how the scientific method is used to advance science, focusing in particular on the Earth sciences." The document covers topics like "What is Science?" and breaks the scientific method down into its five primary parts. It also offers some brief talking points about the nature of science, and a nice bibliography. [KMG]

Missouri Digital News

http://www.mdn.org/

Is it possible to wade through the wide world of news about Missouri without getting overwhelmed? This website makes the process a snap, and it's a fabulous resource created by the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Missouri. The program is supported by journalism professionals and students animated by The Journalist's Creed, which was authored by the first dean of the University of Missouri's School of Journalism, Walter Williams. First-time visitors should read the creed, and then navigate the site to follow live action and audio from the state's house and senate. Visitors can use the "Stories" area to look up recent news pieces by subject, date, and staff member. Moving along, visitors can search for information about state government, the Supreme Court dockets, and find out how each member of the state's legislative body voted on recent bills. It's a rather fine resource, and the Twitter feed is also worth a look. [KMG]

Learn About Spinal Muscular Atrophy

http://www.learnaboutsma.org/

What is spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)? It is an inherited disease that affects approximately 1 in 10,000 infants born in the United States each year. There are four types of SMA, which can cause the muscles to function improperly and become smaller and weaker over time. Visitors to this site, which was created by researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, should start their journey here by clicking on the What is SMA? section. Here they can watch Dr. Darryl De Vivo provide an overview of the four types of SMA and then look through video clips from other professionals who provide additional insights into the genetics behind SMA. Moving on, the SMA Science area provides high-quality animations that illustrate the various processes involved with the SMN gene (mutations of which are responsible for SMA) and protein splicing. Visitors can also click on the SMA Therapies to learn more about what's being done for people living with SMA, along with potential new treatments. [KMG]

BioQUEST [pdf]

http://bioquest.org/

The original idea for BioQUEST came from Professor John R. Jungck, who taught at Beloit College in southern Wisconsin. Soon after its creation, the organization found willing partners in the guise of the Annenberg/CPB Project and other parties, including the National Science Foundation and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The goal of BioQUEST is to support "undergraduate biology education through collaborative development of open curricula in which students pose problems, solve problems, and engage in peer review." The site features information about BioQUEST's upcoming teacher education events and conferences, along with a section of Open Resources, located on the left side in the center of the page. These are publicly-accessible resources for teachers, and first-time visitors should start by looking over the Problem Spaces. The problem spaces offer "a way of organizing diverse kinds of resources to support student inquiry." Undergraduate biology teachers can take advantage of these clusters of resources organized around topics that include West Nile virus, chimpanzee conservation, and other topics. Moving along, visitors can also take advantage of the Investigative Cases, which are learning modules designed to help students in a range of fields like chemistry and health science explore different scientific scenarios. The site is rounded out by information about ongoing projects and a place where visitors can sign up for the RSS feed. [KMG]

PhysioBank (Last reviewed in the Scout Report on February 7, 2003)

http://www.physionet.org/physiobank/

The PhsyioBank is an impressive archive of digital recordings of physiologic signals and related data for use by the biomedical research community. The website is maintained by the National Institute of Biomedical Imagining and Bioengineering and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, and new material is being added on a regular basis. Currently, the site includes biomedical signals and reports from healthy subjects and patients with a range of conditions, including congestive heart failure, epilepsy, gait disorders, and sleep apnea. First-time visitors would do well to take the interactive tour and then use the Getting Started section for locating resources. Also, visitors should make sure to look at the PhysioBank Archives. Here they will find a complete listing of all the currently available databases, organized according to the types of signals and annotations contained in each database. Finally, visitors can send queries about the site and its database via a contact form on the site's homepage. [KMG]

Clinical Skills Online

http://www.elu.sgul.ac.uk/cso/

New doctors and those studying to practice medicine may need a bit of assistance as they prepare to administer direct care to patients. The Clinical Skills Online website was created to offer some helpful videos for such persons, and was funded by the United Kingdom's Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine. The thirteen videos are all available at no cost. They cover topics like History Taking, Thyroid Examination, and Abdominal Examination. The videos contain precise language and are designed to complement existing formal medical training. Needless to say, there is a disclaimer on the website that highlights the terms under which these videos should be used. It's a nice resource for those entering a range of health care professions, and it's worth sharing with others in the field. [KMG]

Theo Wangemann's 1889-90 European Recordings

http://www.nps.gov/edis/photosmultimedia/theo-wangemann-1889-1890-european-recordings.htm

Theo Wangemann was the world's first professional sound recordist, and was hired by Thomas Edison in 1888 to produce a set of musical recordings for the wax cylinder phonograph. Wangemann worked at Edison's West Orange, New Jersey laboratory in 1888-89. Interestingly enough, Wangemann is perhaps best known (until now) for his work recording Johannes Brahms at the piano in 1889. In 2011, the National Park Service digitized a rather curious box of wax cylinder recordings made by Wangemann during his trip through Europe. During this trip he recorded Otto von Bismarck, Helmuth von Moltke, and he even found time to make a home recording in which some of his relatives sent greetings back to family members who had emigrated to America. This website gives visitors the ability to listen to all of these remarkable recordings in their entirety. Visitors should start by reading the two original essays on the site. One of the essays provides a biographical sketch of Wangemann, and the other deals with the appearance of Bismarck and Moltke "before the recording horn." The site is rounded out by a clutch of historic photographs of Wangemann and his wax cylinders. [KMG]

First-time visitors can use the Green Link area to learn more about any of the state's 172 greens. Visitors will that the profile of each green includes a narrative essay that describes the green's landscape, its history, and prominent nearby buildings and public monuments. The Exhibits area includes in-depth looks at town greens in Guilford, New Haven, Norwich, and more. The site also includes a Data Center section. Users will find detailed information on most of the town greens in the state, along with additional data resources such as planning documents. [KMG]

Interactive Physics Simulations [Flash]

http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/category/physics

At the top of this site's homepage, visitors will see a banner that proclaims "Over 70 million simulations delivered." Needless to say, the Interactive Physics Simulations site is quite popular, and the offerings here can be used in the classroom or by persons with a general curiosity about static electricity, alpha decay, and other related topics. The site is sponsored by a range of institutions, including the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the National Science Foundation. The site includes three dozen different simulations, many of which are available in over a dozen languages, including French, Russian, Chinese, Italian, and Vietnamese. First-time visitors might want to start with the "Build an Atom" which affords visitors the opportunity to build an atom out of protons, neutrons, and electrons and then play a fun game after they're done. Also, users can look at the simulations by topical headings, which include "Sound & Waves", "Heat & Thermo", and "Light & Radition". [KMG]

Nuclear Deterrence in the 21st Century [pdf]

http://www.rand.org/pubs/monographs/MG1103.html

Therese Delpech was known for her work on international relations and her service at the French Atomic Energy Commission and as an adviser to the International Committee of the Red Cross. She passed away in January 2012, and the RAND Corporation recently published her last work, which is available on this site. This 196-page work calls for "a renewed intellectual effort to address the relevance of the traditional concepts of first strike, escalation, extended deterrence, and other Cold War-era strategies." The work is divided into seven thematic chapters, including "Ahead of Us: The Big Piracy Game?" "Space and Cyberdeterrence," and "Lesson From Crises." This last chapter is quite intriguing as it looks at past Cold War crises with an eye towards the future and how interested parties might understand future critical junctures. This work is well-written and thoughtful, and for those persons studying international affairs, political science, and other topics, it will be worth a look. [KMG]

The Science of Speed

http://www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/sos/

A unique partnership between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASCAR is the basis for this fun and informative website. The site features twelve episodes created as part of "The Science of Speed," hosted by Diandra Leslie-Pelecky. Each episode features a NASCAR car in a variety of racing and testing situations, and some special guests turn up, such as Jeff Gordon and Michael McDowell. The topics covered here include car safety, drag & drafting, grip, sound, and friction. Each clip is accompanied by racing footage and expert commentary that makes each encounter lively and compelling. This is a great way to pique the interest of those persons who might find certain aspects of physics and related fields a bit inaccessible. Visitors shouldn't miss the "Firesuits" episode as it explores the world of these very important safety devices. [KMG]

British Museum: Explore: Time

http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/themes/time/introduction.aspx

What is time? What does it mean to us? These are a but a few of the arresting questions asked by the British Museum's online exhibit exploring the nature, structure, and history of time, time-keeping, and other related subjects. This particular section is part of their larger "Explore" online collection, and it draws on their the British Museum's vast holdings to look into this scientific, cultural, and historical phenomenon. The site includes five sections, including Measuring and Keeping Time, Personal Time, and The Effects of Time. The Measuring and Keeping Time area is quite arresting, and it includes images of a Native American 'winter counts' cloth which served as a recorder of events that took place between 1785 and 1901. Moving on, The Effects of Time area is rather remarkable as well, as it contains material on how humans have attempted to stop or slow down the passage of time via techniques like retaining a youthful portrait of an aging ruler on coins and paper money. Michael T. "Nuf Ced" McGreevey

http://www.flickr.com/photos/boston_public_library/collections/72157623971712149/

Today, a sports bar near a professional sports venue is a given. Usually there are many sports bars, and they are loud, boisterous places decorated with photographs of celebrated players and memorabila. Back in the 1890s, one Michael T. McGreevey of Boston opened a bar that became the headquarters of the Boston Royal Rooters, the "rabid and riotous" fans of Boston's various professional baseball teams. His saloon was located near the old Huntington Avenue Grounds, and by the early 1900s, it was decorated with hundreds of photos of baseball players. After his tavern closed in in the early years of Prohibition, McGreevey's collection found its way to the Boston Public Library. This marvelous digital collection brings together more than 170 photographs that once appeared on the walls of his tavern, and they tell the story of Boston's baseball teams and the city's history more generally. Visitors will find images of the old Huntington Avenue Grounds (where the first World Series was played), Cy Young, Boston policemen, and Mr. McGreevey himself. It's quite a collection, and one that is worth sharing with fans of America's pastime. [KMG]

Detroit Can't Wait
http://www.michigan.gov/detroitcantwait

The city of Detroit has faced a wide range of troubles over the past several decades, including significant population losses, a declining tax base, and the economic restructuring and reconfiguration of its primary industry, automobile manufacturing. This past week, Mayor Dave Bing signed an agreement with Governor Rick Snyder that will prevent the city from having to declare bankruptcy, which seemed like a solution that was in the best interest of many stakeholders, including residents of the Motor City. The city currently holds long-term debt that is close to $12 billion, and the hope is that this cooperative agreement will address the city's long-term fiscal problems. As part of his commitment to the process, Governor Snyder launched a website ("Detroit Can't Wait") that states that "in the short term…the streetlights are on at night and the trash is picked up." The city will also have to review long-term contracts and agreements with a number of its unionized employees, which may also be a difficult and involved process. The city can ill afford to wait to move forward, as without new loans Detroit will run out of cash in mid-May. [KMG]

The first link leads to a piece from last week's The Economist which talks about Detroit's recent financial woes. The second link will take visitors to a good report on the recent deal between the city and the state government filed by NPR as part of their "Tell Me More" series. The third link will whisk users away to a piece on "blotting" in Detroit. As the NPR feature describes it, "blotting" is the process by which some Detroit residents are annexing vacant lots around their own property and making use of this otherwise abandoned land. The fourth link leads to an editorial from this Monday's Port Huron Times Herald on this recent decision that notes that "the troubled city [Detroit] truly has embarked on the long road to right itself." Moving along, the fifth link leads to a piece from this Tuesday's Detroit News about the financial situation of the world-famous Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The last link will take interested parties to the website created by Governor Snyder to inform Michigan residents and members of the public about the ongoing situation in Detroit regarding the city's financial health.

The Habit of Identity

by Dr. Sam Vaknin,

author of Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited

More Information on Identity, Image, and the Self

In a famous experiment, students were asked to take a lemon home and to get used to it.  Three days later, they were able to single out “their” lemon from a pile of rather similar ones.  They seemed to have bonded.

Is this the true meaning of love, bonding, coupling?

Do we simply get used to other human beings, pets, or objects?

Habit-forming in humans is reflexive.  We change ourselves and our environment in order to attain maximum comfort and well being.  It is the effort that goes into these adaptive processes that forms a habit.  The habit is intended to prevent us from constant experimenting and risk taking.  The greater our well being, the better we function and the longer we survive.

Actually, when we get used to something or to someone – we get used to ourselves.  In the object of the habit we see a part of our history, all the time and effort that we put into it.  It is an encapsulated version of our acts, intentions, emotions and reactions.  It is a mirror reflecting back at us that part in us, which formed the habit.  Hence, the feeling of comfort:  we really feel comfortable with our own selves through the agency of the object of our habit.

Because of this, we tend to confuse habits with identity.  If asked WHO they are, most people will resort to describing their habits.  They will relate to their work, their loved ones, their pets, their hobbies, or their material possessions.  Yet, all of these cannot constitute part of an identity because their removal does not change the identity that we are seeking to establish when we enquire WHO someone is.  They are habits and they make the respondent comfortable and relaxed.  But they are not part ofidentity in the truest, deepest sense.

Still, it is this simple mechanism of deception that binds people together.  A mother feels that her offspring are part of her identity because she is so used to them that her well being depends on their existence and availability.  Thus, any threat to her children is interpreted to mean a threat on her Self.  Her reaction is, therefore, strong and enduring and can be recurrently elicited.

The truth, of course, is that her children are a part of her identity in a superficial manner.  Removing them will make her a different person, but only in the shallow, phenomenological sense of the word.  Her deep-set, true identity will not change as a result.  Children do die at times and their mother does go on living, essentially unchanged.

But what is this kernel of identity that I am referring to?  This immutable entity which is the definition of who we are and what we are and which, ostensibly, is not influenced by the death of our loved ones?  What is so strong as to resist the breaking of habits that die hard?

It is our personality.  This elusive, loosely interconnected, interacting, pattern of reactions to our changing environment.  Like the Brain, it is difficult to define or to capture.  Like the Soul, many believe that it does not exist, that it is a fictitious convention.  Yet, we know that we do have a personality.  We feel it, we experience it.  It sometimes encourages us to do things – at other times, as much as prevents us from doing them.  It can be supple or rigid, benign or malignant, open or closed.  Its power lies in its looseness.  It is able to combine, recombine and permute in hundreds of unforeseeable ways.  It metamorphizes and the constancy of its rate and kind of change is what gives us a sense of identity.

Actually, when the personality is rigid to the point of being unable to change in reaction to changing circumstances, we say that it is disordered.  A personality disorder is the ultimate misidentification.  The individual mistakes his habits for his identity.  He identifies himself with his environment, taking behavioral, emotional, and cognitive cues exclusively from it.  His inner world is, so to speak, vacated, inhabited, as it were, by the apparition of his True Self.

Such a person is incapable of loving and of living.  He is incapable of loving because to love (at least according to this model) is to equate and collate two distinct entities: one's Self and one's habits.  The personality disordered sees no distinction.  He is his habits and, therefore, by definition, can only rarely and with an incredible amount of exertion, change them.

And, in the long term, he is incapable of living because life is a struggletowards, a striving, a drive at something.  In other words:  Life is Change.  The person who cannot change, cannot live.

American Radio Works: Don't Lecture Me

                                                http://americanradioworks.publicradio.org/features/tomorrows-college/lectures/

Over the past few decades, higher education has been vastly transformed by online course offerings and myriad changes driven by technological advances and innovation. The old model of straight lectures and recitations to courses large and small has been challenged by new research as well. This documentary from American RadioWorks looks at different educators and institutions as they think about how to transform the college classroom experience. The lead reporter for this project was Emily Hanford, and visitors can listen to the entire program here. The program is divided into three primary sections, including The Problem with Lecturing and Inventing a New Kind of College, which looks into the innovative learning environment that's been created at the University of Minnesota at Rochester. Visitors can also read a transcript of the program and flip through the Reporter's Notebook which features Hanford's own thoughts on these ambitious efforts. [KMG]

Public Housing Transformation and Crime: Making the Case for Responsible Relocation

                                                http://www.urban.org/UploadedPDF/412523-public-housing-transformation.pdf

As the city of Chicago began the plan to transform its notoriously poorly-run Chicago Housing Authority in the early 1990s, many wondered what would become of its residents and the surrounding communities. This recent report from the Urban Institute looks into the "complex relationship between public housing transformation and crime in Chicago and Atlanta." Authored by five different researchers at the Institute, this 11-page document takes a close look at crime rates in the communities that relocated public housing residents into private-market housing. The report notes that the effects were "not the simplistic relationship implied by media accounts, but rather a complex picture of declining crime rates in both cities, a small net decrease in violent crime citywide associated with the transformation efforts, but effects in some neighborhoods—those that received more than a few relocated households—that suggest that crime would have been lower in those neighborhoods had there been no public housing transformation." The report includes a number of helpful charts and summary statistics, and it will be most useful to policy analysts and planners. [KMG]

                                                Exploratorium: Geometry Playground

                                                http://www.exploratorium.edu/geometryplayground/

You've probably been to a playground, but have you been to the Geometry Playground? It's just as much fun, and it may change the way you think about geometry. Created by the good folks at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, this exhibit is meant to complement the traveling exhibit which has been featured in other science museums around the United States. The exhibit here contains three sections: Seeing, Moving, and Fitting Things Together. In the Seeing exhibit, visitors can make their way through a fine photo essay about the invisible geometry of light, while the Moving section gets interested parties up and exploring geometry with their bodies. Each of these sections has great photo essays, complemented by animations and fun activities.

The works date from the 9th to the 16th centuries, and they "give vivid testimony to the creative impulses of the often nameless craftsmen who continually discovered new ways of animating the contents of hand-produced books." These works include a 10th century Ottonian manuscript (complete with its imitation of Byzantine textile with gold decoration) and the Towneley Lectionary, which was illuminated by Giulio Clovio. Visitors can click on the Collection Contents to get started with an alphabetical list of all the works here. Additionally, they can click on Related Subjects to look for complementary materials within the Library's digital collections. [KMG]

                                                Chicago Jazz

                                                http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/cja/jazzmaps/ctlframe.htm

University of Chicago alumnus and long-time Hyde Park resident Leon H. Lewis was a great lover of jazz and he spent many an evening in the jazz clubs of the South Side. As part of the Chicago Jazz Club Project, several employees of the Chicago Jazz Archive at the University of Chicago worked with Lewis to create a map of Chicago's jazz clubs from roughly 1915 to the early 1940s. Visitors can view the map in segments, or they can look at the entire map in one fell swoop. For each map, visitors can click on each of the clubs to learn a bit more about the location and view period advertisements and photographs. Additionally, visitors can click on the Club Lists section to view an entire list of all the clubs, complete with brief listing of performers who entertained at each establishment on a regular or semi-regular basis. Housing Policy

                                                http://www.housingpolicy.org/

Understanding the variegated terrain of local and state housing policies is key for urban planners, geographers, and others with an interest in the built environment and public policy. This site was created by the Center for Housing Policy (the research affiliate of the National Housing Conference) in order to provide information for "expanding the availability of homes for working families and others in your community." The site was launched in 2008, and includes sections such as Toolbox, Building a Strategy, and Forum. The Getting Started area provides answers to basic questions such as "What is 'affordable housing'?" and "What is 'subsidized housing'?" Moving on, the Toolbox area includes documents and summaries on specific policy tools designed for a variety of reasons, from meeting the housing needs of older adults to improving residential energy efficiency. Visitors won't want to miss the Building a Strategy area. Here they will find information about how to create a successful housing strategy that will provide residential units for a range of community members. [KMG]

Figge Art Museum Grant Wood Digital Collection

                                                http://digital.lib.uiowa.edu/grantwood/

Grant Wood is best known for his painting "American Gothic," but what of his other works? There are many, of course, and this remarkable digital collection from the University of Iowa Libraries presents a trove of visual material, scrapbooks, and other material objects from his life and career. The materials here come from the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, and funding for the digital collection came from the Henry Luce Foundation. Visitors can scroll through the scrapbooks here, and also wander around topical sections that include Obituaries, American Gothic, and Daughters of Revolution. These materials were compiled by his sister (who was also occasionally his model), Nan Wood Graham. Visitors shouldn't miss the Time in Europe section, as it contains newspaper articles and other items that relate the story of how important Wood's travels were to his art and life. [KMG]

Now What a Time: Blues, Gospel and the Fort Valley Music Festivals, 1938-1943

                                                http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/ftvhtml/ftvhome.html

To sit down with a group of friends to sing and play musical instruments qualifies as a great experience for many, and humans have reveled in such get-togethers for millennia. This beautiful digital collection from the American Memory Project at the Library of Congress presents 100 sound recordings from the folk festival at Fort Valley State College in Georgia. The recordings primarily consist of blues and gospel songs and related documentation, which includes notes from these field recordings and other related materials. Visitors to the site can read biographies of the individuals who made the recordings, along with a topical essay titled "Noncommercial Recordings: The 1940s." Also, there's a map of the region, along with a selected bibliography. Those persons looking for a few songs to start with shouldn't miss the recordings of "Bottle Up and Go" and "Death is an Awful Thing." [KMG]

                                                The Friend of Man

There are many ways to understand the anti-slavery movements in the United States during the 19th century, and newspapers are but one of the key primary document types used by historians. Cornell University is fortunate enough to have a near complete run of the "Friend of Man" newspaper, which was published between 1836 and 1842. This very intriguing title allows curious visitors to learn about a group of people in central New York interested in "changing America" during this unique period. The paper documents the "regional interconnectedness of reform" throughout the region, with a focus on cities such as Utica, Rochester, Buffalo, Albany and New York City. Visitors to the site can browse through the various issues at their leisure and they can also perform a full-text search. [KMG]

                                                MoMA: Print/Out

There are several ways for online visitors to approach MoMA's massive exhibition on printmaking since the 1990s. Use Exhibition Views to virtually stroll through 31 shots of the galleries in which the over 200 works in the show are arranged - it can be difficult to read the labels, but a 40-page exhibition checklist that includes a thumbnail view of each piece is provided, so cross-referencing is easy. Choose Works in the Online Collection to do a search that retrieves works included in Print/Out from MoMA's online catalog. The resulting list can be sorted by artist's name, date, or title. Finally, the Selected Projects section showcases a number of projects related to the show, for example, Felix Gonzalez-Torres's project based on “Untitled” (1991), a black & white photograph of the artist’s empty bed, that was reproduced billboard size and shown at various locations around New York City between February 20 and March 18, 2012. Other projects are Rirkrit Tiravanija's rucksack installations, and Lucy McKenzie's editions of prints she call posters.

In early April, there is always a bit of a buzz surrounding the announcement of the Pulitzer Prizes. The awards were first given out in 1917 as part of the legacy of Joseph Pulitzer, a captain of the newspaper industry in late 19th-century America. This year's prizes were announced this week, and as usual, a diverse set of news outlets and commentators offered a broad range of comment on the selections. The Christian Science Monitor was one of the first news outlets to comment on the fact that a prize for fiction was not awarded this year, and other people, including author Ann Patchett, offered comment as well. One of the Pulitzer Prize jurors, Susan Larson, told National Public Radio that she was "shocked…angry…and very disappointed." Writing in the New York Times this Tuesday, Ann Patchett remarked that "The Pulitzer Prize is our best chance as writers and readers and booksellers to celebrate fiction. This was the year we all lost." It's worth noting that the last time a fiction award was not given was in 1977, when the fiction jury chose Norman MacLean's beautiful "A River Runs Through It," but the Pulitzer Board chose not to award the prize. Stalkers are not made of one cloth. Some of them are psychopaths, others are schizoids, narcissists, paranoids, or an admixture of these mental health disorders. Stalkers harass their victims because they are lonely, or because it is fun (these are latent sadists), or because they can't help it (clinging or co-dependent behaviour), or for a myriad different reasons.

Clearly, coping techniques suited to one type of stalker may backfire or prove to be futile with another.

In the absence of legitimate political venues of airing grievances, terrorism is sometimes the only mode of expression. It also guarantees social mobility and respectability. It restores the terrorists' feelings of omnipotence, omnipresence ("we are everywhere and to be feared globally"), and omniscience ("we know best because we are the righteous") which are repeatedly shattered by the West's clear superiority in every conceivable field.

Terrorism is, therefore, a form of mass therapy through shared psychosis. This is an especially insidious recipe. As long as people are narcissistically injured, envious, and rageful - terrorism is here to stay.

Narcissists are misogynists, women-haters. Women represent sex, intimacy, and family and, therefore, mediocrity.

The narcissist divides all women into sluttish huntresses and sexless saints. He aims to frustrate and subjugate them.

The differential diagnoses in the personality disorders section of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) contain many overlaps and culture-bound artefacts.
The categorical (non-dimensional) taxonomy leads to multiple diagnoses (co-morbidity) in the same patient.

According to Freud and his followers, our psyche is a battlefield between instinctual urges and drives (the id), the constraints imposed by reality on the gratification of these impulses (the ego), and the norms of society (the superego). This constant infighting generates what Freud called "neurotic anxiety" (fear of losing control) and "moral anxiety" (guilt and shame).

But these are not the only types of anxiety. "Reality anxiety" is the fear of genuine threats and it combines with the other two to yield a morbid and surrealistic inner landscape.

These multiple, recurrent, "mini-panics" are potentially intolerable, overwhelming, and destructive. Hence the need to defend against them. There are dozens of defense mechanisms. The most common among them are listed and described in this booklet.

Symptoms are the patient's complaints. They are highly subjective and amenable to suggestion and to alterations in the patient's mood and other mental processes. Symptoms are no more than mere indications. Signs, on the other hand, are objective and measurable. Signs are evidence of the existence, stage, and extent of a pathological state. Headache is a symptom - short-sightedness (which may well be the cause of the headache) is a sign.

Cerebral narcissists use their intellect, intelligence, and verbal skills to derive narcissistic supply. Somatic narcissists leverage their body and sexuality to secure an uninterrupted flow of supply.

Each narcissist is either predominantly cerebral or somatic, but there is no type-constancy: the dominant type gives way to the recessive type in times of scarce, deficient, or absent supply (for instance: following a major life crisis).

Narcissists are also prone to incest and sexual paraphilias such as pedophilia and fetishism.

Serial killers represent a dual failure - of their own development as full-fledged, productive individuals - and of the culture and society they grow in. In a pathologically narcissistic civilization - social anomies proliferate. Such societies breed malignant objectifiers - people devoid of empathy - also known as "narcissists".

In bird “divorce,” females seen having the advantage

                                                April 14, 2012

Divorce might not be healthy—but at least it may be natural, if findings from a new study are to be believed.

The research examined what scientists call “divorce” among shorebirds of a species known as Calidris alpina, and found that females tend to fare better in the aftermath of the splitups.

Also called dunlins, these long-lived birds often mate with the same partner over several seasons, then go their separate ways, according to biologists Lars-Ĺke Flodin and Donald Blomqvist of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

The scientists recorded 126 breeding attempts and found that 23 percent of the pairs divorced. They then compared the breeding success of males and females before and after “divorce” to explore some causes and consequences of the change. Female divorcees that found new partners doubled their nest success, the researchers found.

The improvement “appeared independent of breeding experience,” Flodin and Blomqvist wrote, reporting their findings in the research journal Behaviour. “We were unable to detect any effect of divorce on male reproductive success.”

The researchers concluded that female dunlins divorce to upgrade to a better mate or territory.

Divorcing couples weren’t found to differ from non-divorcing couples in nest success in the season preceding divorce, both in terms of total nest failure or the number of eggs in the nest. Non-divorcing pairs and male divorcees that paired with new partners had similar nest success in consecutive years.

“Social monogamy is a rare mating system among animals, occurring commonly only in birds,” the researchers noted. “In long-lived birds, pair bonds may persist for several seasons in some species, while in others mate change occurs even when both partners are still alive.”

In a world that is increasingly hostile to children, it is vitally important
to give each one the childhood they deserve. In his latest book, pastor
Johann Christoph Arnold offers an approach to parenting that is grounded in
faith and old-fashioned in the best sense. It won't be easy, but parents can
still welcome children, raise them the right way, and prepare them to stand
their ground in these challenging times.
Arnold doesn't mince words, but he shows genuine concern for the plight of
parents faced with difficult parenting decisions. As the fabric of family
and society is torn apart, this book offers concrete advice for parents who
want to pass on to their children the values their parents gave them.

ways of disseminating scholarly work. We have developed a new publishing
model to help you finance and produce monographs in Open Access and, most
importantly, we have founded the OAPEN Library, a publishing platform
designed to give global impact to peer-reviewed research from across Europe.
Our members have digital publishing programmes, make use of digital
repositories, publish in different European languages, command a worldwide

libraries. All titles available through the OAPEN Library have been subject
                                                to a stringent peer-review process.

                                                BookChums' Interview with Sam Vaknin

                                                Post by: Kabita Sonowal

Noted Israeli author, Sam Vaknin is synonymous with varied portfolios of work from being the editor-in-chief for the online magazine, Global Politician to writing the widely-acclaimed book, Malignant Self-love: Narcissism Revisited, a treatise and discussion on narcissism. He has also worked as an economic advisor for governments in Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern and Central Europe and he served in the Israel Defense Forces. And the list goes on; here’s a person, who has been there and done that!

You’re an individual with versatile & varied interests: you work as the editor-in-chief for the Global Politician & you are a writer. In the past, you’ve worked as an economic advisor. What motivates you? What is your inspiration?
I am driven by the need to garner attention (positive, or even negative.) Attention (“narcissistic supply”) is both the fuel on which I run and the drug to which I am thoroughly addicted. I, therefore, gravitate towards professional positions, vocations, and occupations which guarantee my visibility, being the center of attention, and wielding power over people.

                                                What triggered you to write?
As a young boy, I was short, foul-smelling, near-sighted, and obese (nothing much has changed since then …:o)) A reject and an outcast, ostracized by peers and physically and psychologically abused by authority figures, such as parents and teachers, I had to struggle to merely survive. Until I made the miraculous discovery: the omnipotence of the word! By combining and permutating syllables, I was able to motivate others to do my bidding; to induce emotions; to draw attention to myself; to generate shared fantasies; to make a generous living; and to get out of harm’s way. It was nothing short of magic.

Tell us in your own words, your perception or views on narcissism.
Pathological narcissism is the narcissist’s incurable obsession with people’s reactions to a piece of fiction created by the narcissist at an early age in order to fend off hurt and abuse (“The False Self”.) The False Self is everything the narcissist is not: omnipotent, omniscient, brilliant … in short: perfect. The narcissist is compelled to behave in ways which elicit from onlookers and nearest and dearest alike affirmation and confirmation that the False Self is credible and real, not a mere fallacious narrative. These repeated attempts to square the circle generate contradictory, exploitative, manipulative, and self-defeating behaviors; rage when frustrated; and a pronounced lack of empathy (the narcissist has to be able to instantly devalue and discard those who threaten his precariously balanced house of cards).

Tell us about your hobbies & interests.
I have about 3-4 hours of leisure time per day. I am an eclectic cinephile and watch a minimum of 10 quality movies a week (many of them art house); I read mostly thrillers and mysteries bordering on pulp – to defray the heavy material I consume habitually as a columnist, editor, and amateur psychologist, philosopher, and economist; I write compulsively and incessantly.

                                                Any advice for aspiring writers?
KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid. Dumb down your prose, use monosyllabic words, avoid reverting to a dictionary or thesaurus. The vast majority of your readers are idiots and will resent you deeply for any display of intellectual superiority.
If you write fiction, concentrate on romance and sex. If you are a non-fiction wannabe dedicate your tomes to conspiracy theories, religion, and the occult. Nothing sells better than drivel.
Finally: self-publish e-books and promote them yourself. In today’s world with barriers to entry and gatekeepers rendered obsolete by technology, traditional print publishers are dinosaurs and vampires. Dinosaurs – because they are doomed to perish and vampires – because they give you nothing in return for sucking your pecuniary blood.

BookChums interviews celebrated author Sam Vaknin

                                                Post by: BookChums

April 23, 2012, Pune, India: BookChums interviewed Sam Vaknin, editor, columnist, psychologist, financial advisor & consultant, and author of the popular book, Malignant Self-love: Narcissism Revisited. This book is a treatise on narcissism and explores the depth of the Narcissistic Personality Disorder and how individuals afflicted with this disorder tend to abuse others; thereby destroying relationships. In this witty and crisp interview, he described his writings and interests.

Vaknin discussed his need to ‘garner attention’ and how it is both the ‘fuel’ in which he thrives and the ‘drug’ to which he is ‘thoroughly addicted’. He also traced his journey as a writer; as a child, he slogged to ‘merely survive’ until he discovered the ‘omnipotence of the word’. He added that via ‘syllables’, ‘I was able to motivate others to do my bidding; to induce emotions; to draw attention to myself; to generate shared fantasies; to make a generous living; and to get out of harm’s way. It was nothing short of magic’. He described pathological narcissism as a narcissist’s false-self projection to shirk away from hurt, abuse, and dejection. The false-self is ‘perfect’ and it is everything a victim is not and his book reveals that narcissists are identifiable and once identified, they can be manipulated too. Therefore it illustrates a note of optimism to the victims of all narcissists.

Sam Vaknin also described his love for watching movies, reading thrillers bordering on the pulp, and writing. He spoke about the importance of self publishing to aspiring writers and keeping writing short and simple.

A new LCWR resource is now available on the LCWR website. The resource, An
Invitation to Systems Thinking: An Opportunity to Act for Systemic Change,
was developed by the LCWR Global Concerns Committee as a tool for using a
systems approach to decision-making about issues both internal and external
to the congregation, e.g., governance, mergers, formation, retirement, as
                                                well as justice issues.

The publication reflects the developments in the understanding of critical
thinking and the complex nature of contemporary reality. As noted in one of
the publication's articles by Gertrude Foley, SC, "... systems thinking will
prevent us from unconsciously employing the same mental models that are
causing the problems that we want to solve."

The material in the publication is divided into two main parts: a general
overview of the nature of systems thinking and a practical application of
systems thinking to two sample cases. The resource also includes a worksheet
to facilitate practice with this approach, as well as bibliographic
                                                material.
