I can't offer much in the way of finishing. All I've ever seamed is a hat!

What about the three needle bind off? Mary Ellen says she uses that for sweaters a lot. I'd be interested in learning more about that.

Mary Pat, I would love to learn the i-cord techniques, but if I'm the only one, we can wait until I've got a project going and you can show me then.

Julie

The topic for this Saturday is finishing.

If you have any questions about a finishing technique please post it and we'll see if someone will teach it.  Jane from our Wilderness Perk group attended Stitches West and I asked her to demo something that she learned there.  She said she would even share some hand outs.

Please let me know if there is any interest in learning the applied I-Cord and/or the attach I-Cord.  I can demo this but if you would also like to try it  ring a piece of knitting about two inches long with about 20 stitches still on the needle.  Also, bring a four inch square of knitting that is bound off.  If no one posts an interest in doing this - I won't go to the trouble of knitting up examples.

I will also bring two books from my library that I think are good finishing references.  "The Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques" by Nancie M. Wiseman and "I Hate to Finish Sweaters Guide to Finishing Sweaters" by Janet Szabo.  If anyone else has books in their library that they like to use for finishing techniques please bring them along.

Hope of see a big group there Saturday.  As always please come for lunch and knitting even if you have no interest in the topic.

I will ask Mary Ellen if she is coming Saturday and ask her to show the three needle bind off.  If she isn't I'll show it.  Do actually practice on this bring along a two pieces of knitting about 2 inches long and about ten to twenty stitches left on the needles.  Remember with the three needle bind off you need three needles the same size.    When doing straight knitting on circular needles I often wrap half so half the stitches are on each side then use a third needle to bind off - clear as mud?  I will show you.

I would be happy to lead a discussion on how to pick up sts around neck edges to work a collar. I hate it when patterns say “pick up 56 sts along neck edge” because that tells you nothing of how to know where to pick them up, and once you pick up what seems right to you, it never matches what they say. I’ve come up with my own formula for picking up the correct amount of sts for various edges (which I would be happy to share), but I would love to hear how others handle this as well (as I by no means consider myself an authority on this topic).

I am working a jacket for myself right now where I am using the i-cord for all edges (in fact, I will probably be working on the i-cord when we get together Saturday). I can bring my swatch showing various ways of doing it (while knitting and knitting it while binding off and knitting it onto the finished edges – all three are shown on the humble little swatch floating around my knitting bag at the moment). So I would be happy to provide this project and my swatch as examples to save Mary Pat the trouble of knitting them up (unless she knows of other ways of doing it that I have not mentioned) and to participate in a discussion of this technique as well.

By End of March - Online Details about Knit & Crochet Shows!

Details will appear in late March at www.KnitAndCrochetShow.com

Descriptions of the classes available in Manchester are online now! TKGA WILL MAIL KNIT & CROCHET SHOW REGISTRATION BROCHURES TO YOUR GUILD TO SHARE AT YOUR GUILD MEETING. Let us know (
TKGA@...) how many brochures you need for your meeting (limited availability). Online registration and brochures will be available in March.

Guilds: Merge the Fun of Ballgames and Knitting with Stitch N' Pitch!

Never again leave your knitting at home while you sit in the stands to cheer on your favorite ball team. With Stitch N' Pitch you can do both and be among fellow knitters, to boot!

Is the game exciting? You'll knit faster. Is the game slow? You're not missing a thing, while accomplishing more on your knitting project.

Stitch N' Pitch is all about congregating with other knitters in a section of the stands. The ball teams sell tickets on certain days for Stitch N' Pitch sections. Needle art surprises and freebies come with the tickets, thanks to The National NeedleArts Association and local retailers. And there is always fun!

Stitch N' Pitch is in high gear, having gotten its start last year as part of The National NeedleArts Association (TNNA). TNNA has worked hard behind the scenes to set up Stitch N' Pitch arrangements with 23 national teams and local retailers and guilds. Visit the Stitch N' Pitch Web site - www.StitchNPitch.com -for a list of teams that offer Stitch N' Pitch dates and tickets (Arizona, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Colorado, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New York , Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Saint Louis, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Tampa Bay, Texas, Toronto, Washington, etc.) Then go directly to the listed team (do a Web search or pick up the phone) and tell them you want to buy Stitch N' Pitch tickets for their Stitch N' Pitch game date. It's that simple! Buy as a group or individually. Plan a bus trip! Add the Stitch N' Pitch calendar to your guild newsletter.

While you're on the Stitch N' Pitch Web site, be sure to click on the photo gallery, and especially on the link to "what the media has been saying."   It will give you a good idea of how the event works. You can tell local press to come and cover your guild at Stitch N' Pitch! Stitch N' Pitch is the perfect opportunity for your local guild to make knitting in public look like so much fun that others will want to learn how and will want to join your guild.

On the Stitch N' Pitch Web site, you can sign up to receive a Stitch N' Pitch Fan newsletter.

For additional involvement, contact info@.... For example, through this e-mail TNNA can help you find out how to connect with local retailers who will be at the game at Stitch N' Pitch teaching tables. Ask the retailer if your guild members can help teach and hand out guild brochures. This can give your guild a high profile among both new and experienced knitters.

In short, Stitch N' Pitch is a ball!  Start now to promote it to your guild members, get your tickets and get involved!

Hi Lincoln Knitters all:

I'll bring veggies and dip on Saturday, and my newest project, which just happens to be green, and which has a "finished" (started) edge using crocheted cast-on. That was new to me. It's lovely. See you Saturday!

Christy - your BSS is adorable.  I saw Mary Ellen's last night and she is going to bring it on Saturday.  She had a nice twist to her; so I will be fun to have her sweater  posted too.

How many more BSS's are out there?

Hi everyone. Sorry, I've been house-hunting in Michigan, so I
haven't been online for a few days. I'm going to show the short-row
technique that you can use to eliminate that "stair-step" effect when
shaping collars and shoulders on a sweater. They gave us handouts
and I will bring copies of those, too.

Where is the meeting Saturday? I need directions, as I've only been
to Wilderness Perk.

Jane (and all others who are joining us for the first time on Saturday):

We meet at the clubhouse at the Colony Apartments at S. 40th St. and Faulkner Drive.  From the intersection of Old Cheney and 40th, come south through the light at Duxhall and turn right at the next street which is Faulkner.  The second driveway is the entrance to the apartment complex (there's a brick sign).  Come straight up the drive and the clubhouse will be directly in front of you.  Parking lot is on the right side of the clubhouse.  We'll be there at 12:00.  See you then!

Hi everyone. Sorry, I've been house-hunting in Michigan, so I
haven't been online for a few days. I'm going to show the short-row
technique that you can use to eliminate that "stair-step" effect when
shaping collars and shoulders on a sweater. They gave us handouts
and I will bring copies of those, too.

Where is the meeting Saturday? I need directions, as I've only been
to Wilderness Perk.

Here is an interesting site on an KAL for the BSS sweater.  The variations are just amazing.

I also found the pattern for Ann's Mitered Square afghan very interesting.

Hi all,

Attached are three ideas for our logo. I will print and bring them tomorrow. Liz, please add this to our agenda.

Once we pick a logo, I will get the business cards produced. (I can also do that flyer for Threads, Mary Pat.)

Thanks!

Hi Julie,

Thanks for doing all this art work.  I like the second design too.  Christy, Heather  I agree this would look neat on a T-Shirt or knitting tote - not so sure about the tattoo - I think 1 or 3 would be a better tattoo.  I don't think I'll get a tattoo not that there is anything wrong with them!  I also think that 2 would look good on the top of a flyer.

Something to consider - we got some mail from the Omaha group and it looks like they are using a "Husker Red" in their logo.  So I think we need to decide if we want to use red too - or select another color.  Heather if you don't know "Husker Red" yet it won't be long before you get it!

I know this is a really old post, but I just got back from Minnesota and I am just now reading it. I attempted to knit a sweater using the continental style and my stitches are so loose that the resulting fabric looked awful. And my wrist bothered my very much--not while I was knitting--but later. I am hopeful to make the next Wilderness Perk knitting group, so I will watch all of you "continental knitters" and see if I can figure out what I am doing wrong. I do think it would be much faster if I ever got the hang of it.

You know, it might just be using different muscles. I tried the combination method because my wrists were getting easily fatigued with holding Mirabella. The combination method is supposed to be easier on the wrists, but I found it more uncomfortable than what I was doing before.

Maybe it's like riding a bike at the gym for months and months and then switching to the treadmill. Your still using your same muscles, just in a different way. That's what makes them sore.

I just wanted to add for Joanne's sake that knittinghelp.com has a
great video of continental knitting that she can check out before we
get together again. I learned from watching it. Before that, I threw
the yarn, albeit very, very slowly.

Either that, or she can come see me one Saturday afternoon when it's
nice out, and we can sit on my front porch swing like the knitting
fools we are and I'll teach her then and there. 'Cause you know
Milford isn't that far from Seward... <poke poke>

I originally learned how to throw, then re-taught myself how to knit continental. Last July I switched over to combination. At first my wrists hurt really bad with combination…and I had the same opinion of it as you, Julie…that it might be just getting used to it, but once I figured out the correct hand motions (not just getting the yarn on the needle), I have much less trouble with wrist pain because it’s actually a lot less movement than continental. I would be happy to sit next to you and show you what it was that I discovered I was doing wrong. I’m hoping to be there Wednesday night this week - maybe we can work on it then?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone in Seward knows the lady who raises parakeets
& lovebirds? I bought one of her lovebirds 2 1/2 years ago from Earl
May, here in Lincoln. She is my precious baby. I'm looking to get
another one, but I don't know her name. Does anyone know who she is?

Christy - last time I was at knitting group, you said your husband
might be interested in a Lego Mindstorms set. I have (finally) found
all the components. It's version 1.5, with all the software, plus a
webcam. Let me know if you're interested. I think $50 would be about
right, since it's an older version.
