The purpose of the leo-strauss list is to provide a forum for
thoughtful discussion of the ideas and works of Leo Strauss. For
extended slow readings of Strauss's works I have created a
separate list called "strauss-reading."
Leo Strauss was an important and influential political
philosopher. He was also one of the greatest teachers of his
time. What he aspired to teach, more than anything else, was a
new way of reading, a way of reading that makes old books come
alive. (The idea of what I call "Slow reading" indebted to
Strauss and some of his students, although it may not be exactly
the same thing that Strauss was teaching. For a brief discussion
of what I mean by "slow reading," please see my essay at
http://www.freelance-academy.org/slowread.htm.)
This is one of a group of lists hosted by The Free Lance Academy,
whose main purpose is to create opportunities for serious,
committed intellectual inquiry outside the university, primarily
by means of online media such as internet mailing lists. For the
names of other lists in this group, search on the relevant
keywords listed below.
In the belief that the most effective way to learn something is
to teach it, another of the principal aims of The Free Lance
Academy is to provide opportunities for teaching, especially for
people who might not otherwise have such an opportunity. If you
would like to become a discussion leader of this list or any
other list hosted by The Free Lance Academy, please contact Lance
Fletcher, the President of The Free Lance Academy, at:
lance@interactive.net.
Keywords: The Free Lance Academy, freelance, freelance-academy,
philosophy, slow reading, Leo Strauss, political philosophy,

Re: Darwinian Natural Right
Dear Mr. Gillis, There is an ambiguity or a dual treatment of eternal recurrence. But I think the shading is slightly different. As a scientific hypothesis

Re: Darwinian Natural Right
There seems to be an inherent ambiguity in the concept of eternal recurrence in Nietzsche. Sometimes he writes about it as if it were true or a fact. Other

Re: Darwinian Natural Right
Dear Mr. Pehme, As you know. evolutionists typically solve this problem by means of petitio principii - we know it must have happened, because here we are!
