Hello Michael,

You didn't mention a scale, but in HO (and any smaller scale) the EASY solution for vertical curves is to use 3/4" plywood for the subgrade. Let the subgade make its own transition from level track to the desired grade, as it can't make a vertical curve so severe that it will cause trouble. No calculations are needed – a good thing since I was an English major!

I have to agree with the Aussie. 3/4" plywood for vertical curves or subroadbed is a bit of overkill. Plywood does have considerable bending strength...
