Here's a good question to get this list started.

Thanks, Craig.
The Ancestral File is a CD-ROM database that has seven
CDs at present but they are planning an upgrade later
this year that will have more, possibly totalling
nine CDs, probable release date may be September 1998.
They are part of FamilySearch, which is at your local
FHC.
You just get on the computer and when the FamilySearch
menu comes up, you select 'Ancestral File'.
On entering Ancestral File, a search screen will come up. You can
search by individual or by parents. You
can filter by location (key to hit is in tabs at top)
or by date range. Filtering will slow down the searching as it takes
longer to find target info by
filtering.
Once an index screen comes up, select a name that looks
right or close. Hit the function key for the type of
info you want Ancestral File to find and it will display.
Let us know of other questions you have once you have
tried the basic search. And thanks for the question as
that is what the LDS_Genealogy list is all about!

The most probable reason is that those who wanted to
bail out of the list (and prematurely at that) forgot
they had to relogin to Onelist to unsubscribe.
Thanks for sharing the concern, the list is just barely
getting started and so the problems that have been
encountered are just par for the course.

Hi all.
I just returned from looking at my first microfilm order at the FHC. It
was the Index to the Baptisms for the Dead 1893-1967; Heir Indexes
1893-1960. I was hoping for information on an ancestor which is listed
in the IGI without parents, but had a relative's name. This ancestor
was not in the index, but this relative was. I don't know the relation
of this relative and it is the first time I have run across this last
name thus far. I have copied down the information in the index. It
gives book numbers and presumably page numbers.
Is this presumption correct? What can I do with this information? (I
wasn't able to get on the computers at the FHC today. I wanted to check
the IGI some more.)
Thanks for any help you knowledgeable people can give me.

Hello All
Does anyone know of the Abbey of Bec particularly in relation to returns
of a manor in Dorset of 1248?- location (apart from the obvious,)?
history?
It seems a proto-PATCH resided there in 1273. I'd like to find out if
any of his offspring are still about!-well, I've heard the vows weren't
so compelling in those days.
Any PATCH information of interest.
regards,

Did you check the Ancestral File? The LDS Church
prepared a number of royal genealogies and even did
some of the research some years back. That info
should be on the Ancestral File now.
BTW: While the LDS Church has discontinued its
medieval research unit, you might want to check with
the Ancestral File office at the address you send your
submissions to in regards to anything from pre-1500
royal lines on account of duplicated work and other
errors that have crept in since they did that project.

On Monday, April 6th in #GenealogyForum, the area of interest
is Colonial America before 1700. If you have ancestors from
that time frame and that location, join us to exchange
surnames and information. Visit in 'real time' with people researching the
same location and years as you are. You may
just meet a cousin or two!
Meeting is scheduled for 8 PM to 10:30 PM Eastern Time (USA).
You are welcome to stay online longer, of course.
The format for the meeting is 'open'. The purpose is to
exchange research surnames, ideas, URLs and information.
The only channel rules are that you address people by the
nickname they are wearing at the time and courtesy to all
present. Try to include everyone in your discussions, they
MAY be a relative!
If you have never been on IRC, instructions for downloading
and setting up the software can be found on our webpage at:
http://cust2.iamerica.net/pscobb/
The Link is: HOW TO JOIN IRC
You should download and setup several days before and visit the channel so
you will understand the program a little and feel comfortable with
environment.

I have noticed that alot of subscribers want to get
off the list.
Perhaps it is because of all the usual startup problems
or something but this list has yet to do the good that
I believe it will do. Much has yet to be said concerning the LDS
Church, Genealogy, FamilySearch,
Family History Centers, and other things that will
help regarding genealogy generally, especially in
understanding the LDS Church's resources.
As an aside, Onelist is no longer sending list messages
in HTML so more people can now use Onelist using older
email programs. The ads are now in plain text (you may
have already seen this) as well as your messages.
Stay with the list, there is much more to come!

And now you're cluttering up everyone else's mailbox with the same
stupidity. It's a pot/kettle thing. Refrain from cluttering up MY mailbox
with YOUR stupid replies. Outside of you I received a very civil reply
explaining what had occurred. Did you send Sandy a nasty reply berating
her for a mistake her e-mailer made? Maybe you should learn some
relaxation techniques, learn how to use a delete key, and leave the rest of
us alone when you're feeling cranky.

Since LDS Temples play such a major role in genealogy
generally, especially with the data from the work done
in them going to the IGI, I thought I'd relay the
following to the list:
The Deseret News at its Church News site has posted a
very good article, with pictures, of some of the
temples now under construction with a full status
report.
Go to http://www.ldschurchnews.com/ and look for
'Cover Story' and click on that.
To the right of that, there is a nice partial picture
of the rendering for the Billings Montana Temple.
The Cochabamba Bolivia Temple rendering is with the
article along with several pictures of temples now
under construction showing all the construction work
that is going on.
This article will remain online at that site until
next Saturday morning, April 4.

WHAT DID YOU DO???
Carline ---
No, you cannot get the data on-line. You have to write to NARA, hire a
researcher, or go to NARA or one of the Regional Archives and peruse the
films yourself. However, if a person was BORN in TN, that's when he/she
came to the US. Now if you are interested in finding when the person's
PARENTS came to the US, that's a different matter. To find the parents,
you'd have to do the same thing I advised Dick and Cindy: Search the
index films for their naturalization record; then write for a copy of
the certificate. Then you'd have to take the information from the
certificate and search the passenger arrival records to find them (if
you're lucky). Another route is to research them in Filby's Passenger
Arrivals and Ships Lists series.

For a civil marriage, probably at 18; at 16 doubtful. For a Catholic
church wedding, extremely doubtful in either his parish OR hers.

You're right about the banns. And another thing to take into account is
the parish priest. Can't you just imagine this "older woman" and this
kid coming to the priest and saying "Father, we wish to marry?" He would
have sent them packing, if he didn't call the police first, figuring
rightly that the kid was a runaway.
> Could they have had a Church wedding back then in either place or are

Seriously doubtful that they had "benefit of clergy." In those days, I
seriously doubt they cold have even gotten a civil wedding. Of course,
even then there were places like Elkridge, MD, Reno, NV or even
Rockland, ME (that's where my paternal gp's ran off to) that wren't too
particular. At any rate, it's very doubtful they had a church wedding,
even a Church of Ireland one.
