My daughter-in-law, who is from Taiwan, uses PAF (the Chinese version).  (As you probably are aware, there are different languages available on PAF; she just selects Mandarin.)  Her laptop is set up with Chinese characters, so it works well with PAF.  She doesn't think you can use Chinese characters in the PAF English version.

I don't know if this helps; you are right; the records there go way back - she goes back at least to the 1100s.

Subject: [lds_genealogy] genealogy software to accommodate pinyin Chinese characters?

hello Genealogists:

I have a Chinese American friend that is looking for genealogy software that will accommodate Chinese pinyin characters.  Another (Chinese American) friend uses "Twin Bridges" software for the Chinese characters and MS Excel and Word to document his family lineage (which goes back over 100 generations!).  I don't know how he does it.  Cumbersome at best if you ask me.  The Chinese characters are very important for documenting the proper names; writing them phonetically is not really acceptable since they are pronounced differently in different dialects.  (For those that don't know this, the Chinese language is written with the same characters throughout the country but pronounced very differently in each dialect like Cantonese and Mandarin.)

Can you copy/paste from Twin Bridges to Family Tree Maker in the "Notes" section or another genealogy software?  I'd have to buy it to try that (Family Tree Maker is what I recommended to my friend since I use it) but wanted to see if anyone has something that accommodates different languages and/or characters (not just Chinese, I'm sure there are others that could use this with family from countries that use letters/characters not in the American language.)

Thanks in advance for any help or recommendations,
Pam

Subject: How to Unlock 'Locked' ordinances
klui5
Offline Offline
Send Email Send Email

This is the process to resolve ordinances several names assigned to yourself and a lock symbol appears beside your name. To resubmit these ordinances and assign them to the temple, or to re-assign them so someone else can do them, follow these instructions:

1. If the lock appears next to your name, then the ordinances are assigned to you and you have already printed a Family Ordinance Request or family ordinance card containing those ordinances.

To reassign the ordinances to the temple, you need to remove the individual from your temple ordinances list by clicking on the box on the left hand side of the screen. Then you will click on the box at the top of the list that says Remove.

You will then need to reserve the individual’s ordinances again, and then assign the ordinances to the temple. If possible, please destroy any previously printed duplicate family ordinance card or Family Ordinance Request.

2. After you reserve those ordinances you want done, indicate whether you want the temple to do the ordinances:

a. If you want the temple to do the ordinances, click OK
b. If you do not want to assign the ordinances to the temple click Cancel. You will return to the list of individuals you have submitted for temple ordinances, and the ordinances will still be reserved for you.
As the ordinances are completed and recorded, the ordinance dates appear in the individual’s details. After all of an individual’s ordinances are done, the system automatically removes him or her from the temple ordinances list.

You need to decide if you want to be sealed to your Mom and Stepdad. Was
there a reason that you were not sealed to them before she died? Be sure
this is something you do because you want to, not just because your
stepfather wants to.

About the PS, I don't think this is an issue here, as it appears that the first marriage and divorce took place before the Mom joined the Church.

However, IF it were a BIC issue, the sealing stays in effect for children, even if the sealing of the parents is cancelled.  There can only be one sealing of a living child.

Presumably you are already endowed? Presumably your biological parents were not married to each other in the temple, and you were not born under their covenant?

Fill out/print out a family group record which reflects your step father's info as husband including ordinances, your mother's information as wife, including death date and ordinances. Reflect you as their child, with your information, including ordinances.

Print out three copies, make an appointment with your temple and your stepfather with someone to serve as your mother, and go. :)

P.S. If your parents were married in the temple and you were Born under their Covenant (it's the wording 'civil divorce' that makes me wonder), you can forget everything I just said. You would need First Presidency approval to have that sealing dissolved before you can go any further.

She is listed 2 different was I know one is probably a nick name but
do not know which it is. We have a Copy of a Book Giddings In America
The 1st 6 Generations. Anyway in it says that Perry Clarke Giddings
was born 1851 and in 1879 he married a Jennie Moore. We find her on
the 1880 Census and she is 18 and his wife. I got 3 newspaper articles
from Quincy and in one of them it says that Jennie was born October
21,1861 in Clayton Adams County Illinois. And she left Perry many
times through the years. They had 8 children one being my grandmother
Bertha Mae Giddings. In 1900 she left him with 2 of their children
ages 6 and 11 and walked from Maywood to Durham and was sent by train
to Mount Sterling and she worked for a John Stover in a boarding house
until she killed herself on May 1,1911. We are trying to find out who
her parents were and if she had any brothers or sisters. And Help
would be so great.

Hi! I'm looking for family members no matter where they live (or
lived) now that are Delora's. The name is sometimes spelled: DeLora,
De Lora. Originated American in NYC

The Delora's came from Bonn Germany, then settled
NYC/Flushing/Greenpoint and settled early in Upstate NY then spread
out. Any info or if you are a relative that would be great. Trying to
do my geneology and recently met a bunch of Delora's in the church and
living in LA where I live now - is fabulous. Want to meet more family
members in the church or outside to do my charts etc.

Also looking for the other side (Maternal) Schultz originally from
Berne Switzerland lived in NYC (Flushing, my grandfather worked at the
Brooklyn Navy Yard) don't know how many brothers and sisters - I think
6 so don't know much about them but in about 1947-48 moved to the
Hudson Valley in Upstate NY. Schultz lived in Brooklyn first
(Greenpoint I think) then moved to Flushing.

Anyone have anything or need more information to confirm, please let
me know.

I greatly appreciate it would like to meet some relatives
active/inactive/non members but who may even have known any of them by
hearing stories.

Your help would be a great blessing!

Duane has been an active member in Toastmaster International
organization serving in various leadership roles. In his first year
he won the "Humorous Speech Competition" taking him to the region
level. In his second year he served as Distinguished Club President
then elected as the next year Area Governor where he was
distinguished once more. In 2000-2001, Duane was elected District 15
Governor leading the five-state wide district to "Distinguished"
honor. He also received the highest educational level as
Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Award.

It was in Toastmasters that Duane discovered his love of writing.
Because of the skills he developed while writing speeches and short
stories for the numerous presentations he had to give, Duane dared
the formidable task of writing not one but numerous books. The first
published being Jacob's Hollow. It can be said that his writing
career started in Toastmasters.

The First Thousand Years of British Names

Introduction
The title of this article is somewhat of a misnomer -- a more accurate one might be "The first thousand years of written names in Brythonic-speaking Britain" -- but that seemed a bit unwieldy. It will cover the names of Roman Britain, and names in Wales from the Old Welsh period. (Technically the Old Welsh period extended to the middle of the 12th century, but a thousand-year span made a nice, clear cut-off point.)

Table of Contents

Old Welsh Names

Bibliography

Appendices: Rather than lump all the names together in a single list, I
have found it convenient to separate them according to source.
Appendix I - Roman Names Containing British Elements
Appendix II - Some British Names in Roman Inscriptions
Appendix III - 5th to 10th Century Names from Jackson LHEB
Appendix IV - Name Patterns from the Book of Llandav
Appendix V - Given names from the Llandav charters
Appendix VI - A special consideration of some Irish inscriptions in early
   Britain

Medieval (and Other Historic) Welsh Topics
<http://heatherrosejones.com/medwalesmenu.html>

FAQs for Medieval (and Earlier) Re-creation

A series of short articles based on topics that I've repeatedly found myself answering questions on. My questions have primarily come from members of the Society for Creative Anachronism, but most of the answers are applicable to other groups as well.

A Self-Taught Course in Medieval Welsh

This is an in-progress set of graded lessons for learning the Welsh language of roughly the 13-14th centuries, although advanced topics will cover some earlier material.

Some Data on the Use and Nature of Tents in Medieval Wales

An article discussing textual evidence for the nature and purpose of tents and other temporary dwellings in medieval Wales.

A Metrical Medieval Welsh Translation of Some SCA Oaths of Fealty

This is only really relevant to the Society for Creative Anachronism. My attempts at some poetic translations of ceremonial texts.

Period Welsh Models for SCA Households and the Nomenclature Thereof
An essay intended for people in the Society for Creative Anachronism who want to model either their household or their household name on historic models. An extensive analysis of the structure names of of geographic, political, and social entities in medieval Wales.

Onomastics (the study of names)
<http://heatherrosejones.com/namemenu.html>

Content Sample:

This is going to be a very exciting part of my site ... as soon as I get through the mechanics of putting it together. Currently it includes a number of articles I've written on various specific topics. Eventually it will also be the gateway to my database of medieval Welsh personal names.

General Articles
How to Document a Name (to within an inch of its life)

This article specifically concerns the name research and registration process in the Society for Creative Anachronism (although I've been told that it has some use for putting together a logical argument in general).

The Tale of Tangwystyl: or It's Your Name and You Can Change If You Want To

An essay in answer to SCA members who think it's impossible to change their persona names.

Celtic Langauges and Cultures
Gaulish
Name Constructions in Gaulish

An article focusing on the structure and grammar of Gaulish names in those examples where we have more than a single name element recorded. Includes a discussion of the relevant grammar as well as issues of Greek and Latin influences on how names are recorded.

Brythonic
The First Thousand Years of British Names

This is a general survey of Brythonic names from the Roman era up through around 1000 CE, although the later information is specifically drawn from Welsh sources. Much of this material would be better served by more focused and in-depth articles on the specific sources.
