In the previous lesson the NCS opened the CW net and took check-ins, both with
and without traffic. Now it's time for the NCS to play "traffic cop" and start
directing the flow. Here is another Q-code plus an abbreviation:
QNV - Make contact with (callsign) on this frequency then move to (frequency)
and send traffic for _______
GG (or G) - Going
The traffic that was listed included several pieces from KA3OCS:
2 Massachusetts
1 New York
1 Norfolk, VA
1 for KV4AN
and one listed by KV4AN:
1 QNC
The NCS may choose to have the QNC sent first so that all net stations can copy
it, and if so will call as follows:
AN (NCS sends last two letters of KV4AN's callsign)
HR (KV4AN may respond with R, HR, AN, or just a dit or two)
KV4AN QNC NW K
R VN DE KV4AN and then he proceeds with the announcement or formal message,
whichever it happens to be. When he has finished, the NCS, knowing that KV4AN
can take Norfolk traffic and also that KA3OCS has traffic specifically for
KV4AN, may send the two stations off frequency to pass that traffic as follows:
OCS
R
KA3OCS QNV KV4AN UP 3 U 3 NORFOLK ES KV4AN K
The NCS has told KA3OCS to contact KV4AN on the net frequency – to make sure
they can copy each other – and then to move up 3 kHz and pass the Norfolk, VA
traffic and the traffic that KA3OCS has for KV4AN (probably a net report).
KA3OCS responds by calling KV4AN:
KV4AN DE KA3OCS UP 3 U 3 K
DE KV4AN UP 3 GG (KV4AN responds and says he's going)
GG (KA3OCS says he's going)
R TU (NCS thanks the two stations)
With the QNC already cleared and the Norfolk and KV4AN traffic being passed off
the net frequency, the NCS can now turn his attention to the out-of-state
traffic - and we'll cover that in the next lesson.
A NOTE ON SENDING STATIONS OFF-FREQUENCY
The NCS needs to know that the frequencies he/she is sending stations to are
clear and this can be accomplished by the NCS sending AS (wait) and tuning up
the band to check, or by the NCS having a 2nd receiver to check off-net
frequencies. It can also be handled if the NCS has a panadapter on his receiver
or has a transceiver with a built-in spectrum display, such as an Icom
IC-756PRO, as this allows the NCS to see at a glance what activity exists up and
down the band and assign off-frequency slots accordingly.
