Dear KSW friends,

Kearny Street Workshop will stop using yahoogroups at the end of 2009. We have started our own online community on Ning. Here, you can find the same content we have been sharing through yahoogroups: event invites, job opportunities, artist calls and more.

Plus, you are able to interact with us and with each other by joining us at kearnystreet.ning.com. It costs nothing to join and you can create your own profile, upload your artwork, comment, talk about events. Take a look!

You can find "Sign Up" at the top right corner of the screen to join our community. Please make the move from yahoogroups to kearnystreet.ning.com so we can connect with you and help our community grow.

Hope to see you soon!

KSW

The San Francisco Hep B Free campaign is a collaboration of over thirty diverse public and private interests working together to eliminate the transmission of hepatitis B, with a special emphasis on the Asian and Pacific Islander population who bear a disproportionate rate of chronic hepatitis B infection.

Hepatitis B is a disease caused by infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Infection with HBV can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, liver failure, and liver cancer. 80% of liver cancer worldwide is caused by HBV infection.

Asian Americans tend to be infected at a much higher rate, with 1 in 10 Asians chronically infected with hepatitis B, compared to 1 in 1000 in the general population. Without treatment or monitoring, 1 in 4 of these individuals will die from liver cancer or liver failure.

In California alone, liver cancer is the #1 leading cause of cancer deaths among Laotian American men, the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths among Cambodian and Vietnamese men, the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths among Chinese and Korean men, and the 5th leading cause of deaths among Filipino men.

The SF Hep B Free Steering Committee is made up of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, Asian Liver Center at Stanford University, and AsianWeek Foundation.

Subject:FW: ABL-SF Special Message to our Community Partners - Annual Holiday Celebration on November 19, 2009

As all of you know, our local Asian Pacific American community offers a wonderfully broad and diverse array of programs and services to the San Francisco Bay Area, and in recognition of that the Asian Business League of San Francisco (ABL-SF) has helped to promote them where appropriate. In fact, many of these great events have been ones hosted by you, our community partners, and as most of you know, we have been enthusiastic in sharing these great events with our ABL-SF membership.

Now that 2009 is in its final quarter with the year-end holiday season just around the corner, ABL-SF proudly announces its Annual Holiday Celebration, which will take place on the evening of Thursday, November 19, 2009. We use this year-end event to celebrate our offerings of Leadership Forums and the longstanding Youth Program, as well as to salute the individual graduates of our highly-acclaimed You are the CEO Program! At the same time, though, we undertake this celebration in a festive atmosphere with good food and a fun social environment. For this year, the celebration will take place in the glorious Yank Sing Restaurant and its adjoining atrium, with entertainment provided in the form of Las Vegas-style casino games. Attached is copy of a promotional flyer highlighting the event.

I am sending this email to you, our community partners, with the hope that you can forward the attached information to your membership or constituency, as we are certain that many in your organization would find the event of interest. In recognition of your promotion of this event on our behalf, we are offering a $5.00 discount to our Non-Member price for those who register through your organizations efforts. Simply advise your members and constituents to enter the special promotional code Partner2009 after accessing the registration page through the link in the attached flyer.

As your partner, ABL-SF is proud of all the success that many of you have garnered with your programs over the past year, and we hope that you can help us make our year-end event a successful one as well. Should any of you have any questions regarding the event or its promotion, please do not hesitate to contact me or any of my colleagues on the ABL-SF Board of Directors, including those copied on this email.

THE ARTISTS

Genny Lim is a native San Franciscan poet, performer, playwright, educator and cultural activist whose artistic vision strives to express the uniqueness and universality of her experience as the child of immigrant Chinese, deeply engaged in the civil rights and Asian American arts movement since the early 1970s. Her work has always been deeply informed by her commitment to social justice issues on many fronts. Her two books of poetry, Winter Place (1989, Kearny Street Workshop) and Child of War (2003, Kalamaku Press) have been widely recognized for defining a distinctive Asian American voice in the Bay Area and international literary landscape. Recently she toured Venezuela as a participant in the Second Annual World Poetry Festival in Caracas. Heraward-winning play about Angel Island immigrants,Paper Angels aired on American Playhouse in 1995 and the anthology she co-authored, Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, brought national attention to institutional racism against immigrants. Bitter Cane, a second play set in the Hawaiian sugar plantations of the 1920s, has also been published and performed nationally and overseas. She also been commissioned to create a libretto for Jon Jang’s Immigrant Suite; and poetry for Francis Wong’s, Shanghai 1948. Her work has been featured on the PBS series, The United States of Poetry; and KQED's feature, San Francisco Chinatown.

Actor/Musician/Dancer Tsering Dorjee (Bawa) graduated from the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA), Dharamsala, India in Tibetan music, opera and sacred/monastic dance in 1994. In 2000, he completed his Masters degree in advanced Tibetan performing arts. Since then he has toured worldwide performing Tibetan music and dance and has acted in numerous films including the year 2000 Oscar-nominated film Himalaya.

Sensei Melody Takata is a taiko artist (Japanese drumming) and dancer/choreographer trained in classical Japanese dance. In her 20+ year career she has engaged in the interpretation of traditional pieces as well as created new works in the tradition. She has further explored the role of innovation as a means to advance the tradition as living culture, experimenting both with interdisciplinary integration of traditional art disciplines (taiko, folk dance, folk music, ozashiki music, classical dance) as well as the use of contemporary forms such as modern dance, spoken word and improvised music. www.gentaiko.com

Sri Vishnu Tattva Das is recognized as one of India's prominent male Odissi dancers and choreographers, and has received acclaim for his performances throughout India, Italy, Canada, and the U.S. He has presented hundreds of solo performances, lecture-demonstrations, and master classes. He has also collaborated, choreographed and performed with many dance artists in India and the U.S. Vishnu is the founder-director of Odissi Vilas: Sacred Dance of India, formally known as Sri~Krishnasraya, and is a founding member of Kala Sri Sangha, a group of professional Odissi dancers in the San Francisco Bay Area whose interest is to collectively promote Odissi dance.

In this debut Kenji Liu explores the interweavings of migration, love,
memory and mourning in an autobiography of poems spanning four years.
Beginning with the untimely death of his mother, this collection
contemplates the difficult task of transforming one's relationship
with the dead and the renewal of life that can accompany it.

Praise for You Left Without Your Shoes:

“From the shreds of grief and displacement, Kenji Liu has woven whole
cloth. These are exquisite poems, sculpted and flowing, the lines
meant to be caressed by the reader’s eyes, the words read aloud for
the ears. You don’t have to try to remember this poet’s name " Kenji
Liu will, without a doubt, in time establish himself as one of our
major American poets.”
- Patricia Y. Ikeda, featured in the award-winning documentary film,
Between the Lines: Asian American Women's Poetry

“Beautiful seems too cliche a word for these poems that are original
and effused with love, and memory and loss and ties that link one
generation to the next regardless of time and circumstance. Kenji Liu
artfully opens up your heart with these lucid poems.”
- Opal Palmer Adisa, latest collection, I Name Me Name

“In You Left Without Your Shoes, Kenji Liu engages and entangles his
reader in a conversation, a testament, an ocean, a desert of memory, a
flight, a witness towards the survival of loss and what lies beyond.
These multi-layered poems, tender and resilient, fly towards the
possible.”
- Ching-In Chen, author of The Heart's Traffic

About the artists:

KENJI LIU is a 1.5 generation Japanese-born Taiwanese American
expatriate of New Jersey suburbia. Arising from his work as an
activist, educator and cultural worker, his writing explores the
politics of identity, migration, race, gender, memory, history,
mourning, joy and everyday small occurrences. Kenji’s poetry chapbook,
You Left Without Your Shoes, was published by Finishing Line Press
(2009). His writing has also appeared in Tea Party Magazine, Kartika
Review, and the 2009 Intergenerational Writer’s Workshop online

multi-genre full-length collection of poetry, prose and visual art.

Based in Oakland, AIMEE SUZARA is a Filipino-American
writer/performer, cultural worker and educator who has been writing

published in the NAACP-nominated Check the Rhyme: An Anthology of
Female Poets and Emcees (Lit Noire, 2007). Her poetry chapbook, the
space between, was published by Finishing Line Press in 2008. Suzara
has shared her passion for the intersection of arts, literacy and
education by teaching at Las Positas, Laney College, City College San
Francisco, and Kearny Street Workshop.

ALICE TONG is a singer, songwriter, artist, activist, social worker,
2nd generation Chinese-Taiwanese-American. Alice has a BA in

To me, making a tape is like writing a letter, explains Nick Hornby in his novel High Fidelity. There's a lot of erasing and rethinking and starting again. A good compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do.

Taking a cue from Hornby's writings about music, eight San Francisco Bay Area writers are gathering to read new work inspired by songs and musical artists. The writers will be relating tales of early obsessions with the boy-band New Kids on the Block, examining the particular flavor and psychology of mix-tapes, lending insight to Brian Eno, Quasi, and the Talking Heads, playing "meta-songs," and exploring the mysterious place where songs that have been forgotten now reside.

Please join us at Oakland Leaf, located in Oakland's Fruitvale neighborhood, for an evening of writing about song. The writers are:

Sadie Contini
Curt Douglas
Alisa Dodge
Cathlin Goulding
Kenji Liu
G Reyes
Ava Tong
Vickie Vertiz

BWAGAMOYO: THE FATHER
Part II of Migritude - An Epic Journey In Four Movements

http://oakopolis.org/gallery/2009/shailja.html

3 pm - 5 pm

$5 - $20 sliding scale

Special Guest Actor: Zac Drake

Audience Q and A follows performance.

Migritude reclaims and celebrates the dignity of outsider status.

The four works that make up the Migritude Cycle draw on the artist's Hindu spiritual heritage. Conceived as an "Epic Journey In Four Movements", Migritude references the earliest religious teaching imparted to Hindu children: that of the First Four Gods. The Hindu child is taught that her first god is her Mother. The second god is her Father. The third god is her Teacher. The fourth god is The Guest.

Part I of the Migritude Cycle, When Saris Speak (The Mother), is a 90-minute spoken word theatre show, which has toured internationally, and was selected for the 2007 season premiere of KQED's Spark! Arts and Culture Programme. Watch it here.

Part II of the Migritude Cycle addresses the second archetype in the Four Gods theme: The Father.

This work explores constructions of masculinity and race under colonialism. It examines how the architecture of Empire is codified on the bodies of men: brown, black, and white. How muscles can dismantle masculinities. How patriots become patriarchs. How daughters confront fathers.

The title, Bwagamoyo " draws on two Swahili words: Bwaga " to dump, and Moyo " heart. Bwagamoyo was the original name given to two specific locations on the Swahili Coast: the town in Tanzania where slaves were brought from the inland and held for shipping, and a small island in the Zanzibar archipelago that was a holding prison for slaves. Both are now known as Bagamoyo. The original Bwagamoyo was a chilling admonition to the kidnapped human beings to literally dump their hearts, meaning their humanity, at these spots, since they would no longer use or need them once they left as slave cargo. Bwagamoyo is an equally apt metaphor for the socialization of boys into the kinds of manhood shaped by colonial power.
