One day Troilanga Swami said to the young seeker Bijoy Krishna Goswami, "Look here, I shall have to initiate you."
Bijoy Krishna said, "I don't want to be initiated by you. You are so undivine. What you did in the Kali temple was so shocking to me."
Troilanga Swami said, "No, I have received an inner command from above. You have to be initiated by me. It is absolutely necessary for everyone to be initiated. If there is no initiation, then there can be no purification. You need purification in your life, and if you do not have this purification, there will be no God-realisation for you. I have got the command from within. Otherwise, I would be the last person to ask to initiate anybody."
When Bijoy Krishna heard these words, he fell at the Swami's feet and got initiation. It helped him considerably in his purification and expedited his spiritual journey. Eventually, Bijoy Krishna Goswami also became a very great spiritual Master.
Commentary:
Initiation is of paramount importance. The Master can initiate the seeker either outwardly or inwardly. But the traditional outer way, as part of a religious rite, is far less effective than the silence-initiation. In the silence-initiation, the Master offers a portion of his life-breath to the seeker for his ignorance-illumination and his delight-realisation. Initiation is purification. No purification, no perfection. No perfection, no satisfaction either on earth or in Heaven.
Here our selfless desires are hidden by selfish
ones. They are real, but they are covered by what is
false. Therefore whoever of our own departs from this
life, not one can ever be brought back before our
eyes. But all those we love, alive or departed, and
all things we desire but do not have, are found when
we enter that space within the heart; for there abide
all desires that are true, though covered by what is
false.

This is the photo of Swami Sri Yukteswarji which Swami Sadhanananda Giri Maharaj had referred to. It is not scannd from the book "Yoga - Its Mystery & Performing Art" but the photo is the same.
In this respect it is good to share my own experience also.
If one focusses his attention for a minute or so on the eyes of Swamiji - seen to be looking straight to the person on an ordinary look - His vision will actually be seen to be focussed towards the sky or above. He is also in Sambhabi Mudra.
Although a Sadguru is within us & talking & doing all activities like a common man - his real seat is far away from the mortal world. His eyes are always fixed above. So was that of Sri Yukteswarji too. Both of them are Sadguru & we can verify that so easily.
Religion is a very delicate subject. Excellent clothing, show-off,
doing worldly workings ---these are not at all religion. To become a
good self and all times do good thing for other living beings – this
is the true manifestation of religion. One have to sit alone in a
dark place, have to sense in himself, whether there is any guilty
feelings in him or, not. If he doesn't have any guilty consciousness
then it's okay. Telling a lie, violence, hating others, evil
thinking, jealousy etc. all the malefic intensions should be left.
Only after detaching oneself from these Tri-Tapas, one can realize
religion. Till the time one is not liberated from Tri-Tapa, there is
no other way to understand religion. Eventually God is the religion.

1. A Maha Purush never blow His own horn. By His work or, by any
other means He never establish His superiority.
2. A Maha Purush never humiliate others.
3. A Maha Purush never unnecessarily wastes His time. He always
remains absorbed in various kind of work which is beneficial to
soul / atma.
4. A Maha Purush always show kindness to all living beings. Grief of
human being, animal, bird, even trees touch Him. All the time He
experiences the sufferings of others as His own suffering. Never
become a source of trouble to others.
5. A Maha Purush always remains content in Himself. He never gets
agitated.
This story we heard from TC when a few of us – newly initiated disciples – were trying to praise him for his advancement state of Kriya.
The event occurred about ten years ago when Swami Sadhanananda Giri Maharaj was touring some sacred places in Himalaya with a few of his disciples. The place was Uttarkashi – a comparatively bigger town in UP from where different routes to different pilgrimages diverge.
In most of the places in Himalaya people are vegetarian. Only in places like Uttarkashi there are some non-veg restaurant. One of the disciples ( TC )traveling with Swamiji was non-veg & the rest were vegetarian. Swamiji does not prescribe immediate stoppage of non-veg foods for those habituated with such kind of foods before the initiation, but asks to reduce them gradually. By the practice of Kriya the disciple soon realizes which food is suitable for his living & performance of Kriya. He then himself switches over to vegetarian or least consumption of non-veg foods.
The disciples had managed to procure totally vegetarian meal for Swamiji – He does not even take onion or garlic which are considered in some parts of India as veg items. At the time of lunch TC taking non - neg items items decided to sit at a different table – away from Swamiji’s & those of the vegetarians. He thought that perhaps the smell of meat & eggs would cause some trouble to Swamiji who has never taken such things in His life.
Swamiji came to the dinner table & immediately asked who had decided to sit aloof.
The other disciples present there replied to Swamiji that it was TC who made separate arrangements for him & others. He immediately replied loudly, so that everyone can hear – "He is yet to attain a trace of ‘Vairagya’."
TC was very upset. Swamiji had really ‘puntured’ his reputation of being an advanced disciple in the eyes of others present there.
Swamiji next narrated the matter. Some one who has attained ‘Vairagya’ it maters nothing if some one is taking a veg or non-veg meal by his side. His mind is placed into the coveted placid state & remains concentrated into the inner hymn of ‘Omkar’. It matters nothing to him whether someone speaks good about him or bad. Only he & his Guru know his achievements & any kind of words of glory cannot touch him. He has crossed such insignificant material aspirations for which common people long for. When the mind is in such a state that minor incidences happening by his side act on his mind & distracts it towards such matters, he should be confident that he is yet to achieve the placid state of true ‘Vairagya’ – however great people may talk or preach about him or his advanced state of sadhana.
Here TC had underestimated Swamiji's state on mind. His mind is not moved by such minor incidences.
Concluding the story TC smiled to us. We soon realized how insignificant are those attempts to distract one's mind - placed at the lotus feet of His Guru, from where no one can allure it to a better place.
Our attempts were also futile in case with TC.
We are all very much eager to hear such praise & compliments from others. This a great driving force in the mortal world. When the Yogi can understand every moment how trivial this matter of public admiration is – he will cross one great hurdle in his path.
Here I present my personal experience at the Ashram on 1st of this month.
I took one email with me to the Ashram from one of our Guru brother in France where Swami Sadhanananda Giri Maharaj is scheduled to have a few days of retreat in August this year.
The email contained the new residential address of Swami Anandanandaji. I placed the printout of the email before Him & He asked me to write it down it on His diary as He was very busy.
By the time I was writing those words in His diary; Swamiji was answering a question from a pair of devotees visiting the Ashram for the first time. That answer we have already read from a post by Asis-da (Sadhana, Sunday, February 02, 2003).
Such magnificent was the explanation that my mind was mostly engaged listening to His words while writing down the address.
Both my writing & His explanation ended simultaneously.
Now He turned to me & said, “Check the address that you have written down again, may be there is a mistake. Your attention was always on the apples!” (A plate containing fruits which the devotees brought with them was placed before us a few minutes ago.)
He was now checking the first print of a book which is scheduled to be published on the day of Saraswatipuja i.e. on 6th Febriary.
The word that my attention was on the apples made me unhappy. I had checked the writing & only then I placed that before Him.
But I decided to check the address that I copied to His diary again as He has ordered & found a mistake in the telephone number.
I corrected that & told others present there about the incidence. Swamiji was present about a few feet from me & was giving answers. Never did He look at my writings. I don’t know how He understood that I had made a mistake.
This is the spirit of Sri Sadguru who always keeps a vigil on the disciple to make him perfect.
Pranam to All.

The development, which an accomplisher has attained after Sadhana for many previous births, indicates his starting point in the present life. The level where the Sadhana of his previous birth stopped, in the present birth, his Sadhana starts from there.
In the path of Sadhana, seekers (“Bhakta”) can broadly be divided into three categories.
One is “Uttam Bhakta” - the high quality / advanced seeker. The sadhakas, who had performed Sadhana in their previous lives, gets initiation in early ages in this birth or, find Sadguru effortlessly. After getting initiation from Sadguru, they devote their life in tough meditation. They develop themselves further in an exceptionally short period of time.
The “Madhyam Bhakta” - the medium quality / mediocre seeker. These categories of seekers, in this present birth, have a strong desire for taking initiation from a Sadguru. But for that, they have to search for a long time and at different places for getting it. The meditation (Japa & Dhanya) they did in their previous lives their mind (chitto - suddhi) had been cleansed. But after sublimation of their soul, they could not attained Bhakti (reverence) and Gyana (knowledge of divinity / absolute knowledge) in past lives. For these reasons, they take more time for self development in their present birth.
The third category of seekers is named as “Adhama-Bhakta” – the least quality seeker. They may or, may not get initiation from a Sadguru in their present birth. Depending on their good works (karma / sanskar) of previous births / present birth, sometime they get initiation from a Sadguru at a later stage of their present birth. But they still pay more attention on fulfillment of their goals/ desires in material life. This causes delay in self realization of these kind of seekers.
Apart from these three categories, there is another category of seeker. He always burst into tears in front of his Guru or, in front of God. His only desire in life becomes to realize God, to get Kripa (blessings) of God. For that he leaves all other things of life. Lord Krishna says “Sraddahabana lavhate Gayanam” – the person having due reverence and sublimation of soul at the feet of God, soon realizes absolute knowledge. This seeker able to find blessings of Sadguru / God and attains his self realized state very soon.
There was a very kind Muslim Sufi (prist) in a small village. One day, an aged Agni-Upasak (one who worships Fire as God) came to his house as a guest. The Sufi entertained the guest at his best and offered meal to him.
In the Sufi’s house, there was a ritual that they offered prayer to their God before taking the meal. On that day, while offering their prayer before meal, the Sufi noticed that the guest did not participate in their prayer. While enquiring the motive, the guest said that “I do not believe in your God. I, only, worship Fire as my God”. The Sufi became very annoyed and straight away throws the hungry old guest out of his house.
After some time, the God appeared to the Sufi and said to him “I know that this old man do not accept my existence at all. Still I grant everything for his comfort and livelihood for such a long time. You consider yourself as my representative on this world. Still, you can not withstand him even for an hour !! Then, how you portray yourself as my representative?”
The Sufi realized his mistake and immediately called back the old man to his house and nourished him with food and other things.
We are very privileged to have Sadhanandaji Maharaj guiding us. This
is a blessing one would never have expected, or even imagined. I bow
to your feet again and again.
It would be good to know more about the wait that was experienced in
the west. Such helps to give a larger understanding.
With grateful heart.

On the first day of 2003, it was my fortune to place before swami Sri Sadhanananda Giri Maharaj the following questions that one of the readers has sent to us. Swamiji was pleased to note that people from so distant places are studying the book line by line & gladly gave the answer.
There is a painful story why western people had to wait so long for getting this Holy book in their hands. That, if He wishes, will be unfolded some other day with His due permission.
The question also points towards a Truth that no book is complete of its own. "Going through this book you can only develope a fair idea about the floor & ceiling of Kriyayoga. To develope the best of its aspects within the inner self one must meet his Guruji face to face & learn directly from Him. The book is just an itinerary but in order to complete a sojourn one must take the toil of traveling."
Gems are everywhere in this grand presentation. Every line is a guide to a vast yogic mystery. The book is really mysterious.
Our reader has quoted the last line of page number 106 of Yoga – Its Mystery and Performing Art “According to the scriptures, the effects of Khechari & the Sambhavi are the same” & asked
1) Can Sambhavi Mudra replace Khechari Mudra in Kriya practice since their effect is the same? 2) Is it more difficult to attain perfection in Sambhavi mudra then in Khechari mudra?
Here we need to take the inner sense, not the exact grammatical meaning. Performing Sambhavi Mudra gives the Sadhaka an inner experience comparable to that gained from the practice of Khechari Mudra. Some of the feelings match indeed, but not all. As the two Mudra are different, so is the result.
Kechari – as we all know – is practiced throughout the Kriya practice, i.e. during the Omkar Pranayama, Yonimudra, Mahamudra etc. After performing a tranquil state of mind develpoes, respiration becomes feeble.
Sambhavi Mudra is practiced after the completion of Kriya, after the tranquil & placid state has been reached. “Sitting in the asana, following the advice of Sri Guruji, alleviating blinking the vision is to be kept fixed ….( page 105).”
Thus a tranquil state developes in both. But Kechari gives something more; it is more powerful than Sambhavi. “when the tongue is reposed on the aforesaid position, it experiences special type of sensation & receives some peculiar type of secretion. This secretion is called nectre by the scriptures.” (Page 98) This can never be attained with Sambhavi.
When Kechari is complete, the result in curbing the restlessness of mind is quit same as Sambhavi Mudra & the Sadhaka need not perform it for the shake of attaining a placid state. But it is more difficult to attain perfection in Kechari Mudra than Sambhavi Mudra.
Thus Sambhavi Mudra can never replace Kechari Mudra in the practice of Kriyayoga.
In this context the photograph of Sri Yukteswar-ji at the beginning of the book “Yoga-Its Mystery and Performing Art” may be consulted. Sri Yukteswar-ji is seen here in the Sambhavi Mudra. A knot is seen near the chest in the woolen ‘shawl’ that He is wearing. It has great inner significance. The photograph depicts Swami Sri Yukteswar-ji in Sambhavi Mudra. He has performed Kriya & now He is performing Japa with his mind fixed at the ‘anahata’ sound originating from “the depths of his hart, continuing without any thrust or stroke.” (Page 109). “Listening to the sound of “AUM” one’s intellectual faculty will cease wayward movement & reside permanently in the serene tranquility of the Supreme Reality.” (Page 110). Placed in Sambhavi Mudra Sri Yukteswar-ji is seen here assimilated with the Supreme.
I have tried to translate the answer which I heard in Bengali from my Guruji Swami Sadhanananda Giri Maharaj. All shortcomings are solely mine. With my Pranam to Swami Sadhananandaji.
The answer to this email should be placed on the board
One of us wrote to me "I have this suggestion. People are always interested in personal accounts. Therefore, perhaps your master would consider writing an autobiography detailing his experiences, finding his master, the trials of his path, his insights, his joys, his spiritual experiences, his revelations, his vision for himself and his disciples and the world, etc. These are only suggestions, of course."
It is really the need of the hour. And Swamiji has also felt the need for a commentary on the Divine Life. He himself started the work of writing an autobiography. But the increasing burden of work - meeting the new devoted souls coming to visit him & wholetime job of looking after about two thousand disciples (some of them are always mistaking like myself) - has meant that the work has been shifted to His very blossom disciple Kalyan Bhattacharyea. He said on 9th this month - "Kalyan's writing has the desired compactness. So he will write about my life." The necessary data has been deposited with Dr Bhattacharyea by Swamiji himself & so it is a matter of few month's time that we will get to read about this Sadguru's very special life. Except that it will be a biography instead of an autobiography.
But I would like to add one sentence from Dr Bhattacharyea himself. "The life of any great Sadhaka like Sadhanananda-ji is a hidden one & full of inner experience, which can never be revealed & we can hardly get into such depth by any biography."
Regarding the part "his spiritual experiences, his revelations, his vision for himself and his disciples and the world" it is my own experience for the last two years that his words & acts match completely with the Holy scriptures like Gita . Gita has described well about this state of a Sadhaka. And I simply see Him & get them verified from Gita. And this has happened many a time now. Previously I used to conceive that He is following the Gita. Now I say, He is the Gita. And anyone can verify that meeting with Him for a few days.

If the red slayer think he slays,
Or if the slain think he is slain,
They know not well the subtle ways
I keep, and pass, and turn again.
Far or forgot to me is near,
Shadow and sunlight are the same,
The vanished gods to me appear,
And one to me are shame and fame.
They reckon ill who leave me out;
When me they fly, I am the wings;
I am the doubter and the doubt,
And I the hymn the Brahmin sings.
The strong gods pine for my abode,
And pine in vain the sacred Seven;
But thou, meek lover of the good!
Find me, and turn thy back on heaven.

I propose to put the answers that Swami Sadhanananda Giri Maharaj gives to questions from His disciples & other Kriyavan & also from book readers as well. I have generated a good collection of it. It needs to be translated & put in electronic mode.
Some of readers have personally written emails with questions, the answers to which I think all should know. So it is better that the answers be put on the group. I propose to hide the identity of the sender of the questions too. The original sender can read the answers directly from the group. In case he has anything more to ask, he can write directly to the group or individually to us here. We will again put the answers to the board.
But we will never put forward any personal question or answer to it in the board.
Members are requested to think on this matter & give there valuable suggestions.
The second kriya is called as kriya of wisdom. According to Lahiri Mahasay, the second lession of pranayama is often known as omkar kriya. This practice helps one to perceive 'Omkara'. The neucleus of this pranayama is the mantra of vasudeva. Our scripture say that mantra - " om namah bhagavate vasudevaya" is an all prevailing mantra.
The Sadhaka initially places the mantra comprising 12 letters ( om--na--mah--bha--ga--va--te--va--su--de--va--ya) in the plexuses of his spinal channel. Then by means of the upward mind and the prana he touches the mantras placed in the plexuses by the pranayama. Then he decends with the downward force mixed with the pace of mind and the prana touching the plexuses in the similar way. In this way, each and every letter of this mantra needs to be placed in the plexuses from muladhara to ajna chakra while ascending and decending of pranayama.
This is the brief description of second kriya.
However, the practice of second kriya should strictly be done under direct supervision of Sadguru or, Yogacharya. This is a "Gurumukhi" knowledge and exact procedure of this kriya and pronunciation of the mantra is to be learnt from Sadguru only.
Dear Ashis, many thanks to you, my dear friend, for inviting a
fellow devotee to your web page. Please answer a question
concerning proper pronunciation of the chakra chants. They are Om,
Naw, Mo, Bhaw, Gaw, Baw, Ta, Su, Da, Yaw. What are the phonetic
sounds in English, if you please, as one may not assume?
Many blessings to you and Swami Sadhanananda, as well as brother
kriyabans everywhere.
Dear brothers,
I have a question regarding the relative merits of Sambhavi mudra
and Khechari mudra. In the book, Yoga-Its mystery and performing
art, by Swami Sadhananda Ji, it is presented that the effects of
these two mudras are the same.
1)Can Sambhavi mudra replace Khechari mudra in Kriya practice since
their effect is the same?
2)Is it more difficult to attain perfection in Sambhavi mudra then
in Khechari mudra?
Sincerest regards,
Miguel
This story was told by respected Sri Acharya Bijoy Krishna Goswami---
Once, in a European Country, there was a drought for a very long time. Everywhere people started to pray to God for rain. During those days, there was an advertisement published in a local newspaper of a city – inviting it’s dwellers to attain a prayer for rain. On scheduled day, before evening, all dwellers of the city started gathering in the Church. Then a small boy arrived there with an umbrella in his hand. Watching that umbrella, already gathered persons said the boy – “ hay, you are really a foolish one. Why you brought the umbrella now?”The boy replied “Today we will pray for rain. God will give us the rain, then, what will happen to us if we don’t have umbrella? Then, all of us will be wet if we have to return home in the rain”.Listening to the boy, everyone get astonished and started laughing.
After the completion of the prayer, really the rain started. Then the boy said “ if you have really belief in god, then you could not have left your umbrellaback at your home. Now see, you all stay here back, I am going.”
----- after stating this story Swamiji said “ pray to God like a baby crying for mother. God is compassionate. He has shown his compassion even to a sinful person like me, then He will not dishearten anyone. If you pray to Him from your heart, He will certainly come to you. I am telling this not by listening it, even not from my imagination. I am saying this from my own experience. God will definitely come to you if you pray respectfully and with honesty. Please pray once in the way I am saying, definitely He will shower His blessing on you.

One of the disciples of Swami Bhabananda Giri Maharaj, i.e. Gurubrother of Swami Sadhanananda-ji has come to the Ashram now. The respect that Sadhanananda-ji puts forward towards his “Satirtha (Gurubrother)” is really an example how sublime the relationship should be. A sentence that I learnt from him is worth sharing with others. After reading sacred texts or biographies of the Great Sadhaka we get inspiration. In stead of just feeling how great those persons are or we should use this very urge from inside then & there & practice Kriya. Only then the labour of reading these scriptures or biographies is adequately paid.
Greetings dear friends,
I was looking over Swami Sadhananda Ji's book , specifically the
section on Yama, the things we are to shun. I attempt to follow
these precepts on faith, and often fail. Would Guruji comment on
what we can do to improve our adherence to these basic regulations.
So much of what we do in day to day life is automatic and without any
real consideration of right or wrong. Even when I feel that my
intended action is not clearly proper, often I feel compeled to
continue (for example arguing), like a cart whose wheels are in very
deep ruts.
Thanks,
m_estevez
If you have any querries please post to club. Our Gurudev will come to one of my Kriyabrother's house on 4th. We will show the querries and get reply from Him.
Thanks for joining the club. I, personally, request you to actively participate here. Also, Soumitra can open this clup in front of Kalyanda and put Kalyanda's answer in writing for you.

I found during the years that different groups serve different
objectives. In this respect each and every one of them is unique.
I realize that it is up to the founder to decide which kind of
messages he/she likes to see shared.
For me harmony, peace wisdom, respect toward others point of views
and above all true Love is the most important collorary for me to be
in it.
During the years and for many other reasons and specially for lack of
understanding I have withdrawn myself from the message boards as an
active participant. I found that being a listener is better than
being talkative type of person.
In the spirit of Kriya Yoga and truth I humbly bow to the feet of all

May I take the liberty of drawing your attention to an outstanding
book on Kriyayoga by one of the greatest yogi of the day. It is YOGA
–
IT'S MYSTERY AND PERFORMING ART, written by Yogacharya Swami
Srimad
Sadhanananda Giri who authors several books in Bengali, claiming
permanent importance in the world of theology.
This book in fact is the English rendering (Translated by Dr Kalyan
Bhattacharyea) from it's Bengali counterpart "YOGA O SADHAN
RAHASYA"
which at present is running it's 4th edition. The book has really
changed the life of many like me by inspiring & infusing in them the
truth that Yoga is not something strange or enigmatic, nor a figment
of fancy. The book depicts yoga as an easy & simple method of
performing art, for all people, which is firmly grounded in reality.
The most important thing for the common man is that the intensely
secret, absolute & ultimate topic of Yoga has probably never before
appeared in print in such a simple & straightforward exposition. It
charts out the way to make this mortal journey meaningful and how to
saturate this worldy life with the radiance of eternity.
The book attempts to suffice all persons in the path of yoga. For a
common man it starts depicting what is Yoga & its necessity for all
of us. Swamiji says that we need not go to the remote mountain tops
of Himalaya or into the inaccessible sylvan retreats of the Narmada
to achieve the Union with the Supreme Soul. Starting from "What is
Yoga" the text moves to the general classification of Yoga,
components of the Yoga, Pranayama & the entity of the Kulakundalini
or the Serpent power. Upto this part, this book is common with most
of the Yoga books available in the market.
The forth chapter of this book starts with the unique style of Swami
Sadhananandaji. Here Swamiji narrates the exact way of practicing the
different mudras i.e. the Khechari Mudra, Mahamudra, Sambhabi Mudra,
Mulavanda Mudra, Bhramari and Yonimudra etc. He touches every minute
detail of these Mudras stating clearly the experience of a new
practitioner of the Mudra & also the ultimate feelings of an advanced
Sadhaka. He also explains the results of these practices. Swamiji
clearly states that all practice of Yoga must be carried out under
direct supervision of a Sad Guru.
Next he moves to clearly state the sequential acts of different Asana
& Mudra in practicing Kriyayoga. As you know that Kriyayoga is
divided into 4 parts i.e. The First Kriya. The Second Kriya etc. In
chapters after chapter he describes the way of actual practicing this
Kriyayoga. The experience of the Balak Sadhaka (a new practitioner) &
the hurdles that his mind poses for him are not spared. But Swamiji
states that this flickering are all but natural & it proves that you
are in the right track. He describes about the Samaskara - the fate
and character with which we are born and how a Sadhaka gradually
destroyed / overcomes it with the supreme guidance of his Gurudev.
The book ends with a chapter that demonstrates the commonness of all
religions. It shows how yoga systhesises different religions on their
apparently diverging elements, how vaisnaba / sakta mysticism and
even Buddhism, Christianity or, Islam treat the same secret path of
yoga for the ultimate realization. The Buddhist Ana pan Smriti, the
Islamic Zikar, the Pranayama of our traditional scriptures may sound
different but the central theme is identical. The Islamic Noor & the
Jyoti of our scriptures are one & the same.
This masterpiece with its clear, grand presentation of doctrines as
such & perceptive exposition of the highest realm of thought &
meditation makes it a must for all the followers of Truth.
