Congratulations once again to all the members of team
Korea! And of course special congratulations to all at
Kyunghee. This year has been an amazing year for
Korean debate, with a good showing at Worlds, a great
first national intervarsity tournament, the textbook
(30% of the total print run sold in the first month of
publication!) and Korean debaters, adjudicators and
universities making massive contributions to both the
Asian intervarsity tournaments. And the year is only
half over! Still to come is the awesome ADI, a
Northeast Asian tournament, and who knows what else.
Thank you Jason for making all this possible.

With best wishes to all members of one of the most
vibrant communities in the debating world,

Brendan

Ewha has been receiving so much congratulations that I felt compelled to answer for us, being the only person not exhausted from participating in Asians or going crazy due to papers and finals ^-^. On a personal level, I would also like to offer congrats to the A team girls - Heaeum, Ji, and Seung Yon - who worked exceedingly hard during the hectic weeks between KIDC and Asians and consequently spent most of the semester very stressed out. Also, EDiS sends heartfelt congratulations to our faculty advisor Dr. Brendan Howe (now a.k.a. the editor of "the textbook") who has become a huge presence for Ewha & Korea at these international tourneys - we really are very very proud!

It's a huge honor for us - all of us - that one of our teams was able to enter the elimination rounds, and although this may not be a big event for many established debating universities, it's almost overwhelming for us as this year's Asians was only our second, and EDiS is now about three + half years old. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly debate is catching on in Korea (although granted it is the land of "ppallee ppallee" (quickly, quickly)), and I strongly believe that this pace will only accelerate in the coming years. I hate cliches, but really for Korean debate, the best is yet to come :) In that light, warm applause to all the Korean institutions participating in an international tournament for the first time, whether in Malaysia or Singapore (I'm not going to name them in case I forget to mention Incheon...haha).

To all the people overseas who have been instrumental in helping Korean debate to grow - Peejay, Ray, Logan, Masako, and many others - thank you so much.

To all the Korean college students on this list whose institutions are still on the outside looking in - get moving, ppallee ppallee!!!

And to the tireless and ever-optimistic Jason Jarvis - don't leave, okay?

Fighting indeed...^-^

Kerry (soon-to-be-retired Senior Director, Ewha Debating Society).

I would like to extend my thanks to Jason for his warm
and generous congratulations. I would also like to
acknowledge the superb participation of other Korean
teams. Korean participation in international
tournaments is growing exponentially - in addition to
Ewha, and Kyung Hee, for whom the tournaments in
Southeast Asia this spring represent their second year
of Asian inter-varsity competition, we also have Chung
Ang University (competing at both tournaments), Kyung
Hee Suwon, and the College of Northeast Asian Studies,
Suwon in action this year.

I hope that next year will see even more of the
excellent teams we saw in the national championships
competing overseas, and also some universities new
(and hopefully keen) to debate. Korea debaters are
increasingly respected in the international community,
and the fact that the only textbook for Asian
inter-varsity competition is also a Korean production
can only increase our exposure.

As an update on the recently completed All Asians, Hae
Eum became the first Northeast Asian to receive one of
the top speaker awards (also ranked 6) and I did
indeed end up judging the Grand Final, which made me
very proud to be representing Ewha, Korea and the
Northeast Asian region. In addition, more than seventy
copies of the textbook 'An Introduction to English
Language Debate in Asia' were sold, including copies
sold to members of the organising committee and the
winning team! I wish all the Korean teams competing in
Singapore this week a wonderful tournament. Good luck
guys, and remember, Korea team fighting!

Cheers,

Brendan

Congratulations to everyone from Korea who did a
marvelous job this All-Asians! :) I'm especially
proud of the Ewha team that ranked 6th, Hea Eum for
finishing as the 6th best speaker, and my honorable
editor Brendan Howe, who judged the Grand Final.

This is a tremendous step forward for Korean debate,
and I, for one, am looking forward to seeing all of
you this August at the ADI, so I can congratulate the
whole Korean delegation in person.

To all those who will be going to the AUDC in
Singapore, I will see you tomorrow! As for the rest,
I will see you soon. :)

Warmest regards,
Peejay

The Ewha team of Hae Eum, Ji and Seung Yon were the
6th ranked team at All Asians in Malaysia, compiling a
record of 5 wins and two losses (both losses coming to
MMU teams who also made it to elimination rounds).

While they did lose in a hard fought debate to the
University of Putra (Malaysia) in the Octofinals, we
should all be very proud of their accomplishment!

This was the FIRST team from Northeast Asia to EVER
participate in a major international tournament
elimination debate!

Dr. Brendan Howe has also been acknowledged as one of
the top adjudicators at the tournament and has judged
in the Masters Final as well as both Octo's and
Quarters so far. Rumor has it that he may well judge
all the way through the final!

Indeed Korea is being represented well at this years
Asians!

good luck to folks going to singapore!

I just wanted to remind people that we are having an
Intervarsity practice session on Saturday, at 10 am at
Hanyang University. I hope to see many of you there!

Second, GOOD LUCK to everyone going to singapore or
malaysia. I am aware that many of the Malaysia bound
students are leaving soon (today?) and I am sure that
all of you will be representing Korea well.
Personally, I will be in KL next wednesday night and
look forward to seeing all of you before I head off to
singapore.

OH please remember that each SCHOOL needs to have one
person attend both the PRE COUNCIL and regular COUNCIL
meeting at Asians. This is VERY IMPORTANT! (It is
also the reason I am coming to KL as well as
singapore!)

FIGHTING!!!!!

Greetings All

As everyone prepares for midterms, please keep in mind
the following:

1. The next Intervarsity Practice Session will be on
Saturday April 30 at Chung Ang University. Dr. Kim
has reserved a set of rooms for us. We will meet at
10 am and set the morning schedule. Please bring
W5000 to pay for lunch!

2. Please consider applying for the ADI Fellows
program, especially if you received a speaker award or
participated in elimination debates at the KIDC
tournament! So far we have applications from Romania,
Philippines, Belorus, Tajikistan, Kyrgystan, Singapore
and Malaysia.....however, NO KOREANS! There are ten
positions available. The process is competitive, but
at a minimum, one spot will be reserved for a Korean
college debater.

3. If you are considering attending either the
Malaysia or Singapore tournaments, it is essential
that you send in your registration fees to reserve
your spot. At this point, both tournaments have
reached their team caps and have wait lists. Sending
in your money ASAP is the only way to ensure you will
have a place in those tournaments.

regards,

jason

Student Debaters Match Logic and Wit
Ewha Holds Intervarsity Debating Championship
By Mike Weisbart
Korea Times, April 3, 2005

Vigorous debate was the name of the game at Ewha
Womans University over the weekend, where student
teams argued over a broad range of topics at the First
Korean Intervarsity Debating Championship.
Hosted by the university¡¯s Division of International
Studies (DIS), the championship drew over 100 debaters
and 30 adjudicators from 10 prominent universities in
and around Seoul.
Preliminary rounds were held all day Saturday and
finished on Sunday morning, with the participants
battling in the all-important knockout rounds on
Sunday afternoon and evening.
The final debate pitted two teams from Ewha
University, who jousted over the contentious issue of
banning smoking in all bars in Korea. The first place
team took home 600,000 won, while the second place
team received 400,000. The other semifinalists,
representing Korea University and Kyung Hee University
were awarded 300,000 each.
The best speaker award was given jointly to Hwang
Eun-song and Choi Yoo-sun from Hankuk University of
Foreign Studies and Ewha Universities, respectively.
The event was initiated and organized by the Ewha
Debating Society. Event coordinators talked up the
value of debating in a structured format, emphasizing
the opportunity for students to improve their public
speaking skills, while learning to argue effectively
without notes and be conversant on the important
issues of the day.
``This type of event is a great chance for people to
come together, convey opinions, develop speaking
skills, and understand important issues that sometimes
don¡¯t get debated in our conservative Korean
society,¡¯¡¯ explained Sun Ju-yearn, a student at the
DIS.
``We can¡¯t afford to not know what¡¯s going on,¡¯¡¯
added Reel Khalifa, a DIS student from Sudan. ``The
strict format also forces us to suppress our emotions
and make the effort to understand the opposite
side.¡¯¡¯
Debate tournaments have been held in Korea before, but
this is the first time Korean university students have
been able to compete only amongst themselves in a
national forum. Organizers are hoping that the
debating spirit will take off throughout the country.
The format for the debates followed the British
Parliamentary debating system, with opposing teams of
three comprising either the government or opposition
side.
Each debate revolved around a motion, or proposition,
on a certain topic that was given to the debaters just
30 minutes prior to debate time. Topics were diverse,
ranging between heady issues like ``human rights
versus development¡¯¡¯ and ``the right to die,¡¯¡¯ to
lighter themes, such as ``privacy rights for
celebrities.¡¯¡¯
Individual debaters were given seven minutes to make a
substantive speech, followed by one four minute
rebuttal on behalf of each team by one member.
During the first round of speeches, members from the
other side could interrupt with questions designed to
challenge the speaker and bolster their own argument.
Because the debaters do not know the topics ahead of
time, the teams often turned to current events to
round out their case.
For instance, in the right to die debate, both teams
approached the issue using the recent case of American
Terry Schiavo, who had been in a coma for over a
decade, and whose parents and husband had waged a very
public and heart-wrenching battle over whether to take
her off life support.
Similarly, in one of the quarterfinal matches, teams
from Korea University and Kyung Hee University in
Suwon broached the subject of the current divide
between Christian and Islamic societies when they
squared off over the issue of religion.
The Kyung Hee side put forth a spirited effort but was
bested in the end. Afterwards, they credited their
debate coach, Peggy Cho, for helping them get ready to
face such difficult questions.
``We wrote papers on various motions and just did our
best to figure out both sides of the story,¡¯¡¯
explained Kim Hong-chul, a 27 year-old senior at Kyung
Hee University.
The event also drew spectators with an active interest
in debating. One group of young students from a local
foreign language high school was especially
appreciative of the opportunity and had turned out to
volunteer.
``I didn¡¯t know there was so much interest in
debating,¡¯¡¯ said Renee Lee, a 2nd year student at
Ewha Girls¡¯ Foreign Language High School.
``Debating is a great chance to learn how to logically
categorize and form your ideas,¡¯¡¯ added Kim Mee-rye,
a senior at the same school. ``I also enjoy the chance
to attack the other side in rebuttals.¡¯¡¯
Organizers are hoping that the success of this year¡¯s
event will spur more interest and advance the cause of
debating in Korea as method of learning English and
promoting understanding.
Another one of the organizers from Ewha¡¯s DIS, Shin
Youn-ah, told The Korea Times that the turnout and the
level of interest was a pleasant surprise,
particularly given that the idea to hold the event
came to them only late last year. ``Everything has
been really smooth and people are having a lot of
fun,¡¯¡¯ she said.
``The event this year could have been a lot bigger but
we capped the number of teams at 30 just to keep it
manageable.¡¯¡¯
To lend legitimacy and prestige to the event,
organizers invited a professional debate adjudicator,
Ray de Cruz, to fly in from Australia and help out
with the proceedings.
De Cruz, who also adjudicated the North East Asian
Championship at Kyung Hee University last year, was
impressed with the level of preparation by both the
organizers and participants.
He said that he recognized many of the faces from the
previous competition and was struck by how quickly the
participants had become proficient at arguing in a
team format in front of an audience.
``Because this type of debating is relatively new
here, it¡¯s fantastic to see all the improvement,¡¯¡¯
he said. ``There¡¯s obviously a lot of effort going
into getting this system of debate up and running in
Korea.¡¯¡¯
In addition to adjudicating such events, De Cruz has
also written the official rules for the World
Universities Debating Championship and the
Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championship.
Parliamentary debate as a competitive academic sport
took off in Great Britain, and has been modeled after
the lively debates that take place in the House of
Commons.
Debate societies at Oxford and Cambridge Universities
gained popularity and fame in the 19th century, and
have led to an explosion of popularity at educational
institutions around the world.

1. Just a reminder that registration and events for
the KIDC (national championship tournament) will begin
on friday. Please come on time. ALL adjudicators
will need to be present for training.

2. It is my understanding that Mr. Ray D'Cruz will be
joining us and has been officially added to the
adjudication team. I cannot say how honored and lucky
we all will be to have him present. Ray was a
co-author on the upcoming textbook "An Introduction to
English Language Debate in Asia". He has a debate
resume that would take hours to go through. Suffice
it to say we are all lucky to have him joining us.

3. Spaces for the two Asian Championship tournaments
are filling up fast. I strongly encourage Korean
teams to go to at least one of the tournaments, either
UM (Malaysia) or NTU (Singapore). It is very
important to me that we have Korean representation at
BOTH tournaments. Personally, I have been added as
the Northeast Asian DCA to the Singapore adjudication
team. The announcement is below. Nonetheless, this
DOES NOT obligate anyone from Korea, aside from the
Kyung Hee teams, to go to Singapore.

If you have questions or need information about either
tournament, links to both tournaments are available on

column)

Great!! Could we have the exhibition debate at Chung Ang University? Thank you very much for your effort. It will certainly mean a lot to our students and our debating communities.
I'm sorry I couldn't see you at last practice meeting.  I'll be able to participate in the debate on next practice session. Hope to see you then.

Greetings All.

There has been a debate exchange between the US and
Japan ongoing for quite a while now.  I have been
attempting to get Korea added to the itinerary of the
US team which comes to Japan every other year.
Finally, they have agreed.

A series of events is being planned for their stay in
Korea at the end of June.  If anyone is interested in
having them come to their campus for an exhibition
debate or training please let me know and I will try
to get your institution included in their schedule
while they are here.

I am very excited about having the US team come here.
I cant really explain how long it has taken me to get
us added to their trip, but it has taken quite a bit
of effort.  Dr. Maxwell Schnurer participated on this
trip as a US representative many years ago (he was on
the ADI faculty last year, and is returning again).
Also, I met Masako Suzuki for the first time when she
toured the US as a member of the Japanese team back in
2000 while I was at Arizona State.

Information about the members and their coach Dr.
Baaske is below.

Greetings!

There is a ton of new information up on the website
now.

There are now links to websites of both of the Asian
Debate championships: one will be in Singapore and the
other in Malaysia. It is my understanding that Ewha
will be attending both, or at least UM in Malaysia.
Kyung Hee is planning to go to Singapore. I strongly
encourage folks to consider attending at least one of
these tournaments. We need to increase the Korean
presence in the Asian community. YOU have the power
to do that!

New pictures of Choong Ang and the Northeast Asian
tournament are up in the debate folks section. If you
have more pictures please send them on.

The first IV practice session was a great success. I
would like to make this a regular event. If we can
arrange these every two weeks it would be awesome.
Anyone want to host something the weekend of April 16?

Finally, Alex came up from Cheonan to judge at the
practice session. He is willing to do some volunteer
coaching so feel free to contact him (thanks for your
help last weekend!). He is a member of this list, so
his personal email is available on the groups website,
or i am sure he will respond to a reply to this list.

regards,

Greetings all,

I have built a blog that will be serving as a website
for info on Korean Debating (and random stuff about my
life).

http://debatekorea.blogspirit.com

If you have anything to add: photos, information, or
just want to post some messages, feel free to pass it
along or visit the site. It is a work in progress and
I hope it can be of assistance.

I know that there is also a cyworld site or two out
there, so if someone will pass along the links I will
add them.

regards

jason
