For those who might be interested. If you are hosting an event or want to bulk order for your school or institution I think the publishers might be able to sort something out in terms of free delivery and/or discounts. They also expressed an interest in promoting the book at debate competitions, so please do let them know if you want them along.
Warmest wishes,
Brendan

Yes, Yaya from Wenzao told me they won the EFL award... I was interested in seeing the whole picture. Very interesting how Korea seems to be dominating Asia intellectually, isn't it?
I'm making some progress at convincing my high school here in Taiwan that international student debating is a useful tool in improving English skills... but it's a slow progress.
I miss all of you guys and I still remember how thoughtful you were in helping my students and me in Bulgaria - you made a special effort and we appreciated that.
If you're in Korea in late January, maybe we could get together. I'm coming back to visit friends.

Hello everyone,
Here's the full tab of the tournament. It was a great show by BFSU and a really good performance by the Korean teams!
Thank you for posting the results. I hope the World Debating Website will post the results for all teams (I'm interested in seeing how the Taiwan teams did) but we'll have to wait and see.
Logan has the tab and promised to post it when he has gotten back to seoul and had a bit of rest.
Final Round Results:
Champion: UIC, Yonsei 1 2nd: EDiS Finalists: Korea University and Hanyang University
78 teams participated from China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand
A big shout out to Cecilee and the BFSU people for working hard to make NEAO a success this year, with less than 2 months to prepare they did a noble job!

As decided at the last KIDA council meeting, I have created a group listserv for the KIDA Tournament Template Team--team, committee, the name is not important but I personally like the triple Ts=].
If you are a member of the Korean university debating community and would like to take part in creating a fair and transparent guideline for debate tournaments in Korea, please join!
On NSDC, I would like to give the best answer possible to 아영’s question. This is what I have learned so far from working with KDA and NSDC for being chief adjudicator for NSDC 2009 senior division.
NSDC stands for National Schools Debate championship Committee. The institution is hosting debate tournaments for middle and high school students.
In the beginning, Times Core – A company which publishes English newspaper “the teen times”, and “the kids times” - and Service for peace – a foundation for international volunteering service - sponsored debate tournament, convened by KDA, financially.
However, for sound continuity of the tournaments, on April 2009, the two title sponsors – Timescore and Service for Peace have agreed to make a committee that serves the overall organization of the tournaments and designated a chair person, Kim Young Joon to do the job. The purpose of the committee is to appoint the convener and adjudication team to run NSDC debate tournaments (four times a year, two each for middle and high school level).
Therefore, as of 2009 NSDC itself started to have its own convening team and adjudication team. Still NSDC is in supportive relationship with KDA in terms of getting past tournaments’ information.
NSDC understands that KDA lost its face due to its several past performances and thus it tries to separate the tournaments from the influence of other parties such as debate organizations like KDA, KFL or even KIDA and other private, profit-based academies.
NSDC is not hosting tournaments on profit based, thus it is not a commercially oriented body.
I, myself, didn’t have the clear picture about the relationship between KFL, KDA and NSDC. But this is what I’ve known so far and I can assure the abovementioned facts are true. Though I cannot guarantee how the relations will evolve through the passage of time between these organizations, what I can tell you now is that I will do my best to provide as fair opportunity to debate as possible to middle and high school debaters and no one gets in the way in between in a profit seeking manner. As soon as I witness that kind of behavior, I will be out of all of this.
So, all in all, as the chief adjudicator for NSDC tournaments I would like to open the debate outlet to all the possible potential debaters without any kinds of limitations. Some debaters in high school level do not have the fair access to an English debate because either they have never heard of this or they think they don’t qualify enough for these tournaments. However, as we debaters all know, debate is a fun and remarkably educational experience for any level of students, I would like to see more diverse students participating the events and make debating community better. And as long as NSDC is with me in this notion, I will happily work with them.

THIRD International conference on argumentation, rhetoric, debate and
the pedagogy of empowerment - thinking and speaking a better world
The World Debate Institute at the University of Vermont USA and ZIP, Za
in proti, zavod za kulturo dialoga/ Pro et contra Institute for culture
of dialogue Slovenia invite all scholars and practitioners of
argumentation, rhetoric, debate, and educators using deliberative
education methodologies to the Third International Conference on
Argumentation, Rhetoric, Debate and the Pedagogy of Empowerment --
THINKING AND SPEAKING A BETTER WORLD.
Two conferences have been held, one in Koper and the other in Ljubljana
Slovenia. The next conference is planned for October 28-29-30 2010. The
conference will be hosted by The University of Maribor, Faculty of
Pedagogy, Department of Philosophy. Both previous conferences attracted
over 85 scholars from around the world.
The conference will welcome scholars and educators from diverse fields
for vigorous dialog and exchange. This conference will unite scholars
of argumentation and rhetoric, teachers, and organizers of local,
national and international debating networks to discuss critical
thinking and advocacy discourse through pedagogy. We intend for the
conference to welcome all who are involved in public discussions and
debates about different issues.
This conference is extremely timely. A global information society which
seeks reasoned solutions to problems through broad citizen involvement
needs to develop and refine techniques for criticizing and validating
ideas through discourse and then impart these to new generations of
citizens if we are to create a better future and avoid looming crises.
This conference represents a unique opportunity to share ideas, network
and cross-fertilize with global critical thinkers.
The program for the conference will have three themes. Submissions are
encouraged to center their work on one of the three themes and to submit
proposals to the appropriate conference division. Interdisciplinary
work that might fit into more than one category is welcome.
Argumentation and rhetoric. The use of logic and reason to criticize
and analyze ideas through communication. Those interested in research
on argumentation theory, criticisms of communication acts and
scholarship on argumentation practice are encouraged to submit to this
division.
Debate. The use of formal argumentation forums to educate and empower
citizens. Those interested in work on the practice and theory of debate
competition, public debates, research on the impact of debate for
participants, and theorizing about debate paradigms are encouraged to
submit to this division.
Critical thinking/pedagogy. Teaching and the methodology of teaching
in the active classroom. Those interested in using debate, discussion
and argumentation in classrooms, discussion of experiences and teaching
lessons relating to communication and critical thinking are encouraged
to submit to this division.
A committee of conference organizers and scholars will examine
submissions to each division. Deadlines and committees will be announced
soon.
Those wishing to attend the conference without submitting a paper are
very welcome but must register.

Chung Ang University will be hosting their 3rd Presidential Cup Tournament next weekend (7th and 8th) and we really need volunteer judges. The tournament will be in Chung Ang, from 10am to approximately 5pm.
The Presidential Cup is a tournament aimed at getting novice debaters into debates. It is an internal tournament, will feature 5 rounds and many many bright eyed debaters. Many people have helped out in the past and it has always been a fun event.
We can't pay you, but we can feed you and get you drunk.
Please let me know if you are available or have any questions.

The first stage
registration of NEAO China 2009, the first international English debate
tournament in China, is successfully closed. We would like to sincerely
thank all registered teams for the attention and support to this year's
NEAO . We are both surprised but deeply encouraged by
the enthusiasm of participants from Korea, Japan, Hongkong,
Macau, Taiwan, Thailand and Mainland China. Although the team cap was
originally set
as 60, the actual number of teams submitting the registration form has
far more exceeding this number.
We had a discussion and decide to extend our cap to accept more teams
from around Asia and China to make it a more diversified international
tournament
for the maximum effect of cultural exchange and
educational experience this tournament would possibly generate for
regional debate communities. We have also been working to increase our
hosting capacity and manage to get 88 teams registered while there are
still a number of teams on the waiting list.
Here is the the registration list with the 88 teams:
Registered Teams
Korea (21)
----------------------------
Korea University 3 teams
Underwood International College (UIC), Yonsei University 3 teams
We would like to remind all registered teams that now the
second registration, also the payment period is open(Oct.15th to
Oct.30th). Our financial director will send email about payment details
soon.
Once again we'd like to extend our sincere thanks for
all institutes and teams. Please let us know if we have any inquiries.
We hope to see you in Beijing this November
