Greetings all!
I am new to this group and this craft/hobby. I am looking for
information on how to make leather key fob and other attractive
attatchments (under 6" final finished size).
Are there any web pages that share detailed instructions or are there
any novice books that can be recommended.
I have found some information on a style that I liked. It is a
medevil braiding style that uses 8 strands. I also think that
the "little lumpy" is cute as well as the ball (unsure of technical
name).
www.stringpage.com\old\braids.html
I am not sure if this is the correct forum for the question or if I
should be looking for a braiding page.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I am curious about making some star knot tie tacks. The info that Edward
Morai provides in the files section of the web page on the eight point star
knot is fantastic. But I was wondering if the same procedure could be
followed with respect to a 5 point star knot. I am particularly interested
in the procedure that secures the tie tack pin in place. Morai uses a 4
cord double strand crown knot. But that leaves me with eight cords to work
with and trimming 3 cords off seems to me would weaken the crown knot. Does
anyone have any suggestions. Has anyone tied a 5 point star knot tie tack?

Dan / Jerry:
What size of line are you using / planning to use for your tacks? I was
doing a 6 strrand star-knot the other day, and it looks that if you make
it with too many strands you would need a core. Any ideas on what to
use?

Pineapple Knots have been very hard to find instructions for.
During last Sundays chat session, Dan (knot_tyer) told me of some
being on the http://photos.yahoo.com/knot_tyer/ site. One was tied
but not tightened. Using that as the example, I have been able to
tie three so far.
They can be seen at http://www.geocities.com/dgtlcwby/
Have fun with knots.
Boffa
Howard,
I plan on using either 2mm cord or #18 twine for a larger size and 1.4mm for
a small size.

hello Howard....for pins/tie tacks i use 1.4mm and 1/16" Yale...
the Yale is "spectra" and it is like cutting steel!..it is very
expensive, but makes a beautiful little pin!!!...i don't use
2mm to make pins(you can, but they are a little large for a tie
tack!)..i use 2mm Marlow (and 1/16" Yale) to make beautiful little
key fobs!!(7-strand Star Knot and Little Lump Knots)...i also
make Star Knot key fobs with 3mm paracord...i use any kind
of cord to make the "refrigerator magnets/"in-out board" magnets"

Hi All,
As Dan C. (knot_tyer) said last month the photo section of this group
is filling up. Dan proposed a solution... Everyone's Yahoo ID comes
with a photo section within their 'personal space'. You can access
yours by going to
http://photos.yahoo.com/(your Yahoo ID)/
Here is an example of my account (knotslipstick)
http://photos.yahoo.com/knotslipstick/
I propose that we each move your older pics to our personal space and
delete them from the groups album space, and then place
a 'bookmark/link' in the links section:
The links are organized alphebetically(sp?), so I propose that we
have a standarized title so that others can find them...

I just got a copy of The Marlinspike Sailor. With all due respect
Winston, I have a Literature degree as well and I wasn't as
impressed with the writing as you were. Not that is was bad, but
just didn't astound me like it did you. (Then again, I like
chocolate covered espresso beans so go figure.)
The pictures however are incredible. Artwork is a better description
than drawings. I highly recomend this book for the artwork alone.

Actually, I didn't help clear out the group's files, because I didn't have
any pics up there, but I did add my first knotting project I made up myself
(combining knots on my own, instead of following all the GREAT patterns I've
found on the web).
It's in the Knot Tying album; my tatting album is still empty, although I
have a LOT more tatting items to add -- just haven't done it yet. lol

Sun sets on Line & Twine
A chapter of Petaluma business history came to a sad end last Friday as the
71-year-old Sunset Line & Twine Co. fell victim to the economic downturn and
ceased operations.
"Our business has been declining in sales and revenue for over a year now,"
said general manager John Agnew. "We reached a point where we didn't see how
we could continue to operate. We didn't see any change coming in the markets
we primarily serve, which are the construction, aircraft, air maintenance and
commercial fishing industries. In light of that, we thought it made more
sense to shut down while we still had the means of meeting the company's
obligations."
Sunset Line & Twine Co., a braiding mill that was founded in 1932 in San
Francisco to produce fishing line, has been a Petaluma fixture since it moved
into the Petaluma silk mill building at the corner of Jefferson and Erwin
streets in 1940. Agnew's father Arthur began working at Sunset in 1936 and
took over the company before moving it to Petaluma.
Over the years, the company expanded its product line to include cordage for
a variety of applications -- from high-tech to the airline industry. During
the 1960s, Sunset cords were used on parachute lines for NASA's Apollo and
Gemini space missions.
"I'm awfully sorry that this has happened," said Agnew of the company's
demise. "It's an unfortunate thing. We just laid off our staff of 19
employees. A number of our employees have been here more than 10 years.
"It's the economy," he continued. "Our sales were down substantially and we
have customers such as United Airlines and TWA that have filed for
bankruptcy. It was unfortunate we were so oriented to industries that
happened to be simultaneously weak. That was our undoing.
"The Line and Twine building, which is on the National Registry of Historic
Buildings, will eventually be sold. "I just hope that whatever follows us
into the building will be something that benefits the community," Agnew
concluded.
Story of my life -- "a day late and a dollar short" as they say. I guess if
anyone has any of this stuff, it just went up in value -- so use it
sparingly. <sigh>

Thanks for the good words. Both nets took about 25 hours to make.
They are reproductions of Pa. Dutch nets that were used in this area
100 years ago. I made them a few years ago for my net making
demonstrations at a local Historical Society.

Very nice, Tony. I'm trying to get some of my tatting up into my "Tatting"

Please send me an e-mail privately, LoopyLacer"AT"aol.com, as I'd like to ask
you a question about your doily.

invited him over to my home last Saturday night and we talked and
shared knots till the early hours of the morning (Sorry to keep ya up
so late Marv). He has done some great work, brought some of it over to
show me. He has some of his work on his web site...

Hey everyone, new guy here. recently became very interested in
knotting and split ply braiding(i know splitply is a different forum).
the knots i saw that really floored me and got me interested were the
knots used to tie elephant hair and giraffe hair bracelets/necklaces.
im trying to figger out how to tie these things using different
materials. aside from being a completely beautiful piece of work(they
appear to differ slightly in construction-possibly because the
elephant hair is much thicker than the giraffe), i like the
sliding/opening/closing action the knots are made for. if nobody knows
the actual construction of these knots, are there any more well known
attractive knots that accomplish the same thing. Not really sure how
to check if this topic has been covered already. Thanking in advance
anyone that has some info for me. As for myself, my knot
education/developement stopped at the first grade. I can quickly tie
my shoes. Most of the time.
Dan,
I meant to email you, but then forgot to do so. Thanks for adding
me to your list.
