Hello All and thank you for accepting me into this group.

Please can you advise if the cable hacking technique will work on brother
KH965i. Has anyone out there tried it? Also, is there a way to get the cable to
work without having to fuse it together. I really do not understand the fusing
part.

Thanks much.

The cable should be the same for the KH965i. Your best bet if you've
never soldered electronics before is to find a friend who does to help
you out. My cable works great with my 930e!

Thanks John. I found the FB100 emulator.
To create my patterns, I need either DAK7 or PPD100 or higher so I wondered if a
PPD100 emulator is somewhere out there. :-)

New here... I have a slew of knitting machines that I have refurbished or will
refurbish when I can make room. Passaps are my favorites. I'm hoping that
somebody will someday find a way to communicate directly from a computer
(hopefully a Mac) to the front carriage without that clunky console. Maybe I'm
hoping for too much.

The only thing I have to offer is a photo album of the interior of a Bit Knitter
made to work between the Passap e6000 knitting machine and and Amiga.

Here's a link to the album:

I am just starting out with an 940 electronic knitting machine after using
punchcard models for many years.

I am confused by the various interface options, and which ones are absolutely
necessary. I can't seem to find anywhere that maps it all out. I don't have a
PPD or FB disk drive, nor DAK/cable setup. It is not likely that I will have
any of them anytime soon as they seem to be either rare or expensive, or both.

I'm running Windows XP on a laptop (ergo no serial port). I am a reasonably
proficient end-user rather than a programmer.

So, can someone confirm for me that following these directions to make a cable
http://www.ladyada.net/wiki/tutorials/knittingmachine/ftdicable.html
should allow me to connect my laptop directly to my machine?

Then I need some sort of disk emulator software on my computer? Do I need to use
the same one as on her tutorial, or will the one that has the simulated
look/feel of the FB100 also work?

If I program a stitch pattern on a friend's PPD & send it to my machine, I
should then be able to upload it to my PC to store it for future use?

What if I want to design in the future (without lugging my 940 over to my
friend's house to use her PPD)? Is there design software that will work
specifically with the cable & FB100 emulator? Am I correct in understanding
that one pixel = a stitch? Will any program like Paint or CorelDraw that lets me
save an image as a bitmap file work? Or do I still need DAK? What do you
use/recommend?

OK, sorry, I've probably asked way too many questions. Thanks in advance for
any help you can give me. :)

Probably. I haven't built that cable, but it looks like a good attempt.

If you happen upon a Tandy TPDD-1 or -2 cable, you can use that in
tandem with a USB serial port or built-in serial port to connect to a
Brother knitting machine. That I've done myself, so I know that works.

Either should work. Maybe some other members could give opinions on

I did a bunch of work a while back on the data format for the KH-930e machine,
and others have been using that work for some cool projects.

Lately I've been working with a couple of people by email who are trying to
figure some things out, and I'd like to ask that discussions move here in stead
of personal email. That will get more people into the loop, spread some
knowledge, and record the discussions for the future.

Any objections? It seems pretty much like what the charter of this group is, but
I wanted to check first.

There is also a discussion about your hack on Ravelry. people are frustrated trying to get the scripts to run.

It turns out that some of the people who contacted my by email had been posting
to Ravelry and other forums for months, but I wasn't following them. I updated
the documentation in the got repository encouraging people to email me, and if
we move discussions to this list I'll publicize that as well.

I suspect that someone may have gotten the emulator running under windows, but
I've not heard from them. I do have reports of various problems with the serial
port library on windows.

The problem that was discussed on ravelry and in other places was a simple bug
in the disk emulator, which only happened on the KH-940 machine. It's already
fixed in the repository - I just wish I had heard about it sooner. Months went
by before anyone emailed me directly about it.

Steve Conklin!

How wonderful! I think you're work is great and I, too, have been trying to do
your knitting machine hack. I am just at the beginning, rewiring my FTDI cable.
The tutorial on adafruit says that it might be possible to include setRTS() in
the python code so that the green wire doesn't need to be spliced with the red
wire. I have very little programming knowledge so I'm not sure how to do that.
Can you help clarify that?

Thanks so much for starting this forum.

Alea,

Absolutely, you can wire the FTDI interface so that it uses hardware
flow control, and it only needs simple jumpers if you do that. A
couple of caveats:

1. Connect the FTDI interface as shown on this page under "Building
the Interface":
http://www.antitronics.com/wiki/index.php?title=Electroknit_Serial_Connections

2. The signal levels may have to be 5V and not 3.3V. I've had mixed
results using 3.3V FTDI cables. I think it will work. Try it and see,
but if it doesn't work, that may be the problem. On the Adafruit FTDI
Friend, you can change the voltage with a jumper. If you're using the
cable, it's a fixed voltage.

3. You have to invert the signals using the FT_PROG  tool, same as the
Adafruit tutorial. Invert all the signals, including the flow control.

4. You have to open the port with flow control turned on. For now, you
have to edit the file PDDemulate.py and change the following line:

self.ser = serial.Serial(port=cport, baudrate=9600, parity='N',
stopbits=1, timeout=1, xonxoff=0, rtscts=0, dsrdtr=0)

- Change it to "rtscts=1"

Currently that's on line 287 in PDDemulate.

I started a major rewrite of PDDemulate which includes this as a
command line option, but other things came up and it's not done. I
hope to get back to this soon.

Please let me know your results, whether it works or not.

I am hoping that it could be just a simple component that has gone which could
be bought locally, my husband is a ex tv enginer. I did make enqiries with a
shop and they said it would cost £45 to repair, but it would cost me more to
send them to them for repair, they are at the other end of the country.

So I thought that if I had some more details of what it could be I could ask my
Husband to repair them for me.

Waiting with fingers crossed, I so enjoyed using my machines before.

Hi Carol, i guess this is a typical case of the old capacitors.
Usually the 0.047uF capacitor is burned.

please see the pictures here:
https://picasaweb.google.com/118181439150165377373/ElectronicBrotherRepair#

to get access you have to remove right part of machine: remove the plastic needs and 2 screws connecting knitting plate
and 2 screws holding power outlet to get access to power board.

Good luck,
Ilja

PS if i'm right this repair takes 10-20 minutes and a neu capacitor is about £0.58

I'm pretty sure your husband will be able to do this for you :)

Hello I am new to this group. Could anybody help me with a service manual or wiring diagram for a Brother KH910 and a 950I. My Machines have been in the loft for a few years, but I now have more time and would like to use them again, But sadly the other day when I set them up and then turnned them on a noise and puff of smoke came from under the needles on the right hand side of the machine, just near the end that the mains lead plugs in.

I am hoping that it could be just a simple component that has gone which could be bought locally, my husband is a ex tv enginer. I did make enqiries with a shop and they said it would cost £45 to repair, but it would cost me more to send them to them for repair, they are at the other end of the country.

So I thought that if I had some more details of what it could be I could ask my Husband to repair them for me.

Waiting with fingers crossed, I so enjoyed using my machines before.

Does this mean the hack will work on the 940 as well?  I had been planning to try & make the cable and follow the steps on the ada site, but then someone had said the hack worked only for the 930 machine.  True, not true?  Is there hope I could get it working on my (940) machine?

The problem that was discussed on ravelry and in other places was a simple bug in the disk emulator, which only happened on the KH-940 machine. It's already fixed in the repository - I just wish I had heard about it sooner. Months went by before anyone emailed me directly about it.
