Barbarazweige (Barbaratswaich, Lewetswaich) >> Winter
"Zum sicheren Aufblühen ist es notwendig, dass man die Zweigenden lang anschneidet oder das Holz mit dem Hammer leicht anklopft, bevor man sie in die Vase stellt. Die Wasseraufnahmefähigkeit wird dadurch vergrößert."

[Today is the feast of Saint Barbara. Barbara lived in Nikomedia, in what is today Turkey. When she confessed that she had become a Christian, she was condemned to death. Why I am suddenly interested in Catholic saints:
"Depressed and alone in her cell, Barbara found a dried up cherry tree branch which she moistened daily with a few drops from her drinking water. She was greatly consoled by the beautiful cherry blossoms that appeared just days before her impending execution."
This legend has given rise to a Christmas custom popular especially in German speaking countries: On the fourth of December you cut a Barbarazweig (St. Barbara's Twig) and take it inside the house, where you place it in water and leave it in a warm place, so that on Christmas day it will bloom.]
