Khowar, is the predominant language of Chitral in Northwest Pakistan, and serves a lingua franca among the different peoples living in the area. Apart from Chitral District, Khowar is also spoken as a first language by the Khow inhabitants of District Ghizer in the Northern Areas, and spoken as a second language by the Khow people of upper Swat, as well as by some pepople of Nuristan, Wakhan Pamir, and Sinkiang. Thus Khowar emerges as a language of more thasn half a million people in the most sensitive and starategic parts of the word. The language has six zones of different dialects, but there is no major difference in its phonetics and grammar.
