First Kiswahili Haiku 2011 From Bamboochas

The Kenya Saijiki entered a new era yesterday when the Moderator Isabelle Sensei launched the first Kiswahili haiku saiji in Kenya. Kiswahili became a second national language in Kenya after the passing of a new constitution on August 4th 2010. Here are the first ever Kiswahili haiku from one of the Nairobi Haiku Clubs, The Bamboochas.

The Bamboochas were so excited with this news they decided to start writing immediately and the result is that this morning the first haijin walked into my office with the haiku below. Enjoy!

The translation was provided by Patrick Sensei:

msimu wa kiangazi—

maembe yaliyooza yametabakaa

barabarani

dry season—

mangoes are scattered

on the road

~Gloria Kerubo

msimu wa kiangazi—

mjakaranda wanyausha matawi

yake ardhini

dry season—

jacaranda tree sheds its leaves

on the ground

~Lucy Mukuhi

msimu wa kiangazi—

mifugo wengi wanakufa

kwa kukosa lishe

dry season—

a lot of cattle dies from

lack of pasture

~Anonymous

kula maembe—

mwanafunzi onyesha wenzi

meno yaliyooza zaidi

eating mangoes—

a student exposes rotten

teeth to his fellows
