You Could Get Googled by Hackers
Google, the fabulous search engine beloved by writers, researchers and
students, has a flaw that allows hackers to inflict serious mischief on
users of the Google Toolbar.
The toolbar (version 1.1.58 and prior) contains a flaw discovered by
Israel's GreyMagic Software Company, which explains that Google has been
offering a popular, free, simple and useful browser toolbar that can be used
to search the Web without going to the Google home page.
According to Google.com: "The new Google Toolbar increases your ability to
find information from anywhere on the web and takes only seconds to install.
When the Google Toolbar is installed, it automatically appears along with
the Internet Explorer toolbar. This means you can quickly and easily use
Google to search from any website location, without returning to the Google
home page to begin another search."
Which give users a big advantage - and could also provoke a bad headache
along with it.
Says GreyMagic: We found multiple security flaws in the Google toolbar; we
will list them all (sorted by severity) ...
Without any user interaction, an attacker can:
Tap to key presses in the toolbar's search box.
Control all visual configuration options.
Enable features with privacy implications.
Clear the toolbar's history.
Completely uninstall the toolbar.
Hijack the toolbar and reroute searches.
Execute arbitrary programs.
Read local files.
Script in the "My Computer" zone.
That's the bad news. The good news is that GreyMagic notified Google about
these problems on July 31, 2002, and worked with them to fix the issues.
Google has been quick to produce a fixed version (1.1.59/1.1.60).
The new version began distributing on Wednesday (Aug. 7, 2002) noon using
the auto-update feature in the Google toolbar. Therefore, most of the
toolbar's users should be protected from these vulnerabilities by now.
For a fuller explanation of the very complicated details, go to GreyMagic's
Web site at http://sec.greymagic.com/adv/gm001-mc/http://www.newsmax.com/showinsidecover.shtml?a=2002/8/8/162247

I have enabled all the self programming functions in the software, turn the
radio off, held the lamp key while turning it back on and nothing. Is there
some type of resistor I have to remove to enable this also. When I turn it on
with the key held it acts like it wants to go into the mode, but chickens out
at the last second and boots up as usual. Thanks in advance to anyone who can
help!!

I am replacing all the power supply capcitors as one of the HV ones
took out one of the 6146B finals.I am looking for the 100uF 500V ones
and the 22uf 450v dual section ones.I have located a source (Antique
Radio Supply) that has a dual section 100uF 500V one that would work
for the 100uF caps.However they only have a 4 section 20uF 475 volt
one that would still work for the 2 dual section caps.I would to find
the caps like the original ones (2 separate 100uF and 2 dual section
22 uF ones)but that may not be possible.
Any ideas where to get the main T/R relay as well? Its fine but I
noticed the 520S and the VFO use the same type (Omron MH4P) and would
be nice to have an extra one.
While I'm at it: replacement mic element for the MC-50 microphone?I
have the mic but all it needs is a new element.Any clues????

Hi Fred,
That's very friendly but in fact I'm looking for a complete manual and I
guess scanning means a lot of work? I know that for the recent models there
are pdf files. Maybe there was one for the TM-732 to?

Has anyone ever phoned Kenwood to see whether they have .pdf files for
discontinued radios? There is a fair number of radios discontinued within
the past 3 or 4 years that I'd be surprised if they didn't have on disk
somewhere. (IIRC, there's even a directory on their FTP site that is set up
for these manuals, but there are no files in that directory.)

I am thinking about buying a Kenwood TM-G707A. I will need a power
supply to run it at home. Any suggestions? Would the Atron RS-12A or
RS-20A work? I also plan on using this in my vehicle. Would I be able
to hook it up to the cigarette lighter?
73,
Tom
I have a Kenwood TM-642 Tri-band radio.
It is now 2 meter / 220 / 440 configuration.
If I have the radio on for a few hours -- just receive -- the
radio will go a little "NUTS" The display will get brighter
and if you key the mic.... local repeaters sound off frequency
and receiver is "deaf". The unit gets sooooo hot that you
can NOT touch the case... this is only receive - no transmitt
and no - the fan does not run during this time.
It still transmitts - but while it is SOooooo HOT -
it seems like the freq is off....
Let it cool -- it is fine again.

Off the top of my head: The -707A probably needs 11-12A. The RS-12A is too
small, it's rated only 9A continuous. (It is rated 12 intermittent, but I
don't think I'd push it.) The RS-20A would be fine at 16A continuous,
though possibly overkill. For the vehicle, many cigarette lighters -- apart
from any noise issues -- won't take that kind of current draw. IIRC, both
my Cherokee and my wife's Windstar are rated below that, for the cigarette
lighters -- but the *accessory* taps (just another cigarette lighter jack,
right?) are wired for heavier loads (forget how much -- might be only 10A?).
I am running two radios in the Cherokee, both wired independently off the
battery. It wasn't that hard to run the wiring. There was an existing
weatherproofed hole for the factory wiring in the rear of the engine
compartment.
I've been very happy with this radio, by the way. I mounted the head
separately. The display is bright and large, very easy to read, and the
controls are excellent for mobile use. Beyond the ergonomics, it's also a
very good performer on both tx and rx. One thing -- if you want to move the
radio in and out of the vehicle, consider mounting it with the head _not_
separated. There is a couple of pieces of small hardware that are easily
lost and hard to replace (I know!).

Tom: I have the 707. AWESOME radio. Only lacks two features - true dual
band (you can only listen to one thing at once), and cross band repeat...
and that's it. I use it as a scanner, as it recieves up past 488 (few ham
radios nowdays do), and has INCREDIBLE 800 mhz coverage and reception.
receives up to 858 at least. Cellular blocked. Great at pulling in signals
- it recieves a commercial 800 mhz frequency (857.xxxx) better than the
kenwood LMR radio I use to transmit on! I think the manual suggests at
least a 20 amp, I'll double check. As for using the cig. lighter, i'd
reccomend against it - if you do, use a HEAVY cord, and a fuse. I think I
tried that once, and got REAL bad alternator hum. (1998 ford taurus at the
time, IIRC).
Any questions on this radio, don't hesitate to ask. Oh, AND it does PL Tone
search! Another thing I don't 'like' - it's too easy to program a channel -
I've overwritten frequencies all too often.

In need of firmware for Kenwood TK-280 and 380 first version. The guy that
had these radios programmed them with the version 2.0 software and now it
will not recognize the software it is supposed to be programmed by. Any help
is greatly appreciated!!

Hi all,
I am new to the group. I just got a Kenwood TM-241 from a friend
of a friend (My friend is the one who was holding it for his friend
to sell) today and my we were looking through the instruction manual
and came across one of teh accessories in the there called and IC-20.
We were curious as to what that was for. the picture showed like 4 or
5 radios attached to it and we thouhgt maybe it was to either a)work
all 5 or b) act like a cross band repeater. Can anyone tell me what
this accessory was used for? Thanks. I'll probably have more
questions later as I get into useing the new radio, but for now this
is what I got. Thanks for your help.

I'm looking for an user's manual for the Kenwood TK 862. A service manual
would be nice also. If you have one email me & let me know . I'm trying to
find out what the options are for the radio.
Thanks

I have a few Kenwood 750 and 850 repeaters and can't get the
programming cable to work. I have modern machines that have no 25
pin serial port, they are all 9 pin so I use a db25 to db 9 adapter.
Is there a special pigtail cable I also have to have or did Kenwood
create a cable that would only work with a 25 pin port and eliminate
all laptops from being able to program their devices?
Fred

I figured out my cable problem, it works now. Does anybody have an opinion
about operating the kenwood 2m and 70cm (750 and 850) repeaters with the fan on
continuous vs. temperature? I don't see why the fan should run all the time.
