Meeting Minutes December 9, 2009

Present:
Billy, Sawyer, Zoe, BreAna, Erin, Garrett, Talon, Arthur, Jazzy (New!), Tony

 Announcements:
--Jane Goodal is being interviewed by Youth Radio folks in Berlin, and they are soliciting questions from their youth radio comrades all over the world. If there’s anything you want to ask Jane Goodal, let me know, and we’ll record it and email it to Berlin.
--Programmer Training Classes are still REQUIRED, and still happening. We’ll have a youth one on Dec. 30th if you can’t make it to the others.
--The Portland Plan will be discussed Next Tuesday from 6:30 – 9. Garrett took a recorder and will go and do some interviews at this event.
--There are LOTS of openings for music host substitutes. Ask Erin for the list, and email Chris if you can do any of them. Lots of Late Night…

The Show: URBAN LEGENDS
--Tony will do a scripted field recording looking for Sasquach.
-- Billy will do a piece on What an Urban Legend is.
--BreAna may do a History of Urban Legends, why are they popular, and delve into the use of story telling to enforce lessons to kids. More of a Why piece than a what piece…
--Saywer couldn’t find the article he was going to report on, so he will do a piece on “The Poodle in the Microwave” and also explore another UL that he’s keeping Secret.
--Garrett will do a piece on the  Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus, which will include an interview! He also is doing some field recording  at the Portland Plan event… so we’ll get a report next week.
--Arthur may interview the comic artist behind Sam and Max, if he can get a hold of him, and if someone helps with the questions… but he’s prepared to make up a brand new Urban Legend!
--Talon will go through UL’s and then tell you if they are true or false
--Erin has work from the Madison kids, one piece on the Chupacabra, and a vox pop on favorite movies.

We also gave the Welcome to the Youth Collective speech to Jazzy. She’s from Clackamas High, and has taken a broadcasting class there…   Welcome!

SEE YOU NEXT WEEK! We will probably meet in Studio 2 … -Erin

"Consolidation has endangered local control over, and access to, broadcast media. Fortunately community stations like KBOO emphasize local voices daily.  KBOO's dedication to these artists and activists helps inspire the work I do.  KBOO is invaluable and deserves your support."

We're very excited to be included in the 2009 Give!Guide, a unique tool designed to assist Portland non-profits in their year-end fundraising.  It has been active for a little over a couple of weeks now, and while we are raising money, it's not nearly as much as we hope to raise, which is $20,000.

Please take a moment right now to send a year-end contribution of any amount to KBOO.  Beyond feeling really good about supporting Portland's coolest radio station, you can also receive some really cool things from the Give!Guide for your donation..

I also understand that the economy isn't exactly re-assuring at the moment, and we feel it here as well.  But it is also worth remembering, to paraphrase a volunteer here, 'that KBOO in times of no money is more valuable than money in times of no KBOO.'

Plus, if you donate $100. or more to KBOO through the Give!Guide, we'll send you a copy of the 2010 Portland Chinook Book, which is worth thousands in coupons to local businesses.  This is in addition to any Give!Guide incentives you choose to receive.

Please pass this email on to your friends and family who might appreciate it.  Thanks so much for your generosity.

Dear Erin,

Thanks very much for your membership support this year.  Along with thousands of others, your contribution has provided us with most of our operating funds this year.  Without generous donors like you, we simply wouldn't be able to operate.

Hi All,

Hi there, I know it seems early, but it's time to send blurbs,
specials, artwork for the January 2010 Listener Guide. We're trying
to beat some of the holiday mail deluge...

A special note: KBOO is experimenting with distribution of the the
guide over the next few months in order to save money on postage. In
the future, the guide may change its focus and print schedule.
Arthur, Sun and I are open to your suggestions on how to serve
listeners and programmers, so let us know your thoughts.

Thanks!
Kathy

Meeting Minutes December 2, 2009

Present:
Sean, Arthur, Zoe, BreAna, Erin, Billy, Sawyer, Talon, Garrett, Athena

Listening: Talon’s Piece on Top Five Pirate Movies of ALL TIME
--Talon introduced the piece by saying he LOST it twice, and this is the Third version, so there are parts of it where he just doesn’t care anymore. This is a lesson in SAVING TO THE FOLDER In The First Place while you’re still fresh…
--There was good music under the narration, and the change of music for each movie was great.
--The Gradual Fade Idea would make the piece much stronger, and being more precise with the movie cuts…
--Talon talked about getting Pan and Volume mixed up, and you can tell sometimes. Be careful!
--Sean gives it a  10 out of 10!
--BreAna really liked the uniformity of going through the 5 clips, with the movie sample in front… people could try and guess what was coming up.
--Billy thought 5 was a really good number of movies to choose, and that the original idea of 10 would have gotten boring.
--Also, before reading narration it is a good idea to get up, take a lap around the station, get some fresh air, and sit back down with a bit more energy.
--But, we all loved it! An amazing first piece, lots of humor, great tech skills for a first timer… Woo Hoo Talon!!!

Guest Speaker: Andrew, the Membership Coordinator (responsible for bringing in most of the money that comes into KBOO…)
--KBOO is one of the featured non profit organizations that is in the Willamette Week Give Guide this year. It’s purpose is to raise money, and encourage young people (under 35 in their case…) to give to charity.
--Andrew will put out an email on Friday, which I will forward to the Youth Collective List Serve. We are being asked to spread it all over the World Wide Web to our lists, facebook and myspace, and to our families, friends, and others who could do the same.
--The Easiest way to find it is to go to the KBOO Website, and click on the Give Guide Image, which will take them to the Give Guide Page. There are incentives and prizes to give to donors…

Programmer Training Classes
--Tony is in one tonight, but we, as hosts, are REQUIRED to sign up for a Programming Excellence Training. If you can’t make any of them, note that on Dec. 30th (the 5th week of the month) the trainings will be the topic of the Youth Collective Meeting. We’ll have a skill share around what we’ve learned, and, since I will do about 25% of the teaching, I’ll have tips for those who Didn’t make it to a class.

The Show: URBAN LEGENDS
--Tony will do a field recording looking for Sasquach.
--Billy mentioned a friend who is nicknamed ‘Sasquach” and may interview him as the punch line to Tony’s piece.
--Saywer has an article he may report on about Myth Busting of Urban Legends
--Athena wants to do something investigative, and we talked about the Oregon Vortex. We’ll keep brainstorming…
--Garrett brought up the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus… I’m so excited to hear more!
--Sean may do a skit making up an urban legend
--Arthur has a few ideas, but seemed to lean towards doing something about the comic Sam and Max, which has Urban Legends in many of their plots.
--BreAna may do a History of Urban Legends, why are they popular, and delve into the use of story telling to enforce lessons to kids.

SEE YOU NEXT WEEK! We may be in Studio 2, but maybe not… -Erin

Hello everyone!

As a follow-up to the spring 'Programming Excellence' series of trainings led by Marilyn Pittman, we are holding a set of trainings during the first three weeks of December to refresh what we learned in the Pittman trainings and give those trainings a KBOO flavor.

Meeting Minutes November 18, 2009

Present:
Sawyer, Billy, BreAna, Tony, Talon, Sean, Athena, Arthur, Zoe, Tori, Erin

Announcements:
Although Andrew was going to come speak to us about the Give Guide Willamette Week thing, he can’t. So, please forward the email I sent to the list last week to all your friends and family members, and do your best to speak of KBOO when this subject comes up.

The Show: NEXT WEEK! Pirates…
-Billy has a list of pirate songs, and  will bring some so we have them to play if we run short. He is also FIRST SHIFT Engineer for the show, and has an idea about using a song to Take Over the Show, just like a Pirate!
-Tony’s Pirate Video Game is NOT WORKING. He is distressed, and not doing a piece on it. However, he will probably get something done for the show. We will all be surprised and delighted!
-Athena, Tori, and Sean have agreed to read informational tidbits about pirates during the show. Sean may also work on a skit, but we are not sure yet.
-Talon’s piece is now Top 5 pirate movies. It’s about halfway recorded, and will be about 5-7 minutes.
-Zoe will research Lady Pirates, and read a commentary about it Live. 5 minute range.
-Arthurs piece of Pirate Jokes is done. 2 minutes all together, or we can play them individually. Both versions are burned onto CD.
-BreAna will do 2 pieces about Somali Pirates, one on the history, and one on the activities of last year. Between the 2, they will cover about 10-15 minutes of the show.
-Sawyers piece of Strange Pirate Facts is done, burned, and a bit over 5 minutes.
-Kevin at Madison High has a vox pop about video games that’s about 3 minutes. We will finish it on Monday.
-Erica from HSRAP has been emailed, and I will keep you posted if she shows.

Be Here At Five Thirty Or So Next Wednesday, or Earlier, Since Most Of You Don’t Have School… Love -Erin

Subject: Media Conference - Nov. 21 8am-5pm, 70 NW Couch St.

For your calendars, from http://www.wemakethemedia.org/ :

WeMakeTheMedia.org - A Call to Action

Oregon and Portland region newspapers are cutting back. Local TV News is only weather, sports, mayhem and fluff.  Radio is more talk than news. The Internet is challenging the traditional advertising-based scaffolding for reporting and journalism.

The journalism we want and need is dying, dead - or yet to be born. The time has come for new approaches, tools, business models, and media organizations to be built and nurtured. Our democracy demands:

  • Good reporting, which, at least most of the time, requires paying people to do it.
  • A watchdog function - investigative journalism.
  • Fact finders to verify and separate truth from fiction.

Where should our local community go from here?

Join us at the WeMakeTheMedia.org Conference to help us plan our response and build a new community journalism enterprise for the Portland metropolitan region.

WeMakeTheMedia.org
Saturday, November 21, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
University of Oregon, Turnbull Center
70 NW Couch, Portland See Map

This open, democratic meeting is structured with seven facilitated breakout sessions to create a vision of desirable "end states" for our Portland community response.

More about Breaking the Sound Barrier:

By Amy Goodman, Edited by Denis Moynihan
Foreword by Bill Moyers

Amy Goodman breaks through the corporate media’s lies, sound-bites, and silence in this wide-ranging new collection of articles. In place of the usual suspects, the “experts” who, in Goodman’s words, “know so little about so much, explain the world to us, and get it so wrong," this accessible, lively collection allows the voices the corporate media exclude and ignore to be heard loud and clear. From community organizers in New Orleans, to the courageous American soldiers who’ve said “No” to Washington’s wars, to the victims of torture and police violence, we are given the extraordinary opportunity to hear ordinary people standing up and speaking out. As Willie Nelson says, “There is no one who should be more on the mainstream media, every day reminding us and giving us a glimpse of the power of one.”

Written with all of the fierce intelligence and passion for truth that millions have come to expect from Amy Goodman’s reportage, Breaking the Sound Barrier is, in Arianna Huffington’s words, “crusading journalism at its best.”

TUESDAY: Didn't We Shut Down the WTO?

  Tuesday, November 17 * 7:00 pm
PSU's Food for Thought Cafe
Smith Memorial Union Basement (south side)
SW Broadway & Salmon * Portland, OR
This panel will feature four leaders of the successful direct action to shut
down the WTO talks in Seattle ten years ago. The panelists will reflect on
the organizing and historical alliance-building of 1999, as well as some of
the lessons they've learned through a decade of organizing since. We will
continue the conversation with questions from the audience, identifying
challenges we still struggle with today. Come with your movement-building
questions and curiosity. Panelists include:

Nancy Haque: In 1999, Nancy was staff with Portland Jobs with Justice and
Jane WTO #520. Nancy organized for both the direct action and the labor
march, while also being a member of the Superstars affinity group. Today,
she is the Building Political Power Director of the Western States Center.

Rev. Joseph Santos-Lyons. In 1999, Joseph was co-founder of Portlanders
Against the WTO and a member of an Asian-American affinity group. Today, he
is the Community Development Coordinator at the Immigrant and Refugee
Community Organization and serves on the board of Coalition for a Livable
Future.

Cara Shufelt: In 1999, Cara was a student organizer of the Radical Action
Group at Lewis and Clark College, helping mobilize over 100 students to join
the direct action. Today, she is Co-Director of the Rural Organizing
Project.

Andrea Townsend: In 1999, Andrea participated in the direct action in
Seattle as a student organizer at Franklin High School. Today, she is an
organizer with the Oregon Fair Trade Campaign, mobilizing people to protest
the new WTO Ministerial on December 5th.

This event is free and open to the public. Sponsored by ORFTC, Students for
Unity and creating democracy.

THURSDAY: Trade and the Environment

Thursday, November 19 * 6:30 pm
Oregon Sierra Club
1821 SE Ankeny St * Portland, OR

The the Columbia Group of the Oregon Sierra Club as they host a potluck
discussion about the ways in which "free trade" policies adversely affect
the environment. It includes a presentation by ORFTC director Arthur
Stamoulis on:
How the World Trade Organization (WTO) has forced the rollback of parts of
the Endangered Species Act, Clean Air Act and other landmark environmental
laws
How existing trade pacts are contributing to "rip and ship" resource
extraction in some of the world's most biodiverse forests
How the WTO handcuffs governments' ability to address climate change,
forcing future policies to conform to restrictive commercial agreements
How trade policies could be changed to help protect the environment, and how
you can get involved
If possible, please bring a food item to share -- but if you're running
late, still come anyway. There will be plenty of food and drink to go
around. This event is free and open to the public

Subject: Time for your input on KBOO Staff Performance Reviews DUE
FRIDAY 11/20

Greetings all,

It's important to received feedback from volunteers as a part of KBOO's
regular staff performance evaluations. At this time, five staff are being
reviewed, and it's crucial that we hear from volunteers about your
experience working with these staffers. We understand that not all
volunteers have experience working with each staff person, but for those
staffers with whom you have worked, please take a minute to provide your
valuable feedback.

Please find attached evaluation templates for:

Ani Haines
Chris Merrick
Justin Miller
Marc de Giere
Zale Chadwick

Hard copies of these are also available in the KBOO lobby. Please return
the completed performance reviews to Arthur Davis, Station Manager, either
by email to manager@..., or by putting a hard copy in an envelope and
leaving it in his mailbox in the lobby.

Thanks so much for your work, and for you input into staff performance
evaluations!
ani
