*Kaye Wood's Quilting Newsletter*

June 1, 2005!

Whoever said you go on vacation to rest? And what’s this about it being the 1st of June already? I protest!

I’m not ready for it, don’t want it and, and, and….

Oh well, I suppose we have to take what’s given! So with that in mind I’ve set up this month’s special to celebrate our 6th month, which coincidentally, only comes once a year.  Read on………

Our internet specials are……. (drum roll, please…..)

For June, the 6th month will get you Kaye’s Strip Quilting Projects Book 9, the Victorian Sampler Quilt, for only $6.00!

Get it? 6th month, $6.00? I knew you’d catch on quick.

We’re going to run our View & Do Shapes for at least one week longer. It’s been such a popular sale, and I don’t want to yank the rug out from our new subscribers, so 1 more week, our View & Dos are $10.00 each! These are regularly $15.00 each so it’s a good time to complete your set, or to try one or all of these very versatile shapes.

Go here to find out what our specials are and to order them:

http://www.kayewood.com/sales.html

Free Project!

Kaye just finished this updated version of her Around The Islands Quilt. Done in beautiful Caribbean Blue fabrics, it’s called Cruise Around The Islands, and was inspired by her recent quilting cruise (there’s another one coming up….)

You need Adobe Acrobat to download this pattern, (sorry webtv users, I haven’t got it transcribed into a web page yet, but I’ll be sure to let you know..)

http://www.kayewood.com/articles/Cruise%20the%20Island.pdf

This new pattern uses Kaye’s Starmaker 8 Master Template as well as her View & Do Octagon Shape (which is rumored to be on sale this week…)

Did I mention another quilting cruise?

Go to www.roundbobbin.com to get details.

If you’re new to our newsletter or our site, you may not realize that we have 2 message boards. I’ll just tell you that they are both an invaluable place to ask and answer questions, as well as just to find another quilting or sewing buddy!

And, here they are:

http://www.kayewood.com/forums and here: http://bbs.cartserver.com/bbs/a/8058/index.cgi

But, that’s not the only way to interact with Kaye or her products. You can always attend a quilt show or seminar that where she is scheduled.

Go here to find that schedule: http://www.kayewood.com/teachingschedule.html

Her next show is in Fennimore , WI , June 3-5 at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College .

Email here for more info: jkilian@...

Speaking of shows, if you’re going to be anywhere near St. Charles , MO in Sept, you’ll have to check out the Everything Quilting and Sewing Show. Sept 15-17, 2005.

You can go here for more info: http://www.roundbobbin.com or call 1-800-4SEWING (1-800-473-9464)

If you haven’t seen the Quilting News Network channel on the internet, you’re missing out! 24/7 quilting shows from your favorite designers!

You really need a high speed connection to view it, but even with a dialup, you can get some of it. Go here to check it out:

http://www.quiltersnewsnetwork.com/

This is fairly new, please take a minute to check it out, it’s a very interesting channel!

Well, that’s all I have for you this week, as always, let me know if you have any questions, suggestions, feedback or just want to drop in!

*Kaye Wood's Quilting Newsletter*

June 7, 2005!

Life is full of "Plan B's"!

For example, last night, my beloved husband mistook my precious hollyhocks for burdock. Granted, before they flower, they do sort of look alike - sort of. Well, my carefully tended hollyhock border is no more. So what does that have to do with Plan B? Now, since that area is all mowed off, and yes, there were some burdock in there, I can replant the whole area with hollyhocks, not just the border! So, as you can probably tell, all of our pictures this week are devoted to my late hollyhocks!

Our internet specials are:

For June, the 6th month will get you Kaye’s Strip Quilting Projects Book 9, the Victorian Sampler Quilt, for only $6.00!

Get it? 6th month, $6.00? I knew you’d catch on quick.

For the next 2 weeks, we have Picture Piecing Book, regularly 24.95, now 18.00!

Ever visited a place or seen a photograph that took your breath away? Became so inspired that you felt compelled to recreate the vision in fabric? But.. where to start? Let Cynthia England guide you through the process she developed. Tricks and tips to make the paper piecing process easy. This book is 132 pages, with all kinds of tips and techniques, as well as projects to get you going. Hmmm, bet he won't mow these hollyhocks down!

Did you know most traditional quilts are designed using Euclid geometry?
Euclid geometry consists of standard squares, triangles and circles.

Do you know what non-Euclid geometry is? Non-Euclid geometry describes the rough edges of the world - the mathematical designs known as fractals.

What is a fractal and what does a fractal art quilt look like? Come and find out at http://www.roserushbrooke.com
Here you will find galleries of quilts created by Rose Rushbrooke, tutorials, and specially selected quilting supplies and notions.

A real burdock plant

Readers Ask Kaye:

Why buy fat quarters and not just use old scraps and pieces?
Kaye: Of course you can use old scraps and pieces, but the fat quarters give quilters more of a variety without buying a lot of fabric that may end up unused.

Which of your patterns would be good to enlarge to a King Size quilt
Kaye: Both of my new patterns, Stacking My Blocks and also Hearts in Bloom are able to be made bigger. The yardage requirements for 4 different sizes as well as the instructions are included in both!

A real hollyhock plant

Kaye Wood's Quilting Newsletter

Tuesday, June 14th. *** Tuesday, June 14th. *** Tuesday, June 14th. *** Tuesday, June 14th. *** Tuesday, June 14th. *** Tuesday, June 14th. *** Tuesday, June 14th. *** Tuesday, June 14th. ***

Hey everyone! I hope you're all enjoying our beautiful summer weather! Could be a tad bit cooler here, but I swear, I'm not complaining!

In case you forgot, this Sunday is Father's Day! Did you know the first Father's Day was observed on June 19th., 1910? Then in 1924, President Coolidge gave his support of a national day. But it wasn't until 1966, that President Johnson signed a presidential decree, declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. What constitutes as a father has changed over the years. I think any man who acts as a father figure and makes a difference in your life, should be honored. Stepfathers, uncles, brothers or a special friend, are all people to be considered. So take a minute, to honor all of the special men in your life, who have taken the time for you!

Hey everyone! I was just wondering if you knew where June could be found? I checked my calendar, checked it twice, as a matter of fact, and still can't figure out where it went. It seemed like when I was a kid I had all the time in the world. The days were long and summer seemed like it would never end. Since I've reached adulthood, which mind you has been for awhile, it seems like it's been just a series of blinks. One blink I'm a child, another and I'm an adult. Yet another and I'm the mother of a ten year old looking back on forty years gone by! I try to take comfort in a great quote by Robert Frost. "In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on." Yes Robert, indeed it does!

Ok, it’s hot! I get that, but my snowblower is crying! Maybe some of you gals from “Down Under” would like to adopt it, it would most likely be much happier this time of year down there! Actually, if you have an extra room…… Never mind.

Before I forget, next week I’ll be on vacation, so this newsletter is for 2 weeks.

This week, we have lots of fun stuff for you. A new sale, some questions and answers from Kaye, and a lost quilt. Read on…

Dresden Plates? We got ‘em!! Fans and Wedges? They’re yours! Along with all of the hints and tips that make them work and play well together. Kaye's Fantastic Fans Book has 40 pages with 35 projects that are perfect for the beginner or intermediate quilter.  Lots of color photos and diagrams, each chapter starts with the basic wedge shape, strip cut with the Starmaker 5, and then continues with its own specialized technique.   Each project can be made on a larger or smaller scale simply by changing the width of the strip with charts included to help you do this easily. Kaye Answers Her Readers’ Questions.

From Joan: What is a good general rule for pressing on pieced quilting patterns?

Kaye: A general rule is to always press toward the darker fabric, this eliminates the darker fabric showing through the lighter fabric.

From Evelyn: Do you prefer to use bias or straight bindings on your quilts?

Kaye: Actually I prefer straight binding. It’s easier to put on, looks better and uses less fabric. I use bias binding for scalloped and curved edges. You can use bias binding for straight edges if you prefer.

Kaye has more tips and techniques on her tips page, http://www.kayewood.com/tips.html

Jean asks about a machine for just quilting. No embroidery stitches needed, just needle threader, thread cutter, drop feed dogs, ¼” foot….

Kaye: My preference would be the Janome 6500. It’s a good price and has the features you’ve mentioned.

Lost Quilt….

The Chester Mystery Play Quilt

On Wednesday, May 25, 2005, The Mystery Play Quilt was stolen from the Chester Cathedral in Chester England . It was on display at the Visitor's Entrance and was taken right off the pole which was attached to wall brackets. The entire news story can be seen at The Guardian online news source.

This original 9 ft by 6 ft quilt was made by American artist BJ Elvgren in 1995, but is not labeled. It is a montage of scenes from the medieval plays set in the City of Chester and it has a border of earth below and stars above. It highlights distinctive landmarks of the city itself including half-timbered buildings and the cathedral. It includes embroidery and metallic fabrics.

For more info on this and other lost quilts, go here:

Kaye answers her readers’ questions.

From Joyce: When you have squares and you want to put them together on point to complete your quilt, is there a formula on how big to cut your triangles to fill in, to make the quilt even? My squares are 14.5”.

Kaye: Complete instructions are in the book, Everyone Can Quilt, here:

http://www.kayewood.com/onlinecat/ecq.html but here’s a condensed version:

Cut right triangles with the long side at 15”, and sew to each outside edge. This works with any dimensions, just add ½” to the size of your squares. The Everyone Can Quilt book is an excellent reference for beginners and advanced quilters.

From Tess: What kind of stabilizer is 2 sided hand press-able stabilizer to do landscape scenes.

Kaye: Steam-a-Seam works wonderfully for this. We have it here:

http://www.kayewood.com/onlinecat/5417.html

From Carol: I’m having problems with mitering the edges of my quilt. In following your instructions on your tips page (http://www.kayewood.com/tips.html) I can’t make it work.

Kaye: Sew to ¼” from the next edge. Turn the whole quilt and sew diagonally to the corner of the quilt. Take the quilt out from under the needle. Fold the binding strip at the edge of the quilt and line it up with the next side. Start sewing at the fold and sew to the next corner. After sewing the entire binding on, fold the binding to the back of the quilt. Hand sew the folded edge to the back of the quilt.

Do you have a question for Kaye? Send it here: mailto:terrye@...?subject=question

Hey everyone! I have one little word for you this week...! It has been a scorcher here in Northern Michigan for weeks now! The kind of heat and humidity that makes you sweat just by breathing. My philosophy is if it's going to be this hot, we might as well be on a beautiful island, enjoying it! But, alas, it's only in my dreams! So, since we can't be there, I think you should fix a big pitcher of lemonade, turn on a big fan, and settle yourself in front of the sewing machine to finish some of those projects you haven't had time for. Not feeling that ambitious? You can always find the latest Kaye's Quilting Friends program on PBS, BYU or QNN, for guaranteed enjoyment! Stay cool!

Fall has always been my favorite time of the year and it can't get here soon enough! So hang in there everyone, drink lots of water and sit in front of the fan! It's the end of July, and before you know it the kids will be back in school, the trees will start turning color and things should start cooling down. I thought pre wound bobbins were not for bed quilts as the thread was not strong enough. I was also told not to use lingere thread for the same reason. What do you think?

I think it's a safe bet if you just use cotton or cotton-poly blend threads. These always work best for me and it doesn't matter how it's wound.

Can you tell me where I can get two sided, hand pressable stabilizer to do landscape scenes? I have tried all over and can't seem to find any.

I would suggest you use Lite Steam a Seam 2. It would hold temporarily by hand pressing but to make a lasting hold, you would have to iron it. Just go to our home page and put Lite Steam in the search engine. It will take you right to the page it appears on.

I am searching for instructions on how to stipple. Can you help?

When you stipple, you cover the surface with close quilting stitches to give a dimpled effect. I am going to direct you to an expert on stipple. Just click the provided link and it will take you to the Sulky instruction page on how to stipple. Good luck.

I am a beginning quilter and would like to know a really structured way to do patchwork piecing. Can you help?

There is no rhyme or reason to crazy quilts. Any straight edged pieces will work, just remember to press the seams toward the new piece after each addition. Trim the seam allowances after adding each piece. If this is not enough information, click on the link below and it will give you at least 10 different sights that are dedicated to crazy quilting, including lessons and how to's. Have fun!

Can I use 40 wt. rayon thread to machine quilt with?

You sure can and it will work great!

I'm thinking of buying a new sewing machine, one that will also do embroidery. Which would you recommend?

My favorite is the Janome Memory Craft 10001. My reasons are too many to list here, but click on the link and it will take you to the Janome web site. When you get there click on machines and accessories. From that page you can access all of the information on the 10001. You will find it very complete and informative and you can decide for yourself.

For the next two weeks we have two of Kaye's wonderful booklets on special for you at a great price! You can get Kaye's own Stardust Quilt and TwinStar Jacket for the low, low price of $6 plus s/h. These are two of Kaye's favorite patterns and we think you'll love them too.

The TwinStar Jacket is a stunning, figure slimming jacket, with dolman sleeves that are strip pieced into log cabin diamonds. Fully lined and loosely fitted, it comes in a variety of sizes, S-3X, to fit everyone! It also comes in 3 different, flattering lengths, waist, hip and knee. This would make a great fall jacket!

The Stardust Quilt is a beautiful quilt with many different variations. You make strip pieced diamonds that can be combined and turned to make a number of designs. These include tumbling blocks, 6 pointed stars or hexagons. Put your designs together to make a table cloth, table runner or a beautiful full size quilt. Kaye includes full instructions such as fabric requirements, layering, mitered borders and quilting of your project. Try Kaye's trademark technique for perfect mitered borders and you'll be amazed at how easy it can be. Kaye's Starmaker 6 is suggested and available for this project.

Both of these booklets for the low, low price of $6.00!

You've spent all this time, energy and money making your new quilt and you love it! But how do you go about caring for it? Here are some tips to consider.

Protect your new quilt by displaying it in a place where it will receive the least amount of stress. (Tips covering this are in last weeks newsletter.)

Avoid washing when spot cleaning or airing would be sufficient.

Restrict activities that would cause stress to bed quilts. This would include food, beverages, cosmetics and denim jeans that may transfer a dye.

Make repairs of seams that come unstitched or other minor damage quickly, so further deterioration is halted.

Keep accurate records of your quilts. Label it with the date it was made, name and location of the quilt maker, name of the quilt and any other information particular to this quilt.

All new quilts should be appraised and insured.

Hey everyone! I hope you're finding an easy way to cope with the heat! It's now the beginning of August, which I can't believe, and before you know it, summer will be gone! So try to find some enjoyment in the warm sun, while you still can!

I have had a request to repeat a poem I put in the newsletter about 7-8 months ago. Here you go, Pam, this one's for you, enjoy!

Ode To A Quilting Wife From Her Husband

She learned to quilt on Monday, her stitches were very fine. She forgot to thaw out dinner, so we went out to dine. She quilted miniatures on Tuesday, she says they are a must. They really were quite lovely, but she forgot to dust! On Wednesday it was a sampler, she says that stipling's fun. What highlights, what shadows, but the laundry wasn't done! Her patches were on Thursday, green, yellow, blue and red. I guess she was really engrossed, she never made the bed. It was wall hangings on Friday, in colors she adores. It never bothered her at all, the crumbs on the floors. I found a maid on Saturday, my week is now complete. My wife can quilt the hours away, the house will still be neat. Well, it's already Sunday, I think I'm about to wilt! I cursed, I raved, I ranted, the MAID has learned to QUILT! Author Unknown

If you have a cute poem or story about quilting, send them in! We'd love to feature them in our newsletter!

Just Ask Kaye!

What would you consider the best choice of batting for a quilt that will be used and abused?

I would use a poly bonded batting. They seem to take the washing and drying better.

I am making a round robin quilt and need the formula to make the four triangles that are added to the sides.

I would cut the strips 3/4" wider than you need. To figure out how much you need, measure from the edge of the square to where the next corner will be. Sew the strip on, then square it up.

I have seen Kaye's show and wondered where she got the sewing machine thread carousel she uses.

Kaye got this handy device from Ray's Sewing Machine Center. Here is the address and phone number.

Ray's Sewing Machine Center

1717 Park Ave. San Jose, CA 95126

1-408-295-6901

How do you avoid puckering and gathering while machine quilting?

I use lots and lots of safety pins to baste the layers together. A spray adhesive would work well too.

I have another great product for all of you to check out! This week, straight from The Quilter's Cottage, we have the Sew Shabby Chic Bowl Kit! Talk about fun and easy, this is just the ticket! These decorative bowls are great for a number of things such as candy dishes, seasonal decor, soap holders, you name it! Our office manager, Brenda, made a bunch and then filled them with goodies, to give as prizes at her daughter's baby shower! Can you say BIG HIT? My daughter's bowl has a porcelain baby wrapped in a blanket, on a cloud of cotton batting in her room. The possibilities are endless. Each kit comes with full instructions, the bowl tool, accessory tool and 1 piece of 13 1/2" bowl interfacing. Order extra interfacings to make lots of bowls. Great for gift giving, parties, holidays, you name it! Check it out by clicking the link.

We have had lots of people asking how to store their quilts. Here are some tips that should help.

1. Quilts should be aired or vacuumed before storing. Use a low suction hand vac with a nylon screen to protect it from harmful pull. When airing, be sure the quilt is laying flat, protected from soil, and not in direct sunlight.

2. The ideal storage is a flat surface, properly lined with acid free material, large enough to have it's own space.

3. When folding, use crumpled acid-free tissue in the folds for support. Refold the quilt every 3-6 months to minimize permanent fold lines. Rolling quilts is an option, but it does place stress on the entire quilt.

4. If the storage unit is made of wood or cardboard, it should be lined with several layers of washed, 100% cotton fabric. This is necessary to protect the fabric from chemicals in the wood or paper. Cotton liner should be washed semi-annually.

5. Covers of pre washed 100% cotton sheeting, muslin, pillow cases, or acid-free tissue paper are strongly recommended. These materials allow air to pass through and keep light and dust out. Plastic is not advised.

6. Keep the storage area clean and insect free. The herb Artemisia is a natural pesticide. Hang in the storage area or in a small bag. Do not let the bag touch the quilts!

I have but one small request. I need to fill up my gas tank this week and have to find a low interest loan to pay for it! Are you believing these gas prices? As a person who drives over 30 miles one way to get to work, this is not good! If this keeps up, Kaye's going to have to adopt me as her 6th child! I have always driven my daughter to school to avoid her having to get up at 5:00 and riding the bus for an hour and a half. Now I'm thinking, forgo the beauty sleep, and catch a few extra winks on that bus trip to school! I don't know how they expect people to deal with this! It must be time to go back to a simpler way of life and beg Terrye for the use of her horse and buggy! I'll have to leave at midnight the night before to get to work, but I can feed that horse like a king for the amount I'm paying for gas! Take my advice, if you can do it, stay home and quilt! It's a lot less stress, much more enjoyable and far cheaper in the long run!

Just Ask Kaye!

I'm finally trying to organize my fabrics, what a job! Do you have any suggestions?

I sort my fabric by color schemes. All my reds together, same with blues, you get the idea. I, like everyone else, have to put them in different places to accommodate all the fabric I have. My solution is to put it in wire baskets, clear plastic drawers, and regular drawers with the color posted on the drawer front. That way when I need, say a pink, I just go to that bin or drawer, and there are all the pinks I have in my stash. Oh yes, and roll your fabric. It takes less space and less digging time.

How can I enlarge a quilt without taking away from the current design?

I would add one or two plain borders, one light and one dark. This will actually frame your design rather than detract from it.

Can you tell me what echo quilting is?

Echo quilting is a quilt line repeated over the surface at even measures. It is often used to fill in a background area and the first line is generally parallel to the edges of a pieced or appliqued shape. Thus, the repeated lines "echo" that shape.

Useful Information

For quilts that are very dirty, wet cleaning might be necessary. Here's how you do that.

1. Dye test all fabrics to see if any color bleeds. You can do this by wetting a soft clean cloth with room temp water. Press it against the fabric to see if any dye comes off. Check each different fabric in the quilt. If any bleeds, do not proceed. Check again with detergent mixed in the water. If any bleeding, do not proceed.

2. Prepare a bath of clear tepid water and detergent in a tub 6-8 inches deep. This is to loosen dirt and restore moisture. You need to use a cradle to lower and raise your quilt into and out of the water. This can be a nylon screen or a clean cotton blanket or sheet. Unfold the quilt and drape it in the cradle so the water can penetrate evenly.

3. Lower the quilt into the water in an accordion fold, pressing the water through gently. Keep the quilt immersed and move the water gently through.

4. Without removing the quilt, open the drain of the bath and allow the water to run off. Do not squeeze or wring, pressing it gently with a pre-washed towel, will help remove additional water.

5. Fill the tub again with tepid water, do not let water fall directly on the quilt.

6. Repeat washing and rinsing until quilt appears clean. Rinse until water is clear. This may take 6-8 times.

7. Press quilt gently to remove excess water. Lift the quilt using the cradle and place it on a clean, white absorbent surface. Remove the cradle gently and roll the quilt loosely to remove excess water. Straighten the quilt on drying surface with right side down. Turn the quilt every 30 to 45 minutes until dry. Do not fold or store until the quilt is completely dry.

A lot of work? You bet, but when you put that much time and energy and love into it, isn't it worth it? *Information from AQS

Hey everyone! I hope you had a great weekend! Things are finally shaping up here in Northern Michigan. The temperature is agreeable enough to enjoy the great outdoors a little bit, without suffering from a heat stroke!

Summer is definitely starting to wind down. It never really hits me until I have to start school shopping and planning my schedule around homework and soccer games. Now is a great time to plan an end of summer trip with the family. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate. Here, a great trip consists of a new lake or forest to explore, a few winding roads and a picnic lunch. What can be better? Throw in a bonfire to enjoy the beautiful starlit night and that comes about as close to perfect as it can be. What better way to enjoy the spectacular things nature has to offer with the ones you love.

Just Ask Kaye!

I often wondered just what women in earlier centuries used for batting.

They used pretty much anything they could get their hands on. Unless you were a women of means, you couldn't just run out and buy something, so they made due with the things around them. This ranged from old blankets to newspapers to feathers and even leaves! Sure makes us appreciate our century!

I have a bad habit of starting more projects before finishing others I have already begun. Any ideas on how to be more disciplined?

Why would you want to be? People who force themselves to do that, in my opinion, are taking all the fun and adventure out of quilting! Everyone tends to get bored at one time or another with a project. I think it's better to put it aside and let it rest. When you do go back to it, it will be fresh again and you'll probably have many more fantastic ideas for your quilt. If you do insist on being that diligent, maybe you should think about smaller projects that you can get done faster. Another way is to join a group or guild. It's a great way to meet new friends and get new ideas. You'll be surprised how much you can get done while chatting away with a friend. Good luck!

My cutting board has deep ridges and is getting ruined! Any ideas why this is happening?

This is from having a dull blade on your cutter. When your blade is dull, then you have to adjust the pressure you put on your rotary cutter in order for it to cut. More pressure, deeper ridges. Your blade should be changed often, so you don't have to force your blade through the cloth.

When you do machine quilting, I'm confused about which foot to use. Should it be the walking foot or rolling foot?

No need to be confused, you can use either one. Both do what they should, which is to reduce pressure on the fabric, so the top layer isn't pushed through faster. However, if quilting in the ditch, the rolling foot is better because you can see the ditch better.

Well, it's that time of the year again. Across the country parents are giving big sighs of relief as they drop their kids off to school or watch them board the buses that will take them there. Yes, we've survived another summer vacation and once again peace reigns. Most people are glad to see this time get here, but I have to tell you, I am not one of them. What this means to me is another year of running too and fro getting my daughter to all of her obligations. Another year of trying to understand homework which was just called reading, writing and math, when I went to school, and another year of packing lunches and fighting to get her out of bed. No, summer is definitely easier for me. But I think the worse thing is the realization that another year has gone by and my daughter is yet another year older. I love watching her grow, but yearn for the days when she looked at me in awe as though I was the smartest person she knew. When no meant no and not "why" and boys still had cooties. Yes, my little girl is slowly being replaced by a pre-teen and all that goes with it and all I can do is hang on. I'm sure it will be quite a ride!

Just Ask Kaye!

I have a book that shows the log cabin blocks, and I would like to know how to make the quilt smaller than it shows in the book. Do I just make a smaller number of blocks, or is there a certain pattern that you must use to make it smaller?

You could use less strips, you could use thinner strips or you could use a smaller amount of blocks. It's up to you, but all will work.

I'm making a quilt for my daughter-in-law. She's not very fabric/quilt literate, so I'm looking for instructions for quilt care, to give to her at the same time when I present her quilt. Me thinks, she would be more interested if they came from someone who is considered a professional in the field. Where can I find instructions to print off to include with the gift?? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I found a wonderful web site for you to get this info. Click the link and go to "our loft". Scroll down and they have a caring for your quilt section to click on. It has all the information you need.

When rotary cutting, my cutter skips. I have changed blades several times and it still does it. What am I doing wrong? I'm new at this.

What kind of mat are you using? It could be that. You should try to use a higher quality mat and cutter such as a Clover, Olfa or Fiskars. A cheaper one will be, well, you get what you pay for. ;-)

HELP!!! I have a beautiful fabric that I want to use for backing. It's base color is burgundy, and it has dark red and yellow flowers with dark gold leaves. I have washed it several times with Shout Color Catchers, and I am still getting dye out. I would love to use it for the backing, but I don't know if there is a way to fix the dye permanently so it doesn't bleed anymore. Should I just use the fabric and give a box of color catchers to the recipient of the quilt? Any help or guideline would be great.

I did quite a bit of research on this subject and found a lot of different answers. People used everything from vinegar, to salt, to chemical catchers such as the Shout Color Catchers you used. I'm still not sure I have the total answer, but here are some of the responses I found from the World Wide Quilting Page.

One lady tried a product called Re-tayne from a company called Pro-Chem. It is supposed to fix any unfixed dye and wash it away, so it will no longer bleed. The lady who used it responded that it worked really well with no additional bleeding to any of her fabrics thus far. The gallon was around $14 and she considered it well worth it.

Another product that Pro Chem suggested was Synthropol. The difference between this and Re-tayne was this. Retayne actually sets errant dyes so they'll stop bleeding and Synthropal "floats" out any unfixed dye and keeps it from fixing itself onto areas of the fabric that you don't want to be stained. If you are interested in either of these products, here is some contact info.

Pro Chemical and Dye

PO Box 14 Somerset, MA 02726

website-www.prochemical.com

orders-1-800-2-BUY-DYE

technical support-508-676-3838

Another lady used vinegar when she had that problem, although some people consider this a little caustic for their fabrics. She responded that if the vinegar didn't stop the bleeding, she seriously had to consider whether to use the fabric or not.

Last but not least, since you've been using the Shout treatment already, you might want to contact them for further suggestions.

The Survey Says...

A big thanks to everyone who participated in our survey last week. This was our question.

Do you:

a) machine quilt

b) hand quilt

c) send it out to be quilted

d) tie it

This is what the majority of our quilters came up with. Machine quilting was the top result beating out hand quilting by a 2/1 margin. Sending it out was next, followed by tying it. A lot of you do 2 or more methods, depending on the project, time allowed and size.

As always with our surveys, we received some very interesting responses. Here are a few of them.

For one quilter, her husband took care of that part of it. Another lady tied it with cheap garage sale blankets. Yet another, responded that is was wrong to machine quilt, but she still does it. No one knows it, but she does. This quilter was a big fan of quilting in the ditch because she was a beginner and couldn't think outside of the box! Oh yes, and last but not least, our poor quilter who wants a recommendation for a quilt therapist, to help her with this addiction! Great responses everyone, you always give me a good chuckle! Thanks again!

September means a new monthly special!

September is here already and with that comes a new monthly special! Hot off the press is Kaye's new pattern called Pinwheel Hearts and you are just going to love it! Comes with directions and fabric requirements for twin to king size quilts and uses Kaye's View & Do Heart Shape. In honor of this new pattern, whenever you buy a View & Do Heart Shape this month, you can get the new Pinwheel Hearts pattern for half price! That's right, buy the shape and the pattern is only $4! Check it out, but don't wait too long, the months have been going by quick!

Buy the shape and get the new pattern for half price!

Kaye demonstrated on a program how to prepare the back of a pillow for insertion. What measurements did she use? I know the back was sewn into two pieces.

For a 14" pillow, cut two 15 x 20 inch pieces. Complete instructions and diagrams are found in Kaye's book, Strip Quilting Projects #3 which is on sale for $5. Click on the link for a peek at this book.

I was wondering how when you measure for your borders, you can get them to be exactly the correct length. I am making the top and bottom borders after the side ones. The top and bottom borders have squares at the corners. They have come out either too long or too short. Do I put the last square on after I sew the border strip on?

Complete instructions for doing this are in Kaye's book, Everyone Can Quilt. The border strips have to be measured the exact length or width of the quilt, at the center. Cut the side border strips the exact length of the quilt. Fold the border strips in half and mark the half with a pin. Then fold the strip in half again and pin at these quarter points. The quilt needs to be fitted to the border, by matching the center and quarter points of the border strip to the center and quarter points of the quilt. Sew with the border strip on top; the quilt underneath. Cut the top and bottom border strips the exact width of the quilt. Sew the corner squares to each end of these border strips. Fold and pin these border strips. Match the center, quarter and the seam lines of the border strips to the quilt. Sew with border strips on top. Click the link for peek pages of Everyone Can Quilt!

Where can I find Redwork quilting?

There are some Redwork patterns in the book we carry, Sulky Secrets To Successful Embroidery. If you want a book on just Redwork quilting, I would go to your search engine and put in Redwork quilting. I'm sure a ton of books will come up.

Hey everyone! As you can see by the picture, it's getting to be that time of the year already. Labor Day is gone and now fall can settle in. I'm very excited since it's my favorite season. There is nothing better then taking a walk on a cool, crisp fall day. The smell of the clean, fresh air and the sound of dried leaves crunching under your feet, is something everyone should enjoy at least once in their lifetime. It's like a painter's palette as the beautiful green leaves of summer slowly give way to the yellow, brown, gold and orange that dominate this time of year. If ever you needed inspiration for a quilt, I think fall is where it's at! So take a look around, be creative, be inspired and just let it flow! You might be surprised where it takes you!

You Can Help!

I'm sure you have seen the devastation in our southern states. The Red Cross is taking just about anything in the way of donations. For more info on how to help, check out the Red Cross website.

Just in time for fall is the Autumn Splendor table runner! Just think how beautiful this would look on your table at home! The perfect blend of fall colors, will definitely put you in the fall mood! Easy to do, with the Sew Easy Triangles, it would make a wonderful gift for your friends or yourself! Keep reading for more information on the Sew Easy Triangles.

What are sew easy triangles and how do they work? Sew Easy Triangles are a printed grid on fusible paper that enables the sewer to make precise half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles, and reversible prairie points. Sandwich two fabrics right sides together, and fuse a page of Sew Easy Triangle paper in place with a hot dry iron, no pinning is necessary! Stitch on the dotted sewing lines (no marking is necessary), cut on the cutting lines, peel the paper, and press open. No squaring up! Your triangles are ready to go into a project. Sew Easy Triangles can be used with any pattern, but you will need to know the finished size of the triangle units you will be making (size without seam allowances added on). Click the link for more information.

Just Ask Kaye Wood!

Q: I love the rolling idea with the wire baskets to separate your colors. But what do you do with those prints on white background, the all over different color, or the holiday ones?

A: Seasonal prints go all together, otherwise, I use the most prominent color or the background color and put them in the corresponding bin. You could create your crazy bin too, for all those off beat fabrics. The main thing is to have a system that works for you.

Q: I want to know why my wallhangings are always lumpy? I use good fabric and cotton batting and still get a lumpy look.

A: Without seeing it, it's hard to say why it's like that. I can suggest that you be sure to use bonded or needlepunch batting and put in lots of quilting stitches.

Q: When a cutting board is warped, is there any way to restore it to it's flat state? Also, what is the easiest and best way to store them to avoid warping?

A: The only thing you can do that I know, is to lay it flat on top of a dryer or out in the hot sun, with something heavy covering the whole top of it. They really need to be stored flat, this is a must. Try under the bed or couch, and keep it covered to prevent dust and dirt from getting on it.

And The Survey Says...

Hey everyone, here is another fun survey for you. We love to do these and it's always fun to get a little more insight on our quilters.

mailto:terrye@...?subject=survey

Our Readers Respond

On a occasion, we get responses from our readers to some of our questions, that have their own great ideas! Here are a couple of those responses.

Batting for quilts.

I don't have a question, but a comment on what people used for batting. I have a quilt that has sugar sacks for batting and I know one person who, in this day and age, collected milkweed to stuff a pillow with.

Jean Ingham

Keeping your cutting board from warping.

Just got the newsletter and enjoyed the reading and ideas. Had a suggestion for the lady who wanted to know about her cutting board. If she is limited for space as myself and do not want to always bend over and get the board out from under the bed, have her make her own portfolio, for storing and carrying her broad to classes.

Go to your friendly appliance store and get a box that will fit the board. Cut two sides, or cut a size that can include the fold of the box. Cover it with a thin fleece or flannel....place the mat inside and use some extra stripes that you may have had from an earlier project. This way you can stand it up behind a cabinet, bed head board, or in the closet until the next time you need it. I have done this for years and it's cheap and efficient, so that I have more money for other items. Pass it on if you like.

Well, this week it's finally here. The first official day of fall! I have to tell you, I wait all year for this. It's so breathtaking and invigorating, it just makes you feel alive! My daughter and I went pumpkin picking yesterday and since we were in the spirit, decided to put out Halloween decorations. I know, I know, we're pushing it, but those little homemade ghosts look very cute hanging from the trees. Most of all, it was a perfect day together, doing something we love to do, and just enjoying each others company. Sure I could've dusted or washed clothes, but it'll wait. The moments I have with my daughter won't.

So relaxing and fun to do, you can watch your favorite TV show and still get a quilt done! Makes a great family project. Also included is a BONUS project to use up the left over pieces called the Not So Square Knot Quilt! Anyway you look at it, it spells tons of fun. Click on the link for more information.

Hey everyone, we are proud to bring you this free project from none other then Joan Hawley of Lazy Girl Designs! If nothing else we have found quilters to be among the most giving people we know. They are always ready to help out when it is needed. In the spirit of this, read on to see what Joan has to say about her free bag project.

This free pattern was designed after hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast of the United States. Many people displaced due to the hurricane damage, left their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs. This tote bag pattern is something simple, that can be made quickly and will give people a place to keep some of the things they begin to accumulate and carry with them.

Thanks!

Joan Hawley

And The Survey Says...

As usual our wonderful readers did not disappoint us when it comes to being charitable. You really are a very caring, impressive bunch out there. Here is the survey question from last week and some of the results we received.

Do you have a favorite quilting and sewing charity? If so, what is it?

In no certain order, here are some of the charities.

1) Ronald McDonald House

2) Project Linus

3) Binky Patrol

4) Quilts With Love

5) Quilts For Angels

We also were told about a lot of local charities you are involved with. Some of these include fire and police departments, nursing and retirement centers, local hospitals, cancer centers, animal shelters and rescues, women and children shelters and soldiers here and abroad. This is not even close to being all the charities you support. All I can say is, keep up the good work, you are definitely making a difference in some ones life!

Quilts for those who need a little extra love

We are gearing up for the upcoming Love Quilt Connection that will be held in Novi, Michigan at the end of the month. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers to help out. For those of you that are not familiar with this, the  Love Quilt Connection is an event that Kaye Wood Inc, with the help of fellow sponsors, puts on to make Kaye's 6 hour quilts to donate (at the end of the show) to a local charity. This years charity is the Detroit Receiving Hospital.

The Love Quilt Connection will be held at the American Stitches Expo on Friday, Sept 30 through Sunday, Oct 2. We will have sergers set up so show attendees can sit down for as little as 10 minutes to assemble the quilts. Now, here's were I need help. I am looking for volunteers to help these attendees work on the quilts. No experience is necessary, although it would be a great help if you are familiar with the 6 hour quilt technique. I would like to schedule volunteers in 4 hour time blocks each day. If you would like to help out with this well-worthy cause, please e-mail me at lori@... so that I can schedule you in and give you all the details!

Sincerely,
Lori Jonsson

Just Ask Kaye!

I have a quilt with lots of white in it, that has been stored for three years in a cotton pillowcase. I'm hoping you can tell me what to wash it with, to bring it back to it's white condition. Thank you for your time. Gina

Kaye recommends using Orvus. It's an extremely gentle detergent that can be used to clean fine rugs. Non-irritating, it will not discolor dyes.

I have a desire to make a Dresden Plate quilt using 14 petals, but can not find a pattern. Is it possible to create a pattern or should I scrap this idea? Beverly

It is possible, but we don't have a template to do that. Here is a formula that you may be able to create one with. 360 (degrees) divided by 14 (number of petals) would be the formula to find the angle. Good luck!

I was wondering if you have a pattern for making a quilt out of t-shirts? My friends son passed away and he had lots of tie-dyed t-shirts. We thought it would be nice to make them into a quilt. We have seen it done, but don't know where to start. Thank you in advance of any help or patterns. Ginny a faithful reader.

Iron on interfacing is the way I'd do it. Use it on the back part of the shirt you wish to use. Then you can cut it into squares, circles, wedges or whatever shapes you need for the particular design you're using.

Still Need Help!

There are still tons of hurricane victims that need help. Here are some helpful links to point you in the right direction.

Free Project!

Hey everyone, we are again giving you the chance to participate in this free project from none other then Joan Hawley of Lazy Girl Designs! Read on to see what Joan has to say about her free bag project.

Thanks!

And The Survey Says...

Last week we posted a new survey and as usual, you didn't disappoint us! Here is the survey question from last week and some of the results we received.

Q: What do you use to mark your quilts?

In no certain order, here are some of the answers we received.

1) Chalk, with no wax or oils in it.

2) Chalk wheel.

3) Washable and permanent markers and a hera marker.

4) Pens and pencils, regular and disappearing. A Verithin Silver pencil, Ultimate Marking Pencil for Quilters & Crafters and Roxanne's Quilters Choice pencils.

5) Tracing wheel.

6) Soap, such as shards of Ivory soap.

7) Arranging safety pin railroad tracks which is sewing between the tracks in a meandering way. Regular pins.

8) Stitching in the ditch and following the pattern of the backing fabric.

9) I use a 1/4 inch tape when doing straight quilting, but have snipped it to fit curves.

10) I recently found a spray that can be used with stencils. I really like it, much faster then marking. It does rub off easily though, so I only spray one small area at a time, since I quilt in a hoop. You could probably do a larger area if using a frame.

Thanks again to everyone who participated. Great ideas one and all!

Hey everyone, I hope you're getting a good start to your week. I woke up yesterday morning to the most heavenly sunrise I have seen in a while. Of course I'd probably see more of them if I got up that early more often, but that's another story. The sky was beautiful with streaks of pink, gold and orange, slashing across a back drop of crystal blue and purple. With the beautiful fall leaves in the front, it was breathtaking. It filled me with all kinds of energy and good feelings and I hadn't even had my coffee yet! As you can see the image stuck with me. I hope you enjoy these sunrises from around the country.

Just Ask Kaye!

Q: How do you piece batting together to make a long strip? Do you zigzag it together flat or use a seam?

K: I think you should overlap and then zig zag. You could butt them together but the zig zag stitch may not catch both edges. It is best to overlap.

Q: How do you trim a baby quilt with satin?

K: If you use a wide satin ribbon, fold the ribbon in half, lengthwise, wrong sides together and press. Encase the edge of the quilt inside the folded satin and topstitch.

Q: How do you make chenille?

K: You can do this in five easy steps.

1) Stack 6 pieces of fabric right sides up with the largest piece on the bottom.

2) Pin the fabric pieces together. With a ruler and a washable fabric marker, draw a diagonal line in the center

from corner to corner. Continue drawing diagonal lines 3/4" of an inch apart until you have marked the entire

square.

3) With a sewing machine, stitch along all of the marked diagonal lines.

4) Using a rotary cutter, cut the center of each row. (Do NOT cut the bottom piece)

5) Once all of the rows have been cut, machine wash and dry the fabric piece.

Hey everyone, we're back on track, and glad to be back! We're in the celebrating mood today as we have a couple of birthdays in the house. So in honor of that, enjoy a few words of wisdom from a wonderful lady named Erma Bombeck. She always put things in a way I wish I had, enjoy!

If I Had My Life To Live Over

I would have gone to bed when I was sick, instead of thinking the earth would end if I weren't there for the day.

I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical.

When my kids wanted to play, there would never have been not now, I'm cleaning.

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute...look at it and really see it ... live it and never give it back. Stop sweating the small stuff. Erma Bombeck

Once in a while we get requests for definitions of certain words, or for a term someone heard used, but is not quite sure what it means. Quilters tend to be very creative in more then just quilting. Here are a few of those requests.

Q: I have heard the term, "bearding" so many times and still do not know what it means. Can you help?

K: Bearding is bits of the batting that are showing through the top and/or bottom layer of your quilt. This can often be avoided by buying a higher thread count fabric and using dark batting for darker fabrics. This is also usually associated with using synthetic batting.

Q: What is a burn test and why would you use it?

K: If you are not sure about your fabric, you can use a burn test to determine the type of fibers it is made up of. Just take a match and burn a sample of the fabric. When wool and cotton are burned, a gray smoke is emitted and an ash residue is left. Synthetic fibers will burn a black smoke and it might smell like burning plastic. Synthetic fibers will also leave a shiny black residue along the charred edges of the fabric.

Q: What is a "frogstitch" ?

K: This is a cute term, though I must say, not much fun! A frogstitch, as in rip-it, rip-it, rip-it, is when you have to undo a seam.

Q: What is a stiletto? I'm sure they aren't referring to high heels!

K: A stiletto is a sharp, pointed instrument that is used to ease and hold seams as they pass under the presser foot to keep them in place. Some people use a seam ripper although I have heard of people using a wooden meat skewer with great results. CLOVER makes a stiletto/awl that works wonderful as a stiletto, and is great as an awl to punch holes in leather and fabrics.

Hey everyone! I have been waiting all month to decorate our newsletter with cute Halloween pictures! I remember waiting as a kid for Halloween to get here. Of course, we didn't have the fancy costumes as they do today. We used our imagination and wore whatever we could find around the house. As I remember it, that was half the fun, talking with my Mom for hours about what to wear and how to wear it. Todays conveniences make it easier, but sometimes a bag of old clothes can be a lot of fun too. Have a Happy Halloween!

Just Ask Kaye!

Q: What is Broderie Perse?

K: Broderie Perse is a French term that translates as Persian Embroidery. This is an applique technique method where larger images are cut from a printed fabric and appliqued onto a new background fabric. This was especially popular in Europe when expensive prints came from SE Asia and India. By cutting them up and appliqueing them, it made them go further.

Q: What is a Charm Quilt?

K: A Charm Quilt is usually a pieced, one-patch made from many different fabrics, with no two fabrics alike. Traditionally, swaps and trades were made with friends to gather many fabrics.

Q: I am the fourth generation to inherit all the beautiful very fragile quilt squares in my family. They are crazy quilt fashion, backed by muslin but are too fragile to even think of putting together. Someone once told me you can make a fabric book of each one by a process museums use but I don't know where to look for the information. Some of these date back to the 1800's with satin squares depicting the event and date. Hopefully I can preserve them for the next generation but am now in my seventies and decided I had better get with the program and find out how to do it. Would appreciate any help you may be able to provide!

K: I suggest you contact AQS, American Quilter's Society, they do extensive research on quilt preservation. Just click the link to get to their site.

Online version:

Q: I am working on a project using a reverse applique technique. When the appliques are complete, I am finding it difficult to get all the paper off the back. Is there a real long term problem with allowing the paper to stay in there? Obviously it will not show once the batting and backing are attached to my block.

K: I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to leave the paper on. There are quite a few older quilts that I know of that still have paper in them. But if you are sewing the paper on, you might try using freezer paper and ironing it on instead.

Q: I used a washable marker and when I put my quilt in the washer, it still had marks on it. Is it too late to try to do anything besides sew some decorative stitches on it, or should I start a new block that took hours to embroider. Hope you can help.

K: I have heard but never tried myself, that hairspray is wonderful for getting ink out. You spray it on, then rinse in cold water. Repeat as necessary. People have assured me this is a fool proof method.

Q: Do you know of any natural way to protect my quilts from moths?

K: I have heard that the herb southernwood, is a natural way to keep moths away. Maybe your local herb store would have some.

Whether you are a beginning quilter or an expert in appliqué, Joan Shay with her 3-D Appli-bond© technique, will allow you to add exciting realistic three-dimensional appliqué to your quilts. This technique allows you to create dimension, without turning any edges. Comes complete with fabric requirements, paper templates, illustrated stitch sheet, and a list of all the items you need to make your project a success. Here, just in time for your Christmas enjoyment, is Santa Time and the Snowman Row Quilts! Brought to you by our friends at the Colorado Quilt Design Co., these patterns are everyone's favorites! For the next week when you buy one or both of them, your s/h will be only 99 cents, so order today!

Dress up your home for the holidays with any of the three easy-to-piece quilts featured in this pattern. The large, fat- quarter friendly quilt measures 62" x 78" and features four Santas, four trees, four stars and four sets of presents along with a double border with stars in the corners. Also included are directions for two smaller quilts.

Also featured for your early winter projects is our popular Snowman Row!

Too cold to go outside and build a snowman? Well, do it inside with our Snowman Row pattern! These are the cutest little guys around for this winter! Easy to piece, the Snowman Row quilt is sewn in seven vertical rows with a combination of eleven snowmen, three trees and fourteen pairs of mittens. Each of the blue, red, gold, and three of the green fabrics, are used in different combinations for the snowmen hats and vests, as well as the mittens. Use your creativity when combining your fabrics together to make a beautiful 62.5" x 80.5" quilt. This pattern also includes directions for a smaller quilt and wallhanging. A fun quilt with easy piecing and applique directions, it works and looks great with your cottons or flannels. Makes a wonderful gift! So when the weather outside is frightful, sit by the fire that's so delightful, and sew your Snowman Row!

Just Ask Kaye

Here is another tip submitted by one of our readers regarding ink on a quilt.

Reading your Q & A in regards to removing the marker ink from a quilt, etc., try soaking the fabric in milk. I used skim and let it soak for a few minutes. Rinsed with cold water. Worked great for me and thought your readers might be interested. Betty

Thanks for the tip Betty, I'm sure our readers will find it helpful.

Q: I know what a walking foot for my sewing machine is, however I have never heard of a rolling foot. What is it and is it used for anything besides sewing in the ditch?

A: A rolling foot is an alternative to an Ultraglide Foot. People use it for more control and less friction when sewing on imitation leather, vinyl, elastic, and velvet.

Q: I had to move and all my material is packed away in boxes. Some of them I put in storage, in HOT Texas weather. I didn't get climate controlled storage. So my question is, will it hurt the material to stay packed away in boxes, whether in the heat or not, for a long period of time?

A: As long as the fabric is dry, it shouldn't cause a problem. Don't store it in plastic, as it can't breathe. Pillowcases are good, as are sheets, or even boxes. It will be like Christmas for you when you finally get it all unpacked!

If you have a question for Kaye, just send it to the link below and we'll try our best to get it answered.

Just Ask Kaye!

Q: What kind of pen do you use to autograph a quilt?

K: I always use a pigma pen, available in most arts and crafts stores.

Q: Any suggestions on what to do with very old, hand sewn quilted blocks?

K: Make sure you show them off! Either mount them in a frame or put them in between two layers of glass and display them on a stand.

Q: How do you piece batting together to make a long strip? Do you zigzag it together flat or use a seam?

K: I think you should overlap and then zig zag. You could butt them together but the zig zag stitch may not catch both edges. It is best to overlap.

New Winner!

Drawn at random, let's give a big congratulations to, (drum roll) SHIRLEY GLASS of Lake Zurich, Illinois! She is the second winner of our drawing, during the early bird specials. An Autograph Series set by Kaye Wood, valued at $75, will be shipped to her this week! Make sure you check on Friday for our next lucky winner, it could be you!
