Hi Quilters!

Have you ever thought about making a photo quilt, or memory or picture quilt?

Make a special memory quilt-by adding fabric photos. Gather together some of your favorite photos and transfer the photo to fabric following the directions on the photo transfer fabric.
When your fabric photos are ready, it's time to have fun with them. I like to fussy-cut mine using one or more of the View & Do Shapes. My favorites for photos are the View & Do Hexagon and Octagon Shapes. Of course, fussy-cutting with the Heart Shape adds a little romance to the quilt. Each of the Shapes adds a little different theme to the quilt, so experiment with them all.
Here is a hint to help with the photo placement. Make several paper copies of the fabric photo; then fussy-cut each of the papers into one of the View & Do Shapes to see which is your favorite. You might want to mix and match the Shapes or stick to just one Shape.
The fabric photos can then be fused to a square background to make them easier to piece together. Or, with the Hexagon, Square and Octagon Shape one or more borders can be sewn to each block.
For a really fast quilt, cut the quilt top the desired size and fuse the photo fabrics randomly on the quilt top.
What a great anniversary quilt this would make!

Our Reader's Show and Tell....

I have been a 'wannabe' quilter for about 35 years and finally completed my first quilt for my 82 year old Mom. I have done lots of hand quilting - mostly around panels, but had never cut, sewed, sandwiched and completed a quilt from scratch. I started this in January for Mother's Day, thinking I had plenty of time. We own a resort on Kentucky Lake and I just couldn't get all the piecing, applique and quilting done in time. I finished it in August and named it EXPRESSION OF LOVE. It is totally machine pieced and quilted. I used a couple of decorative stitches and my embroidery machine to do the label. I even used my budding free-hand quilting skills from a class I took in July. Mom loved her quilt and I am so glad to give it to her, knowing she will cherish it as much as I do her! I WILL be doing lots more quilting - eventually. This is a picture of my Mom (Jane Clemons) and me on the day I gave her the quilt. It is a 50" by 50" lap quilt for her blue and yellow lake room....Marilyn

Click on the link below to see a picture of the back and label just because I’m kind of proud of it. Is that a quilting sin?!

I'm new at quilting. Freecycle is an awesome place to get someones unwanted fabric. Sometimes you can find new patterns already cut out that inspire you.....Jennifer

I keep a lint roller next to my sewing machine at all times. It helps to catch my snipped threads. It is also helpful when I have to rip out a seam, I can just roll it over the threads and it picks them out of the material.....Lisa

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

I am not a quilter, by definition. I only quilt occasionally, probably do sewing more often. Usually I will save up all my scraps, large or small, and recently I just realized that I might never have chance to use up my fabric strips. So, I decided to sew them up one afternoon, and convert them into a basket liner. Turned out pretty good.....Alina

Hi Quilters!

Some of you were familiar with Dawson, Kaye's Siberian Husky. Monday he had to be put down. He'd been sick for a long time and was not getting better, but to come to terms with the fact that that decision was made in a loving way and for his best interest will take awhile to sink in. We loved him, here in the office, well, every day was "bring your dog to work" day. We all love dogs and the dogs had so much fun playing together. Sure beats leaving them home all day, every day by themselves. If you've ever heard a husky "talk" you can appreciate how quiet it is around here. He was very vocal and always under foot. We loved that about him. He will be deeply missed for a long time.

Are you getting ready for the Holidays? If you've been with us for at least a year, you remember that every November we have three sales every week. One on Monday, the normal newsletter on Wednesday and a short newsletter on Friday. Get ready, it's going to be fun!

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

I have "old eyes" so I have to have someone thread needles for me too. What I do is have someone put about a dozen needles onto a spool of thread. That way, I can unwind the amount of thread I need and it will be threaded already. With that many needles on my thread it is a while before I have to ask someone with younger eyes to thread them for me again......Sharon

Recycle old plastic school pencil cases that your children don't use for school anymore. They are just the right size for carrying supplies (scissors, needles, thread, fabric pieces, etc) to use while waiting at the doctor's office, sitting at school games, or riding in the car on long/short trips. I feel productive, am not watching the clock, and thinking about what I could be doing somewhere else.....Cheryl

Using a Color Wheel....

Do you have trouble choosing colors for your quilts, or deciding which colors would look better with each other? Than maybe you need to use a color wheel. A color wheel is circular and divided into 12 equal sections, that display a different color in each section. All colors are made from the three primary colors; red, blue and yellow. These -colors are considered primary, because you cannot make them by mixing any other colors together. These three colors form a triangle after they are spaced equally apart on the wheel. To create the secondary colors, orange, green and violet, you add equal parts of two primary colors together. These lie in between the two primary colors that were added together to make that color. The secondary colors will form another triangle. The last 6 "pieces of the pie", are called tertiary colors. Tertiary meaning third in rank, order, formation, etc. When you add equal amounts of one primary and one secondary color, that color becomes the tertiary color, or the color between.

So they go in order like this when added; red/orange, orange/yellow, yellow/green, blue/green, blue/violet, and red/violet. Especially when you are trying to find a series of colors that will go well together, a color wheel can be a huge help! Here are some basic color schemes.

Monochrome-All one color, or different shades, tones or tints of one color.
Analogous-Generally, any three colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, that go well together. For example, blue will go well with blue-purple and blue-green.
Complimentary-Complimentary colors are those that are placed directly opposite each other on the color wheel. The opposing colors make for greater stability and contrast.
Split complimentary-This is the same as the complimentary, but you would add two colors on either side of the secondary complimentary color.
Triadic-Use any three colors which form a triangle on the color wheel, spaced equally apart.
Tetradic (double complimentary)-You pick a complimentary pair of opposite colors, then a second pair to use following. For a good balance use the same amount of cool and warm colors.

A color wheel is a great visual to see the difference and similarities between colors. Seeing colors in this context can help you to make a better judgement when it comes to picking our your quilt fabrics.

My grandson wanted a wallhanging for a computer teacher he had that year. The kids were always going back and forth about PC verses Mac. At the awards night he surprised her with this wallhanging/lap quilt. He had 12 pages of blog on PC verses Mac and he got it down to 9 pages. They are interesting to read. We just tied the quilt because I was running out of time. He seems to wait till last minute for something. I enjoyed doing this.....CL

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

When I make a quilt, I take the left over pieces and cut them into 2" or 1-1/2" squares and put them in pretty hat boxes. When I have two hat boxes filled with 2" squares, I have enough to make a twin size quilt for our local children's shelter. When I have one hat box filled with 1-1/2" squares, I have enough to make a wheel chair or lap quilt for our local Veteran's home. The people at the Veteran's home have so very little and they have done so much for our families and country. We should all as quilters seek out the closest one and get involved in any way we can. Even if you don't have time to make a quilt for one of our Veterans they will also take personal items like soaps, toothpaste, shampoo, adult diapers etc. Here in my local area each veteran has about $35.00 a month to buy all of the personal needs they may have. Well enough of my soapbox babbling. Just try to get busy for them like they did for us....Tina

Apple Recipes!

Best ever Apple Pie and I use ready made Pillsbury Crusts

  • 6 large Golden Delicious Apples (6-7 C sliced)
  • 1 3/4 C Granulated Sugar

  • 1 tbsp Water

Mix altogether in bowl and place in pie pan prepared.

Drop small amounts of margarine or butter in spots around the pie mixture.

Add several drops of Almond extract flavoring

Cover with top crust, cut leaf design in top with air hole.

Scissor Tips....

As much as scissors cost these days, it's important to know how to care for them the right way. Plus, the better the care, the longer they'll last and the better results you'll get from them!

So here are a few tips on how to care for your scissors.

1. Keep your scissors in a cool, dry, safe place.
2. Regularly wipe the blades with a light coating of sewing machine oil, to prevent rust or corrosion. Don't forget a drop where the blades come together by the screw. After oiling, cut on some scrap fabric to remove any excess oil.
3. Your scissors can be washed with soap and water, but you have to dry them thoroughly and oil them too.
4. After each use, wipe off the blades to prevent build up on the blades and screw area.
5. Handle your scissors with care. When you drop them, it can knock them out of alignment, break the tips and nick the edges.
6. Respect your scissors and their uses, they are not for metal, plastic, etc. Keep the ones you use to cut your fabric in a certain spot, and use them for only this purpose.

    Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

My best quilting tip would have to be not to mix different brands of rulers when cutting fabrics for your quilts. It may seem trivial, but doing this may affect how your pieces fit together. I always use my 1/4 inch sewing machine foot and I press as I go.....Annette

    About Thread....

Specialty threads are wonderful to use when you want a different look and texture to your project. With all the beautiful colors, thread can really make your work stand out and be noticed. But as with most things, you have to play with them a bit to get used to them, and find out what works best to get the maximum success. Here are some things that might help you. Plan on adjusting your tension and needle positions. Most of the time this will have to be done, and don't be afraid to try different settings! The look and effect will vary and you might find a new one you like. When you do find one that pleases you, jot it down along the with settings. That way you can refer back when necessary. Take it slow, it's not a race and specialty threads are a bit more challenging to work with. Check your needle to make sure it's big enough to accommodate your thread and sharp. Specialty threads don't have to be a headache, if you remember to have a little patience and find the best settings for you.

About the Lazy Girl Handy Tabs....

You can add a hanging option to our purses and totes if you want to – it’s completely optional and depends on how you plan to use them. A short ribbon and a clip are nice to hang our smaller bags from your purse handle. A longer ribbon might be nice for a wrist strap. And with a long ribbon and a clip, you can feed the clip through a belt loop and clip it to the ribbon creating a loop. Our Handy Tabs are finished on all edges and ready to sew into place.

A detachable shoulder strap and two easy-to-sew zippers make these transformations possible. A tie closure and decorative pinwheel border keep it simple and stylish.

Let's say you want to use your daytime bag to go traveling and need room for some extras such as makeup and medicines. The "Plump Bottom Bag" hides a zipper (easy-to-sew method!) that expands the walls of the bag to accommodate more than you might expect. The optional top magnetic snaps also increase the volume of the bag so you are ready for anything.

    Did You Know....

You should always sign and label your quilt? If by chance it gets lost or stolen, these little things can make a big difference when it comes to retrieving your quilt! Here are a couple of tips.
Sign your quilts in a hidden place. If someone steals your quilt, they will surely try to remove your identifying label. If you sign your quilt in a hidden place, you can still ID your quilt if need be. Some places you might try is under a hanging sleeve or in the seam allowance. Permanent marker works well and should be hidden enough not to be noticed unless you need it to be. Just don't forget to write it down in your quilt journal or quilt documentation, where it was you put it.
Label your quilt. Attach your label before it is quilted so the label is also quilted into the fabric. If someone attempts to try and remove it, it will be hard without damaging the quilt.
When you do the backing of your quilt, piece it. People might be able to describe the front of your quilt to try and claim it as their own, but may not pay attention to the fact that it's pieced in the back. This will make it harder to describe unless you are the one who made it! When you take pics of your quilt, don't forget to take one of the pieced backing.
You may not ever lose or have one of your quilts stolen, but it is better to be safe than sorry. The best way to do this is to be prepared. If it does happen, all of these things will make it that much easier to track down and claim your quilt if it is found.

I made this quilt as a gift for my husband's nephew's wedding in September 2011. I had seen the quilt made up in my LQS, and I fell in love with it at first sight. Fortunately, the fabrics were all on sale at the time! It came together quite quickly, and I had a local quilter do the quilting on her long-arm. It measures 50" square - just perfect for the newlyweds to snuggle under!

    I've Learned....

Heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.
You shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret, it could change your life forever.
Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.
Sometimes you have to put the individual ahead of their actions.
Many things can be powered by the mind, the key is self-control

    Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

I am a beginner - The best thing I've learned is that pinning your pieces will help your quilt top to be neater than not pinning it. This may not be needed by experienced quilters though....Sarah

Perhaps if the quilting community reaches out through their contacts, the quilt can be recovered. If you have any information that might help in finding Sharon's quilt, relay the information to Sharon at her email address: myfaithfirst@...

    Photographing Your Quilts....

Alright, you've just spent weeks, maybe months making your quilt and now it's finally done! Time to take some pictures of your finished product! Whether it be for insurance purposes, an appraising, your quilt journal, whatever, a nice picture of your work is always a good thing to have. But if you're like the majority of us, you're not necessarily a photographer. Never fear, you can still take awesome pics of your beautiful handiwork. Here are a few tips to help you achieve that great picture!

    1) Make sure your quilt is straight. Stand right in front of it and try to focus your camera on the center of your quilt. Different angles are sometimes done, but if you don't know what you're doing, your quilt can come out looking distorted and crooked.
    2) Use a backdrop. If you have a solid colored wall or a solid drop cloth, use that to shoot your quilt on. Your quilt has plenty of detail and you want those details to stand out, not to mention your colors and patterns. Backgrounds that are busy tend to take the focus away from your quilt instead of enhancing it. So when possible, use a solid backdrop to get at least one pic of just your entire quilt.
    3) Try different shots. After you get your backdrop shot, then you can be creative. Drape your quilt on the bed, the back of a sofa or chair. Take a pic of yourself with your quilt, it'd make a great photo-op!
    4) Since you probably don't have professional lighting just laying around ready to be used for your pics, consider taking some outside! Outside lighting is usually the best for bringing out colors and distinctions. Be careful not to take it in direct sunlight, which can be a little too harsh, or heavy overcast days, when it's hard for the sun to shine. A slightly overcast day or an open area that tends to be shady, would be perfect for taking your quilt pics! Drape them on a clothesline or over a railing for a wonderful "outdoorsy" look!
    5) If at all possible, use a digital camera. Most digitals have the capability to "zoom in" so you can get some great detail shots. Also, you can preview your pics instantly to avoid mistakes and make any necessary changes. You can also take many pics with a digital camera and just delete the ones you don't really care for. Then when you go to print them out, if they still aren't quite the way you expected, most developing places have different options to enhance your pics to get the best image possible!
    6) Don't forget to take pics of the back of your quilt, and any other distinguishing features you have done to it. If by chance it becomes lost or stolen, the more details and pics you have of your quilt, the easier it will be to identify and hopefully get it back to its rightful owner...YOU!

    Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

I am a brand new quilter as well. The best thing I've learned so far is that it's better to over pin something than under pin it! It's really annoying pulling out three feet of stitching because you didn't pin well enough. Don't ask me how I know.....Cassandra
