Hey everyone! I hope you're having a wonderful week! Things are pretty quiet here as Kaye and some of the girls are in Paducah, KY and out of the office this week. It's like part of my family is gone! Did you know that most people spend more time with the people they work with, than their own families? I guess I'm pretty lucky to have the co-workers that I do! Here are some words of wisdom I came across, that actually made sense to me. Hope you enjoy them!
The more you give, the more you get. The more you laugh, the less you fret. The more you do unselfishly, the more you live abundantly. The more of everything you share, the more you'll always have to spare. The more you love, the more you'll find, that life is good and friends are kind. For only what we give away, enriches us from day to day.

1) An easy way to mark a quilt for quilting without making lines on the quilt. Use Press & Seal paper, regular weight not freezer. Place the paper directly on the place where you will quilt and trace the quilting stencil with a sharpie pen. It is better to put only the paper on a hoop for the time being. You can quilt right through the paper and when finished, easily tear it away. No lines on your quilt to get rid of. Hilda P.
2) I am making a Celtic block and while cutting my bias strips, our instructor told us to spray starch them. Well, doing each strip separately was a pain in the neck and time consuming! I threw all of my strips into a Ziplock bag and sprayed starch into the bag. I gave it a good shake and let it sit for a couple of hours. The starch was evenly distributed and there was no mess. Then I put it through a bias maker and ironed them. Just be sure to keep the bag closed or they will dry out. If you can't use them right away, put them in the frig, so they won't go moldy. Hope you can use this little hint! H.S.
3) When I baste my quilt, I make sure to use threat that is a contrasting color, so I can be sure to get all of the basting threads out. Nora, MI
4) I made a nifty little portable ironing board that I take to my classes. It was very easy, all I did was glue cotton batting to an empty fabric bolt. I covered that with a piece of cotton fabric and glued the edges. Light to carry and always comes with me. Heather, NB

This quilt was made for a cancer benefit. It brought $1,200.00. I loved making this quilt, it is the Folded Hexagon Star from the Stars Made Simple book by Kaye Wood. The fussy cutting was the best! Thelma

I had made a load of Dresden Plates and a bunch of Sussex Puffs. I placed the Sussex Puffs in the middle of the Dresden Plates. Being new to patchwork, I didn't know what to do next! At our monthly P.Q. meeting, there was a super American speak called Dawn Cameron-Dick. She suggested the idea for the nine patch corners, the borders and the sashings. Now I have this "proud to have made it" quilt! Beryl

I helped one of my friends make this 50th wedding anniversary picture quilt, of their family! I thought she did great for this being her first quilt and my first picture quilt! Cathie

Hey everyone! It has been a simply gorgeous week here in Michigan! I forget during winter, how much I miss waking up to the sun shining in my bedroom window so bright. How the dew droplets glisten like diamonds on the blades of grass and how clean and fresh it smells, when you first walk outside in the morning! 1) I try to plan 1 or 2 projects ahead and cut them all out at the same time. I just toss them in a project bag with the directions, thread, etc. That way if I go somewhere and want to take a project to work on, its all set and ready to go. Plus, I only clean the mess from cutting one time instead of two or three times. Rachael, AK

2) In order to get my sewing room cleaned up in a jif, I keep my handheld vacuum next to me in the sewing room. Small scraps, thread pieces, etc., come up easily and then I don't have to worry about tracking it through the rest of my house. Melanie, AZ

3) When I need to get ink out of fabric or clothing, I just spray the area with hairspray and wash as usual. You'll be amazed at how it lifts that ink out! Brenda, MI

4) I use the plastic container from my Tic Tacs to store my old needles and pins. Works like a charm and then I throw the whole thing away when full. Any mint container will work, but the Tic Tac one is a perfect needle size. Clare, MS

I always wanted to do a Lonestar quilt, so I bought a book and finally made one! The seams were a challenge, but pins in at 1/4" worked to line them up! Elaine

This is my first quilt, which I made for my daughter and her husbands 20th anniversary. With the encouragement from my sister-in-law, I was able to do this and I can happily say, it won't be my last! Kathy

My sister-in-law does a lot for our family. She has cared for her parents, children and grandchildren for many years. My daughters Annelise and Aubrey, helped me make a special quilt for her. Annelise appliquéd some of the blocks and Aubrey appliquéd all of the stems. I finished the appliqué and hand quilted the queen size quilt. The girls were ages 18 and 11 at the time, and I am very proud of them! Everyone is proud of how the quilt turned out. This is a picture of myself with my sister-in-law Rachael and my daughter, with the quilt. Anita

Well, I finally did it this weekend. I've been putting it off for awhile now, because frankly, the job was way bigger then me! But I got up Saturday, pushed up my sleeves, armed myself with a big cup of coffee and started! Sorting through my daughters clothes that would be! I went through tubs, clothing racks, dressers, you name it, I sorted through it! Checking out the spring and summer, packing up the winter, passing on the items that didn't fit or just couldn't be worn, because they are sooo not cool anymore! Not my words, I promise! I really don't know how my child ends up with so many clothes! I'm not a clothes horse never have been and it's not like I shop on even a monthly basis for clothing! I'm not one to give into trends or tears, when something comes out that all the girls have and she just has to have it! I'm not that mother at all! Yet, each season, she ends up with more clothes, than I remember having my whole childhood! Now mind you, we do have the "pass it on tradition" meaning she has an older cousin and a younger one, that we get from and pass clothes down to. But that only happens about once a year. So, as I sat and pondered this, my daughter came running up the stairs, excited to show me the new shirt grandma had just bought for her! I think I'm getting closer to the culprit all the time! 1) To keep threads from migrating from my sewing room into the whole house, I use an olefin indoor-outdoor welcome mat, placed in the doorway. It's fuzzy-type surface collects all the loose threads and you can find the mats in many different designs. Gloria G. from Olivia, MN

Show & Tell

The mother of a friend of my daughter, was given the blocks in this quilt by her grandmother. She gave them to her daughter and asked if I would make a quilt for her mother. The English Lady blocks were a different size then the blocks with squares. In order to avoid trimming, I added materials. There are stitch holes in the background of the lady blocks, presumably the materials were from sacks. The square blocks were sewn with very little stitches and some squares were pieced, while some were on the bias. It was a fun project! Virginia

Kaye's show on how to make the Morning Glory quilt, inspired me to make 2 quilts. I made a lap/blanket quilt for my Babcia's (Grandma in Polish) birthday, using pinks and burgundies. Then I made a queen size quilt for friend of the family, Mrs. Pat, who loves blue! The design is great since it's quick and easy to complete! Both quilts took me 6 weeks to complete them. Trisha

I am an 8 month survivor of breast cancer and have been making pink ribbon quilts, as well as other quilts. This year I have entered a team, to walk in our local Relay For Life Cancer Walk, on May 12th. I made this quilt, and our team is raffling it off, with all of the proceeds going to the Walk. I did the quilting with two of the decorative stitches on my sewing machine! Margaret

Hey everyone! Memorial Day is coming up, as I'm sure you know. A lot of people think of it as a kick off to summer. Kids see it as being almost out of school. Some people who work, think of it as a 3 day weekend if they're lucky. In all actuality, Memorial Day is set aside to honor U.S. men and women, who have died in military service for our country. Also known as Decoration Day in the past, it first began to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. The first Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5th, 1868 by General John Logan. It was first observed on May 30th, 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. If you have kids or grandkids, make sure you tell them about Memorial Day and how it started and why we celebrate it. Tell them about the people who gave their lives in the past and still do now, to ensure the freedoms we all enjoy, and sometimes take for granted. Have a great week and enjoy Memorial Day!

Did You Know?
Certain colors can have certain effects on you? Not just physically, but mentally too. So if you're planning a quilt for say your bedroom, it's good to use colors that are tranquil and peaceful. If you really want your wallhanging to make a statement, try some bolder colors. Here is a list of colors and the different effects they have on us.

• Violet: Suppresses appetite and provides a peaceful surrounding.
• Yellow: Energizes and relieves depression, stimulates your appetite and helps to improve your memory.
• Red: Stimulates your brain wave activity, increases blood pressure and heart rate. Good for those afternoon tired spells.
• Black: If you want to show strength, power and self confidence, this is the color for you.
  Green: Relaxing and soothing mentally as well as physically. It helps those suffering from anxiety, nervousness and depression.
• Orange: Stimulates your appetite and digestive system and also energizes you.
• Pink: This color relaxes muscles, relieves tension and tends to be very soothing. Great in diet therapy as an appetite suppressant.
• Blue: Makes us calm, lowers our blood pressure and decreases respiration. Gives you an overall feeling of wellness.

So there you have it! Maybe to help manage our lives, all we need to do is introduce a little more color!

Although I don't get to quilt as often as I would like, I did complete this quilt for my daughter on the occasion of her 40th birthday. When she was about 7, she made me a homemade Mother's Day card. Using little pieces of loose leaf paper, she created 16 little cards that she put into an envelope. I treasured that card with all my heart! When searching for something special for her birthday, I woke up one morning, with the idea for this quilt. I took the papers to a copy center, enlarged them and used a light box to carefully transfer her masterpiece to fabric. I then used 2 strands of floss to do the redwork on each piece. Needless to say, this quilt was a big hit! Mary

This quilt is one I just finished embroidering and quilted. I know it isn't a pieced quilt, but I enjoyed doing something different, and it is all done by hand. I started it when we were camping the last two years and finished the embroidery last fall. I started quilting it at the end of October, and finished it this week! Connie

This wallhanging is called Wildflowers and is made of many batik fabrics. The designs are applied using my embroidery machine. It stitches a dye line first and then you place your cut fabrics inside the dye line. The embroider machine then stitches all the beautiful satin and other stitches around the design! Kathy

She knows how to "make it happen" and she does just that, in this delightful book!

Chapter 1 serves as an introduction and begins by helping you decide if you are a pointed or pointless quilter. Next, you'll find a list of the supplies that you will need to get started, along with some really good advice on how much fabric to buy, and how to feed your fabric stash. All this info is delivered with a nice blend of wit and wisdom. There are over 20 projects included in the book ranging from "No Problem" quilts to more complicated star patterns. There are small quilts, large quilts, pillows, potholders and table toppers. All patterns have accuracy built into the construction process, making them virtually fool-proof! Did You Know?
Did you know that if you have a fabric and you're not sure what it's made of, you can do a simple burn test to determine what it is? Just use a small square of fabric and tweezers, and have a place to put your fabric as it is burning. You'll be surprised how distinct each fabric is, so read on.

A lot of the man made fibers, have the same distinctions and will be harder to categorize. When you try the burn test on a fabric blend, it is supposed to burn in the way each fabric would if it was an individual piece. This test is not as reliable with blends.

Donna Lea, my dearest friend of over 40 years, made this quilt for me as a gift. We would sit and sew and talk, while our kids played. Donna Lea lives in PA now, but we are still best friends. She is an accomplished quilter and has won ribbons for her work. I have told her many time how I envy the beautiful work she does. I cried, I was so excited when I received this quilt and it now hangs in my living room. Every time I see it, I think of how blessed I am to have Donna Lea as a best friend.

This quilt was made by my 5 year old daughter Kaitlyn. She free form cut the flower stems and appliquéd the whole thing in 3 days. She also put rhinestones on the dragonfly for eyes. She won a super ribbon at our bi-annual guild, quilt show. I am so proud of her. Stephanie

The quilt with ducks on it, I made for our friends new grandson. I saw a little duck in a coloring book and made the appliqué's from that, and then designed the quilt. It was given to them at a baby shower. It sure received a lot of "oohs and aahs" and lots of people wanted to see it up close for themselves. The other quilt label was printed on the computer, using printable fabric, and hand appliquéd on. It was also sewn on with the quilting I did, after the quilt was layered. It is a pattern from Fons & Porter. Ann
