Kaye Wood's Quilting Newsletter

Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***Tuesday, December 6th.***

Hey everyone! As you can tell, we're feeling very winter like around here! I guess that's not too surprising when you live in Michigan and it's the beginning of December. Mother Nature has been all to willing to show us who has the upper hand here! But...with Christmas only 19 days away, a little snow is not unheard of. Did you catch my casual little plug about Christmas? What that means is too much to do and not nearly enough time to do it! Each year I tell myself I'm going to scale down, but how do you scale down Christmas? Do you cut family, presents or decorations? Furthermore, if I'm being honest with myself, do I really want to scale down? Isn't the crazy, pandemonium just a part of it? Well, it is in my world, so if you can't beat them, you might as well join them! Call me crazy #1!

My Christmas wish for you, my friend, is not a simple one.

For I wish you hope and joy and peace, days filled with warmth and sun.

I wish you love and friendship too, throughout the coming year.

Lots of laughter and happiness, to fill your world with cheer.

May you count your blessings, one by one, and when totaled by the lot,

May you find all you've been given, to be more than what you sought.

May your journeys be short, your burdens light, may your spirit never grow old.

May all your clouds have silver linings, and your rainbows pots of gold.

I wish this all and so much more, may all your dreams come true.

May you have a Merry Christmas friend, and a happy New Year too.

Welcome to the first installment, of the brand new Show & Tell! Thank you Hilda L., for sharing your wonderful quilt and the memories that go with it!

I made this quilt in memory of my mother. The dresses and hats of the Old fashioned Girl are feed bag fabric from the 1940's. My mother made me dresses and skirts from feed bags. It is hand appliqued, embroidered, and quilted. I now have it hanging in my family room.

Hey everyone! A very happy 2006 to all. I do love ringing in the New Year. Being with my family, great food, watching the ball drop, staying up late, it's all good! There's only one thing I don't like about it, and that's people asking what resolutions I made for the upcoming year. Why? Because I just can't stick to them, so I vowed a long time ago not to make them. Some people might consider this a cop out and they're probably right, but that's just way too much of a commitment for me to make. So instead of disappointing myself, I just avoid the whole thing. Thinking about that while I was writing this, I did feel I should have some words of wisdom, guidance or deep thought for our readers, so I scoured the internet. Finally on, can you believe it, a resolutions site, I found the missive below. No one had signed their name to take any credit for it, but I felt I had finally found a few words I could live by.

RESOLUTIONS FOR AVOIDING MISERY

Choose to love, rather than hate. ~ Choose to smile, rather than frown. ~ Choose to build, rather than destroy. ~ Choose to persevere, rather than quit. ~ Choose to praise, rather than gossip. ~ Choose to heal, rather than wound. ~ Choose to give, rather than take. ~ Choose to act, rather than delay. ~ Choose to forgive, rather than curse. ~ Choose to pray, rather than despair. Brand New Special!

Are you ready to Stack-n-Whack? Well, Bethany Reynolds is just the one to show you how! What is the Stack-n-Whack method? It is an easy way to create blocks with unique kaleidoscope designs. With Bethany's step-by-step instructions, you'll be stacking-n-whacking in no time! This book includes ideas for selecting fabric, supply list, along with full directions and charts to make the 12 new quilt patterns in this book. The beautiful pictures will inspire quilters of any level with patterns for all skill levels. Some of the techniques include butterflies, fans, flowers, optical illusions and many more!

When you order this book, you can also purchase the Stack-n-Whack 45 degree Triangle Tool for half price! This tool goes hand in hand with Bethany's Stack-n-Whackier and Stack-n-Whack books! What a strange winter this has been! Above average temps, and rain! What's that about? Rain? In January??

While this latest blast of winter isn't quite a picturesque as these pictures, driving on it seems like it is! While it is only rain, when it hits roads that are already frozen, well, it doesn't stay rain very long, and that makes for some interesting driving.

Show & Tell

This week our featured Show & Tell person is Donna C. Donna tells us this is her very first finished project. It's a beautiful quilt Donna and we appreciate you sharing it with us.

This is a picture of my first finished project. It is in honor of my Mom, she passed away in 2004. She and I shared a lot of conversations about quilting and she made 8 beautiful quilts, for graduation gifts for her grandkids. I finished this project in 2005, one year after Mom was gone. Quilting is my retirement hobby and I truly love it. The quilt is called Victorian Sampler.

I don't know about anyone else, but by the time January hits here at Kaye Wood Inc., you've got some girls who are sick and tired of winter! Lack of sunshine, shorter days and cold, really put the wear and tear on us. So for us and for you, here are some great pick me ups to beat the winter blues! Try them out, it could really help.

1)Wrap up and go for a brisk walk or try a winter sport. Exercise is a sure fire way to beat the blues in any weather!

2)Learn something new. Start a new hobby and make a new friend.

3)Wear bright colors. Adding color to your life, will really give you a lift!

4)Bring color into where you live. Paint a room, buy flowers, anything to set a cheerful tone.

5)Be good to you! Eat right, sleep in, take time for that long bubble bath, anything to give yourself a little lift!

I don't know if these will all help, but they certainly can't hurt! We're all going to try these and we hope you do too!

New from Ami Simms is this announcement about the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative, a program to raise awareness and fund research for Alzheimer's disease. This will be a two part program with one being a traveling art quilt exhibit, interpreting Alzheimer's in fiber art. This exhibit will tour the US for three years. The second part will be an on-going sale of small art quilts, with all proceeds going to Alzheimer research.I'm sure we all know someone who has been affected by this terrible disease, so this is a wonderful way to show your creativity and support a worthy cause. You can submit a quilt for the traveling exhibit or donate any small quilts, no bigger than 9" x 12", for the auction. Just click on the link for more information on how to submit or donate your quilt.

Show & Tell

This week our featured Show & Tell person is Dorothy M. She has one lucky grandson to receive a beautiful quilt like this! Thank you for sharing it with us Dorothy!

"Here is a picture of a quilt I made for my grandson, Zachary, who is 20 months old and is in his own bed now pending the birth of his little brother in March. As Zachary is such a "boy", I decided that trucks suited him. I started this quilt in early October, and wanted it to be completed by Christmas when I visited my daughter in Ontario, Canada. Each truck is composed of about 38 individual pieces. I had a great time making this quilt, and I worked nearly round the clock to complete it on time. It was quilted by machine doing the "stitch in the ditch" method. The windshields and steering wheels were hand embroidered. My most proud project yet."

Kaye Wood's Quilting Newsletter Tuesday, January 24th.
Well, it's back! I thought it might be gone for good, but I should've known
better! Winter reminded us who actually was the boss on Saturday, dumping
about 9 inches of snow in our area! Now I know what you're thinking. "What
snow, in Michigan, in January? That's just crazy!" I guess it was really
beautiful though, for about 15 minutes! By the time you shovel, plow and dig
out of the stuff, your appreciation level goes down tremendously! But at
least the snowmobilers, skaters, snow festival people, etc. are jumping with
joy and all is right in their world. I figure it'll take till springtime to
make it right in mine. I'm waiting...patiently!

Last week for this special!
Have you ever thought about quilting your own quilt top but have been too
intimidated to try? With the Bold Beginnings Block Pack, you won't believe
how easy it can be! Whether you are a beginner or experienced, hand or
machine quilter, these continuous line quilting stencils are for you! This
pack has 30 quilting designs ranging from 4-9 inches. Just pick out your
design and trace it onto the quilting paper. Stitch through several layers
of paper without thread to perforate. Pin your papers to the quilt and sew
following the perforated design that you picked out! When done, tear off the
paper and you have a perfectly quilted piece! It's just that easy and now
when you purchase the block pack for $15.95, you can purchase the roll of
Golden Threads Quilting Paper for 1/2 price! This paper comes on a
convenient roll and measures 12 inches wide by 20 yards long, plenty to make
several layers for several quilts. For under $20, this is definitely more
cost effective than sending your quilt out to be done. But most of all, you
will have done it all by yourself! Order today!

Quilts For A Cause
New from Ami Simms is this announcement about the Alzheimer's Art Quilt
Initiative, a program to raise awareness and fund research for Alzheimer
disease. This will be a two part program with one being a traveling art
quilt exhibit, interpreting Alzheimer's in fiber art. This exhibit will tour
the US for three years. The second part will be an on-going sale of small
art quilts, with all proceeds going to Alzheimer research. I'm sure we all
know someone who has been affected by this terrible disease, so this is a
wonderful way to show your creativity and support a worthy cause. You can
submit a quilt for the traveling exhibit or donate any small quilts, no
bigger than 9" x 12", for the auction. Just click on the link for more
information on how to submit or donate your quilt.

Kaye Wood's Quilting Newsletter

Hey everyone! Let me start by apologizing for the problem with the newsletter last week. We had some little gremlins or something messing with it. I'm sure this week will be much better.

Well, January is officially out of here and let me be the first to tell you, there are 11 months till Christmas! I know, it's pushing it, but when you think of it in the terms of starting and finishing new projects, it's not that far away. So now is a great time to start a project journal and to do list. Kind of like a "honey-do" list, only for yourself. Start jotting down the projects you have to finish, which ones you'd like to start, what supplies you have and what you might need, you get the idea. After you get this all done, then chuck it and start on your wish list! These are the dream projects you might not necessarily need or have in mind for someone, but they beckon you every time you see a certain fabric, pattern or book. Delight and lose yourself in these projects, you deserve it! After all, Christmas is 11 months away, plenty of time to finish that "honey-do" list!

You Asked For It!

I know we have premiered this many times, but we never seem to run out of people asking for it. Here it is, some great tips on how to store your quilts.

1. Quilts should be aired or vacuumed before storing. Use a low suction hand vac with a nylon screen to protect it from harmful pull. When airing, be sure the quilt is laying flat, protected from soil, and not in direct sunlight.

2. The ideal storage is a flat surface, properly lined with acid free material, large enough to have its own space.

3. When folding, use crumpled acid-free tissue in the folds for support. Refold the quilt every 3-6 months to minimize permanent fold lines. Rolling quilts is an option, but it does place stress on the entire quilt.

4. If the storage unit is made of wood or cardboard, it should be lined with several layers of washed, 100% cotton fabric. This is necessary to protect the fabric from chemicals in the wood or paper. Cotton liner should be washed semi-annually.

5. Covers of pre washed 100% cotton sheeting, muslin, pillow cases, or acid-free tissue paper are strongly recommended. These materials allow air to pass through and keep light and dust out. Plastic is not advised.

6. Keep the storage area clean and insect free. The herb Artemisia is a natural pesticide. Hang in the storage area or in a small bag. Do not let the bag touch the quilts!

You Were Wondering

We have had a few people wondering why, "Ask Kaye" hasn't been in the newsletter for a while. Well, to be honest, we haven't been getting any questions so we thought everyone must be doing alright. But remember, in case you do have any, here is the link.

mailto:terrye@...?subject=questions

Here is another question we get quite often.

How do you select guests for your TV show?

We select teachers who have written patterns or books, that will spark the interest of our viewers. Whether it be a new technique or a twist on an old one, a fun pattern or interesting book, it is always considered carefully before being put on the show. If you are a teacher, please feel free to send us your product for review.

Show & Tell

This week our featured Show & Tell person is Julie D. She calls her first project here a mutant. I think most of our readers would say it's just beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with us Julie!

The first piece that I ever quilted is a mutant horror that now inhabits the end of my king sized bed called Bed Quilt. It has two redeeming graces, it keeps my feet warm at night and doesn't show cat hair. Bed Quilt began in a beginners' quilting class I took. We were supposed to make a 24" x 24" country-style wall hanging, in a set of patriotic colors that I didn't like, so I thought I'd improvise. One thing led to another in the fabric store, and by the time the class met again the following week, I had enough squares to wallpaper the meeting room. Then the dumb thing I did was to use an old pair of drapes to set the squares. It stretched EVERY which way when I cut it. Good thing they were living room drapes. I thought the quilting instructor would faint when all the good little students brought in their nice, patriotic, country-style wall hangings and then I unrolled...Bed Quilt. That was pretty much the one and only time I've taken a sewing class of any kind. I'm probably blacklisted somewhere for that one.

Hey everyone! It's good to be back on track. It seemed really strange not having a newsletter to write last week. It's almost the end of February and I'm yearning for spring in a bad way! I don't know, it could be the ice storm we received, dumping about 5 inches of ice on us at the end of last week, or maybe it's just time for some nice weather! Either way, I'm wishing it upon us and doing what I can to hurry things along. Kaye promised when she returned from Arizona she was bringing warm weather and sunshine with her. I definitely intend on holding her to that!

Kaye Wood's Quilting Newsletter

Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.***Wednesday, March 8th.

Hey everyone! I hope this week finds you all doing reasonably well. I'm really pulling for spring, as you already know, in a very big way. I thought if I wished on a bunch of rainbows it might help. Well, if nothing else, they are very fetching, right?

We are actually in the midst of a real heat wave here in Northern Michigan! It's supposed to get to 50 degrees here by Friday! I'm not quite sure how I'll react when I don't have to preheat my car for 30 minutes! Of course that means nothing in the bigger scheme of things. 50 degrees one day is only a brief reprieve, as anyone familiar with Michigan can tell you. It can turn on you in a very short time, I've seen it and documented it! So, me being the optimist, I'm trying to live by the old saying, "Be thankful for what you have when you have it". I'm not quite sure if they actually meant weather when they made up that one, but when you live in Michigan, it definitely works!

Hey everyone, here is a fun scrappy quilt you will have a blast making, called the Rag Time Quilt! Gone is the worry about which color or fabric is next to each other. Gone is the wondering if a plaid is straight or not. This quilt is so easy, it's not necessary to be perfect in cutting, pinning or piecing, because frayed edges hide a multitude of mistakes. Can it get any simpler? Plus, you do not want to pre-wash your fabric as with other projects, you do it afterwards to give it that fun and frilly, frayed look! Comes with complete instructions for two different sized quilts, right down to how many of what sized squares you need, to complete your project. How nice it would be to snuggle up in this fluffy, warm quilt! For more information, click the link below.

Q: Our church group had a hand pieced quilt top, machine quilted. The quilt top is about 2" squares and some of the fabric is not the best. We are now having trouble with wavy bindings. Any hints on how to fix this problem?

K: Cut the bindings on the straight of grain and sew with the binding on top. Make sure the binding is full as it is wrapped around. That should help with the problem.

Q: I am trying to find a way to print a drawing onto black fabric so I can stitch the drawing. Do you know of a method where I can actually draw, or print the design/picture on black fabric in white ink?

K: There are many quilting transfer pencils and chalks offered by Clover or Sulky to draw on fabrics. They come in white, silver and many other pastel colors. Most will brush or wash off. You should be able to pick one up at any quilt or craft store.

Q: Some of the fabric I have purchased for scrap quilts seems nice until it is laundered. Afterwards, it becomes real thin and flimsy. Should this be used in a quilt or would it be advisable to just count it as a learning experience. Would it help if I used a very thin stabilizer or interfacing? Any other ideas would be appreciated.

K: If this is meant to be a good quilt, I would chalk it up to experience. It will have no lasting power to it and when you wash it, there's a good chance it will become even more thin and flimsy. Plus, a thinner fabric like that does not hold stitches as well. If you are determined to use it, you could try spraying it with Magic Sizing. You can find it in the laundry aisle and will help your fabric have a little more "body" to it.

The Survey Says...

In last weeks letter, we had another one of our famous surveys. This is a great way to get to know our readers and it's wonderful they way so many of you respond. Thanks to all who participated. Here is the question:

How many quilting or sewing newsletters do you subscribe to?

A) one

B) one to three

C) more than three

The results are in and here is what we came up with. You all love your newsletters and love to stay up on the new and exciting ideas and products. Over 75% of you subscribe to more than three. Now maybe we should ask, how many of you read them all? We know Kaye Wood's is at the top of the list right? lol Thanks again for your participation!

Show & Tell

Here is a beautiful quilt made by Elaine W. for her niece Brooke! Elaine certainly shows us, you don't have to spend a lot to get a beautiful result! I'm sure Brooke will cherish this for years to come. Thanks you so much Elaine for sharing your quilt with us!

I made this rag quilt for my niece Brooke in September 2005, for her Christmas present. I purchased 3 brown paper bags of flannel scraps at a garage sale in the summer time. I was able to make this quilt and 2 other quilts out of these bags of scraps and still have some left over pieces! I paid $2.00 per bag so the cost for these quilts was $2.00 plus the warm and natural and thread. A very good deal ! Happy Quilting ! Elaine

I am not Irish, at least not to my knowledge, but I do enjoy the camaraderie and spirituality, not to mention a green refreshment now and again, to help celebrate this day. So in honor of the revered St. Patrick, here is an Irish blessing for you. Have a great week!

Free Technique!

Kaye has a new, free technique on the site called Scalloped Edges, or Half Circle Border. I think you're going to like it! Just click on the link to get there!

http://www.kayewood.com/articles/halfcircleborder.pdf

Just Ask Kaye!

Q: How do you put a hanging sleeve or just simply hang a circle quilt?

K: You would make a half circle sleeve and sew it across the middle. Put a dowel in the sleeve that goes across the middle of the quilt. This will keep it stable and help keep it's form. Then bend a wire coat hanger and put it in the half circle.

Q: Where would I get the Lazy Susan Thread Rack that you use on your show?

K: You should be able to get one at Ray's Sewing Center.

Ray's Sewing Center

1717 Park Ave.

San Jose, CA 95126

408-295-6901

Q: How do I accurately measure the finished top size, when setting up the back? I would like to do some creative applique on the back, but don't know how to position it.

K: Cut the backing 4-6" larger than the top. Fold in the fourths to find the center. That should help you position the applique.

Hello everyone, I hope you're week is going well! Here at KWI we are loving this week! Spring is finally here and nicer weather has to be on the way. You can tell it's getting close, when you see geese actually flying north again. The sun is shining bright and finally has a little warmth to it and my daughter, who was so excited, saw two big robins in the yard this weekend. I woke up Saturday and thought I was hearing things, there were birds singing outside! I never realized how absolutely still and quiet it is in the winter till I hear things like that! They were singing for all they were worth! Personally, I think they might have been trying to warm up, since it was only like 26 degrees that morning, but hey, whatever works! That along with a bright, shining sun, made me bounce right out of that bed! Now I'm not saying we won't get more snow or ice, but I do know it won't be around for long! Let's hear it for spring...yahoo!

Just Ask Kaye!

Q: How do I do reverse bobbin work? Do I need a special bobbin case for it?

K: Reverse bobbin work involves sewing with thread or fiber too large to go through the needles eye. You can do bobbin work with decorative serger thread, narrow silk ribbon, or other fibers. You simply hand-wind your fiber on the bobbin, and lay it in the bobbin case without inserting it into the bobbin tension slot. Bring the fiber up through the needle hole with the needle thread. A decorative stitch will be sewn on the "other" side of the fabric. For best results you'll want to enlarge the stitch to the widest and longest setting available. A zigzag, or even a straight stitch can produce beautiful results. With Janome machines, no special bobbin case is necessary. Simply avoid the tension clip, bring the thread up through the needle hole, and you're ready for this decorative technique.

Q: Will you explain again the difference between an e-book and regular book?

K: Your regular book will of course come to you through the mail. When you order an e-book, we send a link to your e-mail. After you receive it, you click and download the book to your computer. Print it out and you are ready to go! The best thing about this method is you do it at your convenience, it's faster and cheaper because you save on shipping charges. Here is a link that will take you to a listing of all of our "e" products.

Q: If piecing is ok, should the seams be sewn down so the rod doesn't get caught while being inserted? If they should be sewn down, should the seams be pressed open first, or to one side?

K: Press seams to one side. Insert rod from the opposite side or sew down seam allowances.

Q: Is the cutting board and pressing board that you use on the show available in stores?

K: The cutting board is from June Tailor, and the ironing board pressing sheet is available on the tips page:

Show & Tell

Here is a wonderful wallhanging made by Kathy M. for her sister! I love the way she incorporated the local sea creatures! I'm sure your sister will treasure it for a long time to come! Thank you so much for sharing it with us!

Last year my sister was complaining about a narrow wall that she had in her condo in Indialantic Florida. Centered on this wall was the electrical panel door. I asked a few questions about her colors and came up with this wallhanging for her featuring the famed sea turtles and manatees that the area is famous for and, of course, there had to be a flamingo. This guy has sunglasses just to add to the whimsy.

Just Ask Kaye!

Suggestion from a reader regarding the breast cancer pillow project.

Hello, I'm a survivor of breast cancer and appreciate all you are doing. However, if the pillow would be made of a heart shape, it would be great to use during the recovering time. The heart, made of flannel, can be placed under the arm for comfort and believe me it works. I used mine for sleeping and found it was a great comfort.

Thank you so much for your input. I'm sure many readers will find this useful.

Q: Is there a rule of thumb on what color of thread to use for the quilt top? I have never made a quilt and I am not sure what color of thread to use. The quilt top is in various colors of blues, greens and reds, with small amounts of beige.

K: Use gray for dark, beige or off white to piece light colors.

Q: Is there a guideline on how to figure the width of the sashing or binding to go on a quilt? For example, if there are 9 inch squares and 12 squares, what is the size of the binding that would go in between each one to make a wall hanging? Is there a formula for figuring this out?

K: Your sashing should be no wider than the size of the squares, and binding can be any width. It all depends on how you want it to look. If your sashing is wider than your squares, it tends to overcome your design a bit. When it comes to your border, sometimes a wider one pulls your design together more and accentuates your design. Your best bet is to lay it out before sewing them on. Try different widths and see how it looks with your squares. When you find one that work with it and is appealing to you, go with it.

terrye@...?subject=sharewithus

Here are a couple tips our readers sent in. Thanks for taking the time to share them with us, we appreciate it!

1. When you use invisible thread, paint the end so you can see to thread it better. You can use fabric markers. I hope this helps some of you as it did me. Have a wonderful day and happy quilting. Ms. Pris

2. I have a tip, I am not sure if other people know about it, so here goes. When marking your fabric for stitching or cutting lines, use the last little section of soap. When it is wafer thin, let it dry completely. It makes a nice, fine line and will rub and completely wash out, plus it is cost free. Linda

Hey everyone! I hope you all remembered to change your clocks this weekend. Even after I reminded all of you in the newsletter, I still did not remember to change my clock! I woke up, rushed my daughter out of bed and into her church clothes, drove like a maniac arriving bleary eyed, not yet having had coffee, and what do I find? Why everyone was leaving of course! My daughter gave me one of those looks that only a preteen can come up with, went to say something and must've seen the look on my face. To her credit, she used her brain instead of her mouth and didn't say a word. We just turned the car around and went back home. Happy daylight savings time! We at least made it to school and work on time today! Have a great week!

terrye@...?subject=sharewithus

Here are some tips our readers sent in. Thanks for taking the time to share them with us, we appreciate it!

1: I keep my ironing board set at a low level and set it up behind or beside me when I'm working. It's great as an extra work space when I'm not pressing seams. I know some suggest you get up to press to avoid sitting too long. I use TiVo as a timer, when one quilting program is over I take a stretch break. Lynn

2: When using strips for quilts, hang them on a clothes hanger to keep them straight. If there are many of them, you can put them on a rack used for drying clothes. If put in the order that they are to be sewn, then you just need to pick up and sew. Mary

3: When using invisible thread in hand stitching, I thread the needle as usual. Then I place a small piece of invisible type tape, folded over the thread next to the spool, then cut the thread from the spool, on the spool side of the tape. This leaves the tape in approximately the spot where you would usually have a knot. I have never been able to put a knot in the invisible thread any other way. The tape lets you see the end of the thread when taking the first stitch, which I lock into place before proceeding to sew. I have hand quilted 2 baby quilts with invisible thread and found this method to be helpful. Happy quilting!! Al & Marlene

4: As you know during the sewing of a quilt, you would like the iron on. Sometimes I would forget to turn it off when I was done. Now I plug my iron in the same outlet that is used for the light. This way when I leave the room and turn off the light, I am also turning off the iron. This works for me and I have not left the iron on once since. Eileen

5: When getting ready to sew binding on a quilt, I have found that taping a plastic bag under the front of my sewing machine to put the binding in, keeps it neat and easy to use. Also, if I have a drawer in front, I just open the drawer and lay the binding in there, after I have wound it in a neat bundle. Mary Ann

Show & Tell

Here is a beautiful memory quilt made by Arlene. What a great way to share your family history and keep it alive! I'm sure your family will enjoy it for years to come! Thank you so much for sharing it with us Arlene!

I took an early retirement in order to finish this family history quilt for my Mother's 85th birthday. I am so glad, as she died 11 months later. However, she enjoyed it for the time she had it.

Sun and Sunflowers! 2 of my favorite things this time of year. Yeah, I know it's only mid April and I know it will still snow, but this time of year everything is so fresh, so renewed and as usual, I jumped the gun and cleaned out the pool. Of course I enlisted the willing help of my 8 year old twin granddaughters. What fun we had! Water fights, splashing, getting totally wet, then jumping on the trampoline to dry off and warm up, then back inside to a cup of hot cocoa! Shhhhhh! Don't tell their mother!

Happy belated Easter to everyone! Weather wise, this was probably one of the best years we've had in a long time for the Easter holiday! It was still chilly, but the snow is all gone and the sun shone all day long. What more can you ask for? Best of all, that cute little bunny didn't let us down. He managed to find his way and hid over 200 eggs for all the little ones in my family to find, and they had a ball! Every egg they found brought a squeal of delight. Oh to be young, when a simple thing like a candy filled egg, can bring such happiness and excitement to your life! The older kids consider themselves too big for the bunny, but you could see on their faces, that they wished they were little kids again too. But don't feel too bad for them, they more than made up for it with the huge candy centerpiece that was there and lots of leftovers to take back to college. I love that our bunny takes care of all and age is not a factor! Hope you had a grand holiday!

We have so many beautiful quilts on our Show & Tell page, I decided to feature two of them in this newsletter.

Here is a beautiful quilt, perfect for a child's room, sent to us from Allie H. I love her use of primary colors and her sheep, which are sooo cute, just make all the colors pop! Any kid would be lucky to have this quilt hanging on their wall! Thanks for sharing with us Allie!

This is a picture of a quilt I made for an auction at my friend's son's school. It's my own pattern, as I couldn't find any sheep suitable for what I had in mind. I dearly love making children's quilts; they're so much easier to work on! Allie H.

Now we have our second quilt, sent to us from Kathy M. Kathy tells us this is her first quilt, but as beautiful as this quilt is, I'm sure it wasn't her last! Thank you so much for sharing it with us Kathy! You are an inspiration to all first time quilters!

Here's a picture of my first quilt. It gave me such joy. Its machine quilted in the ditch and then hand embellished within each rectangle of fabric. Too bad that doesn't show up well in the picture. Kathy M.

Do you have a special little tip that has worked for you that you'd like to share? We are always open to new things and would like to hear about them. Just e-mail it to Terrye at the address below and it could find a place in our newsletter!

terrye@...?subject=sharewithus

Here are some tips our readers sent in. Thanks for taking the time to share them with us, we appreciate it!

1) I made a quilt with a collection of blocks that weren't necessarily related, but were all 12½" unfinished. There were quite a few colors, all bright. I placed them on different pieces of fabric, until I found a nice mossy green color that complimented them all. I moved them slightly further from each other, until a 2½" sashing looked just right. That meant that the sashing had to be cut as a 3" strip. I used more of the same strips, folded in half, for the binding. I could have figured the sashing mathematically as a fraction of the block size, but I didn't want to cut strips until it looked right with all the different blocks. Daphne N. Richey

2) When paper piecing, use a dab of fabric glue, (glue stick) to hold the fabric down. Your fabric will not shift while you are placing your next fabric piece to be stitched. Elaine from Coral Springs, Florida

3) To make a quick and easy template, trace the design onto the paper side of a piece of freezer paper. Now cut it out with a generous allowance. Measure it and cut five more pieces the same size. Lay one piece shiny side up and the next five, including the one you traced on, shiny side down. You should have a six piece sandwich. With a DRY, hot iron, press all together. Just place your iron on the paper as you would do with a fuseable. Let it cool for an hour or so. Cut on the drawn line and voilà, a cheap and quick template. This is for a temporary template only. Remember, if you trace around it too many times it will change size. Happy Quilting, Mary Lou

4) Here is an idea for your Share With Us piece. I, like others, keep my ironing board to the right of my sewing machine, lowered and at the ready. I also pin on my ironing board and I avoid 'catching' the board cover, by using one of the plastic sheets that are sold as cutting boards. One for veggies, one for meat, one for chicken, etc. It works great - my pins just slide into action right there on my ironing board. I also cut a second one in half, for smaller projects. Sure do enjoy your 'e' newsletter! Thanks, Judy Hansen

Hey everyone! I hope your week is going well. Mine was going very good until I had to fill up my gas tank this week. I'm not sure what's worse, paying for braces for my daughter, or paying for gas! At least with the braces, there is an end in sight, where these gas prices never seem to cease! But you know from a quilters point of view, this could be a very good thing. The next time your hubby complains about the money you spend on fabric, you just tell him fine, you're going to go drive the car. With the gas prices, he'll definitely realize it's cheaper to have you home quilting, than out running the roads! Take my advice, stay home and quilt! It's much more enjoyable and far cheaper in the long run!

Show & Tell

We have so many beautiful quilts on our Show & Tell page, for a while I'm going to feature two in the weekly newsletter.

Check out this beautiful basket quilt sent to us from Mary Jane K. She made this wonderful quilt for her lucky niece! What a treasure for her to have forever! Thank you for sharing it with us Mary Jane!

I made this basket quilt for my niece Tracy, and gave it to her on Christmas Eve 2005. She had mentioned 3 yrs. ago that she wanted a bedroom done in blues and yellows. This quilt has hand quilting as well as machine quilting, and the border has embroidery and is tied. The backing is a blue, swirly fabric and it is perfect for her bedroom.

***********************************************************************************

This wonderful family quilt, was submitted to us by Judy H. Her sister Joyce made it for their father, for his 90th birthday! I can only imagine how it brightens his day to see his loved ones whenever he chooses! Thank you for sharing it with us Judy and please let Joyce know we loved it too!

Joyce made this 'Beautiful' quilted wall hanging for our Dad. Dad used to live in Roscommon, (Kaye knows where that's at) but now he is living in Alma, at the Masonic Pathways Assisted Living. Last November, Dad celebrated his 90th birthday. Joyce e-mailed our brothers, grandkids and great-grandchildren, (along with one great-great) and asked them to e-mail her back a family picture. She printed all of the family pictures on ink-jet fabric sheets and then designed this beautiful wall hanging. She sewed them onto a black background and did a fancy stitch with gold thread around each. Actually, they're little hearts! She found a bright colorful print with "Love" on it and turned it into a heart that she appliquéed on, along with the letters "Family". Needless to say, at my Dad's party, he was thrilled when opening this gift!! It now hangs on the wall near his bed, so he can see all of his family everyday. Thanks for letting me share what a wonderful idea my sister had and how she quilted such a beautiful gift for Dad!

1) Hello, when I find patterns in quilt magazines I'd like to make, I put a large paper clip on it. If I really just have to make a quilt, I also tie on a piece of red ribbon to the paper clip. That way it is easy to find. I have tons of magazines marked in this way (old & new). I don't throw them out. Linda

2) Being more than 40, (ahem!) I find that by the time I put two pieces of fabric together and turn to sew them, I cannot remember which side I am supposed to sew. So now, I tell my students to point their pins, at the seam they need to sew. Then there is no backtracking. Works like a charm! Gayla

3) When trying to restore the color to old quilt blocks or quilts, I found this on a site and tried it. To my surprise it really did work! Mix together 1 gallon of water, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 quart of buttermilk. Soak your quilt or blocks in the mixture and then wash in a mild detergent. You'll be surprised how the colors come back! Lulu

4) When I quilt, I keep a bar of soap on the table next to me. Then I thread five or so and stick them into the soap. That way I have sharp, threaded needles whenever I need them. Plus, they stay sharper for a much longer time. Happy quilting! Martha

Hey everyone! It's the beginning of May and I'm starting my list. You know the one. Take out the summer clothes, pack up the winter clothes, clean out the flower beds, clean out the attic...yada, yada, yada, you get the idea. I found as I made my list, I was becoming overwhelmed with the expectations I set for myself. The more I wrote, the more distraught I got. My daughter happened along right in the middle of my despair, and stopped to see what the problem was. As I explained about my list, she put a hand up to stop me. Confused, I told her I hadn't even hit the half way mark yet. She shook her head and said, "Mom, every year I watch you go through this. You drive yourself crazy thinking you have to get all of this stuff done. Just do what I do". I watched in amazement as she took my precious list, balled it up and threw it away. "See? The world is still turning and your list isn't done. Go take a walk and enjoy the day". The walk was great and not one person mentioned my messy flower beds! You know, for eleven, she's wise beyond her years!

Whether you are a beginning quilter or an expert in appliqué, Joan Shay with her 3-D Appli-bond© technique, will allow you to add realistic, three-dimensional appliqué to your quilts. Here are some tips our readers sent in. Thanks for taking the time to share them with us, we appreciate it!

In my love of quilting, I receive several publications. When I spot a quilt I must make, of course this means when I retire, I simply cut the picture out and glue it onto a page in my 3 ring binder. It is already labeled with "types" of quilts, (patriotic, babies, pastels, etc) and I have much less bulk then keeping all of the publications I receive. Darcy Blankenhorn

I read this somewhere and tried it. To my surprise it really does work! To help releave backstrain, buy a couple of cheap doorstops and elevate the back of your machine. Works like a charm! Julie

My thimble is just a bit too large for my finger. To help it stay on, I lick my finger than put the thimble on. It doesn't fly off unless I want it to! Brenda

Show & Tell

We have so many beautiful quilts on our Show & Tell page, for a while I'm going to feature two in the weekly newsletter.

Our first quilt comes from Joany, who definitely became a favorite of her great nephew when she presented him with this! As big as Harry Potter is, this quilt is sure the envy of all of his friends! You're the kind of great aunt a boy loves to have! Great job Joany and thanks for sharing it with us!

My Great-Nephew Nathan, is Harry Potter and Halloween crazy so I combined the two for him. The front has an owl panel with names of Harry Potter characters and his name along with 8 special "huggles", our name for a cuddle and a hug, hidden in it.

The back is made with Halloween backing. At present, the back is his favorite! Boys!

Our next quilt is from Laurel H. You better be careful Laurel, with this beautiful quilt on display, you might have to start your own decorating business! What a gorgeous eye catcher for your daughter's office! I'm sure she loves it as much as we do. Thanks for sharing it with us!

My daughter has a CPA business and her office has stark white walls, she has no time especially this time of year, to even hang a picture, so I made her a wall hanging for one of the rooms in her office and gave it to her on her 40th birthday. She was thrilled. It is a Kaleidoscope quilt and I have put little crystals in each of the squares, but they are difficult to see in the picture.

Ahhh, spring! The weather has finally taken a turn for the better. I love to drive again just to see the green, rolling hills of fresh, new grass! The sky is so blue and the clouds like big, lazy cotton balls! Flowers are blooming, people are grilling, kids are riding bikes and farmers are planting crops, ahhh spring! The time when everything is reborn. Take a stroll, really look at the beauty around you. Take in a big breath of fresh air, listen to the frogs singing by a pond. It only comes once a year, so enjoy the spring while it's here.

I have a wonderful message for you, sent to me by my friend Eloise. Every now and than she sends me words to live by. Thank you Eloise, I really enjoy them. Check it out!

Buy either Petal Play patterns, the Cardinal or Straw Wreath, and get the accompanying stencil FREE!

Whether you are a beginning quilter or an expert in appliqué, Joan Shay with her 3-D Appli-bond© technique, will allow you to add realistic, three-dimensional appliqué to your quilts. This technique allows you to create dimension, without turning any edges. Comes complete with fabric requirements, paper templates, illustrated stitch sheet, and a list of all the items you need to make your project a success. Plus, when you buy either of these patterns, you will get FREE, the Petal Play Plastic Stencil that goes hand in hand with both patterns! This stencil enables you to cut the varying sizes of feathers and scales, used for both of these patterns. Please understand, one stencil per household. If you decide to order the patterns, I suggest you consider the needles Joan Shay recommends. Each needle has 3 bayonette cutting edges and pierces the bonded fabric with ease. They are also helpful when doing the button-hole stitch on fusible applique. Joan promises, you won't be sorry you ordered them. When bonded the Joan Shay way, these quilts can go into the washer and dryer and will not lose their shape or curl. Makes a great gift! Click the link to check out these items and place orders.

Here are some of the wonderful projects in Stars Made Simple!

Show & Tell

Our first quilt comes from Kathe W. Kathe tells us she loves to make photo quilts and this one is wonderful with pictures of her husband and son! What a great gift they can both treasure for years to come! This is a fantastic quilt Kathe, thank you for sharing it with us!

I finally decided it is time to send in one of my own. I love to make photo quilts and do many gift quilts a year, for the kids in the pediatric cancer units of Duke and UNC hospitals. My son loves to help with these and decided he wanted to make a special quilt for his Dad for Fathers Day. So, we were trying to think of a manly quilt theme and came up with the American Flag. Of course I messed up the stripes on this one, but I have done several more flag quilts and they have turned out perfect. My husband loves his quilt and proudly displays it in his office. My son wanted the EXACT same one, so I did another for his birthday and added John Flynns' braided borders and stripes all the way around, to make it a huge quilt. I've attached an, "in process" photo. It has since been finished and Happy 10th Birthday embroidery added.

Our next photo is from Marge Bowman who shows a wonderful way to remember a child's baptism! Using Kaye's 6 Hour Quilt pattern, her and the girls at her church create wonderful keepsakes for the parents and babies alike! Great idea Marge and the quilt is just marvelous! You and the girls keep up the good work!

Last year, our church celebrated 275 years of existence. We thought about doing something special for babies being baptized and I came up with the idea of making the 6-hour quilts for the babies, using the center panel for a baptismal symbol. I made two and then got a committee together and we met three or four times last year to mass produce these quilts. They have become so popular that we are continuing this new tradition. I am enclosing a couple of pictures for you to enjoy. Sorry I don't have a picture of a completed quilt, they go out quickly.

Here are some tips our readers sent in. Thanks for taking the time to share them with us, we appreciate it!

Whenever I have leftover strip, I roll them onto an empty paper towel roll or toilet paper roll. I can line them up in a drawer or bin and I don't have to iron them again or search all day for the strip I want. Carole

This is a tip I've used for years and it works great for me! Before I wash my fabric, I trim the corners off the selvage at a diagonal. This keeps the cut edge from raveling and I can always tell if I've prewashed that fabric or not. Annabelle

Just Ask Kaye!

Q: I have a twin, quilt top finished and I am going to machine quilt it. I'm planning to stitch a 1/4 inch around the inside of each square. My question is this. When I reach the point where I started, do I back stitch so it doesn't come undone where I cut my thread, or go on to the next square?

K: If I were you, I would lock the stitches rather than doing a back stitch.

Q: I have a Janome Memory Craft 10001 and I use both the sewing and embroidery functions. I'm comfortable with my embroidery thread selection, but I'm not sure what types of threads I should use for piecing and machine-quilting quilts. Does Kaye prefer any special brand?

K: Any long staple cotton thread should work fine, such as Gutermann.

Q: I am making a Grandmother's Flower Basket Medallion style quilt. Is there a different way to quilt the center panel of hexagons, except a 1/4" inside each little hex? I have never seen it any other way.

K: I think that a circular pattern would be nice, as long as it fits within the design.

Share With Us

Do you have a special little tip that has worked for you that you'd like to share? We are always open to new things and would like to hear about them. Just e-mail it to Terrye at the address below and it could find a place in our newsletter!

Here are some tips our readers sent in. Thanks for taking the time to share them with us, we appreciate it!

1) This is in reference to the cutting off of the selvedge in our last e-mail when pre-washing material. Before I pre-wash my material I run a row of serging across the unfinished edges. If it is material I can straighten by pulling the thread I do that first. No more threads to unravel. I know the edges are straight and it is ready for use when I am ready.

2) When I knit or crochet, I keep the yarn in the plastic bag it comes in or a regular quart or gallon storage bag. Then I use the yarn from the center of the skein. This keeps the yarn clean and not tangled. Ruth

3) I use garbage bag twists to keep my bobbin and spool thread together when not using them. They are long enough to string both and can be reused many times. Ethel

Show & Tell

Here is a beautiful quilt that two friends, Betty and Eva, shared in the making of. I guess sometimes, two heads can be better than one, when the end result is this wonderful! Thank you both so much, for sharing this with us! I'm sure it will bring in a lot of bids at your auction!

My friend Eva at age 90, made 32 yellow flower squares. When she was going on 92, she decided she wouldn't use them and gave them to me. I made the little quilt and hand quilted it. Eva was delighted, and the quilt will be raffled at our DKG conference. Betty and Eva

Our next quilter Juju, shows what you can do with determination, skill and love. She's new at quilt restoring, but her results make it seem as if she's done it forever! Great job Juju and thank you for sharing this with us!

As you can see, I have a mess in the photos above and I'm trying to repair the quilt for my husband's niece. I have made 8 quilts and this is my second repair. Juju

Hey everyone! When Kaye is out and about on the road, she hears lots of stories from fellow quilters about their triumphs and disasters when it comes to quilting. This is a part of travel that Kaye really loves. It gives her a good chance to get to know some of you on more of a personal level. Only a fellow quilter can understand the time, love and work, that goes into making these beautiful pieces. Even when you see a quilt that doesn't strike you as very attractive, you respect it. You know how that person probably spent hours working on it. Maybe it brings back a certain event, person or even an era for you. Maybe it's a part of your history or family tree. For whatever reason, a quilt can take you back to that place, comfort you in its folds, and warm your heart in a way few other things can. If you have this gift, take the time to pass it on. It will keep on giving like no other.

Chuckles With Kaye!

These stories are 100 percent true. Only the names have been omitted to protect the innocent!

During a consumer show, the vendor in the next booth was doing a demonstration. A gentleman watched for quite a while, then asked, "Do you really need to know anything to be able to do this?"

Unsure of how to answer, she said, "Not really. It is pretty easy."

"Good. I'll be back in a minute." He hurried down the aisle yelling, "Honey, I found something you can do."

Here are some of the wonderful projects in Stars Made Simple!

Share With Us

1) My quilting friend, Carol, and I had lots of fun making the Star Potholder project from the Fons and Porter magazine. We decided to flip the star points over so that the folds were on the back. We also tacked down the points with matching thread. These two little changes really make the star appear to be pieced. I have already started a second project in our school colors for a fund raiser. Thanks for creating yet another excuse for me to quilt with my friends!!! Love, Sherri G

2) When sewing items that require circles or curves, it helps if you use a stretch stitch when sewing. By doing this when you turn the piece or iron it, it seems to be a lot smoother, thereby not creating any pleats. Suzy R.

3) Before I invest time and money in a costly new tool, I check with my friends first to see if they already have it. That way I can give it a try before I make that big purchase. Shirley

4) Question

I noticed you said something about not back stitching but to use a lock stitch at the end of a row. Could you explain what that is? Thank you

Put the presser foot down and the needle down into fabric. Then lift presser foot just off the fabric and take 3 or 4 stitches. Not very far off, or you get a real mess.

Show & Tell

Check out this fabulous quilt sent to us by Susan B. Susan says she had a tough time picking colors and patterns, but I think the result is just wonderful! Thanks for sharing it with us Susan!

A real tough time choosing colors/patterns for a new baby (born Sunday 4/8/06) whose room colors are chocolate brown and blue. His mom likes contemporary design. Quilting for about 5 years and these days make quilts, to help parents afford the expenses, for specialty schools for teens-at-risk. Susan B.

These next beautiful quilts come to us from Bonnie A. I love how the raggy look adds so much dimension to her heart quilt! It looks to me as if Ashley and grandma make a great quilting pair! Thanks very much for sharing with us Bonnie and Ashley!

Ashley's painted quilt I made with my 5 year old granddaughter. She painted the squares and I put the quilt together for her. She picked out the material for the background herself. The heart raggy strip quilt was made for a friend. Bonnie A.

Show & Tell

Check out the wonderful quilt Helen and her granddaughters, Emma and Danna, made for their new baby sister Drew! Not only is Helen spending loads of quality time with her grandkids, but she's planting the seed that inspires them to get into quilting! It's a beautiful baby quilt Helen and I love the personal touches your granddaughters added! Thanks for sharing with us!

My granddaughters are just learning to sew. So what could be easier than a rail fence quilt for their new baby sister, born March 19th. They decorated the back with fabric markers. This is sure to be a treasure for baby Drew Amelia as well as for her older sisters Emma and Danna. Helen

Our next quilt is a beautiful Court House Steps quilt from Mildred M. Just look how her wonderful choice of colors make the design stand out! Beautiful job Mildred, thanks for sharing it with us!

This Court House Steps quilt was created on an 18" square of backing and batting. I started in the center with the 5" block. Mildred M.

In case you've forgotten, this Sunday is Father's Day! Did you know the first Father's Day was observed on June 19th, 1910? Then in 1924, President Coolidge gave his support of a national day. It wasn't until 1966 though, that President Johnson signed a presidential decree, declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. What constitutes as a father has changed over the years, but I think any man who makes a difference for the better, in your families life, should be honored. Stepfathers, uncles, brothers or a special friend, are all people to be considered. So take a minute, to honor all of the special men in your life, who have taken the time for you!

We have been getting a number of e-mails from subscribers, saying they are receiving the newsletter 8 times or more when we send it out. Terrye has tried to contact the SBC Global people a number of times, and still hasn't received a response. Terrye requests that you also contact SBC Global with the hopes that one of us gets through. We apologize for the inconvenience and although the fault does not lie with us, we are trying to help with the problem. Thank you for your patience!

The Survey Says...

In last weeks letter, we had another one of our famous surveys. This is a great way to get to know our readers and it's wonderful, the way so many of you respond. Thanks to all who participated.

Q: Would you rather create your own pattern and color combinations, or have a pattern to go by?

The results are in and here is what we came up with. 1 in about 10 of you, make up your own pattern. Out of the 9 that use a pattern, half use their own colors rather than the suggested colors. Thanks again for your participation!

Show & Tell

Our first quilt, is a wonderful photo quilt, made by Cheryl H. for her in-laws 50th anniversary! What better way to capture all the years they've been together! I'm sure this beautiful quilt, will be a treasured gift forever and I certainly hope, it's not the last one you make! Thanks for sharing it with us Cheryl!

This quilt is a special 50th anniversary quilt, that was made for my in-laws at the end of March. First I placed photos of family and friends in the middle of all the star blocks. Then I machine quilted in the ditch and stippled all the white diamonds, where the blocks came together. This is the first quilt of this size that I have finished and I was so happy that they loved it! Cheryl H.

Our next quilt, is a fabulous keepsake quilt, that Ramona M. made for her husband, for Father's Day! I love the way she highlighted the details of her family into it! This will be a great quilt to start a, "passing on" tradition and I'm sure your husband absolutely loved it! Thanks for sharing it with us Ramona!

I would like to share with you, a quilt that I made for my husband, for Father's Day last year. I call it "Angels Among Us". The center block was hand drawn, using two different pictures. One is a picture of my husband and me, the other was my son's school picture, from the year I started this quilt. (2003) Three corner squares have our first name on them and the year we were born. The last corner block, has our last name on it. The angels all have different colored hair and are appliquéed onto red and green, quarter square triangles. It was stitched in the ditch and free motion quilted, in the center square. The feathered hearts were quilted and then painted, to bring out the stitches. Thanks for letting me share a quilt I'm proud to have done, for that special man in my life. Enjoy!!! Ramona M.

Alaskan Quilting Cruise Update

I'd like to thank Round Bobbin for inviting me to teach on their 4th annual cruise, this latest one to Alaska.

A special thanks to Judy and Cindy at Round Bobbin for asking me to be part of this beautiful, wonderful time.

Our first stop was Hubbard Glacier. We came within 300 yds of the glacier. Absolutely Fantastic! The calving was spectacular. Our group picture was taken in front of this magnificent glacier.

The next stop was Juneau where we visited the local quilt shop, Changing Tides. What a fantastic shop, Jan Mardone, the owner, has done a wonderful job. Lots of great Alaskan themed prints had to be aquired, and all of our quilters were generously rewarded with a goodie bag from her shop.

Then on to Sitka, another day of unseasonably warm sunny weather. There we visited Quilt Works, the local quilt shop where we found specially designed Sitka fabric. I met a local designer, Lisa Moore, a very talented lady who has a beautiful pattern line. Jill Scheidt, the owner of this shop, along with Lisa designed the Sitka fabric.

Ketchikan was our last Alaskan stop, where we found a jewel of a quilt shop, The Silver Thimble. Chock full of Alaskan themed fabrics, this was the final stop that made the seams burst in my suitcase! The owner, Betty Gale, was gracious and friendly.

Our last stop was in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, where we spent the evening blessed with more sunny weather.

Our quilt classes onboard were held during our at sea days, quilters came from all over, a most interesting group. They were kept them busy with a variety of classes as well as hands on projects.

The ship was beautiful, entertainment was fantastic, and of course the food was great, but that goes without saying. A lot of new friendships were created.

A special thanks to our dinner companions, the ladies at table 135 for making our trip more fun; Trish, Pat, Charlie, and Judy.

Hey everyone! I hope you had a great weekend and Father's Day! Wednesday is the first, "official" day of summer. In honor of it, I came across a poem having to do with, believe it or not, produce. It's kind of cute, check it out!

Cabbage always has a heart, green beans string along. You are such a tomato, will you peas to me belong? You've been the apple of my eye, you know how much I care. So lettuce get together, we'd make a perfect pear. Now, something's sure to turnip, to prove you can't be beet. So, if you carrot all for me, let our tulips meet. Don't squash my hopes and dreams now, bee my honey dear. Or tears will fill potatoe's eyes, while sweet corn lends an ear. I'll cauliflower shop and say, your dreams are parsley mine. I'll work and share my celery, because you are divine! Author unknown

Our first quilt is a beautiful wedding gift Laurie made for her daughter and son-in-law to be! I love the different textures and color schemes she used to make this quilt stand out! This quilt would definitely dress up any wall! Thank you for sharing it with us Laurie!

I made this quilt as a wedding gift for my daughter and son-in-law. I started collecting blue jeans many years ago! My intent was to make this a full size quilt, but when I realized how heavy the individual blocks were going to be, I decided to downsize it to a wall hanging. I made all of the foundation blocks and "farmed out a few blocks to family members" for help with embroidery. This also made it a family heirloom of sorts! Once all of the blocks were embroidered with crazy quilt type stitching, I began beading. This was about a 6 month process in itself. My sister, who is quite the seamstress, helped me assemble the blocks using black velvet, which really offset the blocks nicely. There is one special block on the back of the quilt, done as a label with their names and the date of their wedding. I presented the quilt to my daughter and now son-in-law, the evening before her bridal shower. They were quite surprised and have given the quilt a place of honor, hanging in their new home. Laurie

Check out this next wonderful quilt submitted to us by Anne. You can tell it was close to her heart as she made it for her first grandson! The colors are so eye catching! Thanks for sharing it with us Anne!

I've only been quilting for a couple of years, and I just love it! Here's an easy quilt I made for my first grandson, to match his room decorated in primary colors. I appliquéed the letters which were made by tracing the letters, printed in gigantic font. It was truly a labor of love! Anne.

Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing fine. As you can see, I'm gearing up for the big 4th of July celebration coming our way. Amidst the barbecues, fireworks and celebrations, I hope you find the time to say a prayer for the men and women, who help protect our rights and freedom. Without these people who have and do sacrifice themselves, who knows where our country would be? Reflect on how hard our forefathers worked to secure the basic freedoms we take for granted everyday. Have a happy and safe 4th of July!

I officially declare this, the best summer weather of all time! It has been a beautiful summer thus far in Northern Michigan! The temperatures have been a steady 80-85 degrees, with just a little in the way of humidity and rain. My flowers are thriving, my grass is still green, my air conditioner is still off, I am one happy camper! I love that you can still be outside and do stuff, but not have the sun beat you down to a crisp! Yep, the dog days of summer haven't gotten here yet and as far as I'm concerned, they can keep barking at the door! Have a great week!

Share With Us!

Do you have a special little tip that has worked for you that you'd like to share? We are always open to new things and would like to hear about them. Just e-mail it to me at the address below and it could find a place in our newsletter!

joyce@...?subject=sharewithus

1) I always try to wash, iron and fold my fabrics as I get them. The problem is, I sometimes buy too many to keep track of. Now, after I buy and wash them, I pin a safety pin on the corner of the fabric. This takes away any guess work involved and I have no problem seeing which has been washed and which is still waiting on me to get to it. Joanne

2) I usually use chalk when having to mark a fabric. When it comes time for the chalk to be removed, I just use an old toothbrush. The chalk brushes right off and does not harm the fabric. Oh and a soft toothbrush seems to work best for me. Margaret

3) I heard and I can't remember where, to take your needle and run it through your hair. The oil from your hair will help keep it sharp and go through the material easier. Well, I tried it and definitely noticed a difference! Louise

The Survey Says...

In our last letter, we had another one of our famous surveys. We like to do these from time to time so we can get to know all of you better. This one really seemed to interest tons of our subscribers who were kind enough to respond. A big thanks to all of you who took the time to participate! Here is the question:

1) At what age did you learn to quilt?

2) Have you passed your love of quilting on to anyone else?

This is how it broke down. The majority of the people who responded, learned how to quilt between the ages of 51- 60. Following a close second, is the ages of 41-50. Our third runner up surprisingly, is the age of 10 years old or younger! This was amazing to me. I tried to remember what I did at the age of 10 and I know it was nothing as hard as trying to quilt! My hat goes off to you ladies! We also had some who bravely undertook the art of quilting, between the ages of 71-80 and just love it! You go girls! A lot of you started sewing at a very young age and then quilted later in life.

Our second question also had a number of various responses. But the one to lead the pack was passing it onto a daughter, followed close by a grandchild. Friends, sons and grandsons followed next. A great number of you take the time to pass it onto people though various charities and organizations. Some include, Adult Ed, 4-H students, senior centers, Vacation Bible School and a prison for women. All in all, the comments are the same. You love your quilting and everything about it! Thanks to all of you who have and will pass it on. You are creating the quilters of the future, keeping a proud and time honored tradition going strong! Keep up the great work all of you and thanks again for participating.

Show & Tell

This fabulous quilt is sent to us from Armatha G. She came up with this great idea to help celebrate her churches 100th anniversary! I think this is a great idea for a church, school or family tree! I think you've started a new trend Armatha! Thanks for sharing this beautiful quilt with us.

Three years ago, my church celebrated it's 100th anniversary. I asked each member to bring me a piece of green material 7 x 7 for each member of their family. I machine embroidered each name to the material, washed the material, then cut it out in a leaf shape. I machine appliquéed the leaves to an off white background material. I used "bark" material for the tree, the grass area has the name of my church and the date and the root system has the names of the 37 men and women who started the church in 1903. It has been been enjoyed by family members and guests of the church. Hanging beside the quilt is a booklet with each persons name in it and the location of their leaf on the tree.

Share With Us!

Do you have a special little tip that has worked for you that you'd like to share? We are always open to new things and would like to hear about them. Just e-mail it to me at the address below and it could find a place in our newsletter!

1) Instead of pins that I always stick myself with, I now use a glue stick, one for fabric that will wash out, instead. It is perfect for seams that you want to match. Just a smidge on one side and then match them together. No pins to take out, just sew. JoAn E. Wenatchee, WA

2) I, like Joanne, wash, dry, iron and fold my fabric after I purchase it. I also snip off a corner of each fabric, so that I know that one was done. Then, I put the corner into a small photo album. I can group the samples by color, designer or project, and take it with me when shopping or shop hopping! It works very well for me. That way I also don't duplicate fabrics I already have. Libby

3) Hello! While shopping at a local G.I. Joe store for auto things, I came across a fantastic little tool. It is a detail brush for car dashes. However, it makes a wonderful lint and thread brush for the sewing machine! One end is a small brush and the opposite end is the small, red, dust mop. Works wonders and is very inexpensive at just $2.99. Sharon B. Lakewood, WA

4) I was just at the hardware store and found a pack of 12, small artist brushes for $1.79. I use these handy little brushes to clean lint and etc. from my bobbin area. I was told never to blow into that area, as there is moisture in your breath. We all know, what moisture does to the fine parts of our machines. I found the brushes at the hardware, much cheaper than other places. Happy Quilting, Mary Lou

Show & Tell

Our first wonderful quilt, actually comes from a mistake! If only my mistakes looked this good! As you can see from the beautiful jacket, it didn't take Patricia long to get back on track. Thank you Patricia, for sharing your beautiful wall hanging and jacket with us!

As my first strip-quilting project, I decided to make a Thai silk jacket. Twenty-four strip-quilted diamonds later, I realized I didn't have uniform shapes. My misshaped diamonds became a wall decoration, and I decided to try again. This time, I used cotton fabric, measured, stitched, and cut carefully. Success, a jacket! Patricia Mitchell

Our next awesome quilt, is a wonderful tribute to an obviously well loved teacher in Mary's hometown! At a time when teachers are somewhat underrated, she had to be just ecstatic to receive this! Way to make at least one teacher feel very special and loved Mary! Thanks for sharing this with us!

I used one of Kaye's patterns to make an appreciation gift for my children's band and orchestra teacher. The close-up photo shows where I've used embroidery to represent the four areas she teaches: Concert and symphonic band, orchestra, jazz band and music theory.

My son plays tuba, and tuba was his teacher's own specialty, so that is why I featured the sousaphone (that's a marching tuba) in the center. I can't wait to see her reaction tonight at the band banquet. Thank you, Kaye, for the project idea! Mary D.
