Yesterday was the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. That means that it's the shortest day of the year. It also gives us reason to celebrate during our long, cold winters. The shortest day of the year means that the following days will be longer, and we celebrate the return of the sun's heat and light.
Through the years, the Solstice has lost some of it's meaning with Christmas being celebrated around the globe. Many people, of many beliefs are looking to regain that connection.
Take some time this year to find out what your ancestral traditions are. And when you are so inspired you decide to make a quilt to celebrate these, be sure to send us pictures!
Have a wonderful holiday season....Kaye

I made this quilt for my 3 year old grandson for his big bed. When his Daddy came home from work, he made Daddy close his eyes before seeing it. He then yelled surprise and told Daddy all about the items on the shelves....Jane

When sewing a "medallion" quilt, or even a large quilt that has a great deal of piecing or applique in the middle of it, I go ahead and quilt it with a light weight batting before putting on borders, or filling it and sewing on the backing. It is much easier to maneuver under the needle, and you don't end up with puckers, or as many "quilting mistakes"....Jolene
Often I find my fingers too dry to align seams and keep the fabric tidy so I have discovered that keeping a container of sortquick (that jellystuff used to moisten ones fingers to separate paper) near my machine and viola' I can accurately align all edges!...Darcy

This week....Seam Allowances for Hand & Machine Piecing:
It doesn't matter if you hand or machine piece. The question is whether you use templates or strip piecing. If you use templates, the template is usually the finished size and you need to add seam allowances. Hand piecers usually mark the finished size, which is the seamline. They then eyeball the 1/4" since the finished size is already marked. If you strip piece, don't worry about the seam allowance. It will eventually come off all sides of the piece.
Christmas Traditions Around The World In many cultures, customs practiced at Christmas go back to pre-Christian times. Many involve divination--foretelling the future at a magic time: the season turning of solstice.
In Russia, there's a Christmas divination that involves candles. A girl would sit in a darkened room, with two lighted candles and two mirrors, pointed so that one reflects the candlelight into the other. The viewer would seek the seventh reflection, then look until her future would be seen.
The early Germans built a stone altar to Hertha, or Bertha, goddess of domesticity and the home, during winter solstice. With a fire of fir boughs stoked on the altar, Hertha was able to descend through the smoke and guide those who were wise in Saga lore to foretell the fortunes of those at the feast.
In Spain, there's an old custom that is a holdover from Roman days. The urn of fate is a large bowl containing slips of paper on which are written all the names of those at a family get-togehter. The slips of paper are drawn out two at a time. Those whose names are so joined are to be devoted friends for the year. Apparently, there's often a little finagling to help matchmaking along, as well.
In Scandinavia, some families place all their shoes together, as this will cause them to live in harmony throughout the year.
And in many, many cultures, it's considered bad luck for a fire or a candle to go out on Christmas Day. So keep those candles burning!
A little FYI...We will not be here on Christmas Day and New Years Day, so if you have any questions or concerns, please call and leave a message on our machine. From all of us here at Kaye Wood Inc., we wish everyone a very happy, safe and blessed Christmas, take care!
Our Holiday Sales continue with Clearance prices on some of Kaye's older books - Complete your collections for a fraction of the price - some as low as $4.00.
As I sit in my sewing studio, I can look out my wall of windows and see the fresh snow on the trees. The snow will probably still be there in the spring-just more of it. The best part is that it doesn't get dirty, so it is always nice to look at. We have several evergreen trees and they are the prettiest of all at this season. The snow will stay in the trees until we get a blizzardy wind.
Occasionally some deer and wild turkey cross the yard on their way to our trout stream. It looks like a Christmas wonderland.
Why doesn't the snow disappear from the spots where it isn't wanted, like the driveway and the sidewalk, and stay fresh and nice out my sewing room window? Oh well, I can dream.
This time of year, I love to look at all the Christmas fabric. It just shouts, "sew with me". But I am a procrastinator and it is time to put that aside and do some decorating for Christmas.
Have a great Christmas and holiday season
Kaye

I started a quilting group 3 years ago as there was not one that met all day anywhere near where I now live. I ended up being the ‘teacher’ as most ladies who joined were complete beginners. Here is a small quilt (21 x 18) that I made to demonstrate one method of quilting landscape wallhangings. My son and his girlfriend wanted it so I had to get it finished. I am rather pleased with how it turned out....Shirley

We were among the first in the quilting industry to present some of our books and patterns in electronic format and we continue to do so. These ebooks are immediately available to you as a download and there's no shipping. Then you can print them to store with your other patterns and books, or choose to keep them on your computer. Cool!
I have more than one sewing machine and each one takes a different style bobbin. To eliminate confusion, especially on the clear colored plastic ones, I assign a color to each machine and permanent marker the side of the bobbin with that color. I also keep the separate bobbins in a well marked bobbin holder so that I know which one is which....Joanne
I often go to sewing classes that require you to bring your own machine. There are times when the same model of machine is in the classroom. I put an address sticker on both the machine and the carrying case for identity purposes. I also label patterns, rulers and other equipment. This eliminates the "Who's is this?" questions at clean up time and helps getting borrowed items returned....Joanne

This week....Envelope Finish: An envelope, or pillow finish requires a backing fabric cut the same size as the quilt top. The two pieces are then sewn, right sides together, with or without batting. Sew around 3-1/2 sides of the quilt, if batting is sewn into the seam line, the batting should be next to the quilt top – this will eliminate the seam allowance showing through from the top of the quilt.
Christmas Traditions Around The World In Scandinavia a little gnome called Julenisse puts the presents under the Christmas tree in the night. The children leave a bowl of porridge out for him. It is from Scandinavia that most of our Yule log traditions derive. The dark cold winters inspired the development of traditions concerned with warmth and light. Yuletide, meaning "the turning of the sun" or the winter solstice, has traditionally been a time of extreme importance in Scandinavia. For a long time, it was considered dangerous to sleep alone on Christmas Eve. The extended family, master and servant, alike would sleep together on a freshly spread bed of straw.
The Yule log was originally an entire tree, carefully chosen, and brought into the house with great ceremony. The butt end would be placed into the hearth while the rest of the tree stuck out into the room. The tree would be slowly fed into the fire and the entire process was carefully timed to last the entire Yule season.
In Scandinavia an important part of Christmas is the candles. It is said that the presents are brought by gnomes who live in the attics of houses all the year round.

I want to thank all of the quilt guilds for the good work you do. I recently had the pleasure of visiting with the Gold Coast Quilters Guild in Boca Raton, Florida, where the program was a report on the charity quilts and projects done during the year. Because of my work with the LoveQuilt Connection, I was asked to tell them some of the things that have been done nationwide using the 6 Hour Quilt pattern.
We now have a National Coordinator, Mary Kaeser. She is in the process of setting up LoveQuilt chapters in different states and starting LoveQuilt programs in middle and high schools. The purpose of the LoveQuilt is to teach the 6 Hour Quilt so that many, many quilts can be made to be donated to charities. This quilt is easy enough for even non-sewers to do.
You Gold Coast Quilters really impressed me. Their meeting was well conducted and everybody took part in either committees, reports or show-and-tell. As a guest, it was great to see everyone work together to make the guild a fun place to be.
In January, we will start a new schedule of Quilting the Kaye Wood Way Teacher Certification classes. The first one will be in Oklahoma City at the Oklahoma City Winter Quilt Show, followed by Denver and Puyallup, Washington. Quilt shops and guilds are always on the lookout for quilt teachers who are certified in a particular method. It's a great way to supplement your income.
Have a great winter season.

I made this quilt for my husband, who is battling cancer. I wanted it a bit different than the greens that Kaye used. My husband loves trees, so I attempted to get it done before his birthday. I came up with the idea of taping a flannel-backed tablecloth, upside down on my large folding table. By leaving one end open (only taping the corners on one short end of the table) I can slide my cutting board under the tablecloth and it is right there handy when I am ready for it. The fabric clings to the tablecloth and I am still able to walk or roll all around the table. I can also push the table out of the way when I need a break. When I need the table for entertaining, which is not that often, I simply remove the tablecloth, and put it away till needed again. Works for me and hope it will be a useful idea for someone else....Brenda

Christmas Traditions Around The World In Germany, Christmas preparations often begin on the eve of December 6th. People often set aside special evenings for baking spiced cakes and cookies, and making gifts and decorations. Little dolls of fruit are traditional Christmas toys. Children leave letters on their windowsills for Christkind, a winged figure dressed in white robes and a golden crown who distributes gifts. Sometimes the letters are decorated with glue and sprinkled with sugar to make them sparkle. Germans make beautiful gingerbread houses and cookies. The German Christmas tree pastry, Christbaumgeback, is a white dough that can be molded into shapes and baked for tree decorations. In parts of Germany, people believe that the Christ Child sends a messenger in Christmas Eve. He appears as an angel in a white robe and crown, bearing gifts. The angel is called Christkind. There is also a Christmas Eve figure called Weihnachtsmann or Christmas Man, he looks like Santa Claus and also brings gifts.... From Santas.net
I can't believe it is December and Christmas is right around the corner. I'll bet most of you have your Holiday projects finished. Am I right?

Now I have to admit that my teaching and cruising schedule left me no time to make gifts this year. Cruising was pure vacation with our kids and grandkids. I just love the Caribbean beaches and the color of the water is fantastic. It is one of those things that pictures do not do it justice. You just have to be there and have it in your memory.
I have a break now from teaching until I go to Oklahoma in mid January. Oklahoma was the first state to pick up my PBS-TV series back in 1989. Were any of you watching back then? That was before we all used the internet for our quilting classes.
Now we are keeping up with technology. We get to share with you through our weekly newsletter and our complete catalog of fun quilting things is online. Lots of my friends are on my Facebook page. And best of all you are no longer at the mercy of your TV station's schedule, but can watch our quilting videos 24/7 on www.kayewoodTV.com.
Keep quilting and happy holidays.

I know it's not even Thanksgiving yet, but Christmas and the Winter Holidays are right around the corner. Learn how to stitch your own greeting cards with this tutorial from the folks at Hints and Things....
Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer , Cleveland , Ohio
"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written. My odometer rolled over to 90 on 2 August, so here is the column once more:"
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good. 2. When in doubt, just take the next small step. 3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch. 5. Pay off your credit cards every month. 6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree . 7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone. 8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it. 9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck. 10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile. 11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present. 12. It's OK to let your children see you cry. 13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about. 14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it. 15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks. 16. Take a deep breath . It calms the mind. 17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful. 18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger. 19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else. 20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer. 21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special. 22. Over prepare, then go with the flow. 23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple. 24. No one is in charge of your happiness but you. 25. Frame every so-called disaster with these words '' In five years, will this matter? ". 26. Always choose life. 27. Forgive everyone everything. 28. What other people think of you is none of your business. 29. Time heals almost everything. Give time, time. 30. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. 31. Don't take yourself so seriously.. No one else does. 32. Believe in miracles. 33. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do. 34. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now. 35. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young. 36. Your children get only one childhood. 37. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved. 38. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere. 39. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back. 40. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. 41. The best is yet to come. 42. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up. 43. Yield. 44. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

(Right) This is my second one-seam Flying Geese quilt. Love the pattern, it is very easy....Betty
(Left) My sister Peggy ordered this pattern for me, Rings That Bind from Kaye Wood about a year ago because I thought it looked so simple, but turned out to be a challenge. I've been quilting about 2 years and I love all of Kaye’s books and patterns. My family calls me, Jackie Kaye.. lol.. cause I like to tell them I like quilting the Kaye Wood way, or that isn't the way Kaye says to do it....Jackie

To thread a sewing machine needle: Place a piece of white cardboard,(business card will do) in back of needle to find the eye, then moisten BOTH the thread and the needle eye. The thread will just glide through...Maryann
Power strips can be machine savers on a daily business, but it is most important to totally disconnect your machines when you will be absent from home/studio for more than a couple of days. One severe jolt to your household system can easily result in severe damage and possibly fire, especially during a heightened storm season. This also applies to computers. I find it easiest to simply unplug the power strip leaving all machine cords intact. Even if reaching the wall plug is somewhat of a chore, it is much simpler than detaching all those individual power cords....Deinya

A group of friends went deer hunting and paired off in twos for the day. That night, Will returned alone, staggering under the weight of an eight-point buck.
"Where's Joe?" the others asked.
"Joe had a stroke of some kind. He's a couple of miles back up the trail," Will replied.
"You left Joe laying out there and carried the deer back?" they inquired.
"A tough call," he nodded. "But I figured no one is going to steal Joe!"
I hope you are enjoying the fall weather complete with pumpkins, apple cider, hayrides, etc. And best of all, let's celebrate chocolate by covering apples, doughnuts and all sorts of stuff with it.
Have you ever used some of the luscious chocolate colored fabrics in your quilts? I used it in my Kokopelli quilt from my book, Strip Cut Quilts. It was fun to work with fabric the color of chocolate, but I'd rather be eating it.
Soon we will be switching to the colors of winter and Christmas. When you visit your quilt shop, take a look at all they have to offer for the holidays. We've inlcuded a Christmas tablerunner in the pattern, Braided Tablerunners. But, of course, almost any pattern can be made for the holidays by selecting holiday fabric.
Be sure to email us pictures of your Christmas projects. Do you make small gifts, like potholders and tablerunners, or do you give full size quilts? Read on further below for a quick and easy to make cell phone purse, perfect for gift giving, and new in our shop this season!
Have a great Thanksgiving. I will be celebrating Turkey Day on board a cruise to the western Caribbean with our whole family.
Keep on quilting.

I loved this quilt (Love Letters Quilt Pattern) from the first time I saw it on Kaye’s site. Couldn’t wait until I got it I had so many ideas. First I made the one that is similar color of the pattern. Sent it to school with my daughter who showed it to the other teachers and staff at school. I got a call and they wanted 5 more right away and 3 more by July. I love making this quilt because of the step-by-step instructions. I have enclosed a photo of the first one I made. Since then I have done some in burgundy and hunter green and purple and yellow. Thank you Kaye for a neat pattern....Sharon

Just wanted to let all of you know that the students put in over 500 hours on our Quilts of Valor Make a Difference Day. They completed 30 quilt tops, some backings and many even learned to make the pillowcases we need for presentation. Now they are off to the long-arm quilting volunteers. We will have a booth at the Veterans Day event in Los Alamitos, CA and present a few quilts, then take more to West LA for presentation to our war wounded. We will have another high school sewing event on Jan 23 and Feb 20, so still need donations of blocks for them to assemble into quilt tops. Thanks for your support.
What charity events are your guilds doing? Tell us about it here!
Have you discovered Wii? For my birthday, I treated myself to a Wii and the Wii Fit. It is great fun and great exercize.

Hurt Books
We still have a few "Hurt Books" in our inventory. These are scratched and torn copies of our popular books. Although they are scratched or torn, they are intact - there is no information or pages missing. Deeply discounted, but quantities are limited.
We have a Plexiglas company here where we live, and when I need a template I go and ask them to cut out, on scrap Plexiglas, the size template I need including the seam allowance, it doesn't matter to me what color, plus you can see through it, and you can choose 1/8", 1/4" thickness whatever you would like....Karlen
Wood is not the best thing to use for templates but if it is all you have, you can put a coat of poly. on it and it will last forever. You can also recycle all kinds of things as Kaye said. I save every piece of cardboard I get, if it has a ruff edge I use tape on the edges. Thanks. Just thought I would put my two cents in... Sharon
I don't know if this tip has been suggested, but I use left over batting depending on the size of the left overs to make baby burp cloths or changing pads, and the small pieces I put in the dogs bedding for a softer feel....Sue

This is a quilt pattern I found online. It did not include the lion and tiger. I made the tent an 18″ block so I could fussy cut the interior action and the flags on top have the baby’s name embroidered on them. All the tails and ears are 3-D so he can play with them during tummy time....CyberBrat
At a rummage sale, in a paper sack marked “fabric scraps-25¢,†there were many small fabric pieces with these squares of vintage ladies quilting at the bottom. A few months later I had this black and white quilt done. It hangs in the place of honor in my sewing room....Arlayne

We're starting to get information back on our Hexagon Challenge. Have you tried it yet? (pssst.... there's a special deal on a free pattern with the View & Do Hexagon... see below...)
It is always fun to learn a new technique and by takingThe Challenge, you can experience several different ways to cut hexagons. Then let us know your opinion. So... what are you waiting for?? Let us know if you like the technique challenges. We plan to do more.
Another note..let us know about your charity quilting. We've heard from lots of you and we are so proud of the quilting community. Did you know that local police and fire departments like to have quilts in their rescue vehicles. It really helps in domestic abuse and fire situations. Think about this if you haven't begun to make charity quilts. Here's our charity page to get you started! http://www.kayewood.com/blog/community/charities/

I could not find a template the size that I needed to make a quilt. So I cut the shape out of paper and transferred it to basal wood. I included the seam allowance, too. The wood is 1/8" thick. I cut 2 pieces of the template out of the wood the same size, glued them together. The sides were a little ruff, so I sanded them just a little so the wood would not catch on the fabric. Now I have a template to use for all quilts. The wood works just like the plastic templates do.....Norma
My tip is saving the plastic insert in the bacon and turkey bacon packages. I run them through the dishwasher and then cut out the desired shapes for templates. Recycling the plastic which is usually around forever....Karen
Our readers show off their quilts....
I thought that you might like to see one of the bed quilts that I have made plus my latest wallhanging. This was an applique piece overlaid with 2 layers of chiffon so that the fish are truly under the water...Shirley
Here is a photo of my version of “Angel Song”. I have a good friend who collects angels of all sorts. So, each Christmas I try to find an angel for her. I have made a machine embroidered organza ornament, a paper pieced pillow, and a stained glass quilted wall hanging. This year when I found Angel Song on your website, I knew it was the right for her gift. My Angel Song was stitched in the border ditches, echo quilted around the angels and has Sulky Sliver details on the gowns and wings. Hope you like it....Jackie

I had a great time in Grand Rapids last week. We now have 9 more "Quilting the Kaye Wood Way" Certified Teachers who are ready to set up classes. Most of these teachers are from the Southwest corner of Michigan, but we had two from the Chicago area and one from Gaylord, Michigan.
We will soon list their names and classes they offer.
I am really excited to see our list of Certified Teachers grow; most of them will offer classes starting this summer or fall. I would like all of you to be able to take classes on my original techniques so we can make quiltmaking easier and more accurate.
Keep on quilting.

I recently ran out of 40wt thread with only a very little bit left to quilt. My local shops did not have any more matching colors in that weight, but a store clerk gave me an idea of what she did when she was in a pinch one day. She used regular polyester thread, but had 2 spools threaded as one all along the top and then inserted both threads through the same eye of the needle. This worked like a charm for me! You could not tell which stitching was made with a single strand of 40 wt thread and which was made with the 2 strands of polyester!
My other tip is that I have been needing some templates recently and so I saved my cardboard cereal boxes and cut those out. They are perfect and I feel good because I am recycling - and saving money – all at the same time! Rita....
I finally finished the wheel chair robe lap quilts. I did about 50 of them. We took them to the nursing home here in town. A lot of them are the quilts from your pattern books..... Betty

Blocks For The Brave Update
Blocks for the Brave has received a call from the VA hospital asking for more quilts. They have already given out all of the quilts that were delivered last month (40 of them). They had a large number of troops return from war and expect to have a lot more coming home soon.
They only have about 15 quilts ready to go. Currently there are about 30 out being quilted and have about 45 more that are ready to be quilted. They do have backs for most of them and have batting for some of them. If you know any one that can quilt them for them please let them know and they will get them out ASAP.
Blocks For The Brave would like to thank all of you that have made it possible to present 179 quilts to our hero's to date. It could not have been possible with out all of you!
'Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past.. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.'
The dog said: 'That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?' So God agreed.
On the second day, God created the monkey and said:
'Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span.'
The monkey said: 'Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?' And God agreed..
On the third day, G od created the cow and said:
'You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.'
The cow said: 'That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?' And God agreed again.
On the fourth day, God created man and said:
'Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjo y your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years.'
But man said: 'Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?' 'Okay,' said God, 'You asked for it.'
So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.
Life has now been explained to you.
There is no need to thank me for this valuable information. I'm doing it as a public service
I hope you had a terrific Memorial Day. Even though it's over, we are dedicating this newsletter to this very special day.
I have an extra special reason to celebrate. My grandson has left Iraq and he will be home for a few weeks this summer. If you pass by a military person somewhere, tell him or her thanks. Consider thanking them by making a quilt for the Quilts of Valor or Wounded Warriors.
How many of you ever get the chance to play with quilting techniques? This week we are extending a challenge to you to try different techniques and let us know what you think. It would be fun to do this as a group, but try it even if your group is just you. Once your quilt is finished, no one will know what technique you used to make that quilt; but I would rather make it using the fastest and most accurate way. What do you think? Take The Challenge!
We will be extending other technique challenges in the future. Have a great day.

Go to your favorite store and go to the toothbrush department and buy a pkg. of DenTek floss Threaders. Boy do they work good at threading the needles. I keep them at my sewing machine all of the time. They really work great on your sergers. Mary
Here is a quilt I made for 2008 MOMS4MARINES annual picnic. We sold a lot of tickets and were able to raise money to send Christmas packages to our troops in Iraq. It’s a very good cause and the families that come are growing every year. It is an open picnic for any family that has a family member in the Marines, already in boot camp or going to boot camp, or deployed. It’s a fun day for them all. We always have a great time. Donna

Quilts of Valor - student and parent sew-in, Sat May 30 10am-4pm at Lakewood High School, Lakewood, CA, Sat Oct 24 9am-5pm at Wilson High School, Long Beach, CA
Quilts of Valor needs to have 12.5″ blocks ready for them to sew together, so if you have anything to donate, send them to this worthy cause. They will also take strips, squares, fabric, UFO’s, etc to help us in this huge endeavor. The quilts only need to be at least 50″x60″, so basically 20 blocks plus a border! They can provide a block pattern if you want, or you can use one you are comfortable with. Patriotic colorings are nice, but not required, anything can be used. Remember 10% of our wounded are females, so pastels, florals, etc are all usable P.S. To those of you who contributed to our event last year, THANKS. The kids assembled 50 quilt tops in 12 hours!! Great Job. any questions, email socalQoV@...

It is a glorious day today. Be sure to get out and enjoy the sunshine especially if you live in the North. Kaye's Quilting Friends Discussion List....
This list, sponsored through YahooGroups is a lively, high volume list. Join the fun!
Since her specialty is developing techniques that simplify the cutting and sewing process, she's had to break some rules to make it easier.
Here are a few:
1. The Starmaker Master Template (there are only 3) are used for the designs in most of her books. Since she introduced these templates in 1981, she's never used a regular template.
Add these Starmakers to your collection for accurate angles.
Quilts of Valor - student and parent sew-in, Sat May 39 10am-4pm at Lakewood High School, Lakewood, CA, Sat Oct 24 9am-5pm at Wilson High School, Long Beach, CA
This list has been falsely credited to Andy Rooney. He is not the author, rather it is a compilation of many from age 5 to 95. (Snopes) I've learned that~ ~the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person. ~when you're in love, it shows. ~just one person saying to me, "You've made my day!" makes my day. ~having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world. ~being kind is more important than being right. ~you should never say no to a gift from a child. ~I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way. ~no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with. ~sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand. ~simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult. ~life is like a roll of toilet paper. It is another beautiful spring day here in Michigan. The daffodils are in full bloom and they make me want to make a yellow quilt. I don't usually use many yellow fabrics, but maybe I will start. And I always seem to want to make floral quilts this time of year. Maybe it is time to go fabric shopping.
In two weeks I will be teaching in Grand Rapids-close to the Tulips in Holland (Michigan, not the Netherlands). If you have ever gone to the Tulip Festival, you'll want to go back again and again. So we are hoping the tulips will still be in bloom when we get there. Have a great time quilting.

This tip will work for quilters as well as sewers. If you purchase batting in large quantities and would like to keep it handy, roll the batting onto a round cardboard cylinder, then slip a spring tension rod through it and put the tension rod in a convenient space. I have one wall in my sewing room lined with bookcases and the tension rods fit inside the walls of the bookcase, always visible and handy. I also keep rolls of stabilizer, interfacing, and during the holidays, I even keep rolls wrapping paper on the rods. Donna
I pre-wash my fabric and then use spray starch to give it body. When I spray a section, I use my palms to spread the starch evenly over the area before ironing. This gives more complete and even coverage. Mary
I live in Florida, and regular betting gets to be too warm for most kids. So, instead, use heavy white felt. It's stable, and light enough for even the warmer days here. Mary

On April 29th another 42 quilts were presented to the VA hospital. Everyone there just loved all of the quilts! To date we have presented a total of 179 quilts since August. So far we have made 274 quilt tops. There are 31 of them at longarmers right now. We have 50 that are waiting for longarming. The rest of them are in various stages of competion (binding, washing, labels....). We would like to thank all of you for all of your hard work and generous donations of time, longarming, fabric, batting and money. With out you none of this would be possible. We just uploaded new photos from April.

Stanley, Wisconsin, was the place to be this past weekend, and I was there. Donna Haas, quilter, designer and owner of Sew & Sew Quilts & Fabrics, invited me to present my "Quilting the Kaye Wood Way" lecture/seminar/trunk show. It was a great day and I now have 120 new quilting friends. It was fun sharing my original cutting and piecing techniques with them. In the morning, the quilts all featured the View & Do TM Shapeswith lots of ideas for all levels of quilting projects. Then in the afternoon, I shared many of the varied quilts that could easily and accurately made with the Starmaker® Master Templates. All through the day, projects for the Pointless People were included; these quilts are a great place for beginning quilters to start. These quilts always look much more difficult than they are to make and the "Ah" factor for these quilts is always great for a new quilter to hear.
Thank you Donna and all her quilting friends who made this day a great success.

Use clean empty pizza boxes to store quilt blocks until you are ready to assemble your quilt. Your local pizza parlors will generally give you one or two, or they may charge you a small amount for them. You can construct the boxes inside out. If you place a plastic sleeve on the outside end of the box, you can place a removable label in the sleeve with your project name for easy viewing. These boxes stack neatly and can be reused by just changing the removable labels. Be sure to place a piece of cloth on the bottom of the box to prevent the pizza parlor advertising from transferring to your project.....Donna
A quick substitute for a sandpaper disc on a quilting ruler is a piece of clear plastic wrap applied to back of ruler. Sometimes I use a single layer, other times a double later. You can still read the markings. The ruler will be nonslip.....Rose
I wash my new fabric and leave the washer lid open. It washes but doesn't spin. Then I take it outdoors (in a bucket or tub) and hang it on the clothesline in the back yard. A stiff stream of water from the hose rinses and "irons" it. I can fold the wrinkle free fabric and not really iron it until I use it. And it smells so fresh. Try a clothesline and use your solar dryer. Saves money, too.....Sarah
Using spray starch after washing out the natural sizing...... I have been told by more than one national teacher that starch can draw bugs. I wouldn't want to take a chance on it.....Sandy

Last week I was talking about the drudgery of spring cleaning and all that it entails, hoping for some good suggestions. As usual, you didn't disappoint me! Here are just some of the tips that I received, that I hope you will find useful. Thanks to everyone who participated and have a great week!
1) Nothing works better for me than making a list and crossing off each job as I finish it. Do one thing at a time and quit for the day before you get too tired. The oldie but good tip of adding white vinegar, (must be white) and a couple of squirts of detergent to your pail of water when cleaning windows is still the best. No streaking, which cuts out half the cleaning time. The most important tip of all, don't strive for perfection! You're going to live in this place, not perform surgery in it! Ocalady
2) My spring cleaning tip; Clean your sewing room first, then call Merry Maids. While they are cleaning the rest of the house, you hide out in your sewing room with the door shut! Carol, New London, MN
3) Call Judy the maid. She charges $12.00 an hour and is FAST! She can clean everything but the sewing room, while you are in there "playing" and "patting" your fabric, organizing your next two quilt projects! Jennie
4) I've never done it this way, but I think I'll give it a try this year, utilizing the alphabet. You make a list of everything in your house by the letter it starts with and clean it that way. Set aside boxes or containers in the garage that you want to give away or use for a yard sale. Once you move it out, you don't want to move it back in by mistake!
An "a" could be the attic. For those of us who have them but don't use them, that check mark comes real fast! B's could be all the beds, bookshelves and the basement, although I'd save the basement for last! C's could be carpets, curtains, china and closets. You get the idea. I think making up the list is part of the fun adventure. It's also a great way to have the children help as well. Happy springtime...good-by dust bunnies! Marvel in Minnesota
5) My spring cleaning tip is call the housecleaning lady!!! Kathy T.
6) Have you ever checked out Flylady.com? She has housecleaning down to a series of routines, so there is never spring cleaning to do. I haven't attained my goals there, but it is surely an interesting concept and one that takes away a lot of that overwhelming feeling. I do find many of her ideas quite helpful. She is quoted this month is the little Missouri newsletter devoted to crafting, which somehow seems to be about 95% quilt related. If you haven't seen it, I will send you a copy. Your personal notes, tips and quilting in general, are also a great help to me. Yours is the only thing of that type, except Flylady, that I open all the time. Thanks for all of your helpful words, quotations and pictures. Bright spots in my day! Sarah W., St. Louis, MO

Do you have a special little tip that has worked for you that you'd like to share? We are always open to new things and would love to hear about them. Just e-mail your tip to me at the address below and it will find a place in our newsletter!
1)I have a tip. We all spend a lot of time at the sewing machine and you know that the doctor says we must keep moving to stay in shape. So I put my cutting mat and small ironing mat on the kitchen table, not in my sewing room. I cut in the kitchen and walk to the sewing room and after sewing, go back to the kitchen to iron and cut more fabric. I might make 20 or more trips to the kitchen and back each day that I sew. I am 66 years old and this keeps my knees from locking up after hours of sewing. The dog likes it too because he thinks each time I go to the kitchen I am going to get something to eat and will give him a treat. He gets in some exercise too.Liz B., Silver Spring, MD
2)If you need paper for patterns, go to a big box store such as Lowes or Home Depot, etc., and buy a roll of contractor paper. It's good for sketching and designing too. A good size roll can be had for about $10.
A friend recycles the plastic runner from weddings to use for patterns. She says they are very durable and just collects them after the ceremony. Joanne K.
3)I read this on another site and it really comes in handy. When I start a new project, I always buy two spools of thread that I need. One to use with my sewing machine and the other to fill 3 bobbins in advance. That way, when my bobbin runs out of thread, I don't have to stop everything and refill it. I just pop in another bobbin already filled and keep sewing! Chandra, Sarasota, FL

Here is a beautiful quilt from one of our readers. Thanks to all of you that submit and share your quilts and stories.
This is a quilt that I made for my sons' mother in-law for Christmas last year. Our son is in the Navy and came home from Japan to get married on 12/22/07. He's been in the Navy for 6 1/2 yrs. and has been in 7 different countries, including the first 8 months in Iraq. He also earned a medal for staying on the streets for two days after Hurricane Katrina, bulldozing a pathway for emergency vehicles to be able to get through. He was so shocked when his commander presented him with this honor in front of all 500 of his unit members. He is a fine example of God's great love and protection to his kids! Latricia

SPRING is finally here! Gone at last is the snow and the bitter cold temps that chilled me to the bone. YIPEE!!! You know what that means don't you? Spring cleaning time is here again also! I love spring, but I'm really not much of a fan when it comes to spring cleaning. Don't get me wrong, when it's done I'm sooo happy. To look around and see everything so shiny and bright, especially after a long winter is awesome, but getting myself motivated for this task is another thing entirely! My problem is I think of everything in the house that I need to get done and always end up feeling overwhelmed. This year I'm going for a different approach, I'm taking it one room at a time, starting at the top of the house. I'll list all the things I need to do in that room, work on it for that day, until it is done. At least I get it completely finished even if it is one room at a time. I figure it will take me a little longer doing it this way, but I think my results will be much more attainable. Do you have any spring cleaning tips? Let us know and we'll share them with the rest of our readers.

1)I have a tip I learned from a friend. She taught me that if you put your hand down on a blanket and cannot touch quilting stitches all around, then you need to add more stitches. The same goes for when you're basting a quilt. This will allow less munching of the fabric for machine quilting as well as quilting by hand.Kenna, American Fork, UT
2)I sew and also embroider a lot on my Bernina. I found a metal wine rack at a local thrift store for $2 and I am now using it for my rolls of stabilizer. I have mine standing on the floor but it could also be mounted on the wall. Sharon B., Lakewood, WA
3)I use a toothbrush holder to hold my seam rippers, fabric markers and marking pencils. Very convenient and right there when I need them. Gloria W.

Before and After....Children
Before children I was thankful to have been born in the USA, the most powerful free democracy in the world.
After children I am thankful for Velcro tennis shoes. As well as being a time saver, I can hear the sound of my son taking them off, which gives me three extra seconds to activate the safety locks on the back seat windows, right before he hurls them out of the car and onto the freeway.
Before children I was thankful for the opportunity to obtain a college education and have a higher quality of life than my ancestors.
After children I am thankful to finish a complete thought without being interrupted.
Before children I was thankful for holistic medicine and natural herbs.
After children I am thankful for pediatric cough syrup guaranteed to "cause drowsiness" in young children.
Before children I was thankful for a warm, cozy home to share with my loved ones.
After children I am thankful for the lock on the bathroom door.
Before children I was thankful for my wonderful family.
After children I am thankful for my wonderful family.

1)I use the 7 day pill case for storing extra bobbins for my sewing machine. When I have to change colors, they are close at hand. Helen, Ellsworth, KS
2)As we get older we seem to be getting more prescriptions from the drug store. The plastic containers are great for putting sharp items in the garbage. The larger ones are a perfect size to dispose of used rotary blades and the smaller ones are good for used needles. This way I don't have to worry about anyone getting cut or stuck.Linda S.
3) I use the tall clear pill bottles to store my bobbins. You can see what colors you have and how much is on the bobbin. Audrey N., Ridgeway, ON, Canada

Hey everyone! Well, it's here again, the day we have all come to know as April Fool's Day. I'm not really a big fan of this one, even though I do consider myself to have a sense of humor. It has been my experience that most of the pranks performed on April Fool's Day tend to be at the expense of someone else and really not all that funny...especially to the receiver. No one even knows for sure how this day originated, but it has managed to still flourish for a great number of years. Throughout this newsletter I will sprinkle tidbits about pranks I have read about that are amusing. See what you think. Meanwhile, here are some other dates in April you might find useful or amusing, or both.
April 1-International Tatting Day
April 2-National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day
April 3-Don't Go To Work Unless It's Fun Day (Why haven't I heard of this one before?)
April 4-Tell A Lie Day
April 7-No Housework Day (yippee!) and Caramel Popcorn Day
April 13-Blame Someone Else Day
April 17-Blah, Blah, Blah Day and National Cheeseball Day
Perfect and Painless Half-Square Triangle Units by Debbie's Creative Moments!
Imagine making dozens of half-square triangle units that are strip-pieced with no lines to draw, no paper to tear, no pressing of individual units, no dog ears to trim, and they are perfect and painless! Besides making the quilts contained in this book, you will learn how to convert your tedious patterns that require many, even hundreds of small half-square triangle units to this speedy and accurate technique. With Debbie's books, you will not only make the projects, but she has designed them in a way for you to have complete understanding of the way to do it. While there are patterns for several projects in every book, the intent of these patterns is to show you how to apply what you have learned. By the time you finish, Debbie will have given you the tools and confidence to make the quilts you want to make, not just how to read a pattern and duplicate a quilt that someone else has designed.
Buy 1 or both patterns and get 99 cent s/h for orders shipped within the US.

1)Jim sent in his tip about using a pencil box to store things. I keep a medium sized one outfitted with all the things I need for classes, tucked in my sewing roll-about. It sure has come in handy. Polly
2)I use a child's pencil box to hold my hand stitching. It's a great size for everything I need from needles and thread, to scissors and pieces needing to be pieced. It always has hand piecing work in it and I keep it available in the car.Chris
3)I've read that when you're not sewing you should keep your presser foot down. By doing this you take the pressure off the spring that helps to raise and lower it and it will last longer. Sheila K.
April Fool's Prank-The Eifel Tower Moves
The Parisian stunned French citizens in 1986 when it reported that an agreement had been signed to dismantle the Eifel Tower. They stated that the international symbol would be reconstructed in the new Euro Disney theme park going up east of Paris. The space where the Eifel Tower used to stand, would be used to build a 35,000 seat stadium to host the 1992 Olympic Games.

In 1987 an LA disc jockey announced that on April 8, the LA highway system would be shut down for a month to get repairs. The station received hundreds of frantic calls in response along with the California Highway Patrol! The station later admitted it was a prank and that it was stunned by the publics reaction to the hoax. The CA Dept. of Transportation reportedly didn't find it amusing either and called to express their opinion to the station.

In 1996 Virgin Cola announced that in the interest of consumer safety, it had integrated a new technology into their cans. When the cola passed the sell-by date, the liquid would react with the metal in the can, turning the can itself bright blue. Virgin warned that consumers should avoid purchasing all blue cans. The joke was that Pepsi had recently unveiled their newly designed cans that were...bright blue!

The robins are back, the robins are back! This is always the deciding factor to me that spring is definitely on the way, when I see a robins hopping around in the front yard. I can't wait for things to start turning green again, for the flowers to start blooming and for the weather to be warm enough to get out the patio furniture! It won't be this week, but hopefully soon. I can hang in there a little bit longer I guess...like I have a choice! Hope things are starting to bloom in your neck of the woods! 1) Okay, here is a tip courtesy of Gail R., (I have to give her credit or she might do me harm LOL) I don't want to steal her thunder. I think it's pretty good and if you're into recycling, even better. Use the container that your 100 CD's came in for a variety of things.
Lid-Good for storing your scissors, rotary cutters or short rulers.
Round Disc-Good for a perfect, round template.
Spindle-Good for holding a cone of thread.
Hope that you will use MY tip! Helen S., Waterford, ON, Canada
2) In regards to using the Pringle canister for crochet hooks. I used them until I noticed that the metal rim nicked my long crochet hooks. If you use them, cover the rim. I have also found that a long prescription bottle works well for this too. Thanks for listening. Janice F.
3) I use a child's pencil box to hold my sewing necessities. It's always right beside my machine and has everything I need neatly stored away. My plastic pencil box holds my pins, scissors, pencil, fabric marker, seam ripper, assorted small buttons and a vinyl pencil case where I keep two rotary cutters. There's always a small amount of free storage space for anything I might need to store, until I can get it to the correct place in the fabric closet. Jim (Yes, there are many male quilter's in the world...it's something my wife and I enjoy doing together.)

Things that make you go hmmm?
Why do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage?
How can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance?
Why do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting, so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place?
No one ever says, "It's only a game," when their team is winning.

Hey everyone! Spring is almost here and I can't tell you how happy I am about that! Especially since the weather has been really very nice here for this time of the year. The sun has been shining and gentle breezes have even had a hint of warmth to them this week. Plus, low and behold the ducks and geese are actually heading north again! A sure sign that spring is on the way! Here is a little poem I thought you'd enjoy. Have a great week everyone!
March bustles in on windy feet and sweeps my doorstep and my street.
She washes and cleans with pounding rains, scrubbing the earth of winter stains.
She shakes the grime from carpet green, till naught but fresh new blades are seen.
Then house in order, all neat as a pin, she ushers gentle springtime in.

Did you know that March 21st is National Quilting Day? This even was started in 1991 by the National Quilting Association. This year they are devoting the celebration to "the home" and suggest that quilters use their efforts to support those who are "struggling for warmth and comfort". To that end they have created a pattern called "Welcome Home" that you can download from their website.
Do you have a special little tip that has worked for you that you'd like to share? We are always open to new things and would love to hear about them. Just e-mail your tip to me at the address below and it will find a place in our newsletter!
1) When I need to make straight lines for quilting, I just use blue painters tape. It works better for me than a pencil and it doesn't leave the fabric sticky. Francine P.
2) When your sewing machine is not being used, keep your presser foot in the down position. This will keep the pressure off the spring that helps put it up and down and it will last longer. Gracie H.
3) When I have to baste my quilt top, batting and back together, I use a circular upholstery needle. It's great at catching all of the layers and makes basting so much easier! Janice F.

Did You Know?
I had someone write to me recently asking about something I ran long ago called, Color Psychology. I couldn't find the original article I had, but I did find facts relating to this subject, that I hope are pretty close to what I had in the past. Basically it's how people react to different colors that they view. As relating to quilting, you can appreciate how different colors automatically catch your eye, but do you think about how they can make you feel? Here's probably more than you ever wanted to know about the subject!
Color Psychology
White-Stands for innocence, chastity and purity, which is why in most western societies, brides wear white down the aisle. It also represents cleanliness. Doctors, nurses and lab techs wear white to imply sterility. White reflects light and helps keep things cool. Great for summer clothing, it creates a cool and refreshing feeling.
Purple-Is the color for royalties. Represents luxury, wealth and sophistication. Also the color of passion, romance and sensitivity. Some people use purple decor for a posh and artistic look.
Brown-Is the color of wood and the earth. Is solid and reliable and helps to create a comfy, neutral, open atmosphere. Represents strength, maturity, credibility and solidity. Most likely to be on a man's favorite color list.
We're expecting!
Expecting what? Well, that's for us to know and you to find out! Each week we'll be giving hints in our letter to help you figure out what is going on, so keep checking.

Hey everyone! A Happy St. Patrick's Day, (early) to all! Don't forget to be wearing your green on Tuesday or you're apt to get a little pinch from someone! I am not Irish, at least not to my knowledge, but I do enjoy the camaraderie and spirituality, not to mention a wee bit of green refreshment in the past, to help celebrate this day. So in honor of the revered St. Patrick, here is an Irish blessing for you. Have a great week!
Lucky stars above you, sunshine on your way.
Many friends to love you, joy in work and play.
Laughter to outweigh each care, in your heart a song.
And gladness waiting everywhere, all your whole life long.

It's Hip To Be Square
A fantastic book from the series Becoming A Confident Quilter" from Debbie's Creative Moments.
The technique that is the basis for this book begins with the premise that you have a stack of squares that are all the same size. When making scrappy quilts or any multiple fabric quilts, an efficient use of your time is to begin with pieces that are uniform in size and shape so you can stack them neatly and cut through layers, cutting many pieces at one time. Whether they are squares, strips (worms), fat quarters, fat eighths or any other size and shape, you will find that working with a group of fabrics that are uniform in size, will get you well on your way to creating your next scrappy quilt. So let's get started with squares. With Debbie's books, you will not only make the projects, but she has designed them in a way for you to have complete understanding of the way you do it. While there are patterns for several projects in every book, the intent of these patterns is to show you how to apply what you have learned. By the time you finish, Debbie will have given you the tools and confidence to make the quilts you want to make, not just how to read a pattern and duplicate a quilt that someone else has designed. Click the link for more info about this book.
Here are a few of the quilts included in this book.

We want your tips!
Do you have a special little tip that has worked for you that you'd like to share? We are always open to new things and would love to hear about them. Just e-mail your tip to me at the address below and it will find a place in our newsletter!
1) Empty Pringles cans are very useful for storing long objects such as knitting needles, afghan crochet hooks, small width art brushes, long narrow shears, etc. Smaller Pringles cans are great to keep things like point turners, 6 inch rulers and other things that we use in our sewing. Decorate with your own fabric and you will have a one of a kind container that will keep such objects orderly so that you know where they are when you need them. Also great for travel when you want to work on a project away from home.Joanne K.
2) My tip is for anyone who has trouble when threading invisible thread through the eye of a sewing machine needle. Even using the needle threader and getting the invisible thread in the loop. I use Handicap sewing machine needles. These are brilliant! Just add on the needle and then thread your machine until you come to the eye of the needle and you only have to slide the thread down one side of the needle until it clicks into the eye! What bliss, no more growling or hair pulling! Hope this will help a lot of us with sight problems. Moray P.
3) When I have to clean the inside of my sewing machine, I use my bicycle tire pump to blow out the dust and grime. I have been doing this for a while now and it seems to work very well. Melinda S.

Color Psychology
Green-Is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision. Has many symbolic meanings, but the strongest and most universal is nature. It also signifies life, youth, hope, renewal and vigor. Is a calming color and has a neutral effect on the human nervous system. They have green rooms for people to wait in who are going to appear on TV, so they stay relaxed. This is also why is is used a lot in hospitals. In American culture, green represents money. Various shades of green have different symbolic meanings. Dark green implies wealth, is cool, conservative and masculine. Emerald green symbolizes immortality. Olive green is the color of peace.Yellow-green is the least preferred color of consumers.
Orange-Is the color most associated with appetite. Also relates to warmth, contentment, fruitfulness and wholesomeness. It looks strong and generous and has a broad appeal. It can be used to indicate that a product is suitable for everyone and can make an expensive product seem more affordable.
Black-Is a controversial color. Some relate to it as sturdiness and reliability. Others relate to it in a darker way such as witches and the occult. It speaks with authority and power but also represents despair and mourning. People choose to wear black clothing for many reasons. Some feel it is more formal and powerful, but also can be depicted as being stylish and sophisticated. Others choose black because it gives a slimmer appearance

Basically it's how people react to different colors that they view. As relating to quilting, you can appreciate how different colors automatically catch your eye, but do you think about how they can make you feel? Here's probably more than you ever wanted to know about the subject!
Color Psychology
Red-Symbolizes love, power, fire, passion, aggression, blood, excitement and heat. This color can elevate your blood pressure and respiratory rate. It can stimulate you into making quick decisions and have high expectations. Words and objects that are in red are an immediate attention grabber, which is why red is a popular color of car that is stolen frequently. A very extreme color, red clothing can be uplifting and convey energy and power, but also may invite confrontation. Red should be used as an accent color, not as a background as it is so dominating. Red accents are favored by many bars and casinos as it causes people to lose track of time. Restaurants also favor this color in their decor because it will stimulate the appetite.
Yellow-Represents playfulness, light, cheerfulness, warmth, creativity and an easygoing attitude toward life in general. Bright lemon yellow is the most eye-fatiguing color. Light is reflected by this color, resulting in excess stimulation on the eyes, which also causes eye irritation. Yellow speeds up metabolism, enhances concentration and kick starts the brain, but is hurtful to our eyes. Paint a room yellow and you will make babies cry and grown-ups lose their tempers in it. When used in small doses, yellow will bring on sensations of warmth and brightness, as inviting as a warm sunny day. But like sunlight, you want it there to feel good, not right in your eyes. A softer tint will be much more pleasant to behold. When it comes to yellow, shade choice is important. Sunny yellow is the most visible colors of all and the number one attention getter but a dingy yellow represents decay, sickness, jealousy, duplicity and caution.
Blue-Represents sadness, depression, wisdom, loyalty, solitude and trust. Blue is the most popular color, favored by both men and women. Wear blue to a job interview to show your dedication and loyalty. The color blue is a natural appetite suppressant and can be repulsive in some instances. Lighter blue relaxes our nervous system and has a sobering effect on the mind. A great bedroom color as it causes the body to produce calming chemicals, making you feel peaceful and tranquil. Darker blues can have a different effect however, making you feel cold and depressed. When reading info written in blue text, people seem to retain more of it.

Hey everyone! Can you believe February is just about out of here? Time has such a way of slipping by so quickly these days, even during the long winter season. Before you know it, spring will have arrived, the birds will be back chirping their songs, the grass will be green, the flowers will bloom, and the trees will have leaves again! Ahh...I can't wait! Until then, let me share a photo/joke I received from a reader the other day. I got such a kick out of it, not only because it was funny, but because it so depicted how it's been around here this winter. I hope you enjoy it and have a great week!
PS-Thanks to all who wrote to tell me who the author of "Attitude" was from last week. His name was Charles Swindoll.
Summer's almost here in Michigan...we can now see the deer moving around. Yep, won't be long.
Check This Out!
Delectably Simple Mountains
A fantastic book from the series "Becoming A Confident Quilter" from Debbie's Creative Moments.
Hills or mountains? Cliffs? This book includes six quilt designs. The technique used for making Delectable Mountain blocks in this book is simply this: Make large half-square triangle blocks, cut them vertically into sections, rearrange the sections in the reverse order and sew them back together. Voila`! You have mountains....or hills.
Available for a short time, order yours today!
Here are a few of the quilts included in this book.

Do you have a special little tip that has worked for you that you'd like to share? We are always open to new things and would love to hear about them. Just e-mail your tip to me at the address below and it will find a place in our newsletter!
1)I receive many bags of small pieces of material and do charity quilting with them. In a recent cutting session of strips, blocks and triangles, I found that if I put my cutting mat on the corner of the cutting table and leave room on the two sides of the table to walk around, I can cut the blocks without turning the mat or the material. Sure made the cutting go faster. Edith G.
PS. I had sent in a tip about tying a quilt from the plain block side rather than the top, when a panel is used to eliminate the ties showing. I use this on charity quilts as it is faster than hand quilting.
2) I got this tip from an online site and it really helped my frustration. If you make a scrap quilt and start having trouble on when to put fabrics, put all your pieces in a brown bag. Pull them out one at a time without looking first and use whatever one you grab. It might not please you at that moment, but should make your scrappy quilt look great when it is finished. Debby G.
3)If you have have two quilt pieces that don't quite match up, try this. As long as the difference between the two is not more than 1/8", place a pin at each end of the seam and stitch with the larger piece facing the feed dogs of your sewing machine. That should work in the extra bit of fabric. MaryLou M.

Show & Tell
Here is a beautiful quilt from one of our readers. Thanks to all of you that submit and share your quilts and stories.
This is a quilt I made for my 3 year old grandson. He helped me pick out the fabrics. Bright colors really made him happy, so he was excited when he got the quilt and realized the results of our shopping trip. He is already asking to go on another adventure to the fabric store. I use the quilt as you go method, usually in block sections. A friend showed me how to put rows of blocks together, then quilt the row, attach another row, quilt it, etc., until finished. This method worked well for me and reduced the time to make the quilt by quite a bit. Lorraine

Do you have a special little tip that has worked for you that you'd like to share? We are always open to new things and would love to hear about them. Just e-mail your tip to me at the address below and it will find a place in our newsletter!
1) I had an Olfa cutting mat that was about 20 years old and warped, that had to be replaced. I found one of the old "twister" boards, cut a usable piece from the old mat, and glued it to the twister board. It works great for cutting small and odd shapes. It also works for weaving baskets. Nancy M.
2) When I have clothes that are my favorites but are getting too worn to wear, I like to make another one just like it. To do this, I rip the seams of the old garment apart and make a pattern with them. Tissue paper is often too fragile, so once when I went to my gynecologist, I folded the paper sheet they gave me to cover up with, and took it home to use. The paper is much stronger than tissue paper and I don't have to be quite so careful with it. Pat A.
3) Drawing seam allowances on some templates can be a real pain. I read on a tip site to rubber band two pencils together and then trace the line of the template. One pencil will make your template line but the other pencil will draw a 1/4" seam allowance. Works every time I've tried it. Carolyn M.

Attitudes
"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you...we are in charge of our Attitudes." Unknown

1) I just replaced sheets and shower curtains. They were packaged in heavy plastic bags, that I am now using to keep various applique projects and quilt blocks. They are easily transported to class, stay clean and organized. Several of the bags had a pocket where the label had been. I place my notes on what is contained in the bag in the label pocket. Everything is neat and in its place! Margaret B.
2) When I can get old blue jeans or anything with a pocket, (usually from garage sales or just worn out pants) I sew the pockets on a piece of coordinating material and hang them in my sewing room. With the different size pockets, I have a place to store each item I sew with. Of course waste not, want not, I use the remainder of the jeans to make a patchwork doggie blanket for the little puppies. It's sturdy and easy to keep clean. Brenda F., Oklahoma
3) When cutting out a pattern that has lots of different sizes, I use a clothespin to hold them together. Then when I am ready for each size, I can just pull from each group. I don't see that the clothespins make any marks on the fabric, if so, you'll be pressing the blocks. Margaret M., La Pine, OR

This is a special quilt I made for a wonderful girl. I have known this young lady since age 13 and she's been through a lot. She's now 39 and having her third baby and loves this quilt. I thank Stitchesgalore for helping me find animals to put this wonderful quilt together. One of the children is 18 months and she still hangs onto it.
