QUOTES

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today
and make a new ending. -Maria Robinson

Say what you mean, mean what you say, but don't say it mean.

COMMUNICATION

Communicating a sense of personal power comes from a belief that you can reach
your goals in your own way. Powerful people empower others and encourage others
to express themselves openly. You can communicate a sense of personal power by
developing these traits:

AUTHORITY: Authority is inner confidence - a trust in your skills and
abilities. It comes from the inside from an attitude of "I can do that. I
deserve success." This attitude radiates outward as you assert your rights,
honestly ask for what you want and need, and develop a willingness to give to
others and yourself.

ASSERTIVENESS: Assertive behavior is active, direct, and honest. It
communicates an impression of self-respect and respect for others. By
being assertive we view our wants, needs, and rights as equal with those of
others.

ACCESSIBILITY: The powerful person is a master networker. Good
networking increases your visibility and gives you a valuable circle of people
from whom you can give and receive support and information.

IMAGE: You communicate power through your image. Do you project an image
consistent with strong leadership? Stand tall and walk proudly,
remembering that you have value as a person. When you meet others make
direct eye contact and keep your handshake firm and friendly. Clearly
state who you are and what you do.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN'S BARGAINING TIPS

1.Be clear, in your own mind, about exactly what you're after.

2.Do your homework, so that you are fully prepared to discuss every
aspect and respond to every question and comment.

3.Be persistent. Don't expect to "win" the first time. Your job is just to start
the other person thinking.

4.Make friends with the person with whom you are bargaining. Put your
bargain in terms of his or her needs, advantages, and benefits.

5.Keep your sense of humor.

Subject: MS or Multiple Sclerosis - a brief note by Dr. Leo Rebello
leorebello@...

Anjum Modi, 37, in message no.10 wants help for MS (Multiple Sclerosis).
She has described briefly her illness well. The following information should help her and
other MS patients.  For further guidance, treatment, counseling Anjum may get in touch
on 28872741.

Multiple Sclerosis a brief note by Dr. Leo Rebello
Early symptoms of MS, a disturbance of the Central Nervous System in league with weakened muscle reactions, include weakness, heaviness in the legs, brain dysfunction, numbness and tingling of the fingers and toes, visual disturbances (seeing double), bladder malfunction, giddiness, and a loss of balance. After years of speculation, it's finally been confirmed that the hepatitis B vaccine causes multiple sclerosis (MS). Researchers from Harvard estimate that it increases the risk by over three times. This link may also mean that the vaccine could cause other serious autoimmune diseases. Suspicions were first raised around 10 years ago when 200 people in France developed MS shortly after being given the hepatitis B vaccine. (Source: Neurology, 2004; 63: 838-42).

Ebba Waerland of Switzerland advocates a short detoxifying programme, followed by largely raw, unprocessed foods, no sugar, plenty of Vitamin B, plus brewer’s yeast. Dr. Joseph Evers of West Germany offers following Diet regimen. (a) Raw milk and milk products, provided you are not allergic to them. Cow’s or Goat’s milk is allowed, so also butter, cheese and soured milks. (b) Sprouted grains, such as, rye and wheat. (c) All fresh and seasonal fruits. (d) Unprocessed honey. (e) Nuts and other oil-containing foods. (f) Organically grown root vegetables, particularly beets. (g) A raw egg daily beaten into milk with honey, as eggnog, can be taken. Prohibited foods are: All fried, cooked, baked foods. Coffee, tea, cocoa, alcohol, mustard, salt, sugar and sugar substitutes.

Roger MacDougal, 62, who himself recovered from MS after 20 years and who has helped thousands of completely immobilized and wheelchair patients, also has a treatment plan which slightly differs from Evers plan. MacDougal insists that there be a complete absence of foods containing gluten, whether they are from rye, wheat barley or oats.

Multiple sclerosis rarely has its onset in the first decade of life. The overwhelming majority of patients realize the onset of disease between ages 20 and 40. Multiple Sclerosis is a condition resulting from deep and long-standing disturbances to our systems. These disturbances can be brought on by emotional and physical trauma from the past or long-term exposure to toxic substances like lead, mercury, fluoride, aluminum (found in deodorants and anti-perspirants), aspartame, etc. The causes and triggers for this autoimmune disorder, one of so many in our time, can vary greatly among individuals, so treatment is tailored specifically to every patient. Therefore, the successful approach would include all the dietary recommendations and issues pertaining to lifestyle and regimen, and possible non-harmful therapies to promote healing and alleviate symptoms.

"Paralyzed nerves can be treated" records Dr. E.D.Babbitt, MD, LL.D., "by rekindling the action of the nerve ethers, and by opening up the depolarized or clogged nerve channels". He adds: "Three styles of force are more potent than other known agencies; first, the application of a warm, magnetic hand over the leading nerve centers and limbs; second, the focussing of yellow-orange light over these nerve centers; and, third, the application of hot water, or other hot substances, to the same places". Homeopathic Hypericum, Ledum, Lathyrus, Arnica could also be tried effectively.

Those who live closer to equator are less likely to get this crippling disease, avers Dr. Paul Goldberg, from Cambridge, USA, because there is no smog and one gets plenty of Vitamin D through the sunlight. Linoleic acid (sunflower seed oil) and ordinary baked beans which is known to flush out the lead poisoning from the system are also indicated to help the MS patients.

A just and humane city run with a "rule of law"

Mumbai city's problems are a classic manifestation of poor and short-term
urban management, underdevelopment of rural India, and the consequent
unchecked migration. In many ways, the challenge of Mumbai is the challenge
of India itself. Mumbai needs to find win-win answers to satisfy all in
the long term as well as the short term.

Lok Satta believes an open, reasoned public dialogue and debate are needed
on this contentious issue. If the various stakeholders of Mumbai and the
government are willing, Lok Satta can propose modern techniques of
decision-making. For instance, deliberative democracy is a tool employed
in a scientific and rational manner to deal with such issues. Some Chinese
cities are applying it with the help of Stanford University (California,
USA). If Mumbaikars of all hues are ready and willing, Lok Satta can
certainly facilitate such engagement and dialogue. We can thus arrive at a
satisfactory solution through
constructive engagement.

To facilitate the above goals, Lok Satta had a meeting with
IMPROVEMENT OF QUALITY OF LIFE IN MUMBAI SUBURBS [IOQLMS], an NGO on
the subject. Minutes of the meeting can be found at

[When will intelligent citizens and orgs get out of this wishful thinking -
"If the various stakeholders of Mumbai and the government are willing"?
Responsibility has to be taken rather than waiting for it to be given.

Dear Vinay,

We appreciate your great efforts to bridge all NGOs-Funding supporters  together through your  Karmayog e-group.

Last week, a  local NGO group from Pune visited Ratnagiri District (Chiplun and Sangmeshwar talukas), and they have a devastating and horrific picture of destruction to tell which no media has covered. Our group of volunteers visited 17 villages braving torrential rains, wading  through slush to reach the remote, almost inaccessible villages. They witnessed  that landslides and rains had washed away entire villages - most of them belonging to very poor fisher folks and small farmers, who in a state of shocked  trance  were digging through moulds of debris, pushing huge boulders with bare hands to search for their buried kith and kiln. Everywhere they went the  area was filled with overpowering stench of decaying flesh.  All they could find were body parts  (a piece of human hand or leg) that speaks of the extent of damage done by falling boulders. Many huts have been completely flattened. There may be many more villages of which we are unaware at present, but once the rain fury abides we will get a clear picture of the deluge.

Entire villages were wiped away, the shivering survivours clung to each other  for support, sheltering on higher grounds in local schools (or what was left of them in some areas), with no water  and food. With fields under water and other means for survival the villagers are left to fend for themselves. Our team visited the following villages and assessed the approximate number of affected families:

        Chiplun Taluka:-
    -Gavalkat village -70 families
    -Mazre Kashi -village -40 families
    -Dalvatne village -20 families
    -Khordivillage -300 families
    -Sati village -125 families
    -Kaluste village -30 families
    -Kalambaste village -60 families

-Chiplun and its neighbourhood areas - 300 households
    -Juad village -20 families
    -Donavali village -10 families
    -Ganglai village -10 families
    -Valupe village -10 families

      Sangmeshwar Taluka:-
    -Dingni village -20 families
    -Khongur village -20 families
    -Konde village -10 families
    -Davkhol village -25 families
    -Sakharpe village -200 families
    -Bhad Khamba -village -190 families

The plight of city dwellers received extensive media footage but hardly any cameraman or government machinery covered the extent of damage to the poor remote coastal villages. Many local NGOs in the District are rendered helpless as their  small offices have been indundated with flood waters damaging all equipment.

Can we act and provide succour to those affected?   Our volunteers who spoke to the villagers - say their immediate basic  survival needs are - food, clothing, shelter, medicines; and  for long term measures -  soft loans for housing, starting fishing trade, seeds, equipment for agriculture, purchase of cattle, etc. We have support of our network partners in the district who will volunteer relief work to the affected. The school going children need text books and notes.  Can Karmayog groups  recommend suitable supportive agencies for help.

Our contact person is Adv Assunta Pardhe, Project Director  of Chetana Mahila Vikas Kendra {a human rights and communal peace advocacy NGO working for marginalized women, youth and communities in Pune  slums and Sindhudurg villages  and a network partner of Konkan Vikas Prathisthan, and also a lead NGO for legal literacy in Pune district (selected by Zilla Parishad Pune)}. The NGO has an FCRA certification and all donations are exempt  from IT under 80 G.

Subject: Aamchi Mumbai/Maharashtra in crisis. Is it Karnataka’s turn now?
anugrahajohn@...
Send Email Send Email

Aamchi Mumbai is in great crisis due to the record heavy rainfalls witnessed in
the past few days after almost 100 years. At least 900 people have lost their
lives in the rainfall, so say the newspapers. The air, rail and road transport
services are out of kilt and maybe it will take more than two weeks from now to
get to normalcy provided our Malerai god (the rain god) stops showering rains
for sometime.

On 27th July, my dear friend Dipti who was returning from her college in Matunga
tells me that she spent an overnight walking to her house in Kandivali. There
was so much panic and tension among her family members since they had not heard
from her till 2 am. A Good Samaritan called and informed her parents that she
was safe with her other classmates and was nearly half way through to her house
in Andheri.

Another friend Shailesh recalls that he has never seen such a disaster ever
before and would never like to. He heaved a sigh of relief only when he was
offered a hot cup of tea on his return from the office after a 14 hours walk in
the flood of water. A double deck bus (BEST) was under water and there were many
good hearted social workers who with angelic compassion came to the rescue of
passengers sitting in the bus. The public were not surprised that the government
did an absconding act during such a calamity.

The other day I read in a newspaper on how a young footballer came to the rescue
of many in his neighbourhood. I am grateful to all such kind-hearted friends
who, risking their own lives, helped so many of my fellow Mumbaikars from
suffering and death. Hats off to the real-life heroes!

Even today the situation in Mumbai/Maharashtra is bad and it is likely to get
worse if our Disaster Management Units do not get their acts together. Well, the
buzz is that reel-life heroes have filed a legal suit against the government
over its handling of the devastating floods.

Aamchi Mumbai will obviously survive this crisis with some bad and horrendous
memories. Now, it seems, the people of Karanataka have something similar in
store for them, going by the reports in today’s papers. A news report says:
Reeling under monsoon fury and a burst of flows from Maharashtra rivers,
Karnataka on Monday, 1st August, 2005, sounded a high alert in Belgaum, Bijapur
and Gulbarga districts. Maharashtra released nearly 3 lakh cusecs from its
reservoirs causing floods at villages across north Karnataka. The death toll
has already reached 84. What further havoc will be wrecked by nature’s wrath is
a thought that vexes the mind considerably. I end this note with the quote
“Learn to see in another's calamity the ills which you should avoid”

Yesterday, PAWS team ShivPrasad, Sonali, Nilesh & Kishore went to Vegetable
Market in dombivli east & west and collected left over & unwanted Vegetables &
leaves. Our Matador ambulance full with Vegetables - we carried to Kalyan's
Flood area. Also AtulBhai Doshi of Jain Temple organized 'Dry Grass' for cattle.

We fed all the calf's there. We treated all small scratches on legs & backsides
of buffalos. All the Buffalos are tied in middle of road as all stables are
stinking badly. People there are demanding medicines for themselves & for
animals too.

Whatever medicines we had with us all given away to them. Many Anti-Biotic we
gave them. Dead Carcasses are still lying there & municipal van are picking with
the help of Cranes & JCB machines.

The Situation is now under Control little bit. We require more medicines to give
away, Please call us on 9820161114. Thane District's Animal Husbandry Dept.
put-up a camp there. We helped them in their work too.

Discard the list of medicines given out by the BMC and prevent and
treat the following diseases by using your commonsense, grandma medicines,
and following homoeopathic medicines, which are cheaper, faster and
without any side effects, says Dr. Leo Rebello.

Malaria
China Sulph 3x, Malaria Officinialis 200.

Food poisoning and gastroenteritis
Ars Alb, Cuprum Ars, Carbo Veg or Veratrum Alb in 200 or IM potency.

Typhoid
Baptisia 200
Typhoidinum 1M

Cholera
Chiefly Veratrum Alb, Camphor, Cuprum Met -- 200

Dengue
Eupatorium Perf  200

Leptospirosis
Ars Alb, Pyrogen

Homoeopathic Pyrogen can be used as a broad spectrum preventive,
in a single dose....

Similarly, the following herbs easily obtainable can be used to maintain good
health and get over monsoon maladies.

Echinacea is an antidote to all kinds of poisons, viruses and toxins,
and thereby cures diseases caused by them. It acts as an antidote
to malaria and is also used in typhoid, diarrhoea, dysentery,
cholera infantum, chronic and foetid bronchitis.

Neem (Azadirachta indica) - nature’s panacea for all ills - antiseptic,
antipyretic, anthelmintic and has curative uses in jaundice,
dysmenorrhoea, psoriasis, urticaria, pruritus and several skin disorders.

Also keep handy Jeera powder, haldi (turmeric), kayam churna,
Avla powder, chyavan prash, liv 52.

It is time we became aware of the shocking reality that 90 per cent of
all diseases are nutritional disorders. So, take following fruit juices for

Colds : orange, lemon, grapefruit, pineapple, carrot, onion.
Coughs (including bronchitis and asthma) : grapes, orange, lemon, carrot, radish, celery.
Diarrhoea : apple, carrot, celery.
Headaches : grape, lemon, tomato, lettuce, parsley, cucumber, beet.
Influenza : apple, grape, lemon, lettuce, carrot, celery.
Malaria : carrot, papaya, pomegranate.
Typhoid : all citrus fruits.

AND FAIL NOT TO TAKE FOLLOWING PRECATIONS
1.. Do not go bare feet or get wet in rains, specially if you have wounds.
2.. Drink lots of clean water.
3.. Wash your hands, face, feet before sitting down to eat.
4
.. If you have come in contact with animals, or handled sick people,
or lifted dead bodies, in particular, take bath before eating.
5
.. Prefer clean and freshly cooked food. Congee or Kanji is the best
food in monsoon. Hot soups and broths too should be preferred to
fried and oily substances.
6..
Do not eat old / stale refrigerated foods and avoid meats.
7
.. Drink fresh buttermilk and eat curds (yogurt).
That will protect your stomach and intestinal lining.
8.. Use mosquito nets for sleeping in, or neem cream or eucalyptus oil on the skin.
9.
.Don’t panic.
10. Avoid allopathic drugs or vaccinations.

All the best

Subject: BEWARE -- some time we do more harm with good intentions
leorebello@...
Send Email Send Email

On August 1, Karma Yog, with good intentions circulated a big
list of Allopathic medicines supply required by the BMC to tackle
so-called diseases due to Floods.

Well-meaning people of Mumbai as per their commitment
immediately started supplying these medicines.
But I would like to sound a note of caution for the reasons given below :

(a) Many of these medicines/injections/supplies will be received
by the BMC free and the corrupt will sell them to the patients or chemists.

(b) Many of these medicines are unnecessary, and with severe side effects.
For example, Tab. Chloroquine Ds leads to leukamia.  So you treat simple
diseases now and later suffer from more serious illnesses. In other words
due to our ignorance, we can do more harm than doing good.

Whose idea it is to use "Mass Immunization for all the dwellers of Mumbai
as Preventive Measure"?  This is NOT only unnecessary but the person
who has mooted this idea has his or her eyes firmly set on crores of kickbacks.
We have not one Goswami, but several of them in the BMC because of whom
we have been grounded now for the last one week.  Shame.

Let the BMC concentrate on following essential services or face Public ire
through Public Interest Litigations.  Enough is enough.

(a) Clean up nullahs and gutters.
(b) Remove mountains of debris.
(c) Remove carcasses.
(d) Clean daily garbage.
(e) Supply clean water.
(f)  Ensure essential supply of milk, vegetables, fruits, eggs, fish,
foodgrains, kerosene and cooking gas.

Government should ensure that people do NOT hoard, spread rumours
and the suppliers / hoteliers do NOT loot people by increasing prices.

Let the BMC and Police also fine people throwing garbage out on the streets and
stop the use of plastic bags and recycle plastic bottles and cans, which is one of
the main causes of flooding.

In Medicine we are taught, FIRST DO NOT HARM.  Even in Social Work,
while rushing to help, first think - or you will do more harm than doing good.
I would reduce the long list of medicines prepared by the BMC to ONLY three items -

Neutrolin B
Glucose Powder (fresh)
B Complex tablets (not old)

Time and again it has been proved in all disasters that people help themselves.
Help from other sources comes much later. Likewise, Health Care is Self Care.
See another email giving out clear instructions on how we can guard against diseases
unleashed by the BMC by failing to perform its essential duty.

Karma Yogis use your commonsense and homoeopathic and herbal medicines,
which are safer, cheaper and faster, rather than unwittingly becoming a part of the
Medicine Mafia.

Best Wishes
Dr. Leo Rebello

BMC says the biggest help from NGOs and doctors would be if they would take
ambulances to affected areas along with a stock of medicines and a team of
doctors and advise and examine and treat people.

If this could be done on a house-to-house basis, that would be best.

BMC would also like reports about the extent of problems in each area and
what sort of help is needed there.

Chlorine tablets should also be distributed to purify the water.

If help is needed from BMC e.g. chlorine tablets, medicines, identification
of areas, pl contact the Ward Office or DMC at 1916 or 108 or let me know.

Basically, BMC would like authentic feedback of the situation on the ground
in detail and thus would appreciate help from NGOs.

A social organisation of 3000 people are interested in helping in flood
relief. They can organise money to buy things i.e. not to donate money
itself. They also want to be actually involved. They are interested in areas
in or outside Mumbai.

If you are an NGO or an organisation who can do with their support, they
need a 1- or 2-page proposal about needs, location of problem, extent of
problem, costs, timings, infrastructure available and needed, what is needed
to be done, and exactly how it is to be done.

They will then get this very quickly approved by their committee and will
swing into action. The size of the project is not relevant. They can take on
various projects.

To give an idea, they can rehab 1000 families, or can adopt an area, or can
adopt an entire village.

The group consists of people from all walks of life. They would prefer to
supplement the efforts of an existing org e.g. NGO, or at least have a core
team from that affected area.

They would like that proposals be sent to them urgently and through
Karmayog.
