WORKSHOP ON DATTAK VASTI YOJANA WITH CONCERNED NGOs AND CBOs ENGAGED IN SLUM SANITATION PROGRAMME

Date: Saturday, 28th Jan 2006

Time: 10 am to 12:30 pm

Program: Selected CBOs will present best practices and learnings

Chair: Shri Subrat Ratho, AMC (CITY), MCGM

This is a joint program of MCGM and the NGO Council.

All 249 CBOs who are conducting the Dattak Vasti Yojana's will be invited so that they can learn from those who are able to manage the program well, and also get a better understanding of the DVY scheme.

All NGOs active in slums (whether involved in DVY or not) are requested to attend to understand the DVY scheme and to get involved in the future.

If you would like to attend or talk or if you want specific problems or suggestions to be discussed, please contact Mr. Anand Jagtap, Officer on Special Duty, on 98212-40320 or adjagtap@... . He is co-ordinating the event.

Background Note:

In slum areas where 60% of Mumbai’s population is residing, the role of community participation is very crucial in Solid Waste Management. SWM activities cannot achieve its minimum standards in cleanliness unless there is greater partnership between MCGM and citizens. Citizens as major stakeholders have to play vital role in this partnership.

The traditional contract system for cleanliness activities does not provide enough scope for community participation. In this context, community-led activities e.g. Dattak Vasti Yojana was seen as a alternative to the formal contract practices.

Dattak Vasti Yojana began in 2001. Presently there are total 249 CBOs engaged in implementing  DVY. They are providing cleanliness services to 47 lakh population in slum areas.

These CBOs have gained certain experiences of managing SWM activities at micro level. The workshop is for CBOs to share experiences and learnings and best practices with other CBOs, NGOs, BMC officials, etc., to further improve DVY.

Operational Details, etc., are in the Cleanliness Section in www.karmayog.org .
