EXHIBITION CUM SEMINAR ON SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN MUMBAI
Solid waste management in Mumbai emerging trends and opportunities
MSW management here we are referring to the “Technologies/innovations/practices/methods/ideas available for Reducing, Recycling and Reusing of the solid wastes in Mumbai”.
Rationale behind organizing PARIVARTHAN-2006.
- In city of Mumbai there are multiple expertise in the field of MSW management whose potentials are not being suffificiently uplifted into regular administration in MCGM.
- There has been growing concern for participation in MSW management
- There has been growing concern for excluded groups.
- The exchanges concerning to MSW management are being restricted into higher levels of MCGM’s administration.
The objective of the event will be as fallowing
- To make available a forum for showcasing various eco friendly and cost effective technology for MSW management in MCGM’s Environmental cell in co-ordination with Citizens groups,NGO’s,Governemnet organizations in city of Mumbai
- To enable discussion /Exchange from various organizations and resource persons from Mumbai as well as people from outside Mumbai who have been demonstrated similar success models in MSW management.
- To initiate dialogue among various stakeholders, this can lead to articulation and implementation of Zero waste Mumbai.
The event will be divided into 2 parts

1. Seminar:DARPAN-2006
1. To discuss the issues/problems/ideas/ regarding the solid waste management in the city of Mumbai. The seminar will be designed in consultation with various institutions and agencies, which are working on solid waste management in Mumbai.
The list of institutions, resource persons, agencies is being finalized once the date and venue are being finalized for the event.
- Costs/Budget/Expenses for the event has to be finalized after the permission from MCGM’s Environmental cell/AMC CITY
- In addition, efforts will be made to get the sponsorship from the Corporates, Concerned citizens once the discussion and permissions are being given by field supervisor-Mrs.Seema Redkar and Faculty incharge Dr.Amita Bhide and Mr.Vinay, Karmayog/NGO Council.
2.Exhibition:DIFFUSION-2006
1. Exibiting the low cost technologies available solid waste Management, which includes organic/inorganic/toxic/medical wastes in city of Mumbai in consultation with MCGM, NGO’s, who are working in this regard.
The list of the NGO’s and Groups will be finalized after the Finalization of the event’s date and venue.

DIFFUSION-2006 SEMINAR DETAILS:
The seminar on MSW management is designed with an idea to present the issues, problems, ideas regarding the MSW management in the city of Mumbai and also to compare the success models of the MSW management in other cities across India. The seminar will be designed with a focus on expert paper presentations on various issues listed below fallowed by discussions by the concerned groups.
The objectives of the seminar are:
1. To provide a comprehensive understanding of the Municipal solid waste management by MCGM
2. To understand the different MSW wastes and their present management systems, alternative strategies available and future strategies.
3. The role of NGO’s, Citizen Groups, in MSW management. To understand the role played by different groups for Recycling, Reuse and Reducing the MSW wastes.
4. To explore the issues, problems regarding the overlapping functions of the MSW management by different authorities, agencies,
5. To understand and identify the issues and derive strategies for unorganized MSW management by waste picking groups, scrape dealers, recycling groups and scope to improve the conditions of these groups.
6. To develop linkages for future MSW management and sustainability of land fills, spaces for solid waste disposal.
7. Issues of toxic waste, Medical waste and E-waste handling
8. Emerging challenges and future of MSW management in Mumbai.
Discussion point:
The elaboration of the each objectives and Topics and invitation for the presenters has to be discussed in the meeting with Vinay.
2.DIFFUSION-2006.EXHIBITION.
The exhibition will be showcasing the cost effective and eco friendly technologies available for MSW management in the city of Mumbai as well as the similar kind of successful technologies out side of Mumbai which needs to be popularized as well as needs to be demonstrated to the people who needs the technologies and innovations for MSW management.
In the above shown triangle there is overlapping and joint efforts from the NGO’s, MCGM, Citizen groups, Citizens of Mumbai,Institutions,Organisations,Companies, Media persons, Societies as EXHIBITORS and VISITORS.
The EXHIBITORIES which are being demonstrated are all success stories which are being experimented, innovated by MCGM itself or by NGO’s, Citizen Groups or by the individual citizen himself.
There will be combination of demonstrations relating to MSW management which are both house hold management as well as large scale out door/industrial processing models.
