Dr Gopa Kothari was awarded the 2004 World of Children Cardinal Health Children’s Care Award on Nov 16 for her outstanding work in the field of healthcare for children. This recognition includes a US $100,000 cash prize.

Kothari is the first Indian to win this honour. She was selected out of 143 entries from 23 nations. The award was presented by a US-based non-profit international children’s welfare organisation, World of Children.

Dr Kothari established Eye Care Charitable Trust in 1982, which works towards family health, nutrition, treatment and education programmes for children living in urban slums.

“For 22 years I have been working towards immunisation, creating awareness and training women in slums in different vocations like mehendi courses, sewing, etc so that they in turn can ensure a better future for their kids,” says Dr Kothari who has worked in 14 slums across the city.

Dr Kothari was nominated for the award by Operation Eyesight, a Canadian organisation, which works in partnership with eye hospitals and clinics in developing nations. This organisation had supported Kothari’s work in Mumbai slums for more than 20 years.
