My family settled in Crawford Co.Ks in 1856.I have been told endless
stories about the day the Bushwackers came to Cato and killed several
people. There are suppose to be a couple of the bushwackers that were
shot and buried at Trogdon Cemetery near my house.
Also have a story on how my gr grand father was born in a tent because
the new log cabin didn't have wooden floors and gr gr grandma Martha
refused to move in until her husband installed them.Gr grandpa was born
in April of 57 so you can imagine the cold she went through LOL BUT she
got her floors

My grandmother talked about the "dust bowl" days. She
said she had to hang sheets over the doors and
windows. She would rinse them out and hang them back
up wet. That helped to block the dust out of the
house.

When she cooked dinner she had to watch and keep food
covered. It would look like someone shook pepper over
the food. When she set the table, she turned cups
upside down, put the tableware under the plates with
them upside down. There would be a ring of dirt around
each item on the table. When they put food on the
plates, there would be a ring around each bit of food.

Also - during WW II the area I grew up in in western
Kansas (Gove, Logan, and Scott counties) was used for
a gunnery range. The US air force would do target
practice in that area shooting at whatever they
fancied. Residents were moved off their farms and
relocated elsewhere. Most of the people were so hard
up for money they had to sneak in and work the ground
when the USAF was not practicing. My dad tells of
driving the tractor, hearing airplanes and stopping to
clamber under the tractor until they were through
shooting. We dug shells out of the rocky hillside in
the pasture for a number of years afterward.

Western Kansans were always ready to help each other.
It did not matter who you were. A prairie fire would
nearly wipe out the whole end of the state if not
stopped. Everyone for miles around would come help
fight fires to avoid that disaster. If one farmer
needed a hand with his work, they often traded or
sometimes a neighbor would just show up and pitch in
helping with whatever needed done.

By the 1950s a lot of the farm land was owned by
people living some distance away. Many lived in or
around Colorado. They flew in to the local airport and
stayed long enough to farm their land, plant the crop
or harvest it. They got the name "suitcase farmer"
because they didn't live on the land they farmed.
Their practice raised a lot of havoc with the
environment. Many times thistles overtook the land or
they dust blew from them not being there to take care
of it. Sometimes they would hire "tennent farmers" to
live on the land and work on it.

My great, great grandfather and his family along with
a large group of friends moved to Kansas arriving
shortly before winter. They were able to put up a
house to live in before bad weather hit, but did not
have time to make a barn. My gg grandfather moved his
horses up close to the house and covered them with
heavy blankets to protect them. His brother had the
team of horses they used to get supplies from quite a
distance away. These horses were broght INSIDE the
house to protect them. During this time, they
experienced a bad blizzard.

Ok I am giving you the Hook family lore and also a story my cousing
Phil told me

This occurred between 1867 and 1890
There were these two fellows living along lightening creek. One day
they accused two drifters of stealing their cattle. In those days
cattle rustling was considered the worse of the worse.Great Grandpa
John and other neighbors went to look for the fellows who stole the
cattle when they found them they held court right where they were
found them guilty and hung them. A few weeks later it was found out
the two men who made the accusation had lied.

Hook family lore
    Hooke Family Lore
                                                 Notes by Katherine
Hooke Hubbell
John Canada Hooke was 9 years old and his brother was 7 years old,
when their mother placed their clothes in a bundle and sent them out
to make their own way in the world. I know nothing more about them
until after the Civil War. I don't even know the name of his brother.
John served in the war between the state in the Illinios 49th
infantry. He was wounded in the back on the first day of the battle of
Shiloh. He returned to duty a month after his injury
Following the war, a party was held to celebrate the return of the
soldiers. John Canada was 26 and just back from the war. At the party,
he met Louisa Catherine Negley, it was love at first sight for both
John and Louisa. Three weeks later they were married and in a covered
wagon on their way from Illinois to Kansas.
Louisa was only 16 years old when she married. She was the youngest of
a large family. She had been the pampered one of the family all her
life. She was intended to be the "Lady of the Negley Family", so
instead of teaching her cooking, sewing, and the ordinary household
duties, she was taught music and dance. The family was disappointed
when she married, feeling that she let them down by marrying a man of
"unknown qualities."
Grandma Hook told me herself about some of the problems she faced when
she married knowing nothing about keeping house or cooking.
They traveled by covered wagon and three families camped close
together, the Inmans, Lemons, and Hooks. One evening she was cooking
navy beans over a campfire and when she went to stir them, there were
little white things floating on the top of the beans. She was
heartbroken and crawled into the covered wagon and cried. Mrs. Inman
asked her what the matter was and Louisa sobbed, "The beans are wormy
and I don't have anything else to cook." Mrs. Inman soothed her and
explained that the beans were not wormy, that the little white things
were just the heart of the beans!
When they arrived in Kansas, they filed a homestead 1 ½ miles north
west of Monmouth, Kansas and John built a little one room sod house.
One day, an Indian chief rode into the yard. When Louisa saw him, she
was frightened, expecting him to kill her at once. All Grandma knew
about indians was that they killed white people. She began screaming
at the top of her voice. John was just a short distance away, and he
came running. Meanwhile, the Indian kept repeating, "Me no hurt missy,
me no hurt." John arrived and straightened things out. After that, the
Indian Chief was a frequent visitor to the farm.
About a year later, while still in the little one room soddy, their
first child, John Charles, was born. When he was three or four months
old, Grandma was feeding him with a bottle. One day, she heard John
Charles cooing happily in his crib. She went over to check on him as
he sounded so happy. When she peeked in the cradle she saw a big black
snake sucking on the baby's bottle. Of course, Grandma began to scream
and Grandpa came running and killed the snake. John Charles seemed to
miss the snake but snakes were not kept as pets in those days!
Some years later, they built a two story house on the homestead, but
they kept the little sod house for the kitchen. They raised four boys
and a girl on the farm. When John Charles married, John Canada and
Louisa moved to Monmouth and John Charles and Rachael lived on the
farm. John and Rachel lived on the farm for several years before
moving to Weir City. I don't know why they moved nor do I know what
kind of work John Charles did. John Charles died of Typhoid fever in 1898.
John Canada and Louisa lost a little girl, India Ella, at 9 months
from whooping cough.

Peace
TL

I do remember an interesting story told to my by the owner of an old
homestead I was trespassing on (shame on me) while out bottle hunting one
day. I can't remember where the heck it was located at. I know we were on
our way to Coronado Hights with my kids, from Lindsbourgh, we did quite a
bit of wandering the roads in between looking for a prospective digging
spot.
The landowner spotted us and struck up a conversation with us about the
place. It was a large 2 story home, with the back area pretty much blown to
kingdom come. He said the military accidentally hit the home with their
weapons and destroyed the home, while a young family was living there.
Anyone heard about this? I wish I could remember where I came across it!

Had the owners contact info as another treasure hunter, but misplaced it.

thanks for any info
Angie

I have never heard that that farmers
in some parts of W. Kansas were

Twas the night after Thanksgiving

I just couldn't sleep,

I tried counting backwards,

I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned -

the dark meat and white,

but I fought the temptations

with all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation,

the thought of a snack was infatuation.

So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door,

and gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,

pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,

"til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling,

floating into the sky,

with a mouthful of pudding

and handful of pie.
But, I managed to yell

as I soared past the trees...

Happy eating to all -

pass the cranberries, please.

May your stuffing be tasty,

may your turkey be plump,

may your 'tater 'n gravy have narry a lump.

May your yams be delicious,

may your pies take the prize,

may your holiday dinner stay off of your thighs.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Doesn't a "Lease" require money to exchange hands? That wouldn't
necessarily fall under the category of "driven off". If it did.they should
have read the contract a little closer..

Does Imminent Domain come into
play here? If the Gov't the
land for a couple of years but didn't
want to buy it....
could people have been pressured
into a lease?
Interesting questions.
DId the Gov't used huge acreages
rather than a farm here and a farm
over a couple of miles?

Hello, Everyone;

I know I have not been active on here in some time. Parkinson's
Disease has taken abilities from me, but I am still working on
various projects slowly.

One project I started recently is to collect post cards from Kansas
and other states and countries. This will be a cool something to
show my nephew later. If you would like to contribute, send me email

Hello, Everyone;

I created a photo album for Kansas genealogy or history theme post
cards. The folder can include scans from similar photos which might
be made into post cards if someone wanted.

By the way I found a Web site where photos can be made into post
cards. http://www.winkflash.com/

Hello, Everyone;

I have created two photo albums in the Kansas Heritage group. One
album is for post cards (including schools) and the other one is just
for one room school photos.

Check out the photos I posted in these new albums already.

Smith AND Jones!!! That's a big haystack you're looking in......
I've got a big stack of Jones myself, I'll dig around in it...but I don't know
anything beyond 1830.

My Great-Great Grandfather was Andrew Jackson Jones, who told his children that
he was born in January of 1830 on the Allegheney river at Freeport,
Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, none of them made note of who his parents or
siblings may have been. I find him in the census as "Jackson" Jones. He moved
to Kansas in 1879 with his family.

who lived in Crawford and Cherokee counties please feel free to email me. I have

Hello all, I was born and raised in Wichita, Sedgwick County,
Kansas. Now I live in Missouri. Still have family there, but they
have little or no interest in family history, and related events.
My grandmother worked at the Lassen Hotel, 1st and Market, Wichita,
Sedgwick County, Kansas. My grandmother was in charge of the
housekeeping department. I have a picture of her in her office. Does
anyone know where I might find more information about the Hotel
Lassen? And those who worked there.
My grandmother keep one of their old 'Shopping Guide And Guest
Information' Books. It says it was one of the Schimmel Hotels. Only
other clues from this book is the AMhurst numbers were used. If it
may have had a phone book in it at one time. But it is gone now.
Only has the business part in the front of it.
Thank you, and have a great day!

Hello everyone! My name is Don and I have been researching my genealogy
since 1999. Most of my relatives settled in northeast kansas in the mid
1800's. I have way too many surmanes to list here but I have a link
that you might like to check out.

If you are related to any of these folks please let me know. I will
gladly share whatever information I have with you.
