FirstNepaleseBuddhistTemple
in the USAConsecrated in Oregon
The first Nepalese Buddhist temple in
the west was consecrated in Portland,
Oregon, on Nov. 8-11, 2009.Among more than two thousand Buddhist temples
and centers in the U.S.,
this is the first devoted to a form of Buddhism practiced in Nepal.Kathmandu
native Prajwal Ratna Vajracharya and American-born Helen Appell joined forces
to create Nritya Mandala Mahavihara. They established the temple as a center of meditation and ritual and as
a home for Dance Mandal: Foundation for Sacred Buddhist Arts of Nepal. Local
building and city codes required some design alterations, though use of woodcarving, coloration, and symbolic
elements conform as closely as possible to a traditional Newar temple. Two Vajracharya priests, Yagnya Man Pati and
Sugata Ratna, came from Kathmandu to join
Prajwal in consecrating the temple as a Mahavihara, a Great Vihara, the first
to be established in at least 350 years. The consecration events opened with a procession of the Buddha statue in
a festive palanquin on a two-mile route through Portland, complete with drums, cymbals,
chanting, and banners and more than a hundred participants.Other days were devoted to installing and
empowering the Buddha image, performing an elaborate fire ritual, lamplight
offerings, raising the pinnacle on the roof, and a closing ceremony of sacred
dance and traditional vocal accompaniment, filling the temple to overflowing
with participants and well-wishers from near and far. An abundance of delicious
Newar homemade food and chai was offered following each event.
Nritya Mandala Mahavihar is now an
inspiring environment for preserving and promoting the practice of the sacred
arts, meditation, and rituals of this last living strand of Sanskrit Buddhism practiced
by the Newars of Nepal.See www.dancemandal.com for more information.
The priests arrived from Nepal early Tuesday and everyday is full of organizing, doing rituals for the big ritual, instruction and training, and finding objects for the consecration- including cow dung- which customs confiscated from their 3 suitcases of ritual items at the airport! [we have fortunately located some.]
Here are the list of events; All times are approximate. If you would like more detailed information see the descriptions that follow below.

on October 25, 2009, at Woodbrook Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. More
than 175 members of the Baltimore-Washington Nepalese community and 30 American
friends enjoyed an evening together celebrating the New Year, eating delicious
traditional foods, and learning about Nepali culture. The party also raised
funds for a worthy causeNahuda, a non-profit organization established in 1992
in Nepal to provide health care to disadvantaged women, especially those living
in rural areas.
The Nepal Sambat 1130 celebration was inaugurated with a Lord Ganesh prayer by
Newah priest Mr. Basav Rajopadhyay followed by the lighting of the traditional
oil lamp, Twadewa, by Mrs. Menuka Shrestha.
Event Chairperson Mr. Season Shrestha welcomed guests and extended greetings for
the New Year. He announced that proceeds from the evening would be donated to
support the Nahuda Well Women Clinic in Sankhamul, Patan, Nepal. Nahuda's main
focus is on reproductive health and the prevention of cervix and breast cancer.
Co-chairperson Mrs. Meena Pradhan shared an appreciation letter from Nahuda
President Mr. Dinesh Raj Sharma. Mr. Sharma applauded the efforts of the Newah
community of Baltimore to help Nahuda provide a free annual clinic membership to
women who need help monitoring their reproductive health. Over the last three
years, this Nepal Sambat celebration has raised more than $1,200.00 for Nahuda's
work.
Co-chairperson Mr. Ravi Pradhan thanked all of the volunteers for their tireless
efforts to make the event successful as well as the participants for their
overwhelming support. He also announced the formation of an ad-hoc committee to
explore chartering a Baltimore chapter of the Newah Organization of America
(NOA).
President of NOA, Mr. Rajesh Shrestha exchanged Nhu Dan Yah Bhintuna greetings
and highlighted current activities of the organization. He led the crowd in
chanting a spirited Bhintuna yah Bhintuna, Nhugu dan yah Bhintuna. Dr. Roshan
Shrestha highlighted the traditions of the Nepal Sambat celebration and
explained how Shankhadhar Sakhwa, as a common citizen, spent his own money to
free society from their loans to the King, marking the beginning of a new era of
financial freedom. Finally, Mr. Chris Siciliano from the Towsontowne Rotary Club
shared information about the club's work donating an ambulance to Seti Ganga
Community Hospital in Damauli, Nepal. Mrs. Nancy Young announced that the Rotary
Club of Hunt Valley, Maryland is planning a wine tasting event on Saturday,
November 14 to raise money for the same hospital in Nepal.
The evening was very festive, and good time was had by all. The delicious Newah
feast (Bhoye) was prepared by Mrs. Meena Pradhan and Ms. Mamata Joshi with
contributions from Mrs. Rohini Shrestha and Mrs. Menuka Shrestha. While guests
enjoyed dinner, the cultural program got underway with singing and dancing.
There was a lovely Newah couples dance performed by Mr. and Mrs. Dhruba Onta, a
beautiful traditional Newah dance by Miss Sadika Maharjan, a typical Tihar dance
by Miss Kritika and Miss Shreeti KC, and a moving, modern Nepali dance by Mr.
Bishnu Shrestha. Live singing performances by Mr. Bishomver Pradhan, Mr. Rajesh
Shrestha, Mr. Dinesh Bhandari, and Mrs. Sarishma Amatya made the event extra
special. DJ Mr. Bishnu Raj Shrestha entertained partygoers throughout the
evening with a wide selection of music for dancing.
Special thanks are extended to following: Kathmandu Kitchen of Towson, Maryland,
for preparing khasi ko masu, chicken tandoori, and aloo chhon; Mr. and Mrs.

According to your remark we both should be out from the group Right ? Then every thing should be settled. If that is the case Drasha will be willing to relax and do his other things but the other guy won't accept that so here you go again..........
drasha might be arrogant or dangerous in your view but not for many who would like to save true idenity as NEWAH not as NEWARI people. So your accusation to drasha is more dangerous than many other dedicatd Newah personnel's view. Without knowing the fact behind the main issue you are just making an assumption based on FAYE KHAN as stock of laughing. If you are truly laughing go ahead it is good for your heart and you will have chance to live many years. Drasha is angry in your eyes based on his direct and straight forward linguistic choice on his views. If you see the same issue is expressed with "Honey Coated "chaakusawaa language you would say he is telling the good thing as other guy did with haaku nugah. Vision of social reformers is always pinching to others who keep on sleeping even though the whole identity is in danger due to overwhelming flow of Khas parampara in Newah home and community. So, the discussion here is simply leading towards one with saving true Newah identity and the other one with shaking hands with Khas baadi newah identity. Now it is your time to decide who is arrogant or angry for what purpose. this much will do it for now. Keep up your good observation deep into the ground of true Newah identity.

Mr/Ms drasha and Rajendra Shrestha,
It seems both of you were involved some time back in talking about holding what you are calling WNC. And now one of you wants to reap the credit and discredit the other. But for a commoner like me, both of you are so arrogant and chauvinist. Both of you are quarreling publicly and making yourself a laughing stock. Mr/Ms drasha, you are more arrogant and dangerous because you have declared in your previous email saying, "We will not be discouraged to campaign against the newly formed PC." You are also very angry person. You rejected to read Layakoo because you are angry with Naresh Bir Shakya. Is this the way we should learn to behave from leaders like you?
I urge both of
you, if you cannot respect each other, please kindly do not write at least against each other, do not make comments on each other's email in the group. Your futile quarrel is discouraging many youths like me.

As Rajendra mentioned I do not have frustration and defeated environment. Our goal is to make a proper and fruitful attempt not in hassle as he is now. So I request you to stay tuned for further information coming along as a global awareness on Newah Heritage to form the WORLD NEWAH ORGNIZATION along with dedicated Newah personnels from Nepal but without Khas Bahunbaadi NRNs like Rajendra. Subhaaye for your respose. Please keep in touch.

Dear Robin Duwal jyu,
Thank you for sharing the email from drasha. It is rather amusing; we take it as just another string of negative outpouring from drasha; nothing special. I think, by now, many in Newa community are used to Drasha's periodic self-defeating verbal assaults. His email only reflects drasha's deep-seated frustration / desperation over his own inability to work in a team; last several years Drasha and Tribhuvan wasted their time just writing long emails after emails advising others and coming up with dime a dozen ideas without any practical work plans nor finding any right partners to work with.
Pleased be informed that the newly formed WNC PC is equally committed and determined to move ahead with the preparatory works as mandated by the public meeting that took place a fortnight ago in presence of many global NRNs and newa leaderships in Kathmandu; WNC PC will soon start working towards establishing necessary networks with newa communities across the world through affiliated NRNs and will develop a work program that would be both practical and acceptable to all including local political leadership.
Please be advised that there aren't any hidden agenda/facts behind newly constituted WNC PC. WNC PC will do its best to complete the mandated tasks and lead WNC to a successful conclusion. The decision made at the public meeting was a right move and a sincere effort towards building Newa solidarity; we appreciate everybody's inputs (- including negative ones) as well as their active participation in our preparatory effort.

Subhaaye for recent Laaykoo I have no intention to read it now on because you have dishonored all my work in preparation of WNC PC with influence of two khas baadi NRNs. So the step you have adopted is the one of the most unwanted attempt for world NEWAH community. You may think that was the right think to do with out knowing the facts hiding behind the participating NRNs from USA. I hope you will rethink what you have done in hassle before they return home. Believe it or not we will not be discouraged to campaign against the newly formed PC.
On this occasion of NEW year I Wish you to gain positive encouragement with out influence of NRNs for the Newah cause and issues.

I do this all the time . I guess I won't be doing it ANY more!
A few days ago, a person was recharging his mobile phone at home.
Just at that time a call came in and he answered it with the Instrument still connected to the outlet.
After a few seconds electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the ground with a heavy thud.
His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious, with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers.
He was rushed to the nearby
hospital,
but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Cell phones are a very useful modern invention.
However, we must be aware that it can also be an instrument of death.
Never use the cell phone while it is hooked to the electrical outlet!
