Description

Welcome to the Junk Rig List. After searching for information on the internet pertaining to the Junk Rig, I've realized that there is not a lot of information out there. This list has been created to discuss the design building and sailing of the Chinese Junk Rig. List members will also be able to post relevant articles and pictures.

Note: The Files and Photos sections have been re-opened for new submissions. Yahoo! have increased the limits on Files and Photos so that we now have enough space to use them again. The overflow group, junkrig2, still exists. See Junkrig2.

The feature photo shows the front cover of the newly re-published "Practical Junk Rig" by Blondie Hasler and Jock McLeod. This seminal work on rigging western boats with Chinese junk rigged sails has been out of print for several years. It is now being published in the UK by Adlard Coles Nautical and in the US by Tiller Books.

Photo contributions of new or old junks are always welcome.

Re: masts
The number that you need before mast height is the sail area that you want to hang on it. Then you can determine mast height depending on the sail geometry

Re: masts
it is not simply the size of the boat but also the type and version of junk sail that determines the mast.  High aspect (tall and narrow) Low aspect (shorter

Re: Simplifying Duckworks' Polytarp Based Sail Design?
My Van Loan sails are heavy polytarp, taped and sewn (except where the battens lay...just tape there). I used the polytarps because I wanted to make sure I
