Julia Converse Sober works primarily in metals and polymer clay to create unusual mixed-media jewelry. Found objects, electronic parts, and hardware contrast with sterling silver and finely-finished polymer elements in her designs, giving her work an industrial edge. Formal influences of art deco, art nouveau, and abstract expressionism complement a personal visual vocabulary of cell structures, atomic structures, and images of microscopic life.
By day Julia works as a university Radiation Safety Officer ensuring safety and regulatory compliance for university researchers working with radiation. By night she fosters her passion for making jewelry by taking classes in the eventual pursuit of a B.F.A. in metals. In her spare time she teaches polymer clay workshops in design, jewelry construction, and her polymer enamel transfer technique.
