Hi, went and voted and since Possum was Alexander's son and
I descend from Alexander I guess I am a possum. The black
eyes are in my family, they skipped me but my youngest
daughter has them.

I have put what Joyce pictures I have on the Joyce groups at Yahoo.com.  They are of James Anderson Joyce and his descendants except for the picture of Jaye Joyce who was the daughter of William J. Joyce, M.D.

I am sorry I misspelled the name of William J. Joyce's daughter.  It should have been Faye and not Jaye.

Hi JB, and other Joyce cousins,

Just got back from my second Thursday morning trip to "Joyce Country". It
wasn't quite as rushed or eventful as last week, but, I stayed busy.
First stop, looking for my grandfather's old country store.Found a two room
cinderblock building on Ledbetter Rd. but it just didn't look like the one I
remember. I took pictures and will have to check with the "quilters" to see
if it is the right one.

Second stop, Farris Park, home to the "Possum Joyce" cemetary. Yes, the
fenced in ancient cemetary is right in the middle of a city park. I am
assuming the descendants of John "Possum" donated the land for the park and
probably some of them still live in that area.If you check the map on my
website,It doesn't show the park but it located on Park Rd. ,just southwest
of the bottom red arrow. It is located right where Beaver Island Creek
crosses Park Rd,on both sides of the road. The park has paddle boates
,minigolf,Baseball and soccer fields, hiking trails ,etc.

Third stop,Ayersville Baptist Church cemetary, located on Ayersville road
west of yelllow "Joyce Country. Evidently, the possum side took the Beaver
Island creek area and the coon side took the Mayo River area.I stopped and
catalogued 47 plus "Joyce" headstones and about 100 names with birth and
death dates.(another full day of typing into the computer). While at this
cemetary I happened to notice two sweet gray haired ladies who were busying
themselves adjusting flowers on one of the graves. I walked over and started
up a conversation by asking, "Looks like you have to be a Martin or a Joyce"
to get into this place"? They had been working on the graves of their
parents;G. Hardin Joyce and Rosie E. Joyce.Their names were Edith Chattin
and Evilene Massey. We talked for fifteen minutes or so,Boy do I need a tape
recorder. They had several brother, sisters, and other kinfolk buried in this
cem.
Fourth stop, Brewer Road ! My grandfather,Martin is buried in a small family
cem, about 10 or less graves.Brewer Road is located just east of the bottom
red arrow on my map.
Fifth stop,Joyce School Road! Site of an old "school house building",but I
don't have a story on it yet.Hopefully the quilters can help me!
Sixth stop, Joyce Chapel! No cars ,no lights! Maybe I missed the
quilters. Will have to try again another Thursday.
Seventh stop! Fuzzy's B-B-Q! Owned by a Joyce "cousin". It was
lunchtime, they were extremmely busy,no time for a chat with the owner.maybe
next trip!-

I just realized today!!,that the Possum and Coon lands were really close
together! Alot of the old roads connecting them are now dead ends or un
paved!

I found this small cemetary after a logging company started clearing the land around it . It is located at the end of Joyce Ford Rd. on the left hand side. There are about 15 marked graves. I was only able to connect 4 of these to specific people in my file. If you know the father/mother of any relative of these please let me know.-Thanks Tom

I have come across a posting from a Joyce researcher on myfamily.com
stating that Thomas Joyce, father of "Coon"'s wife was named Elizabeth
Smith but he lists nothing more. Has anyone else seen this and what
would be the source?

This page includes the four sons of Alexander's four sons;James, Elijah, Robert, & John.

Categories listed include :White males over 16
                                      White males under 16
                                      All females
                                      others
                                      Slaves

This page also includes in second column: John Joyce & Thomas Joyce. This Thomas must be s/o Alexander but this John is probably s/o Thomas.

Help me! if you look closely beside the name of the second John you will see a symbol or letter(?) . It almost looks like a "P". Could this second John be John "Possum" and the John in column 1 would be John "Coon",s/o /Thomas?

Hello,

I've just joined this list and am looking for John T. Joyce's relatives.  He was my GGGrandfather and came to America in the 1880's from Tipperary Ireland.  He settled in Chicago, married Mary Elizabeth Barrett and had 10 children.  The oldest surviving son is my Great Grandfather.  John was instrumental in organizing the strike in the Stockyards that led to better working conditions.

I do have some family information (mostly through the census and Chicago Voter registration lists), but not a lot.

Hi, Eileen ... my heart stopped when I began reading your letter ... my grandfather's name was John Thomas Joyce, came from Ireland in 1883. But there the similarity ends ... he stayed in New York.
Hope you find info on yours!

Hi listers

Is anyone researching Joyces from Leicestershire from 1500's onward from
around Blackfordby, Breedon, Boothorpe, Ashby and vicinity?

I have been able to track my Joyce line to Alexander Joyce born in Virginia in 1750.  His father was named Thomas, but I (and several others researching the Joyce's) have hit a brick wall on Thomas.  Don't know if he was born in Virginia or came over from the UK..  We can't find information re: his spouse.  Alexander's siblings are Mary b. 1748, Virginia, Sarah b. 1749, Virginia, John A. (Coon) b. 1750 Charlotte County, Virginia, Hanna b. 1754 Lunenburg County, Virginia.  Did your Joyces come over early 1700's?

The information I have says his wife's name was Eleanor Thorton.  Some say Thomas was born in Ireland but I don't know for sure.

I thought that Eleanor was the spouse for awhile, then someone disproved that.  I'll have to dig out my emails and cite the information.  I would like to pursue the notion though.
