Received via email. I hope Sr. C is as happy about this as I am.

Omri's website can be found here

http://www.ezermizion.org/Services/Bone_Marrow_Registry/120.htm

~~~~~~~~~
Israel radio announced that more than 30,000
  people turned out to
donate blood to Ezer MiZion's campaign to try to
  find a suitable bone
marrow transplant to save life of 13 year old
  Omri Attia. Not only
was a donor found for Omri but for 6 other people
  as well.  7 lives
can now be saved B[aruch] H[ashem].
All of you who donated blood or contributed in
  some other way to try
to save Omri will be blessed.
It is written that one who saves even one life is
  as though one had
saved the entire universe.
7 lives saved.  What good people Israelis are to
  take off a little
time to donate blood to try to save a dying
  child.
A real Chanukah miracle!
Hola everyone,
Sunday, March 19th was St. Joseph's day so 13 members of the José
Carreras Society of America met At the Bryant Park Grill in NYC to
honor Josep on his Saint's Day.  After a heartfelt toast to our
favorite tenor, we enjoyed a delicious brunch along with lots of
lively conversation as well as a chance to see photos from Josep's
Christmas concert in Barcelona. We were especially pleased that
Society President, Debbie Blumenthal was able to join us for this
festive gathering.
Plans are currently being made for the annual fundraising walk for
the José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation in May. Details
will be available shortly and we hope that even more of you will be
able join us for this always fun-filled event.
Hasta luego,
Audrey
Happy Holidays to all. I just returned from Barcelona and, though it's
9pm here in New York, for me it is 3am. The Concert at the Palau de la
Musica Catalana, on December 22, was so beautiful. Jose Carreras was in
marvelous voice and he looks wonderful. (Why do some of those articles
circulating on the internet describe him as frail? There was nothing
frail about him on Thursday.) This magnificent concert hall was packed
to the rafters and the members of the audience clearly enjoyed the
performance of our favorite tenor.
And now to bed.
but things are improving. Thank you Marcia, Alice, Janet, Debbie, Susan,
I just got a letter from the HLA registry (bone marrow) today. I'm a
match for the patient they tested my blood for. They will call me
when it's time for the next step, which I think is a physical &
another round of blood tests. The patient isn't ready for a BMT yet
-- I think she's not yet in remission -- so I'm on standby until she
is.
MUSHROOMS USED TO BATTLE LEUKEMIA
By A. M. Goldstein
MyCure, a Kiriat Shemona-based start-up, is on
its way to developing
an anti-cancer drug that will battle a form of
leukemia known as CML.
The drug is the result of research initiated by
Dr. Jamal Mahajna of
the Upper Galilee Knowledge Center (Migal Ltd.),
based on work on
medicinal mushrooms conducted by Prof. Solomon
Wasser [pictured] of
the University of Haifa.
The anti-cancer agent resulting from this
particular research
breakthrough is protected by a patent filed in
the United States and
held jointly by Carmel-Haifa University Economic
Corp. and Migal.
The two researchers located two mushrooms that
contain active material
with a potential to combat CML, chronic myeloid
leukemia, with more
endurance than the present drug on the market,
Gleevec, developed by
Novartis. The disease is relatively rare but
still accounts for some
20% of adults diagnosed with leukemia.
MyCure was set up within the Meytav technological
incubator,
considered one of Israel's leading incubators in
the field of the life
sciences.  The company is now defining the
chemical structure of the
two mushroom's active molecules.  At a later
stage, it will work on
improving their other biological qualities.
MyCure has signed an exclusive licensing
agreement with the Migal and
Carmel for use of the patent to develop and
market drugs that will
overcome CML.
Prof. Wasser, a senior investigator at the
University of Haifa's
Institute of Evolution, is one of the world's
leading experts in
studying the medicinal and other traits of the
lowly mushroom.  He
holds other patents resulting from his work with
fungi, and heads the
Institute of Evolution's Biodiversity and
Evolution of Cryptogamic
Plants and Fungi Center.
I talked to the HLA registry people yesterday. They are testing the
second vial they took from me when I signed up, which they had
stored. They also did the health interview over the phone, and I
passed with flying colors. They told me the patient is a female who
has acute myelogenous leukemia. They said it could take 2 days to 2
weeks to find out if it's a match. At this point, I have gone from
praying that I am a match to praying for something beyond This World
-- that the patient be CURED immediately, and not have to go through
all that treatment. I'll keep you posted.
The Monterrey concert is June 4. As for it being the last concert,
Zubin Mehta said, right after the first one in Rome, that there would
never be another one. My immediate reaction, at the time, was, "You
want fries with those words?!" LOL
I can't go, because if I do, my son would miss at least 2 Little
In Studies, Umbilical Cord Blood Shows Promise for Adults
November 26, 2004
  By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
By The Associated Press
Umbilical cord blood, now used mostly to treat children
with leukemia, could save thousands of adults with the
disease each year who cannot find bone marrow donors, two
large studies indicate.
A European study found that those who got cord blood were
just as likely to be free of leukemia two years later as
those who got marrow. A United States study looking at
three-year survival yielded results almost as promising.
Leukemia patients often undergo radiation or chemotherapy
to kill their cancerous white blood cells, a treatment that
wipes out their immune systems, too. To restore their
immune systems, doctors give these patients an infusion of
bone marrow or umbilical cord blood, both of which contain
stem cells capable of developing into every kind of blood
cell.
Cord blood offers an important advantage over marrow that
makes it particularly valuable for use in transplants: its
stem cells are less likely to attack the recipient's body.
That allows a wider margin of error in matching up donors
and recipients.
Up until now, though, cord blood has been considered
suitable only for children because each donation has only
about one-tenth the number of stem cells in a marrow
donation.
The two new studies, published yesterday in The New England
Journal of Medicine, suggest that is not a serious
impediment.
In the European study, involving 682 patients, about a
third of both those who got matched marrow and those who
got cord blood that did not quite match their own tissues
were alive after two years. In the American study of 601
patients, about a third of those who got matched marrow
were leukemia-free after two years, compared with about
one-fifth of those who got cord blood or unmatched marrow.
Both studies were based on records from transplants in the
late 1990's and early 2000's.
Using cord blood could improve the odds of getting a
transplant for the 16,000 American adult leukemia patients
each year who cannot find a compatible marrow donor, said
the leader of the United States study, Dr. Mary J. Laughlin
of Case Comprehensive Cancer Center in Cleveland.
Still, Dr. Nancy Kernan, assistant chief of marrow
transplantation at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
in New York, said cord blood transplants in adults should
be done only as part of studies to look at and improve
their effectiveness.
Public cord blood banks, where blood drawn from umbilical
cords and placentas at birth is kept frozen, need to
quadruple their supply to find a match for every leukemia
patient who needs one. With four million births a year in
this country, and most cord blood thrown away, that should
not be a problem once more public money comes into play,
doctors said.
A federal Institute of Medicine committee is already
looking into the best way to set up a national cord blood
supply and is scheduled to complete its report in March.
"I know our committee will consume this study avidly," said
Kristine Gebbie, chairwoman of the group.
The first bone marrow transplants were done in the 1960's;
cord blood transplants started in the 1990's. Stem cell
transplants save only 20 percent to 30 percent of the
patients who hope to grow new immune systems. But without
the treatment, virtually all of them would die.
